Constructing The Democratic Reader: The Functions Of Textual Hybridity In La Noche De Tlatelolco, Manuel Chinchilla
Constructing The Democratic Reader: The Functions Of Textual Hybridity In La Noche De Tlatelolco, Manuel Chinchilla
Diálogo
A study of Elena Poniatowska’s La noche de Tlatelolco as a hybrid text that combines the genres of testimonio and chronicle to reconcile the relationship between history and literature. This article centers on how readership of La noche de Tlatelolco permits a democratic practice that confronts official discourse, particularly the PRI party’s narratives of legitimization, while also fostering an engagement with the original political impulse behind the student movement of 1968.
Teaching Gaby Brimmer: A Disability Studies Approach, Beth Jörgensen
Teaching Gaby Brimmer: A Disability Studies Approach, Beth Jörgensen
Diálogo
Gaby Brimmer (1979), the collaborative “autobiography” of the Mexican disability rights activist, narrates her childhood and young adulthood through the voices of Brimmer herself; her mother, Sari Dlugacz Brimmer; her caregiver, Florencia Morales Sánchez; and Elena Poniatowska. This article presents ideas and resources for teaching Gaby Brimmer from a disability studies perspective, in courses on contemporary Spanish-American literature, women writers, genre theory, human rights and activism, or in a disability studies course.
Violent Effects: Domestic Violence And Poetic Subversive Discourses, Roberta Hurtado
Violent Effects: Domestic Violence And Poetic Subversive Discourses, Roberta Hurtado
Diálogo
Processes of sociosexual geo-racialization consistently render Latinas in the U.S. vulnerable to domestic abuse. Engaging this issue, third space feminists have adapted testimonio as a means for exposing domestic abuse while striving to craft transformative discourses that humanize these women’s experiences of oppression. The dusmic nature of poetry, as defined by Nuyorican poets, lends itself to this task. “Violent Effects” synthesizes poetry’s dusmic nature with third space feminists’ development of testimoniando—or testimonio as an agentic process—to identify how María Luisa Arroyo’s poetry exposes, dignifies and humanizes survivors’ experiences of domestic violence and thereby subverts dehumanization’s violent effects.

To Be An Indigenous Woman Poet In Mexico: An Artistic Act Of Protest, Resistance And Battle, Wendy Call
Diálogo
A study of contemporary Indigenous-language poetry in Mexico, with a special focus on four female poets from Oaxaca and Chiapas, whose work is reaching international audiences: Irma Pineda (Isthmus Zapotec), Enriqueta Lunez (Tzotzil), Mikeas Sánchez (Zoque) and Celerina Patricia Sánchez Santiago (Mixtec). Assessment of a movement toward greater production and changing attitudes about Indigenous-language poets and their work in Mexico during the past decade, and how their advocacy has led to wider publishing opportunities and broader readership, as well as cultural and linguistic preservation.

The Chican@ Nueva Onda As A Poetic Tidal Wave: The Revitalization, Repoliticalization & Redefinition Of “Chican@” Through Poetry, Christopher Carmona
Diálogo
The term Chican@ has in the 21st century undergone a resurgence and new use and practice in border regions and among activist poets, indicating a new civil rights movement, in response to xenophobic laws directed toward the Latin@ community. This movement has taken on many aspects of the 1960s Chicano movement, but what is different is that this resurgence has occurred in the literary arts with writers and artists as the leaders of the movement. This study highlights poets at the forefront of a new Chican@ Renaissance, discussing the history, growth and redefinition of Chican@ poetry during the past thirteen …
The Poetics Of Silence: (Re)Memory Through Poetry Of The Mexican Diaspora, Lauren Espinoza
The Poetics Of Silence: (Re)Memory Through Poetry Of The Mexican Diaspora, Lauren Espinoza
Diálogo
A close reading of poems by Eduardo Corral, Laurie Ann Guerrero and Lorna Dee Cervantes to identify distinct possibilities for silences in the poetry of the Mexican diaspora: adopting, enforcing, and, ultimately, straddling both. Silence is unique to the language of poetry—as relative to a story, a poem is silent because it does not have the words a story does. Poetry, then, functions as (re)memory, a vehicle moving towards creation within the menacing silence of the (re)inscription of the border.

