Unasur: The Newest 'Global Player' Or Neo-Boliverian Fantasy?, Sara Gwendolyn Ross Jan 2014

Unasur: The Newest 'Global Player' Or Neo-Boliverian Fantasy?, Sara Gwendolyn Ross

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) presents the most recent vision for trade liberalization and political, economic, and social integration amongst South American countries. Unasur has set 2019 as the year by which it hopes to accomplish many of its goals, such as full regional integration and tariff elimination. But, as 2019 slowly approaches, it remains to be seen whether Unasur will in fact be able to reach these goals. While Unasur’s future is certainly compelling, before heralding Unasur as the long-awaited panacea for pure regional integration, important lessons can be drawn from previous attempts at and iterations of …

Combining Elicited Imitation And Fluency Features For Oral Proficiency Measurement, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Carl Chritensen Jan 2014

Combining Elicited Imitation And Fluency Features For Oral Proficiency Measurement, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Carl Chritensen

Faculty Publications

The automatic grading of oral language tests has been the subject of much research in recent years. Several obstacles lie in the way of achieving this goal. Recent work suggests a testing technique called elicited imitation (EI) that can serve to accurately approximate global oral proficiency. This testing methodology, however, does not incorporate some fundamental aspects of language, such as fluency. Other work has suggested another testing technique, simulated speech (SS), as a supplement or an alternative to EI that can provide automated fluency metrics. In this work, we investigate a combination of fluency features extracted from SS tests and …

Situated Intercultural Communication: Domestic And International Student Interaction, Emily Spitzman Jan 2014

Situated Intercultural Communication: Domestic And International Student Interaction, Emily Spitzman

Open Access Dissertations

As higher education continues to internationalize, more institutions are making it an educational priority to increase intercultural competence among all students. Despite this goal, institutions regularly place students in intercultural programs without facilitating training and reflection on intercultural learning, with the expectation that students will learn from contact alone. There is a need for investigation into situated intercultural communication, for the limited studies that do examine interactions between international and domestic students do not look at the interactions themselves, do not situate the interactions in a specific context, and often examine only the students‘ international/domestic statuses or countries of origin …

Opting-In Online: Participants’ Perceptions Of Knowledge Construction In Public Forum Communities, Jennifer C. Lee Jan 2014

Opting-In Online: Participants’ Perceptions Of Knowledge Construction In Public Forum Communities, Jennifer C. Lee

Open Access Dissertations

This project examines knowledge making and sharing amid special interest forums, specifically, online forums for herp (reptile and amphibian) hobbyists. In doing so, it addresses a gap in rhetoricians’ understanding of publicness: its effect on writing and people’s perceptions thereof. Few studies measure public writing unless its telos is change or activism. Additionally, despite increased rhetorical scholarship focusing on new media, much current research on forums situates them in classroom-based learning and collaboration, neglecting online forums that are open to public access. This project is a naturalistic inquiry using qualitative methods to explore collaborative public writing that occurs in discourse …

Historically Marginalized Groups In Psychological Science, Celeste Caviness Jan 2014

Historically Marginalized Groups In Psychological Science, Celeste Caviness

Open Access Dissertations

Over the past thirty years there has been a concerted effort to evaluate the inclusion of historically marginalized groups (HMG) – women, racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities, and low-income individuals – in research. This has been done through content analyses of research literature published in top-tier psychological journals. The purpose of this study was to examine the research literature to assess the degree to which the current literature includes ethnic, racial, and sexual minorities, women, and those of varying socioeconomic status and whether research questions focusing on historically marginalized groups are being examined within mainstream journals. Six issues from 2012 …

Firefighters’ Multimodal Literacy Practices, Timothy R. Amidon Jan 2014

Firefighters’ Multimodal Literacy Practices, Timothy R. Amidon

Open Access Dissertations

This study explores the ways that firefighters’ utilize multimodal literacy practices to construct and communicate knowledge in environments where risk is present. Specifically, this dissertation sketches the interrelationships between alphabetic, aural, cognitive, gestural, kinesthetic, oral, tactile, spatial, and visual genres which evolve and circulate within embodied, analog, and digital media on firegrounds. A heuristic research methodology was constructed by borrowing and adapting components from extant multimodal and digital ethnography, community-based research, and writing activity and genre research. Using a range of emergent digital research methods, data was captured during six observational periods wherein 75 participants engaged in live-fire training activities; …

