Did Pre-Clovis People Inhabit The Paisley Caves (And Why Does It Matter)?, Stuart J. Fiedel Mar 2014

Did Pre-Clovis People Inhabit The Paisley Caves (And Why Does It Matter)?, Stuart J. Fiedel

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The date and processes of initial human colonization of the Americas are crucial issues for the understanding of human biological and cultural development. For example, Soares et al. (2009) cited the American archaeological record to validate their proposed revision of the human mitochondrial molecular clock. Their suggested mutation rate puts the date of rapid expansion of Native American clades at around 13,500–15,000 cal BP. Similarly, Poznik et al. (2013) have used the “high-confidence archaeological dating” of the initial peopling of the Americas to calibrate the rates of both Y-chromosome and mtDNA mutation and thereby to reconcile the ages of the …

Global Engineering Competency In Context: Situations And Behaviors, Brent K. Jesiek, Qin Zhu, Sang Eun Woo, Julia Thompson, Andrea Mazzurco

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

Engineering graduates encounter worlds of professional practice that are increasingly global in character. This new reality poses challenges for engineering educators and employers, who are faced with the formidable task of preparing engineers to be more effective in diverse national and cultural contexts. In response, many commentators have proposed lists of attributes or competencies deemed important or even essential for global engineering work. However, such lists have tended to lack explicit grounding in empirical studies of engineering practice, including typical kinds of work situations and related behavioral requirements. As a step toward establishing a more robust definition and developmental theory …

The Invisible Composition Classroom: The Reciprocity Of Face, Identity, And Politeness, Pennie L. Gray Mar 2014

The Invisible Composition Classroom: The Reciprocity Of Face, Identity, And Politeness, Pennie L. Gray

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the role of face and identity as they arise in a first year composition classroom. Using the illuminating theoretical framework of linguistic politeness theory, new understandings of the social interactions in the composition classroom are unveiled. Specifically, through an analysis of the politeness strategies that students use during the peer review process, it becomes clear that students prefer to temper their critique of others' work rather than openly criticize that work. Additionally, students offer far more positive feedback than their peers' work perhaps merits, minimize the revision work they suggest, and downplay their own authority over each …

Effect Of Recent Historical Events On Migration And Isonymic Stratification Among The Rama Amerindians From Nicaragua, Norberto F. Baldi Mar 2014

Effect Of Recent Historical Events On Migration And Isonymic Stratification Among The Rama Amerindians From Nicaragua, Norberto F. Baldi

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The Rama Amerindians from southern Nicaragua are one of few indigenous populations inhabiting the east coast and lowlands of southern Central America. Early 18th century ethnohistorical accounts depicted the Rama as a mobile hunter-gatherer and horticulturalists group dispersed in household units along southern Nicaraguan rivers. However, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Rama settlement patterns changed to aggregated communities due to increased competition for local resources resulting from non-indigenous immigration. This study’s objective was to discern the degree of relatedness between and within subdivisions of seven of these communities based on patterns of surname variation and genealogical data. We applied …

Gender Differences In Text Messaging, Sara R. Shawcroft Mar 2014

Gender Differences In Text Messaging, Sara R. Shawcroft

Theses and Dissertations

Text messaging is a significant social phenomenon that merits investigation. Communications theories are well suited to this type of research because text messaging serves as both mediated communication and interpersonal communication. This kind of research can also contribute to a deeper understanding of communication differences between genders. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether there are gender differences in the use of text messaging and, if so, what the differences are. Participants for the study were recruited via convenience sampling. The sample consisted of 27 participants ages 18--35; 14 were female and 13 were male. Data were collected …

Private Law In The Gaps, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Mar 2014

Private Law In The Gaps, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Fordham Law Review

Private law subjects like tort, contract, and property are traditionally taken to be at the core of the common law tradition, yet statutes increasingly intersect with these bodies of doctrine. This Article draws on recent work in private law theory and statutory interpretation to consider afresh what courts should do with private law in statutory gaps. In particular, it focuses on statutes touching on tort law, a field at the leading edge of private law theory.

This Article’s analysis unsettles some conventional wisdom about the intersection of private law and statutes. Many leading tort scholars and jurists embrace a regulatory …

Pace Law Review

The presenting question for the 2012 Symposium was how can engaged scholarship enhance teaching to prepare students for the legal profession and help to solve the critical problems of the day.12 The event employed a format designed to discover new ways of thinking about engaged scholarship. Each participant was asked to draft and submit in advance brief reflections on this question. At the Symposium, each professor attended seven breakout sessions held throughout the day. At each of these sessions, one participant presented to a small group of professors for ten minutes on her reflections, pinpointing issues, challenges, and themes involved …

The Politics Of Indigenous Social Struggle In Colombia, Gilberto Villasenor Iii Mar 2014

The Politics Of Indigenous Social Struggle In Colombia, Gilberto Villasenor Iii

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The core research question that this thesis asks is: How can we conceptualize the resistance of contemporary indigenous social movements? This thesis argues that Arturo Escobar's ideas about the ways in which social movements can critically engage processes of development best allow us to conceptualize Nasa indigenous social movements of Colombia as resistance to neoliberal globalization. The thesis uses Escobar’s three concepts: alternative development, alternative modernity, and alternatives to modernity as a conceptual lens with which to analyze three projects by the Nasa indigenous people of Colombia: the communitarian economy, the Proyecto Global, and the Tul home garden project. The …

Which Factors Explain The Rising Ethnic Heterogeneity In Italy? An Empirical Analysis At Province Level, Cristina Cattaneo Mar 2014

Which Factors Explain The Rising Ethnic Heterogeneity In Italy? An Empirical Analysis At Province Level, Cristina Cattaneo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper investigates the determinants of ethnic heterogeneity of the Italian provinces. Among other factors, the paper tests empirically whether gradual improvements in distant communication boost the generation of ethnically heterogeneous provinces. Consequently to easier communication, movers increasingly rely on an enlarged community for identity transmission, rather than on localized peer effects of the ethnic enclaves. The empirical estimation provides support to this hypothesis. Improvements in internet communications are found to increase the ethnic diversity of the Italian provinces.

