Two Approaches To Collaborative Information Literacy Instruction At A Small Engineering School, Conor Cote, Scott Juskiewicz
Library
Two librarians at a small STEM academic library have partnered with professors to develop and teach chemistry and writing courses. These librarians have successfully worked with professors to serve as an active presence within the classroom. This article describes the challenges of navigating the typical obstacles librarians face when attempting to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, reflects on the benefits of these collaborations, and touches on strategies for implementing similar programs at other institutions. It outlines two distinct approaches to collaborating with professors on credit-bearing information literacy courses, along with the key steps involved in planning and implementing these …

Abstract
We present in situ observations of a shock-induced substorm-like event on 13 April 2013 observed by the newly launched Van Allen twin probes. Substorm-like electron injections with energy of 30-500 keV were observed in the region from L∼5.2 to 5.5 immediately after the shock arrival (followed by energetic electron drift echoes). Meanwhile, the electron flux was clearly and strongly varying on the ULF wave time scale. It is found that both toroidal and poloidal mode ULF waves with a period of 150 s emerged following the magnetotail magnetic field reconfiguration after the interplanetary (IP) shock passage. The poloidal mode …

Investigation And Modeling Of Uranium Polarization For The Electrorefining Of Scrap U-Mo Foils, Melissa Rose
Investigation And Modeling Of Uranium Polarization For The Electrorefining Of Scrap U-Mo Foils, Melissa Rose
Open Access Dissertations
A uranium molybdenum alloy fuel has been proposed to convert research and test reactors from highly enriched uranium to low enriched uranium to increase the proliferation resistance at such reactors. Pyroprocessing has been selected to recover uranium from the scrap produced in the manufacture of this novel fuel type. Electrorefining, the main separation process of pyroprocessing, is modeled through a novel approach using corrosion theory. To use corrosion theory, knowledge of uranium polarization and kinetic parameters such as Tafel constant, transfer coefficient and exchange current density are required. Uranium polarization was investigated at five temperatures and three scan rates in …

With reduction in size, ever greater operational demands are placed on electronics components at all levels of the device, starting from the transistor level to the level of the package and the solder interconnects. Concurrently, there has been a move to more complicated materials systems in order to meet health and environmental guidelines. These trends of reducing size, increasing loads have increased the necessity to understand the mechanisms of the failure. ^ As the length scales are reduced, it becomes increasingly important to consider interfacial and micro-structural effects that can be safely ignored at larger length scales owing to the …
Particle Swarms In Confining Geometries, Eric Robert Boomsma
Particle Swarms In Confining Geometries, Eric Robert Boomsma
Open Access Dissertations
The transport of micro- and nano-particles in subsurface fluid deposits is an area of increasing interest due to the rising use of these particles for consumer and industrial purposes. Subsurface particle transport is complicated by the presence of fractures and fracture networks which govern the paths that particles will be able to take. In this thesis, subsurface particle transport will be investigated using particle swarms; collections of hydro-dynamically interacting particles which exhibit group behavior. The effects of fluid viscosity, particle properties, fracture geometry, and fracture aperture on swarm behavior were experimentally investigated. ^ Swarm parameters were examined in time with …

Studies Of Systems With Nonholonomic Constraints: The Segway And The Chaplygin Sleigh, Joseph Troy Lee Tuttle
Open Access Theses
In this thesis, two systems with nonholonomic systems are investigated: the Segway and the Chaplygin sleigh. Using Lagrangian mechanics, the constrained nonlinear equations of motion for both systems are derived. By use of the nullspace of the constraint matrices, the unconstrained equations of motion can be obtained. For the Segway, these equations are linearized about a zero equilibrium state, placed into state space form and decoupled. A feedback controller is designed about the velocity and heading angle rate reference commands. To compare to the real data from the built Segway, measurement noise was also included in the model. Experimental data …

Cosimplicial Models For Spaces Of Links, Brian A. Munson, Ismar Volić
Faculty Research and Scholarship
We study the spaces of string links and homotopy string links in an arbitrary manifold using multivariable manifold calculus of functors. We construct multi-cosimplicial models for both spaces and deduce certain convergence properties of the associated Bousfield-Kan homotopy and cohomology spectral sequences when the ambient manifold is a Euclidean space of dimension four or more.