Essays On Social Media And Branding, Gema Vinuales Jan 2014

Essays On Social Media And Branding, Gema Vinuales

Open Access Dissertations

Social media have changed the way individuals interact with each other, with corporations and with brands; and thus, the context for brand management. Recognizing the potential of social media to reach massive audiences, brands have become more “social” and embraced the new media; however, many are still struggling to effectively harness their potential. Research has aimed to offer some insights into the emerging social media challenges and have established some differentiated streams of research that serve as a general framework for these dissertation manuscripts. Specifically, we identify WOM communications, online reviews, media channels comparisons, online community influence, and co-creation as …

Teaching Introductory Life Science Courses In Colleges Of Agriculture: Faculty Experiences, Mark Balschweid, Neil A. Knobloch, Bryan J. Hains

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Insignificant numbers of college students declaring STEM majors creates concern for the future of the U.S. economy within the global marketplace. This study highlights the educational development and teaching strategies employed by STEM faculty in teaching first-year students in contextualized life science courses, such as animal, plant, and food sciences. Teaching strategies employed by faculty were reported as largely influenced by the “way they were taught.” Faculty members shared they used ‘lecture’ and ‘laboratory’ interchangeably as both educational environment and instructional practice. This study provides evidence for engaging university teaching faculty in a systematic process of professional development in teaching …

The Double Sighted: Visibility, Identity, And Photographs On Facebook, Jeanette C. Vigliotti Jan 2014

The Double Sighted: Visibility, Identity, And Photographs On Facebook, Jeanette C. Vigliotti

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of this analysis is to uncover the tools of Facebook identity construction. Because Facebook users have the ability to control the images and information associated with their profiles, reactionary scholars typically classify Facebook identity as a symptom of cultural narcissism. However, I seek to displace the fixation on the newness of the medium in order to interrogate the possibility of a society that has internalized surveillance. Using Michel Foucault’s theories on panopticism and heterotopia, I examine the role photographs play in the construction of an individual on Facebook, and the ways in which user photographs are positioned …

A Study Of English Acknowledgements Written By Efl Thai Learners, Kandaporn Jaroenkitboworn

PASAA

This research investigates English acknowledgements in dissertations written by Thai PhD students, particularly the generic structure and linguistic patterns of gratitude expressions used in the acknowledgements. Following the line of the move analysis in acknowledgements of Hyland (2004), this article analyzed 70 acknowledgements accompanying PhD dissertations in the area of English language study. The study result shows that the generic structure comprises 3 moves: thanking, announcing, and signing-off. The first move is obligatory whereas the other two are optional. Various gratitude expressions are used in response to different assistance forms. Also, the study result reveals the aspects of politeness, social …

The Effect Of Self-Explanation And Strategy Training On L2 Reading Comprehension Using An Intelligent Tutoring System, Hongxia Fu Jan 2014

The Effect Of Self-Explanation And Strategy Training On L2 Reading Comprehension Using An Intelligent Tutoring System, Hongxia Fu

Theses and Dissertations

While research suggests that secondary language (L2) learners at postsecondary institutions face academic reading challenges, and that reading strategy training can improve primary language (L1) learners' reading comprehension, it remains a challenge to find scalable ways to deliver such training to L2 learners. Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) have been shown to be nearly as effective as human tutors while reaching potentially unlimited numbers of learners in a variety of subjects, including reading comprehension. However, few studies have explored the effectiveness of such systems for improving L2 learners' reading comprehension. Self-Explanation Reading Training (SERT) is an instructional model that combines self-explanation …

Exploring Thai Teachers' Conceptual Beliefs About Reading And Their Influences On Instructional Practices, Patchara Boonteerarak Jan 2014

Exploring Thai Teachers' Conceptual Beliefs About Reading And Their Influences On Instructional Practices, Patchara Boonteerarak

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Theories of reading have altered throughout history. Originally, reading was understood as a process of knowledge transmission, but currently, reading is viewed as a process of meaning construction. The changing conceptualizations about the reading process have emphasized the active role of readers among second language (L2) students and altered perspectives on L2 reading instruction in a more constructive way. An unawareness of the changing conceptualizations of L2 reading may be the main obstacle to the professional development among teachers of L2 reading. This study aims to explore Thai teachers' conceptual beliefs about reading, instructional practices in L2 reading classrooms, influences …