Coercive Assimilationism: The Perils Of Muslim Women's Identity Performance In The Workplace, Sahar F. Aziz
Coercive Assimilationism: The Perils Of Muslim Women's Identity Performance In The Workplace, Sahar F. Aziz
Faculty Scholarship
Should employees have the legal right to "be themselves" at work? Most Americans would answer in the negative because work is a privilege, not an entitlement. But what if being oneself entails behaviors, mannerisms, and values integrally linked to the employee's gender, race, or religion? And what if the basis for the employer's workplace rules and professionalism standards rely on negative racial, ethnic or gender stereotypes that disparately impact some employees over others? Currently, Title VII fails to take into account such forms of second-generation discrimination, thereby limiting statutory protections to phenotypical or morphological bases. Drawing on social psychology and …
Integrated Conservation And Development Projects (Icdps): Characteristics Of Success And Recommendations For Implementation, Emory Smith
Honors Theses
The aim of this study is to investigate integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs) and to help improve their future implementation by identifying the underlying philosophies that make ICDPs successful. Conserving natural ecosystems in developing regions is important, but it is difficult because local people use those ecosystems for their sustenance and are not capable of forgoing that use unless some other means exists for them to earn a living. Consequently, ICDP emerged in the early 1990's as a means to both conserve natural resources and provide economic development for the local people. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of …
Effects Of Globalization On The Use Of The Mediterranean Diet In Spain, Jacob J. Mcgee
Effects Of Globalization On The Use Of The Mediterranean Diet In Spain, Jacob J. Mcgee
Honors Theses
Spain is known for its sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife, and incredible foods. The Mediterranean diet of Spain is praised for its health benefits, but recently it appears that the population has begun to turn away from their original diet. Studies have shown that the Spanish have been experiencing a constant culture change due to globalization since the 1950s when the General Francisco Franco allowed the technocrats to have some control over the government. With a new economic policy, new people and their new ideas flooded the country bring with them their cultures. These cultures influenced the Spanish life changing many …

Role Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Aphasia Therapy And Rehabilitation As Reported By Practicing Speech-Language Pathologists, Meredith Wooley
Honors Theses
This thesis examined the roles of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) within aphasia therapy and rehabilitation. Research compiled in the literature review explained the disorder of aphasia, and the roles of SLPs when working with people who have aphaisa, as outlined in the ASHA policy document Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in The Identification, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Individuals with Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Position Statement (2005b). This study investigated ASHA-certified, masters-level SLPs' preparedness to work with aphasia patients, as well as their familiarity of their roles and resonsibilities in aphasia therapy and rehabilitation, and their awareness of the possible forms of treatment for aphasia. …
Bolivian Public Health Care: Interculturation For Indigenous Rights, Kendra Leigh Wright
Bolivian Public Health Care: Interculturation For Indigenous Rights, Kendra Leigh Wright
Honors Theses
This thesis is concerned with Bolivian public health care, specifically how interculturation plays a part in bringing indigenous rights and representation. By examining indigenous traditional healing and Western medicine, this thesis attempts to answer the question of: is the role of pluralizing medical practices a mechanism that successfully gives more power toward the representation and inclusion of indigenous rights in Bolivia? If so, how exactly has interculturation taken place? This thesis hypothesizes that through projects of cultural sensitivity and the respecting of Aymara and Quechua languages, rituals, and traditions, indigenous representation is enhanced in the Bolivian public health care field, …
Festivals And Revelry: A Study Of Identity In The Cantons Of Modern Switzerland, Courtney Gayle Taylor
Festivals And Revelry: A Study Of Identity In The Cantons Of Modern Switzerland, Courtney Gayle Taylor
Honors Theses
The following paper seeks to address the question of whether or not Fribourg and the other Swiss cantons are able to maintain a cantonal identity in the increasingly globalized political system and what methods are used for this identity preservation. This reproduction of identity in the cantonal system (also referred to as cultural reproduction) will be the focus of my thesis. After looking at the literature on identity formation, familiarizing myself with the history of Switzerland, the cantonal system, and the canton of Fribourg, and finally collecting and analyzing data on identity formation practices in the guise of festivals, I …

