Classical And Quasi-Newton Methods For A Meteorological Parameters Prediction Boundary Value Problem, Ioannis Famelis, Georgios Galanis, Matthias Ehrhardt Nov 2014

Classical And Quasi-Newton Methods For A Meteorological Parameters Prediction Boundary Value Problem, Ioannis Famelis, Georgios Galanis, Matthias Ehrhardt

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study the numerical solution of a Boundary Value problem for second order quadratic differential equations which arises in the numerical prediction of meteorological parameters. In the present work, we use finite differences and focus on the numerical solution of the resulting nonlinear system. More precisely, we apply classical Newton’s and Quasi-Newton methods paying attention to the special sparse form of the Jacobian matrix and modify appropriately the LU factorization in order to reduce significantly the required floating point operations. Furthermore, we implement and study in depth the behavior of all the proposed procedures in respect of their accuracy, stability …

Analyzing Consumers’ Decisions To Select Micro- Invasive Aesthetic Service Providers Using A Hybrid Method, Fan-Yun Pai Nov 2014

Analyzing Consumers’ Decisions To Select Micro- Invasive Aesthetic Service Providers Using A Hybrid Method, Fan-Yun Pai

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Micro-invasive aesthetic services are becoming more popular, and thus the industry is becoming more competitive. It is thus critical for companies to better understand the criteria that consumers use when choosing a micro-invasive aesthetic service provider. In order to investigate this issue, three focus group interviews were carried out in this study and the related literature was reviewed in order to find the relevant criteria. The Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) was then employed to find casual relationships among the criteria, while the Analytic Network Process (ANP) was further applied to evaluate the importance of each criterion. After …

Best Practices In Managing Government Grants, Nicole Neitzey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Dwindling funds have steadily created more competition for organizations in mine action and conventional weapons destruction. Given the current funding landscape in these fields, it is increasingly imperative for organizations to employ sound program-management practices to prove themselves worthy for continued funding. This article was adapted from several of the author’s presentations on securing funding, managing grant funds and project risk management.

Humanitarian And Developmental Impact Of Anti-Vehicle Mines, Pascal Rapillard, Maryam Walton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Anti-vehicle mines negatively impact humanitarian efforts and developmental progress. Key findings from a South Sudan case study show that mine contamination impacts humanitarian efforts directly through casualties, while dangers of agricultural development and hindrance to foreign investment are also primary developmental concerns for the South Sudanese.

Obama's Change: Republicanism, Remembrance, And Rhetorical Leadership In The 2007 Presidential Announcement Speech, Adam J. Gaffey Nov 2014

Obama's Change: Republicanism, Remembrance, And Rhetorical Leadership In The 2007 Presidential Announcement Speech, Adam J. Gaffey

Communication Studies Faculty Works

"This essay offers an analysis of Barack Obama’s official announcement speech of 2007 and his definition of ‘‘change.’’ Contrary to critics who have separated ‘‘vernacular’’ and ‘‘elite’’ strands of republican philosophy, I argue that Obama’s ‘‘change’’ rhetorically combined these frameworks into a threefold appeal for political leadership: the expansion of collective freedom, the necessary participation of citizens in public affairs, and the centrality of speechifying to political leadership. Understanding this characterization of change allows better comprehension of Obama’s transition from politician to presidential candidate within his situational constraints, as well as the distinctive public memory attributed to Abraham Lincoln throughout …

Cavitation In Vial Drop Subjected To Mechanical Shock, Houman Babazadehrokni Nov 2014

Cavitation In Vial Drop Subjected To Mechanical Shock, Houman Babazadehrokni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cavitation is a phenomenon that occurs when the local pressure falls down below the critical pressure. Previous work from the Randolph lab demonstrated that protein aggregates can form when a vial of therapeutic solution is dropped onto a hard surface. The process by which this occurs is most likely shock induced cavitation. During this process, hot spots can be created with temperatures and pressures reaching thousands of Kelvin and hundreds of atmospheres, respectively, leading to degradation of protein therapeutics. This work will extend previous efforts by exploring differences generated by change in vial materials, solutions, drop methods and fill volumes. …

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga Nov 2014

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The increasingly frequent imposition of sanctions by the EU over the past decade has notbeen accompanied by a thorough pre-assessment and contingency planning stage, which hasled to the formulation of suboptimal sanctions regimes. This paper argues for establishing apre-assessment and contingency planning of sanctions, departing from the ‘ad hoc-ism’ ofcurrent decision-making on sanctions. To this end, it proposes the development of a‘checklist’ composed of key questions that need to be tackled to optimise the design ofsanctions. These questions include the identification of resources linked to the objectionablepolicies; the leverage of the EU; the costs to the EU; the legality of …

Rulers, Rhetoric, And Ray-Guns: A Post Colonial Look At 90'S Alien Invasion Media, Logan Matthew Hudspeth Nov 2014

Rulers, Rhetoric, And Ray-Guns: A Post Colonial Look At 90'S Alien Invasion Media, Logan Matthew Hudspeth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis opens discussion on American alien invasion films of the 90s as a self-critique, a reaction to being an imperial power at the end of the Cold War. The alien menace in these films is not the "other" but rather the U.S. itself being the colonizer or conqueror looking to expand its sphere of influence. Furthermore, it discusses how Presidential rhetoric in the films play a role in this postcolonial reading. Specific works studied are: Independence Day (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998), and The Puppet Masters (1994).

