Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the insider/outsider dynamic experienced by individuals as they enter diverse social situations. The shift from insider to outsider is evoked through an art installation of 18 sculptures drawing influence from "goth" subculture, as the viewer enters and interacts with the art space. The subjects of culture and identity are discussed as they pertain to insider/outsider status.

Scripture And Prayer In Christian Education -- Nurturing, Discipleschip, And Retention, Adrienne J. Royo Mar 2014

Scripture And Prayer In Christian Education -- Nurturing, Discipleschip, And Retention, Adrienne J. Royo

Faculty Works

PowerPoint presentation

Can Scripture and Prayer be anchors for success in academia, as well as a forum for nurturing, discipleship, and retention? Christian education bears the objective of spiritual growth and academic achievement. To attain this goal in my classes, each student selects, provides, and models, linguistically-speaking, a chosen Scripture reading, with a life application. Prayer is offered, providing a framework for the formulation of a prayer in the target language, facilitating competence to communicate with God through a newly acquired means. Studies have shown that the ability to express one's inner thoughts in another language increases one's aptitude and …

Community As Resource: Crowdsourcing Transcription Of An Historic Newspaper., Caroline Daniels, Terri L. Holtze, Rachel I. Howard, Randy Kuehn

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Like many cultural heritage institutions, the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Louisville faces the dichotomy of material abundance and budgetary scarcity. Driven by the desire to make historical primary sources accessible online, this organization harnessed the power of the public to transcribe the Louisville Leader, an historic African American newspaper. The first sections of this article define crowdsourcing and describe how it was implemented at the University of Louisville, including the tools adopted and the process used. The latter sections outline the marketing strategy, the public response, and lessons learned from this ongoing project.

Tunisian Theater At The Turn Of The Century: "Hammering The Same Nail" In Jalila Baccar And Fadhel Jaïbi's Theater, Rafika Zahrouni

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My dissertation investigates plays written and directed by Jalila Baccar and Fadhel Jaïbi--recognized as two of the most influential actor-director-playwright pair in contemporary Tunisian theater. This is the first research that addresses the drama of Baccar and Jaïbi, a partnership that spans almost forty years, and is arguably the most significant force in North African Theater. My study analyzes the evolution of Familia Productions, discovering how the role of Familia has changed in accordance with changing political situation, and how political changes have influenced the aesthetics of the theater, and has shifted the style from heavily symbolic to much more …

Linguistic Vomit Ferments The Brain: Exploring The Boundaries Of Narratives, Katherine Dubois Mar 2014

Linguistic Vomit Ferments The Brain: Exploring The Boundaries Of Narratives, Katherine Dubois

Theses and Dissertations

Our minds require binaries to process and categorize information. A given piece of knowledge is either true or false. It helps us to process narratives as fiction or nonfiction. Narratives are neither wholly true or wholly false. Rather the borders that separate them are artificially constructed. By breaking down these barriers, authors break the traditional scheme for understanding literature, but they also lead us to question why the author is making the choices. The confusion leads to a constructive questioning of the purpose of the breakdown. Through this we develop a means of examining experimental narratives..

You Are That: An Upanishadic Approach To Empathic Writing Instruction In A High School Social Science Course, Andrew Otto Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports the results of a qualitative research project investigating an approach to composition instruction in a high school social studies course that is based on the Upanishadic concept of tat tvam asi (you are that). Research for this study was conducted while I taught a section of Non-West History to high school juniors and seniors. This dissertation addresses the issues involved in the teaching of writing in a high school social science course. Specifically it focuses on the issues involved when a teacher attempts to construct a class that engages students to read and write in ways that …

Microrrelato Del “Saber Vivir” En Su Doble Acepción Normativa-Descriptiva: Más Allá De La Parodia Y Los Finales Sorprendentes; Lo Reflexivo, Ary Malaver Mar 2014

Microrrelato Del “Saber Vivir” En Su Doble Acepción Normativa-Descriptiva: Más Allá De La Parodia Y Los Finales Sorprendentes; Lo Reflexivo, Ary Malaver

Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye Mar 2014

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

For over a decade, we have collaborated with secondary school history teachers in an evolving line of inquiry that applies research-based propositions to the design and testing of a problem-based learning framework and a set of wise practices that represent a professional teaching knowledge base for implementing a particular model of instruction, problem-based historical inquiry (PBHI). PBHI centers history instruction on decision-making about persistent societal problems as they occur in particular historical periods. In order to prepare future teachers to be better able to implement this model in their classrooms, we have integrated components of this model throughout our secondary …

The Sages And Philosophers: Reevaluating The Interaction Between Ancient Israel And Greece, Mike Tolliver Mar 2014

The Sages And Philosophers: Reevaluating The Interaction Between Ancient Israel And Greece, Mike Tolliver

Theses

The previously assumed late development of the Jewish sacred writings led many to conclude that the Hellenistic world greatly influenced both the content and worldview of the Hebrew authors. Though the evidence for the historical reconstruction that required the Jewish texts to develop late has been called into question, scholars have yet to reconsider the implications this has for the antiquity of the ideas contained within the Jewish writings and their influence on surrounding cultures. Whereas it was once taken for granted that the Jews borrowed form and content from their Greek neighbors, it is now possible, even probable, that …

Teaching And Learning For Intercultural Sensitivity: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of American Domestic Students And Japanese Exchange Students, Yoko Hwang Sakurauchi Mar 2014

Teaching And Learning For Intercultural Sensitivity: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of American Domestic Students And Japanese Exchange Students, Yoko Hwang Sakurauchi

Dissertations and Theses

Global student mobility has become a dynamic force in American higher education. Integrating international students into diverse campus environments provides domestic as well as foreign students with enriched learning opportunities. However, a diverse campus climate itself will not make college students interculturally competent. Intentional curricular design is critical for overcoming issues such as resistance and reinforcement of stereotypes, but the research literature is extremely limited on effective pedagogical strategies for cultivating college students' intercultural sensitivity.

This paper explicates a research study to investigate college students' development of intercultural sensitivity through an intentional course design utilizing Kolb's (1984) learning styles cycle …

An Explanatory Mixed-Methods Approach To Tracing “Career Pathways” Policy In Virginia: How School Counselors And Student Demographics Influence Implementation Fidelity, Michael Ormsmith Mar 2014

An Explanatory Mixed-Methods Approach To Tracing “Career Pathways” Policy In Virginia: How School Counselors And Student Demographics Influence Implementation Fidelity, Michael Ormsmith

Theses and Dissertations

This explanatory mixed-methods policy analysis describes how school counselors' thoughts and attitudes contribute to the implementation fidelity of the Academic and Career Plan (ACP) policy in a suburban Virginia school division. A quantitative survey investigated counselor thoughts about the policy, implementation behaviors, and counselor ideas about equity issues related to providing college and career planning services to at risk students. Counselor interviews were conducted to provide deeper insight about the street level implementation practices and beliefs of counselors. Findings reveal that counselors place substantial value in the ACP policy and think the process is useful for connecting student interests and …