Towards A Missiological Model For Worldview Transformation Among Adherents To African Traditional Religion In Yorubaland, Kelvin Okey Onongha
Dissertations
Seventh-day Adventist missions in the western region of Nigeria are a century old, yet reversion to pre-Christian practices such as divination and sorcery are reported, especially during periods of personal crises. This study sought to understand the influence of the traditional worldview on the practices of divination and sorcery and to develop a model that would move the Yoruba Adventists from dependence on these practices to a biblically shaped faith and praxis. A grounded theory approach was adopted for conducting this qualitative research. Data were collected from two focus group discussions and from face-to-face interviews with five pastors, five diviners, …

Fritz Zwicky And The Search For Dark Matter, Kurt Winkler
Faculty Publications
This paper will discuss the life of the Swiss native, Fritz Zwicky, and this article will present information in a linear fashion, starting with some attention-grabbing information about Zwicky's knowledge of dark matter and then lead to a discussion of his youth and some decisions he made at that time, especially dealing with his education. This essay will then describe some of Zwicky's personal relationships and how his sometimes commanding and abrasive personality affected them. The bulk of this article will deal with how Zwicky was ahead of his time in the areas of astrophysics and the theory of dark …

Evaluating The Application Of Research-Based Guidance To The Design Of An Emergency Preparedness Leaflet., E. Hellier, J. Edworthy, L. Newbold, K. Titchener, M. Tucker, E. Gabe-Thomas
School of Psychology
UNLABELLED: Guidelines for the design of emergency communications were derived from primary research and interrogation of the literature. The guidelines were used to re-design a nuclear emergency preparedness leaflet routinely distributed to households in the local area. Pre-test measures of memory for, and self-reported understanding of, nuclear safety information were collected. The findings revealed high levels of non-receipt of the leaflet, and among those who did receive it, memory for safety advice was poor. Subjective evaluations of the trial leaflet suggested that it was preferred and judged easier to understand than the original. Objective measures of memory for the two …

Psychological Reactance And Verbal Defensiveness In The Workplace: The Effects Of Perceived Face Threat And Interactional Justice In Supervisor Requests, Qin Zhang, Donald E. Gibson
Psychological Reactance And Verbal Defensiveness In The Workplace: The Effects Of Perceived Face Threat And Interactional Justice In Supervisor Requests, Qin Zhang, Donald E. Gibson
Iowa Journal of Communication
This study investigated the moderating effects of perceived face threat and interactional justice in supervisor requests on employee psychological reactance and examined the mediating effects of reactance in the relationships of perceived freedom threat, face threat, and interactional justice with verbal defensiveness. Results showed that perceived face threat had significant main effects and moderating effects on reactance, but interactional justice, in spite of its significant main effects, did not have moderating effects on reactance. Results also showed that reactance did not mediate the effects of perceived freedom threat, face threat, and interactional justice on verbal defensiveness in real organizational setting.
Review Of The Outer Limits Of Reason, Michael S. Barr
Review Of The Outer Limits Of Reason, Michael S. Barr
Reviews
This beautifully-written book explores a variety of topics that are either impossible to resolve or unfeasible (and likely permanently so). It is written in such a way that most (although probably not all) of the material will be accessible to non-mathematicians. Both my wife (who studied no mathematics at the college level) and my daughter (whose mathematical training stopped with calculus) read early versions of this book and agree with that assessment. (Full disclosure: both of them, along with me, are thanked in the Acknowledgments). However, there is much in here that was new and interesting to me, so its …
From Chaos To Order: Balancing Cross-Cultural Communication In The Pre-Colonial And Colonial Southeast, Nicole Lynn Gallucci
From Chaos To Order: Balancing Cross-Cultural Communication In The Pre-Colonial And Colonial Southeast, Nicole Lynn Gallucci
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This Master’s Thesis examines the ways in which the culturally distinct groups who inhabited the pre-colonial and colonial Southeast approached cross-cultural communication. The extensive and violent entradas led by Spaniards into the Southeastern interior in the 1500s represent a watershed moment in North American history that deeply impacted the economic, social, and geopolitical landscapes of an already well-populated and politically sophisticated region. The subsequent establishment of St. Augustine in 1565 and the arrival of the British in the mid-seventeenth century are similarly seen as pivotal moments in the region’s history that forced many culturally and linguistically dissimilar groups to interact. …