First-Level Transitivity Rule Method For Filling In Incomplete Pair-Wise Comparison Matrices In The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Bojan Srdjevic, Zorica Srdjevic, Bosko Blagojevic Mar 2014

First-Level Transitivity Rule Method For Filling In Incomplete Pair-Wise Comparison Matrices In The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Bojan Srdjevic, Zorica Srdjevic, Bosko Blagojevic

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The paper discusses the problem of performing the prioritization of decision elements within the multicriteria optimization method, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), with incomplete information. An approach is proposed on how to fill in the gap in the pair-wise comparison matrix generated within an AHP standard procedure; that is, to reproduce one missing judgment of the decision maker while assuring the reproduced judgment belongs to the same ratio scale used while other judgments are elicited. The first-level transitivity rule (FLTR) approach is proposed based on screening matrix entries in the neighborhood of a missing one. Scaling (where necessary) and geometric averaging …

Eemd-Based Speaker Automatic Emotional Recognition In Chinese Mandarin, Yuqiang Qin, Yudong Qi Mar 2014

Eemd-Based Speaker Automatic Emotional Recognition In Chinese Mandarin, Yuqiang Qin, Yudong Qi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Emotion feature extraction is the key to speech emotional recognition. And ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD) is a newly developed method aimed at eliminating emotion mode mixing present in the original empirical mode decomposition(EMD). To evaluate the performance of this new method, this paper investigates the effect of a parameters pertinent to EEMD: speech emotional envelope. Firstly, a speaker emotional envelope features extraction based on EEMD is proposed in the paper. Using the piecewise power function in speech emotional envelope has a better effect in emotional identification. At the same time, the proposed technique has been utilized for classification of four …

Weight Analysis Based On Anp And Qfd In Software Quality Evaluation, Kewen Li, Yu Zhang, Wenying Liu Mar 2014

Weight Analysis Based On Anp And Qfd In Software Quality Evaluation, Kewen Li, Yu Zhang, Wenying Liu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Over the past two decades, considerable efforts focused on improving software quality to satisfy the customers needs in software industry, but it is hard to deal with the customers needs for its vague and inexact characteristic. In order to evaluate software quality accurately and comprehensively, the weights of customers needs and the weights of technical attributes of the software are determined by ANP and QFD in the paper. An illustrated example is presented to show the application of the proposed model, and the results show that the weights of product characteristics and the customers needs in HoQ (House of Quality) …

An Information Security Threat Assessment Model Based On Bayesian Network And Owa Operator, Kehe Wu, Shichao Ye Mar 2014

An Information Security Threat Assessment Model Based On Bayesian Network And Owa Operator, Kehe Wu, Shichao Ye

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Information security threat assessment involves two aspects, namely, technology and management. A great amount of uncertainties exist in the assessment, which cannot be strictly quantized. Thus, the completely objective information security risk assessment is hard to realize. To this end, this research proposed an information security threat assessment model based on Bayesian Network (BN) and OWA operator. Firstly, with the integration of expert knowledge, the conditional probability matrix of reasoning rules in BN was clarified, as a basis of the establishment of information security threat assessment model. Then, with the group-decision method of OWA operator, the subjective judging information of …

Cochlear Implants, Language Acquisition, And Speech Intelligibility: The Effect Of Age At Implantation, Danielle Becker Mar 2014

Cochlear Implants, Language Acquisition, And Speech Intelligibility: The Effect Of Age At Implantation, Danielle Becker

Library Research Prize Student Works

A review of the current literature on outcomes of individuals using cochlear implants, especially in the relationship between age at implantation and speech intelligibility was conducted. Literature describing norms for language acquisition and hearing outcomes with the use of other devices (i.e. hearing aids) was also assessed. A clear pattern of normal language acquisition is shown by the literature of this field. Literature assessing the effectiveness of cochlear implants shows that although most cochlear implant users are not able to catch up to hearing age-mates, cochlear implants are significantly more effective than traditional hearing aids in language acquisition. The research …

Logic Of Scientific Discovery: How Physical Induction Affects What Is Computable, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Mar 2014

Logic Of Scientific Discovery: How Physical Induction Affects What Is Computable, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most of our knowledge about a physical world comes from physical induction: if a hypothesis is confirmed by a sufficient number of observations, we conclude that this hypothesis is universally true. We show that a natural formalization of this property affects what is computable when processing measurement and observation results, and we explain how this formalization is related to Kolmogorov complexity and randomness. We also consider computational consequences of an alternative idea also coming form physics: that no physical law is absolutely true, that every physical law will sooner or later need to be corrected. It turns out that this …

Wealth And Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of The Influence Of Wealth During Chinese International Students' Acculturation, Linshan Fu Mar 2014

Wealth And Acculturation: A Qualitative Study Of The Influence Of Wealth During Chinese International Students' Acculturation, Linshan Fu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing number of Chinese international students coming to the United States every year, a more in-depth understanding of these international students’ acculturation is necessary and urgent. Given the fact that past researches mostly describe Chinese immigrants, migrates or international students as oppressed cultural adaptors, who cannot avoid being marginalized; who suffer from various adjusting problems; and who have to make use of acculturative strategies to adapt to the new country, this thesis takes the factor of wealth and its relation with class, status and power into account during Chinese international students’ acculturation under the globalized context. Instead of …
