Background—This trial tested the effects of multidisciplinary group clinic appointments on the primary outcome of time to first heart failure (HF) rehospitalization or death.

Methods and Results—HF patients (n=198) were randomly assigned to standard care or standard care plus multidisciplinary group clinics. The group intervention consisted of 4 weekly clinic appointments and 1 booster clinic at month 6, where multidisciplinary professionals engaged patients in HF self-management skills. Data were collected prospectively for 12 months beginning after completion of the first 4 group clinic appointments (2 months post randomization). The intervention was associated with greater adherence to recommended vasodilators …

Revisiting The Use Of Secondary Task Reaction Time Measures In Telepresence Research: Exploring The Role Of Immersion And Attention, Cheryl C. Bracken, Gary Pettey, Mu Wu

Communication Faculty Publications

In this experimental study, we use secondary task reaction time (STRT) to measure Attention to a media presentation and compare STRT to traditional self-report measures of Telepresence (immersion, social reality, spatial presence, and transportation) and enjoyment. Further, we compare the STRT measure with the composite items of Telepresence–Immersion. The results indicate that STRT may be useful for measuring some sub-dimensions of Telepresence. Implications are discussed.

Religious Rhetoric And The Evolution Of George W. Bush's Political Philosophy, Lauren Frances Turek Nov 2014

Religious Rhetoric And The Evolution Of George W. Bush's Political Philosophy, Lauren Frances Turek

History Faculty Research

This essay surveys George W. Bush's public statements from 1993 to 2001 to examine the evolution of his religious and political rhetoric. Bush's personal religiosity and his use of religious rhetoric during his campaigns for the presidency and in his two terms in office have received extensive comment from the press as well as from scholars. Yet very little scholarly work has considered the role of religion in his earlier political career. Although Bush had evinced a deep and genuine evangelical faith for years before he launched his bid for the governorship, he did not begin his political career as …

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols Nov 2014

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Social scientists are well-trained to observe and chart social trends, but less experienced at presenting scientific findings in formats that can inform social change work. In this article, I propose a new theoretical concept that provides a mechanism by which social science research can be more effectively applied for proactive policy, organizational, and program development. The approach is to use the metaphor of “desire paths” from landscape architecture to show how social scientists can identify and analyze social desire paths that appear on the social structural landscape. Social desire paths usually emerge because existing formal structures do not meet individual …

The Translational Biology Of Remyelination: Past, Present, And Future, Robin J.M. Franklin, Vittorio Gallo Nov 2014

The Translational Biology Of Remyelination: Past, Present, And Future, Robin J.M. Franklin, Vittorio Gallo

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Amongst neurological diseases, multiple sclerosis (MS) presents an attractive target for regenerative medicine. This is because the primary pathology, the loss of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes, can be followed by a spontaneous and efficient regenerative process called remyelination. While cell transplantation approaches have been explored as a means of replacing lost oligodendrocytes, more recently therapeutic approaches that target the endogenous regenerative process have been favored. This is in large part due to our increasing understanding of (1) the cell types within the adult brain that are able to generate new oligodendrocytes, (2) the mechanisms and pathways by which this achieved, and (3) …

Abstract

During the recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm on 30-31 March 2013, Van Allen Probe A detected enhanced magnetosonic (MS) waves in a broad range of L = 1.8-4.7 and magnetic local time (MLT) = 17-22 h, with a frequency range ∼10-100 Hz. In the meanwhile, distinct proton ring distributions with peaks at energies of ∼10 keV, were also observed in L = 3.2-4.6 and L = 5.0-5.6. Using a subtracted bi-Maxwellian distribution to model the observed proton ring distribution, we perform three-dimensional ray tracing to investigate the instability, propagation, and spatial distribution of MS waves. Numerical results show …

A Comparison Of Meat Purchasing Attitudes Across Generations, Jamie M. Mickelson

Master's Theses

To identify the factors that influence different generations meat purchasing behaviors. The list of the features for respondents to report are desirable to them when they purchase meat. The results of features will provide the answer to meat purchasing attitudes across generations, which will help to analyze which features influence generations purchasing behaviors. There were 290 respondents to the survey. The target markets are split in to four groups – young Millennials, older Millennials, Generation Xers, and Baby Boomers. The highest desirability for respondents decisions to purchase meat is good value for the money and second is no hormones added. …

Ndm-Cache: A Network Cache For Cloud Computing System, Yunfa Li, Pengtao Wang Nov 2014

Ndm-Cache: A Network Cache For Cloud Computing System, Yunfa Li, Pengtao Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Block-level storage service is one of the basic services in a cloud computing system, it not only provides block-level storage volumes to the virtual machines for persistent data, but also improve the availability of data. However, with the rapid expansion of cloud computing systems and increasing number of the virtual machines, higher I/O performance of storage subsystem is demanded, when the storage subsystem under the condition of high load, its service quality is severely affected. According to this issue, this paper designs and implements the prototype of a network cache for cloud computing system, named NDM-Cache. This network cache system …

The Battle For Higher Standards, Tom Luna, Mike Rush, Rod Gramer, Roger Stewart Nov 2014

The Battle For Higher Standards, Tom Luna, Mike Rush, Rod Gramer, Roger Stewart

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the aftermath of the federal mandates imposed through No Child Left Behind, the state-led effort to establish common math and English standards across states—known as the Common Core State Standards—seemed a welcome change in the approach to improving student achievement and success. However, the effort to ensure that students were ready for college or the workforce became the political target of those who distrust federal mandates and fear a nationalized education agenda bent on social engineering. The standards became intertwined with NSA spying, data mining, and federal grants for education with strings attached.

