A Novel Post-Electrospinning Treatment To Improve The Fibrous Structure Of The Chitosan Membrane, Hengjie Su

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes function as barriers in preventing soft tissue migration into dental osteogenic spaces. Chitosan is a biocompatible and degradable natural polysaccharide, which has shown potential in tissue regeneration and GBR applications. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a common solvent used to make the chitosan polymer solution for electrospinning process. However, the TFA salts remaining in the electrospun nano-sized fibers induce the chitosan fiber swelling and dissolution when placed in aqueous solutions leading to loss of nano-fiber structure. The aim of this work was to evaluate an innovative method using triethylamine (TEA)/ di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (tBoc) to treat the …

Food Costs Of A Gluten-Free Diet: Comparison To Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Allotments, Blair Harmon, Dr. Rickelle Richards

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the lining of the small intestine when gluten is present, which can lead to poor absorption of nutrients resulting in malnutrition.1 The only medical treatment for people with this condition is life-long adherence to a gluten-free diet. The prevalence of celiac disease has continued to rise in the United States, with recent estimates of 1 in 141 people having celiac disease, suggesting this is a common health condition today.2,3

Childhood Obesity And Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Genetic Diseases That Contribute To Cardiovascular Disease, Alyssa Caudle

Senior Honors Theses

Childhood obesity occurs as the result of an imbalance between caloric intake and energy expenditure. Genetic risk factors for obesity have become an area of research due to its permanency. Mutated genes such as Fat Mass and Obesity Associated (FTO), Leptin (LEP), Leptin Receptor (LEPR), Melanocortin 4 Receptor (MC4R), Adiponectin C1Q and Collagen Domain Containing (ADIPOQ), Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 1 (PCSK1), and Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma (PPARG) all contribute to the development of childhood obesity. In the presence of high cholesterol caused by obesity, the genetic condition known as familial hypercholesterolemia is exacerbated. Familial hypercholesterolemia is caused by a …

Socioeconomic Status And Weight Loss Behaviors, Hannah Seward Apr 2014

Socioeconomic Status And Weight Loss Behaviors, Hannah Seward

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States and many other countries, obesity is viewed as a public health crisis that must be handled. Many social and individual solutions to the problem are proposed in research and policy. On an individual level, many Americans try to get rid of their fat with a multitude of weight loss practices as part of a healthy lifestyle. Obesity rates, feelings towards fatness, and weight control behaviors are significantly affected by a number of sociocultural factors. In this project I explore the relationship between the desire to lose weight and weight control practices with income. Using data from …

In A Desperate Land: Rediscovering Los Angeles Pop, Thomas Useted

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this creative nonfiction manuscript, the author explores, examines, and assesses the popular music produced by Los Angeles-based musicians during the 1960s and 1970s, in an effort to understand what that music has meant to him and, by extension, what it might mean for contemporary listeners. A work of cultural criticism and memoir, this project considers the music as an outgrowth of, and at its intersections with, regional literature, film, history, myth, and landscape. The author, a native Midwesterner, uses the physical and temporal distance between his experience and the origins of the music to consider the ways in which …
