An Overview Of Universal Basic Income: Discussion On The Benefits Of A Single System Welfare Standard, Zachary Quintero
An Overview Of Universal Basic Income: Discussion On The Benefits Of A Single System Welfare Standard, Zachary Quintero
Undergraduate Research Conference
In the past two decades there has been renewed interest in the proposition of a Universal Basic Income. A UBI is a system of direct monetary payments from government coffers to all citizens of a state or locality with the purpose of providing a sum for essential livelihood. In contrast to most current social welfare programs, the UBI requires no means test for the citizen to become a recipient. This idea has attracted attention for the radical simplicity of its design and implementation. Beginning with a discussion of the principles of the UBI, the paper then analyzes how Basic Income …

Where’S The Kale? A Search For Food Security On The Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Amy R. Sisk
Where’S The Kale? A Search For Food Security On The Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Amy R. Sisk
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Only one small grocery store serves the 5,000 people living on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in rural southeastern Montana. Between its limited stock, fast food from a nearby convenience store and canned goods distributed to residents through the commodity program, it’s hard to come by wholesome meals. That has not stopped health-conscious people from sponsoring a host of programs to curb poor nutrition. But will their efforts go far enough to make a lasting difference across the reservation? And why is accessing quality food so difficult in this part of the state? I set out to answer these questions on …

Characterization Of Microorganisms From Alfalfa Seeds Inoculants, Benedicte Diatta, Kalianna Kennoy, Silvia Rossbach
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Atmospheric nitrogen fixation can be accomplished by free living microorganisms or by symbiosis between legume plants and rhizobia. The symbiosis between the alfalfa plant and Sinorhizobium meliloti is one example of the symbiotic relationship between legume plants and rhizobia. During the symbiosis, the rhizobia fix nitrogen for the plant and the plant in return provides carbohydrates for the bacteria. In order to maximize the plant’s yield in agriculture, recent technologies used include seed inoculants. Seed inoculation methods rely on coating the seeds with plant-growth promoting bacteria. Besides nitrogen-fixing bacteria, the seeds may also be coated with microorganisms aiding in mineral …
Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight
Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)
The research preliminarily examines the embodied implications of a vulnerable relationship –Samburu grandparents and their young caregivers in the context of contemporary intercommunity violence, globalization, and resource scarcity. While children are recognized caregivers of adults in numerous contexts cross-culturally, including in developed nations like the U.S. and Britain, research on this issue is scant within anthropology and recent in other fields such as geography, medicine, and public health, where it has developed primarily since the 1990s.

13th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2014)
The HIV and AIDS epidemic sweeping through Africa has taken an especially hard hit on Zambia. The disease has played a dramatic role in this nation’s identity and future, leaving many children orphaned. According to the Central Statistical Office of Zambia, 54.2% of children aged 3-59 months were considered malnourished in 2006. The purpose of this research is to evaluate a community-based feeding program in Lusaka, Zambia for AIDS orphans and other undernourished children. Since it was implemented in 2004 by the Christian Alliance for Children in Zambia (CACZ), the Milk and Medicine Program has provided formula, nutritional supplements, medicine …

Hunger is an issue in both developed and developing countries all over the world. Depending on where a person is living, hunger is either the desire for food or continuous food deprivation. In this study, we examined and compared hunger in the United States and Somalia. We conducted a variety of research and performed surveys to tackle this project. We focused our research on the prevalence of hunger, including its causes and effects, and the various solutions in place to alleviate this problem. Compared to Somalia, the United States has more national programs in response to the issue. According to …

The Effects Of Cooling On Collegiate Basketball Player’S Core Temperature, Heart Rate, Rating Of Perceived Recovery And Rating Of Perceived Exertion, Taylor Phelps
Honors Theses
Cryotherapy is commonly used in sport and performance applications however primarily as a means for improved recovery. Intermittent cooling during competition may contribute to improved performance by modifying perceptual or physiological stress. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of intermittent cooling (IC) versus no cooling (NC) through the course of a collegiate basketball game in a thermoneutral environment. METHODS: Eight healthy, (age, 22 ± 1 year, height, 186.7 ± 7.1 cm, weight 93.4 ± 10.1 kg) competitively-trained collegiate basketball players participated in a randomized and counterbalanced repeated measures protocol. Cuba’S Maternal-Child Health, Colleen Marzilli
Cuba’S Maternal-Child Health, Colleen Marzilli
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose is to elucidate the differences between the Cuban and United States (U.S.) maternal-child health delivery systems by providing a descriptive, retrospective evaluation based on a convenience sample of data gathered through observations with Cuban public health officials, including physicians, nurses, and citizens. U.S.and Cuban data were analyzed using available United Nations data. In Cuba, there are several programs that contribute to excellent maternal-child health outcomes. Two health interventions for the mother and child are regarded as “hygiene” and include the maternity home and vaccination program. Maternity homes provide comprehensive, residential care for at-risk mothers until the onset of …

Methamphetamine: The Effect On The Child From Womb, Birth And Beyond, Chiara L. Keune
Graduate Research - Criminal Justice Sciences
Globally the use of methamphetamine surpasses that of heroin and cocaine combined. As a drug that facilitates weight loss and provides the user with increased energy, it is particularly appealing to women. This raises concerns about its use by pregnant women. This poster highlights what is known about the effects of methamphetamine by pregnant women on the unborn child, and on the long term consequences for the children of these women.

Visual Responses Of Adult Asian Citrus Psyllid (Hemiptera: Liviidae) To Colored Sticky Traps On Citrus Trees, Mamoudou Setamou, A. Sanchez, R. R. Saldaña, J. M. Patt, Kenneth R. Summy
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
The effects of five differently-colored sticky traps in capturing adult Diaphorina citri were evaluated in citrus orchards. Trap catches of D. citri were monitored fortnightly on blue, green, red, white and yellow sticky cards placed on three citrus varieties during D. citri active flight period from April to July in south Texas. Evaluation of mean trap catches of each color by repeated measures analysis of variance produced three separate groups: yellow traps caught significantly more D. citri adults than the other four traps; red and green traps caught significantly more D. citri than blue and white traps, which were not …