Using Storytelling (Including Image, Metaphor And Narrative) In Cross-Generational, Cross-Cultural Twenty-First Century Evangelism, Rick D. Mckinney

Doctor of Ministry

Generational and cultural diversity within twenty-first century society has created great challenges to both professional clergy and laypersons in communicating the gospel. In addition, a postmodern, post-Christian culture has created a hostile environment for those sharing the message of Christ using the formulaic, propositional evangelism methods of the Twentieth century. Section One of this dissertation will elaborate on the problem. Section Two discusses why these methods, written primarily for a period of time when Judeo-Christian absolutes and regard for the sacred were staples in society, are increasingly ineffective. As the church struggles with a steady decline in its membership, the …

Nazava Water Filters: Action Research Report, Lisa Mcmonagle, Ilhan Ahmed

Miller Center Fellowship

The action research project had multiple goals. The first was to survey customers and potential customers on multiple islands in order to determine demographics and customer preferences. Second, by observing resellers in the field we determined different strategies for sales and promotion methods. From these two efforts, we were able to compile a Reseller Training Manual to be distributed to Nazava resellers across the Indonesian archipelago. Additionally, we were able to compile a gallery of photographs and videos for Nazava to use in their promotional efforts.

Volunteers In America: How Volunteerism And American Civil Society Shape Our Museums, Sarah C. Crocker Nov 2014

Volunteers In America: How Volunteerism And American Civil Society Shape Our Museums, Sarah C. Crocker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the intersection of volunteerism, museum studies, and American civil society, using these frameworks to examine volunteer motivations within two Denver area art museums. Additionally, there is much current scholarship that focuses on the relationship between museums and community, yet does not often address the role of museum volunteerism within such a context. This thesis therefore also examines the intersection of community and museum volunteerism, presenting a starting point for future researches to continue studying museum volunteerism within the context of civic engagement. This thesis finds that, while the ideology of American civil society plays a role in …

The Transnational Political Involvement Of Nigerian Immigrants In New York City: Motivations, Means And Constraints, Leila Rodriguez Ph.D. Nov 2014

The Transnational Political Involvement Of Nigerian Immigrants In New York City: Motivations, Means And Constraints, Leila Rodriguez Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Africans represent a small but rapidly growing immigrant population in the United States. Nigerians, who constitute the largest group, form a well-organized community with numerous ethnic, hometown and social associations. Through some of these organizations, many Nigerians have successfully intervened in the economic and social development and the political processes of their hometowns. Their political involvement in the U.S. is less. In this article I use quantitative and qualitative data to analyze the motivations that Nigerian immigrants have for political involvement in Nigeria or the U.S., the means that enable this participation, and the constraints to participating. Findings suggest the …

What Is “The Good” Of Arts-Based Peacebuilding? Questions Of Value And Evaluation In Current Practice, Mary Ann Hunter, Linda Page

Peace and Conflict Studies

In a context of growing attention to the benefits of the arts in peacebuilding, this article reports on the findings of a small scoping study that aimed to identify how the arts are perceived and supported by international development agencies. Based on a 2012 analysis of five international aid agencies working in the South East Asia and Pacific region, the study found that arts and creative practices are not, as yet, afforded a significant role in current policy or strategy, although arts activity is recognised as a social development tool by agencies working in partnership with local organisations. Resulting from …

Rgs16, A Novel P53 And Prb Cross-Talk Candidate Inhibits Migration And Invasion Of Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Miranda B. Carper, James Denvir, Goran Boskovic, Donald A. Primerano, Pier Paolo Claudio

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Data collected since the discovery of p53 and pRb/RB1 suggests these tumor suppressors cooperate to inhibit tumor progression. Patients who have mutations in both p53 and RB1 genes have increased tumor reoccurrence and decreased survival compared to patients with only one tumor suppressor gene inactivated. It remains unclear how p53 and pRb cooperate toward inhibiting tumorigenesis. Using RNA expression profiling we identified 179 p53 and pRb cross-talk candidates in normal lung fibroblasts (WI38) cells exogenously coexpressing p53 and pRb. Regulator of G protein signaling 16 (RGS16) was among the p53 and pRb cross-talk candidates and has been implicated in inhibiting …
