Characterization Of Extraction Methods To Recover Phenolic Rich Extracts From Pinto Beans That Exert High Antioxidative Activities Using Response Surface Approach, Mohammed Aldawsari Apr 2014

Characterization Of Extraction Methods To Recover Phenolic Rich Extracts From Pinto Beans That Exert High Antioxidative Activities Using Response Surface Approach, Mohammed Aldawsari

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The pinto bean has been linked to the prevention of multiple diseases due in large part to the presence of phenolic antioxidants, which are higher in beans than in many fruits and vegetables. These components deliver health properties beyond basic nutritional characteristics by scavenging free oxygen radicals. However, these benefits are most likely due to the ability of these chemically diverse phenols to impart greater protective properties as additives or synergists acting in combination. However, optimal parameters to isolate these compounds (in terms of ratios and types) from a given natural source are not known. Without this knowledge, understanding the …

Frayser Transformation Center: Compassionate Architecture Designed To Foster Community And Family By Strengthening Relationships Between Each, Victor Mature Robinson Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project explored the use of Compassionate Architecture and its ability to inspire social change within a community. A Transformation Center, which would teach the skills needed to become a sucessful adult, was designed to respond to the lack of transitional and social space for young adults. The Center is a public facility that contains multiple spaces for learning the necessary life skills needed to transition into adulthood. These included many of the skills that are not taught in high school: household skills, family techniques, and community involvement, which are all taught and learned in a communal, hands-on manner. The …

Stable-Isotope Bone Chemistry And Human/Animal Interactions In Historical Archaeology, Eric J. Guiry, Stéphane Noël, Eric Tourigny Apr 2014

Stable-Isotope Bone Chemistry And Human/Animal Interactions In Historical Archaeology, Eric J. Guiry, Stéphane Noël, Eric Tourigny

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Stable isotope–based paleodietary work is ideally suited for answering questions about a wide variety of human/animal relationships in historical archaeological contexts in northeastern North America and farther afield. To date, very few published studies have approached historical animal husbandry and trade from an isotopic perspective. We advocate for increased attention to the possibilities of stable-isotope work by (1) explaining why the technique is well suited to address some problems of human/animal relations encountered by historical archaeologists, (2) presenting a literature review of previous stable-isotope work on human/ animal interaction in historical North America, and (3) offering a short case study …

Culture-Independent Evaluation Of The Appendix And Rectum Microbiomes In Children With And Without Appendicitis, Hope T. Jackson, Emmanuel F. Mongodin, Katherine P. Davenport, Claire M. Fraser, Anthony D. Sandler, Steven L. Zeichner

Surgery Faculty Publications

Purpose

The function of the appendix is largely unknown, but its microbiota likely contributes to function. Alterations in microbiota may contribute to appendicitis, but conventional culture studies have not yielded conclusive information. We conducted a pilot, culture-independent 16S rRNA-based microbiota study of paired appendix and rectal samples.

Methods

We collected appendix and rectal swabs from 21 children undergoing appendectomy, six with normal appendices and fifteen with appendicitis (nine perforated). After DNA extraction, we amplified and sequenced 16S rRNA genes and analyzed sequences using CLoVR. We identified organisms differing in relative abundance using ANOVA (p

Results

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to explore the association between polymorphisms in signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 3 (STAT3) and the risk of gastric cancer. In the present study, a case-control study was conducted in which rs2293152 and rs744166 polymorphisms in STAT3 were analyzed in 209 Chinese patients with gastric cancer and 294 cancer-free controls. The genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method. For the rs744166 polymorphism, the TC genotype (adjusted OR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.39–0.92, and P = 0.020) and CC genotype (adjusted OR = 0.41, 95% CI = …

Adverse Health Effects Of Intestinal Parasitic Infections In Rural Peruvian Clinic Patients, Jonathan M. Stofer Apr 2014

Adverse Health Effects Of Intestinal Parasitic Infections In Rural Peruvian Clinic Patients, Jonathan M. Stofer

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Intestinal Parasitic Infections (IPIs) pose a significant global health concern. IPIs annually contribute to 3.5 billion infections and 450 million illnesses worldwide. In hyperendemic countries, IPIs pose a significant economic and health burden, especially in rural areas. IPIs have many routes of transmission and cause a wide range of symptoms associated largely with poor health, impeded growth, and worsening of secondary infections. Such diseases are widespread in poor communities living in the Peruvian Amazon. This study aims to describe common chief complaints, diagnoses, treatments, as well as behaviors and practices associated with IPIs presenting in clinic patients. As part of …

