Topology Dependence Of Ppm-Based Internet Protocol Traceback Schemes, Ankunda R. Kiremire Oct 2014

Topology Dependence Of Ppm-Based Internet Protocol Traceback Schemes, Ankunda R. Kiremire

Doctoral Dissertations

Multiple schemes that utilize probabilistic packet marking (PPM) have been proposed to deal with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks by reconstructing their attack graphs and identifying the attack sources.

In the first part of this dissertation, we present our contribution to the family of PPM-based schemes for Internet Protocol (IP) traceback. Our proposed approach, Prediction-Based Scheme (PBS), consists of marking and traceback algorithms that reduce scheme convergence times by dealing with the problems of data loss and incomplete attack graphs exhibited by previous PPM-based schemes.

Compared to previous PPM-based schemes, the PBS marking algorithm ensures that traceback is possible …

Dipl 3800 Investigating International Relations, Joseph O'Mahoney Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

The objectives of this class are twofold. The first goal is to develop a critical understanding of the use of scientific research in the practice and academic study of international affairs. While we will consider issues central to all research and some unique to qualitative analysis, the emphasis in this class is quantitative research. Whether you are primarily interested in security, finance, development, trade, or social issues, much research that is likely of interest to you uses some form of quantitative analysis. This is equally true for policy reports published by the UN, World Bank, Brookings, RAND, or other relevant …

Partitioning And Rights: The Supreme Court's Accidental Jurisprudence Of Democratic Process, James A. Gardner Oct 2014

Partitioning And Rights: The Supreme Court's Accidental Jurisprudence Of Democratic Process, James A. Gardner

Florida State University Law Review

In democracies that allocate to a court responsibility for interpreting and enforcing the constitutional ground rules of democratic politics, the sheer importance of the task would seem to oblige such courts to guide their rulings by developing an account of the nature and prominent features of the constitutional commitment to democracy. The U.S. Supreme Court, however, has from the beginning refused to develop a general account—a theory—of how the U.S. Constitution establishes and structures democratic politics. The Court’s diffidence left a vacuum at the heart of its constitutional jurisprudence of democratic process, and like most vacuums, this one was almost …

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2014

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many engineering applications ranging from engineering seismology to petroleum engineering and civil engineering, it is important to process seismic data. In processing seismic data, it turns out to be very efficient to describe the signal's spectrum as a linear combination of Ricker wavelet spectra. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical efficiency. Specifically, signal propagation through several layers is discussed, and it is shown that the Ricker wavelet is the simplest non-trivial solution for the corresponding data processing problem, under the condition that the described properties of the approximation family are satisfied.

Examining The Consistence Of Futures Margin Levels Using Bivariate Extreme Value Copulas, X. Gong, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Songsak Sriboonchitta Oct 2014

Examining The Consistence Of Futures Margin Levels Using Bivariate Extreme Value Copulas, X. Gong, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Songsak Sriboonchitta

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This study examines the consistence of the futures margin levels of different commodities and combinations in the CME group by Extreme Value Copula (EVC). We find that if we ignore the co-movements of the commodities, the margins become consistent with each other, and the margin violation rates hover around 0.5%. However, if we consider the co-movement of the related commodities using EVC, the margin levels are found to be not consistent anymore, especially in the combinations of strongly related commodities which are in the same category. Therefore, we suggest that the CME group should try to harmonize the margins policy …

Aridification Of Central Asia And Uplift Of The Altai And Hangay Mountains, Mongolia: Stable Isotope Evidence, Jeremy K. Caves, Derek J. Sjostrom, Hari T. Mix, Matthew J. Winnick, C. Page Chamberlain

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Central Asia has become increasingly arid during the Cenozoic, though the mechanisms behind this aridification remain unresolved. Much attention has focused on the influence and uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the role of ranges linked to India-Asia convergence but well north of the Plateau—including the Altai, Sayan, and Hangay—in creating the arid climate of Central Asia is poorly understood. Today, these ranges create a prominent rain shadow, effectively separating the boreal forest to the north from the deserts of Central Asia. To explore the role of these mountains in modifying climate since the late Eocene, we measured carbon …

Unusual Structure-Energy Correlations In Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction Transition States, Justyna M. Żurek, Robert L. Rae, Martin J. Paterson, Magnus Bebbington Oct 2014

Unusual Structure-Energy Correlations In Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction Transition States, Justyna M. Żurek, Robert L. Rae, Martin J. Paterson, Magnus Bebbington

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Detailed analysis of calculated data from an experimental/computational study of intramolecular furan Diels-Alder reactions has led to the unusual discovery that the mean contraction of the newly forming C-C σ-bonds from the transition state to the product shows a linear correlation with both reaction Gibbs free energies and reverse energy barriers. There is evidence for a similar correlation in other intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions involving non-aromatic dienes. No such correlation is found for intermolecular Diels-Alder reactions.