A Dual-Defect Model For Predicting Lifetimes For Polymeric Discharges From Accelerated Testing, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison
A Dual-Defect Model For Predicting Lifetimes For Polymeric Discharges From Accelerated Testing, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause catastrophic failures in electronic devices. Estimating the lifetime of dielectrics under prolonged high field exposure is a major design concern for applications including spacecraft, high voltage DC power transmission, and semiconductor electronics. Dielectric strengths listed in engineering handbooks are primarily based on cursory measurements with poor repeatability and tend to overestimate ESD fields in real applications. Standard measurements subject test samples to ≈500 V/s ramp rates until breakdown. We present the results of ESD studies in two prototypical polymer dielectrics using a ramp rate of ≈20 V/4s until breakdown, together with tests applying a …

Cathodolumiescence Studies Of The Density Of States Of Disordered Silicon Dioxide, Jr Dennison, Amberly Evans Jensen
Presentations
Electron bombardment measurements have shown that disordered SiO2 exhibits cathodoluminescence, with an overall intensity that varies with incident electron beam energy and current density, sample temperature, exposure time, and wavelength. A simple model based on the defect density of states—used to explain electron transport in highly disordered insulating materials—has been extended to predict the relative cathodoluminescent intensity and spectral radiance for disordered SiO2 as a function of these variables. The spectral radiance exhibited four distinct bands, corresponding to four distinct energy distributions of defect states within the band gap; each showed different temperature dependence. These localized defect or “trap” states …

The Anyu Of Siku Quanshu Zongmu, Mao Ruifang
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Anyu案语/按语, found in ancient Chinese bibliographies, is an author’s note that adds extra information to the prefaces of different classificatory sections, and may record annotations concerning individual books. Siku quanshu zongmu四库全书总目, which contains 127 occurrences of anyu案语, may be regarded as typical. While anyu案语 are valuable and beneficial to the bibliographical study of ancient Chinese books and to Chinese literary history, study of them has long been neglected and only a few articles have been written. This paper tries to redress this neglect by providing a more comprehensive investigation of the distribution, content and contribution to the bibliographical study of …

Where Art Thou?: Bringing The Arts Into Elementary School Classrooms, Sean Hagen
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There is not enough art education in local elementary schools, and the curriculum, time constraints and funding make increasing arts education difficult. Interviewing a diversity of local elementary school teachers allowed us to get a broad understanding of the situation of the arts in schools, and to discover attitudes toward the arts which might encourage or discourage increasing arts education in schools. More privileged schools with the means to include art education find that students are excited and engaged in learning. There is, however, a lack of training, funding, and time in the curriculum to allow for greater arts education. …

Cathodoluminescence Events Coincident With Muon Detection, Kenneth Zia, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison

Samples of highly disordered insulating material were irradiated with 1 keV electron beams, resulting in three forms of light emission with differing duration: arcs (<1 s duration), flares (~100 s), and cathodoluminescence (as long as beam is on). The arc and cathodoluminescence phenomena are well understood, while the flares are not. Flares were observed at intervals of ~2 per hr. This is within a factor of 2 for the expected muon crosssection at an altitude of Logan, UT (1370 m) caused by high altitude cosmic rays. Based on this suggestive evidence, we have proposed incorporation of standard muon coincidence detection apparatus into our vacuum cathode luminescence test facility. Measurements of the muon cross-section zenith angle and angle-dependence will provide calibration of the muon detector. If muon evidence coincides with the flare events, this will provide definitive evidence of the flare origin. We will discover whether a correlation between flares of charged sample are caused by transitory muons which trigger discharge and subsequent recharging during our testing of space materials.

Taming The Software Chaos: True To Its Promise, Iftdss Eases The Burden Of Fuels Treatment Planning—And Does A Lot More Besides, Gail Wells
Joint Fire Science Program Digests
A key problem reported by the fuels treatment planning community is the difficulty and inefficiency of evaluating and then applying many planning tools and applications. Fuels specialists have struggled to find, load, and learn all the different fuels and fire planning models, not to mention the interface of running, adjusting, and inputting data specific to each model without the ability to easily share inputs/outputs between models.
The Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS) was conceived as a way for users to learn one interface, access a variety of data and models all in one place, and pass data (inputs …
Evaluating A Proposed Farm Best Management Practice: Nitrous Oxide Emissions, In-Bed Nitrate And Carbon Monitoring, And Hydraulic Retention Times Of Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors In Monterey County, California, Christina M. David
SNS Master's Theses
Because surface waters in agricultural regions along the Central Coast of California have relatively high nitrate concentrations, there is a lot of interest to evaluate and implement various practices to improve water quality. This study assessed hydraulic retention times (HRTs), nitrate and carbon concentration gradients, and atmospheric fluxes and dissolved concentrations of nitrous oxide in three denitrification woodchip bioreactors on Salinas Valley farms that treat nitrate at 30 mg/L NO3-N to 180 mg/L NO3-N from field runoff. To evaluate HRT, we used sodium bromide tracer tests on two of the bioreactors, DBR1 and DBR 3, the former which had double …

If We Take Into Account That Constraints Are Soft, Then Processing Constraints Becomes Algorithmically Solvable, Quentin Brefort, Luc Jaulin, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Constraints are ubiquitous in science and engineering. Constraints describe the available information about the state of the system, constraints describe possible relation between current and future states of the system, constraints describe which future states we would like to obtain. To solve problems from engineering and science, it is therefore necessary to process constraints. We show that if we treat constraints as hard (crisp), with all the threshold values exactly known, then in the general case, all the corresponding computational problems become algorithmically unsolvable. However, these problems become algorithmically solvable if we take into account that in reality, …