Population-Based Analysis Of Cetp Identifies Association Between I405v And Cognitive Decline: The Cache County Study, Caitlin Munger, Dr. John Kauwe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease and is the sixth leading cause of death in the US. There are currently no successful therapies to prevent or treat LOAD, and predicting disease status remains a challenge1. Apolipoprotein E (APOE)—a gene involved in cholesterol regulation—is the strongest genetic predictor for LOAD. Because of the association between APOE and LOAD, cholesterol levels were suspected and have since been shown to increase LOAD risk2. Similar to APOE, the Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein (CETP) gene facilitates cholesteryl ester and triglyceride exchange between lipoproteins3 and is found in the same pathway as APOE, …

Cultural, Economic, And Educational Factors Related To Diabetes Melitus Type 2 In Tongans, April Mcmurray, Dr. Lora Beth Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

DMT2 is a lifestyle-related disease where the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells are unreceptive to it, and it is now the most common form of diabetes1. DMT2 has several risk factors: obesity, poor nutrition, a lack of exercise, and genetics1. The diabetic population is growing throughout the world. Individuals who do not control the disease can suffer serious complications such as limb amputation and damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart; treatment can also be very costly1.

Nutritional Analysis And Anemia In Ecuador, Michael Brizzee, Sondra Heaston Apr 2014

Nutritional Analysis And Anemia In Ecuador, Michael Brizzee, Sondra Heaston

According to the World Health Organization, anemia affects over 30% of children in Ecuador and in surrounding countries and has been directly linked to decreased test scores, educational performance, and job proficiency. This study is aimed at finding a nutrition correlation and possible causation of anemia in Ecuadorian children ages 7-15. The research is done in conjunction with an anemia study done through the college of nursing looking at other possible causes of anemia including parasites and deficient vitamin intake. Together, these studies have helped to identify possible causes of anemia which can in turn help agencies find economical and …

Sex-Trafficking In Cambodia: Assessing The Role Of Ngos In Rebuilding Cambodia, Katherine M. Wood Apr 2014

Sex-Trafficking In Cambodia: Assessing The Role Of Ngos In Rebuilding Cambodia, Katherine M. Wood

Senior Honors Theses

The anti-slavery and other freedom fighting movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries did not abolish all forms of slavery. Many forms of modern slavery thrive in countries all across the globe. The sex trafficking trade has intensified despite the advocacy of many human rights-based groups. Southeast Asia ranks very high in terms of the source, transit, and destination of sex trafficking. In particular, human trafficking of women and girls for the purpose of forced prostitution remains an increasing problem in Cambodia. Cambodia’s cultural traditions and the breakdown of law under the Khmer Rouge and Democratic Kampuchea have contributed to …

Whole Shoot Mineral Partitioning And Accumulation In Pea (Pisum Sativum), Renuka P. Sankaran, Michael A. Grusak

Publications and Research

Several grain legumes are staple food crops that are important sources of minerals for humans; unfortunately, our knowledge is incomplete with respect to the mechanisms of translocation of these minerals to the vegetative tissues and loading into seeds. Understanding the mechanism and partitioning of minerals in pea could help in developing cultivars with high mineral density. A mineral partitioning study was conducted in pea to assess whole-plant growth and mineral content and the potential source-sink remobilization of different minerals, especially during seed development. Shoot and root mineral content increased for all the minerals, although tissue-specific partitioning differed between the minerals. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Predator Management Techniques Of North American Wolf Species And Potential Applications In Michigan, Madison Ball Apr 2014

A Comparative Analysis Of Predator Management Techniques Of North American Wolf Species And Potential Applications In Michigan, Madison Ball

Honors Projects

Wolf populations have continued to increase after the Endangered Species Act of 1973 within the United States. Many resilient populations have reestablished themselves and have since become delisted as endangered species. Wolf reestablishment, especially near areas close to humans, has created new management problems that wildlife and land managers are responsible for solving. As wolf populations grow and human development pushes closer and closer to wild areas, conflicts pertaining to depredation of livestock, safety of pets and citizens, and potential effects on prey species populations arise. Since multiple interest groups are involved in wolf management, it is dire that wolf …

Post-Development Theory And Food Security: A Case Study In Swaziland, Lauren Karplus Apr 2014

Post-Development Theory And Food Security: A Case Study In Swaziland, Lauren Karplus

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

Post-development theory argues that development theory and the practice of Post-World War II development projects have failed because the entire concept of development is a Western, non-universal measure of progress. Indeed, examples of failed development interventions abound from around the world. While development experts argue amongst themselves about how best to deliver development interventions in order to minimize the failures of development, post-development theorists believe that no amount of tweaking will make the development agenda a success. They argue that the problem with development is not about how it is implemented, but rather that development itself is a flawed concept …