New Experimental And Theoretical Tools For Studying Protein Systems With Elements Of Structural Disorder, Tairan Yuwen Oct 2014

New Experimental And Theoretical Tools For Studying Protein Systems With Elements Of Structural Disorder, Tairan Yuwen

Open Access Dissertations

Disordered proteins are one class of proteins which do not possess well-folded three-dimensional structures as their native conformations. Many eukaryotic proteins have been found to be fully disordered or contain certain disordered regions. Disordered proteins usually display several characteristic properties, such as increased motional freedom and the conformational heterogeneity caused by that. The elements of structural disorder are commonly involved in many important biological functions and are implicated in many diseases. Therefore, the study of disordered proteins has become one of the most important research topics in recent years. This thesis presents results from three different research projects; the common …

Earlier Vegetation Green-Up Has Reduced Spring Dust Storms, Bihang Fan, Li Guo, Ning Li, Jin Chen, Henry Lin, Xiaoyang Zhang, Miaogen Shen, Yuhan Rao, Cong Wang, Lei Ma

GSCE Faculty Publications

The observed decline of spring dust storms in Northeast Asia since the 1950s has been attributed to surface wind stilling. However, spring vegetation growth could also restrain dust storms through accumulating above ground biomass and increasing surface roughness. To investigate the impacts of vegetation spring growth on dust storms, we examine the relationships between recorded spring dust storm outbreaks and satellite-derived vegetation green-up date in Inner Mongolia, Northern China from 1982 to 2008. We find a significant dampening effect of advanced vegetation growth on spring dust storms (r = 0.49, p = 0.01), with a one-day earlier green-up date …

Breakdown Analysis Of Electrostatic Discharge, Sam Hansen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Oct 2014

Breakdown Analysis Of Electrostatic Discharge, Sam Hansen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Posters

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and the associated material breakdown is the primary cause for spacecraft damage due to space environment interactions. This phenomenon occurs when the space plasma fluxes charge a craft to high voltages where insulating materials then break down. This failure allows current to flow freely through the material which; can damage or destroy onboard electrical systems. My work focuses on the effects of these breakdowns on suspect materials commonly used for electrical insulation in space. The USU Material Physics Group has performed ESD tests on hundreds of samples to date. The ESD damage sites of these samples have …

Feasibility Of A Mangrove-Based Carbon Business In Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar, Janice Liang Oct 2014

Feasibility Of A Mangrove-Based Carbon Business In Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar, Janice Liang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Mangrove ecosystems, along with other coastal vegetation, have tremendous potential to be abundant carbon sinks. With the prospect of carbon sequestered in coastal ecosystems starting to be explored in carbon credit markets, this study attempts to assess the feasibility of a mangrove-based carbon business in Makoba Bay, Unguja, Zanzibar. An aboveground carbon estimation demonstrates that the mangrove forest of Makoba Bay is a recovering ecosystem, but has the potential to be initiated into a program such as REDD+ in the future. Social surveys in both Makoba Bay and Chwaka Bay also indicate that a number of improvements would have to …

Intuitive Patenting, Emily Michiko Morris Oct 2014

Intuitive Patenting, Emily Michiko Morris

Faculty Scholarly Works

Patentable subject matter determinations are ultimately based not on judicial doctrines, tests, statutes, or even on the economic rationales underlying the patent system; rather, the fundamental touchstone for what qualifies as patentable technology is simply intuition. Specifically, despite the Federal Circuit's rejection of "technological arts" as a linguistically bright-line test, patentable subject matter decisions inevitably devolve into what is, at base, an intuitive sense of what constitutes technology of the type protectable under the patient system.

Indoor Acoustic Mapping And Geolocation, Thomas Shyy Oct 2014

Indoor Acoustic Mapping And Geolocation, Thomas Shyy

Open Access Theses

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely used in navigations of flights, vehicles and travelers nowadays. However, the signals are not always available and there are some cases where the receptions of the GPS signal can be lost because of the presence of urban canyons, buildings, tunnels and forests. Another down side for the GPS is that indoor positioning can be really difficult because of the greater signal interference from the indoor.

On the other hand, the concept of echolocation has also been used for positioning purposes. Echolocation offers a promising approach to improve the quality of life of people …

Tunable Impedance Matching Network Fundamental Limits And Pracitical Considerations, Wesley N. Allen Oct 2014

Tunable Impedance Matching Network Fundamental Limits And Pracitical Considerations, Wesley N. Allen

Open Access Dissertations

As wireless devices continue to increase in utility while decreasing in dimension, design of the RF front-end becomes more complex. It is common for a single handheld device to operate on a plethora of frequency bands, utilize multiple antennae, and be subjected to a variety of environments. One complexity in particular which arises from these factors is that of impedance mismatch. Recently, tunable impedance matching networks have begun to be implemented to address this problem. ^ This dissertation presents the first in-depth study on the frequency tuning range of tunable impedance matching networks. Both the fundamental limitations of ideal networks …

Epistemic Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xiaoxiao Chen Oct 2014

Epistemic Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xiaoxiao Chen

Open Access Dissertations

In the field of uncertainty quantification (UQ), epistemic uncertainty often refers to the kind of uncertainty whose complete probabilistic description is not available, largely due to our lack of knowledge about the uncertainty. Quantification of the impacts of epistemic uncertainty is naturally difficult, because most of the existing stochastic tools rely on the specification of the probability distributions and thus do not readily apply to epistemic uncertainty. And there have been few studies and methods to deal with epistemic uncertainty. A recent work can be found in [J. Jakeman, M. Eldred, D. Xiu, Numerical approach for quantification of epistemic uncertainty, …

Determination Of Disulfide Bond Connecting Patterns Via Tandem Mass Spectrometry (Msn) And Biomolecular Ion/Radical Reactions, Kirt Lenroy Durand Oct 2014

Determination Of Disulfide Bond Connecting Patterns Via Tandem Mass Spectrometry (Msn) And Biomolecular Ion/Radical Reactions, Kirt Lenroy Durand

Open Access Dissertations

Disulfide bond formation is one of the most common post translational modifications to occur in proteins and naturally occurring peptides. Disulfide bond formation plays a critical role in stabilizing their three-dimensional structure; therefore, it is very important to pinpoint the correct disulfide bond connecting pattern in order to fully understand the biological functions of these proteins and peptides. To fully characterize an analyte containing disulfide bonds, the sequence must first be known followed by the disulfide bond connecting pattern. This presents an analytical challenge as there are very few methodologies that can produce those essential pieces of information. The gold …