Online Information Searching For Cardiovascular Diseases: An Analysis Of Mayo Clinic Search Query Logs, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak

Kno.e.sis Publications

Since the early 2000’s, Internet usage for health information searching has increased significantly. Studying search queries can help us to understand users “information need” and how do they formulate search queries (“expression of information need”). Although cardiovascular diseases (CVD) affect a large percentage of the population, few studies have investigated how and what users search for CVD. We address this knowledge gap in the community by analyzing a large corpus of 10 million CVD related search queries from MayoClinic.com. Using UMLS MetaMap and UMLS semantic types/concepts, we developed a rule-based approach to categorize the queries into 14 health categories. We …

Important Components Needed In Today’S Global Society From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Helena H. Wallenberg-Lerner Ph.D., Wayanne B. James Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article reviews the extent to which individuals from different geocultural regions view and identify affective components perceived to be important in today’s global society. Various regions of the world were categorized to ensure equivalent participation around the world. Eight geocultural regions were identified to compare responses by geographical regions to obtain information on possible differences. A questionnaire was administered to respondents in the eight geocultural regions to obtain their perceptions of important affective components needed in today’s global society. Based on this study, there were at least nine different affective components perceived to be important in today’s global society. …

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau, Brandon Lundy Ph.D. Nov 2014

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau, Brandon Lundy Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper provides a case study illustrating the crossroads between the agendas of international/national economic development with that of the development objectives of local communities. It shows how a community development project connects villagers to the larger world – both practically and imaginatively. This study takes a single case, the process of developing a guesthouse building project among the Nalú of southern Guinea-Bissau, to illustrate how a local attempt to connect to the outside world is intersected by community relations, NGOs, and development discourse. Through a community study using ethnographic methodology including participant observation, interviews, and focus groups, the village …

Politics Of Technoscapes: Algorithms Of Social Inclusion & Exclusion In A Global City, R. Swaminathan Nov 2014

Politics Of Technoscapes: Algorithms Of Social Inclusion & Exclusion In A Global City, R. Swaminathan

Journal of International and Global Studies

Social media and the Internet are seen as Siamese twins. The discursive architecture of social media is so tightly coupled with the various imaginaries of the Internet that the distinct spatiality, territoriality, and relational power dynamics of each is often simplistically blurred and merged. This paper makes the case that the sociality and spatiality of social media is not only different from that of the Internet but is increasingly becoming part of our contemporary built environment in a manner that confers social media a high degree of relative autonomy in its relationship with the Internet. The paper further argues that …

Market Power Without Market Definition, Daniel A. Crane Nov 2014

Market Power Without Market Definition, Daniel A. Crane

Notre Dame Law Review

Antitrust law has traditionally required proof of market power in most cases and has analyzed market power through a market definition/market share lens. In recent years, this indirect or structural approach to proving market power has come under attack as misguided in practice and intellectually incoherent. If market definition collapses in the courts and antitrust agencies, as it seems poised to do, this will rupture antitrust analysis and create urgent pressures for an alternative approach to proving market power through direct evidence. None of the leading theoretic approaches—such as the Lerner Index or a search for supracompetitive profits—provides a robust …

Accessible Spiritual Practices Through Classic Forms Of Prayer, Clyde Vernon Hartline Nov 2014

Accessible Spiritual Practices Through Classic Forms Of Prayer, Clyde Vernon Hartline

Doctor of Ministry

But Jesus often withdrew to the lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:16

When God-followers feel distant and disconnected, they often describe their experience as a “lonely place.” The feeling of being distanced from God is exacerbated by a lack of knowledge on how to resolve the distance. Retreats and resources might help one reconnect with God; however, the means for connection is often housed in the deep recesses of books or is hidden in the teachings of spiritual sages far away on desert retreats. Simple classic prayer practices remain largely unknown in evangelical circles as a result of inaccessibility, unfamiliarity, …

Mud Pies And Msasa [Tree] Leaves: The Unilateral Declaration Of Independence (Udi), International Sanctions And Settler Agriculture In Colonial Zimbabwe, 1965-1979, Simeon Maravanyika

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article examines the impact of Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) sanctions on settler agriculture in colonial Zimbabwe between 1965, when UDI was declared, and 1979, when the Internal Settlement agreement ushered in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. Having witnessed a significant rise in the two decades after the Second World War, settler agriculture plummeted in subsequent years. UDI, this articles argues, was a major reversal of fortunes for the white agricultural sector as it opened a new chapter in the colony’s economic and social history characterised by biting international sanctions. A combination of sanctions-induced fuel shortages, loss of markets because of embargoes on …