"More Than A Wishful Dream", Wai Yong Tang Jan 2014

"More Than A Wishful Dream", Wai Yong Tang

Senior Honors Theses

“More than a Wishful Dream” is a musical drama that explores the Christmas story through the eyes of Joseph. The author hopes to bring a realization that the Christmas story was an event that truly happened by exploring the emotional and cultural realities surrounding the birth of Christ through the musical. This thesis also includes a study on the different elements of playwriting, musical theatre and songwriting. These elements were compiled and incorporated into the musical as part of the thesis. In the musical, Joseph dreams to be great like his forefathers and to save his people from suffering. However, …

Increasing Target Language Usage In Level Ii Spanish Language Classes, Kathleen Anne Bolstad Jan 2014

Increasing Target Language Usage In Level Ii Spanish Language Classes, Kathleen Anne Bolstad

Theses and Dissertations

In the process of learning a new language students often feel uncomfortable using their language skills in an original and spontaneous manner. In a class that is not conducted solely in the Target Language (TL), it can be difficult to motivate and encourage students to use more of the TL. In this study I explored the use of code-switching as a strategy to encourage my Level II Spanish language students to use more language without fear of making a mistake or forgetting vocabulary. I also administered a survey to students to discover what they felt would be helpful in creating …

Proust, The Suffering Artist, Matthew G. Buyachek Jan 2014

Proust, The Suffering Artist, Matthew G. Buyachek

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

This thesis examines the interrelationship between suffering and art in the context of À la recherché du temps perdu by Marcel Proust. I first trace a lineage of suffering and art, conduct a literature review of relevant criticism on Proust's work and on suffering and art, and finally explicate volumes one and five of Proust's magnum opus. I interpret the scene of the goodnight-kiss to be the genesis of Marcel’s search and his path to artistry. In this scene, Marcel profanes his mother qua maternal and artistic ideal, and subsequently sublimates Mme de Guermantes and Albertine in an attempt to …

Face Work In Spanish Language Service Encounters Between Native And Nonnative Speakers In The United States, Laura Callahan Jan 2014

Face Work In Spanish Language Service Encounters Between Native And Nonnative Speakers In The United States, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Linguistic politeness plays an important role in the opinions people form of one another, especially when it offers one of the few clues an individual may have of his or her interlocutor’s disposition, as is the case in anonymous, first-time service encounters. Face is a fundamental concept in politeness theory. To borrow a summary from Callahan (2011):

Positive face refers to the desire to be liked and appreciated, while negative face refers to the desire to be unimpeded (Brown and Levinson 1987). Positive and negative face are often characterized as corresponding to the dichotomies of involvement vs. independ- ence, intimacy …

Plotting Devices: Literary Darwinism In The Laboratory, John Hay Jan 2014

Plotting Devices: Literary Darwinism In The Laboratory, John Hay

English Faculty Research

Critics of literary Darwinism like to point out the weaknesses of its scientific scaffolding, but the real flaw in this research program is its neglect of literary history and stylistic evolution. A full-fledged scientific approach to literary criticism should incorporate the kind of work being done by Franco Moretti at the Stanford Literary Lab—a quantitative analysis of the history of literary form. While Moretti and the literary Darwinists are almost never mentioned together, I contend that their work is not only compatible but also necessarily so for a more consilient literary criticism. The Darwinian aesthetics promoted by Denis Dutton can …

Establishing Credibility Online Through Impression Management Strategies, Shauna Vanbogart Jan 2014

Establishing Credibility Online Through Impression Management Strategies, Shauna Vanbogart

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This project sought to understand how individuals establish credibility online through impression management strategies. Applying Goffman’s (1959) impression management theory, the literature review highlighted four leading self-presentation tactics that bolster credibility effectively on the Internet: structure and aesthetics of personal websites, publication of content that is consistent, insightful and authentic, the use of self-disclosure, and verification of expertise through testimonials and references. These four self-presentation strategies were applied to analyze eight entrepreneurs who have successfully built a credible presence online. These case studies were further developed through the design of online course that teaches entrepreneurs how to use impression management …

