A Qualitative Study Of Problematic Reasonings Of Undergraduate Electrical Engineering Students In Continuous Time Signals And Systems Courses, Farrah Fayyaz Oct 2014

A Qualitative Study Of Problematic Reasonings Of Undergraduate Electrical Engineering Students In Continuous Time Signals And Systems Courses, Farrah Fayyaz

Open Access Dissertations

Continuous Time Signals and Systems is a core course in the undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum. The topics covered in this course are difficult to learn conceptually because a significant number of topics are abstract, disconnected from a student's daily life, and make extensive use of mathematical modeling and formulas. Engineering educators have put in significant effort to design effective educational strategies for this course; however, there remained a gap in qualitative understanding of students' reasonings associated with difficulties in conceptual learning of the course content. This study aims to fill this gap by identifying problematic reasonings of undergraduate electrical engineering …

The exchange of carbon dioxide is a key measure of ecosystem metabolism and a critical intersection between the terrestrial biosphere and the Earth's climate. Despite the general agreement that the terrestrial ecosystems in North America provide a sizeable carbon sink, the size and distribution of the sink remain uncertain. We use a data-driven approach to upscale eddy covariance flux observations from towers to the continental scale by integrating flux observations, meteorology, stand age, aboveground biomass, and a proxy for canopy nitrogen concentrations from AmeriFlux and Fluxnet-Canada Research Network as well as a variety of satellite data streams from the MODIS …

Promoting Information Systems Major To Undergraduate Students - A Comprehensive Investigation, Lei Li, Chi Zhang, Guangzhi Zheng

Faculty Articles

Weak enrollment growth has been a concern for many Information Systems (IS) programs in recent years although the IT/IS job market remains strong. Stimulating undergraduate students’ interest to IS programs have been a challenge. In this paper, the researchers took a comprehensive approach to study how to effectively promote a Management Information Systems (MIS) program to undergraduate students at a medium-size public university in the southeastern US. Using a survey-based method, the researchers first investigated the factors that impact students’ selection of majors and identified students’ perceptions on an MIS program. In this paper, an MIS program promotion strategy was …

Regulation By Hypothetical, Mehrsa Baradaran Oct 2014

Regulation By Hypothetical, Mehrsa Baradaran

Vanderbilt Law Review

A new paradigm is afoot in banking regulation-and it involves a turn toward the more speculative. Previous regulatory instruments have included geographic restrictions, activity restrictions, disclosure mandates, capital requirements, and risk management oversight to ensure the safety of the banking system. This Article describes and contextualizes these regulatory tools and shows how and why they were formed to deal with industry change. The financial crisis of 2008 exposed the shortcomings in each of these regimes. In important ways, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 ('Dodd-Frank') departs from these past regimes and proposes something new: Call it …

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar Oct 2014

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar

Conference Presentations

The study of Liberal Arts is absent in Indonesian higher education. A strong participatory democracy may require skills engendered by a rigorous study of the liberal arts. When I arrived in Indonesia in August 2014, I found a vibrant Indonesian democracy and smart, eager-to-learn university students who were unsatisfied with MKDU (General Education) classes. A strong democracy requires skills engendered by a rigorous study of Liberal Arts. Restructuring the MKDU classes as Liberal Arts classes using active, student-centered instruction should lead to higher levels of critical thinking in college students, higher quality of teachers in local schools, and better citizenship …

Pushing The Boundaries Of Tractable Ontology Reasoning, David Carral, Cristina Feier, Bernardo Cuenca Grau, Pascal Hitzler, Ian Horrocks

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We identify a class of Horn ontologies for which standard reasoning tasks such as instance checking and classification are tractable. The class is general enough to include the OWL 2 EL, QL, and RL profiles. Verifying whether a Horn ontology belongs to the class can be done in polynomial time. We show empirically that the class includes many real-world ontologies that are not included in any OWL 2 profile, and thus that polynomial time reasoning is possible for these ontologies.

Connections Between Student Explanations And Arguments From Evidence About Plant Growth, Jenny Dauer, Jennifer H. Doherty, Allison L. Freed, Charles W. Anderson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We investigate how students connect explanations and arguments from evidence about plant growth and metabolism—two key practices described by the Next Generation Science Standards. This study reports analyses of interviews with 22 middle and high school students postinstruction, focusing on how their sense-making strategies led them to interpret—or misinterpret—scientific explanations and arguments from evidence. The principles of conservation of matter and energy can provide a framework for making sense of phenomena, but our results show that some students reasoned about plant growth as an action enabled by water, air, sunlight, and soil rather than a process of matter and energy …

Research-Based Design Initiative

This project set out to evaluate the validity and usefulness of CFD within the contemporary Design Practice. Initially attempting to analyze a specifi c design it became clear a more general study was needed. Analyzing natural ventilation is an infi nitely complex process, to determine the level of simplication required for use involved breaking the natural process down and analyzing the pieces seperately and then together. By using this process it become clear how the process can be used by architecture fi rms within their design process.

Evolutionary Modeling And Building Energy Efficiency: How Can Building Performance Evaluation Be Integrated Early Into An Ever-Accelerating Design Process?, Portland State University. School Of Architecture

Research-Based Design Initiative

With the increasing demand for energy efficient buildings, designers have begun to face a new challenge- how can performance evaluation be integrated into the ever-accelerating design process? The design and performance evaluation of a building are, in most cases, divorced. The designer will often have to halt, freeze the design, and wait for performance results to filter back. That gap between freezing the design and awaiting results can be weeks. In that time the design may have changed dramatically and the results made useless. In other instances, the final design is submitted to be evaluated, results are received, and critical, …

Theoretical Analysis Of Steady State Genetic Algorithms, Alexandru Agapie, Alden H. Wright Oct 2014

Theoretical Analysis Of Steady State Genetic Algorithms, Alexandru Agapie, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Evolutionary Algorithms, also known as Genetic Algorithms in a former terminology, are probabilistic algorithms for optimization, which mimic operators from natural selection and genetics. The paper analyses the convergence of the heuristic associated to a special type of Genetic Algorithm, namely the Steady State Genetic Algorithm (SSGA), considered as a discrete-time dynamical system non-generational model. Inspired by the Markov chain results in finite Evolutionary Algorithms, conditions are given under which the SSGA heuristic converges to the population consisting of copies of the best chromosome.