Silent Voice: Buberian Philosophy And Nonverbal Disability, Elizabeth M. Minium Jan 2014

Silent Voice: Buberian Philosophy And Nonverbal Disability, Elizabeth M. Minium

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Individuals who are developmentally disabled and nonverbal, possessing little if any symbolic expressive or receptive language, are virtually invisible in the United States. This study presupposes that all persons, including those who are nonverbal and/or developmentally disabled, have a unique “voice” and contribution to the communication practices of humanity and society. This philosophical study analyzes the qualities of communication of developmentally disabled, nonverbal individuals and their communication partners through the lens of Martin Buber’s dialogic philosophy. Conclusions suggest: 1) developmentally disabled, nonverbal persons do relate and communicate, and definitions of “communication” and “dialogue” should include those who do not think …

Mothers, Daughters, And The Intent To Breastfeed, Aquila Brooke Mendez-Valdez Jan 2014

Mothers, Daughters, And The Intent To Breastfeed, Aquila Brooke Mendez-Valdez

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The decision to breastfeed is a deeply personal one for every woman. There are often factors such as family and medical support that are outside a new mother's control and can influence her in how she views the nourishment of her infant. Previous studies have documented the effect doctors, nurses, and lactation consultants have on breastfeeding success. Less popular, however, is investigating how familial support and interpersonal communication plays a role in encouraging or discouraging the practice. This study examines how mothers and daughters communicate about breastfeeding, and the role it plays in both Mexico and the United States in …

Rio Grande Valley Student Completion Rates In University Schools Outside Of The Rio Grande Valley, Demetrius James Villanueva

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this study is to create understanding of why Hispanic students from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas have trouble completing their higher educational goals once they leave the area. This study applies communication accommodation theory to better understand how students adapt their communication styles in their academic, personal, and social lives. This study also applied standpoint theory to see how growing up in the Rio Grande Valley impacts the students’ sense of selves. Ethnographic research was conducted with five students attending four different universities around Texas. Through observations and interviews, the researcher found several ways that the …

How Broadcast Journalists Use Twitter To Present The Message Of The State Of The Union: #Sotu, Jeffrey Hayden Haynes Jan 2014

How Broadcast Journalists Use Twitter To Present The Message Of The State Of The Union: #Sotu, Jeffrey Hayden Haynes

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

With the social media revolution and the sense of urgency people have, the way people receive their news has altered. Twitter is becoming a more popular platform to receive news because of its ability to spread news faster than any other medium. This study addresses the ability of broadcast journalists to spread their agenda using Twitter. This study is a content analysis and quantitative analysis of the Twitter accounts of broadcast journalists Greta Van Susteren and Chris Matthews during the 2014 State of the Union address. Using the Agenda Setting theory and the Two Step Flow model, this study found …

Communication And Longevity In Deaf-Hearing Marriage, Michael B. Ballard Jan 2014

Communication And Longevity In Deaf-Hearing Marriage, Michael B. Ballard

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

"Marriage with a hearing person is frowned upon. Deaf marry Deaf approximately nine times out of ten" (Lane et al, 1996, p. 71). With the assistance of Burgoon's (1988) Expectancy Violations Theory and Philipsen's (1997) Speech Codes Theory, this thesis identifies cultural and language conflicts that may arise in Deaf-hearing marriages and questions the general assumption that 90% of all Deaf-hearing marriages end in divorce. This assumed statistic prompts the research question: What communicative practices do spouses use to contribute to the longevity of Deaf-hearing marriages? Fifty-seven individuals completed an original mixed-method survey identifying how they resolve cultural and language …

Connecting The Multigenerational Workforce Through Interpretive Listening, Lisa Voso Jan 2014

Connecting The Multigenerational Workforce Through Interpretive Listening, Lisa Voso

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis provides an overview of research surrounding the multigenerational workforce community in the United States. The research reflects agreement among scholars that there are four generations of workers currently making up the workforce in the United States, including Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers and Millennials. The specific influences and attributes of each generation have shaped their communication preferences and linguistic choices made when the generations communicate with one another in the workplace. During conversations between individuals from two different generations, each may feel as if different languages are being spoken, and many conflicts in the workplace are caused by …
