Sterilization And The Mass Media: Representations Of Women In The California State Prison System (2006-2010), Ashley Barbara Jasper Mar 2014

Sterilization And The Mass Media: Representations Of Women In The California State Prison System (2006-2010), Ashley Barbara Jasper

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

My research analyzes how mass media, specifically mass media journalism, represents women who are incarcerated and their reproductive rights. Grounded in an ideological rhetorical analysis of articles published from the top fifteen United States news sources on permanent sterilizations that occurred in California women’s prisons from 2006-2010, this paper explores how language both creates and reinforces the segregation of women who are incarcerated from the remainder of society. Drawing on media and sociological theories, this analysis begins by examining the diction choices made by news media to convey how the women were asked to receive sterilizations, as well as how …

Automatic Readability Detection For Modern Standard Arabic, Jonathan Neil Forsyth Mar 2014

Automatic Readability Detection For Modern Standard Arabic, Jonathan Neil Forsyth

Theses and Dissertations

Research for automatic readability prediction of text has increased in the last decade and has shown that various machine learning methods can effectively address this problem. Many researchers have applied machine learning to readability prediction for English, while Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) has received little attention. Here I describe a system which leverages machine learning to automatically predict the readability of MSA. I gathered a corpus comprising 179 documents that were annotated with the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) levels. Then, I extracted lexical and discourse features from each document. Finally, I applied the Tilburg Memory-Based Learning (TiMBL) machine learning system …

Gratitude And Displacement: The Political Obligations Of Refugees, Jason R. D'Cruz Mar 2014

Gratitude And Displacement: The Political Obligations Of Refugees, Jason R. D'Cruz

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

On what basis, and to what extent, are refugees obligated to obey the laws of their host countries? Consideration of the specific case of asylum-seekers generates, I think, two competing intuitions: (1) the refugee has a prima facie obligation to obey the laws of her host country and (2) none of the popularly canvassed substrates of political obligation—consent, tacit consent, fairness, or social role—is at all apt to explain the presence of this obligation. I contend that the unfashionable gratitude account of political obligation does the best job of accounting for the intuitions. As has been noticed by other commentators, …

The Effect Of Age On Second Language Acquisition In Older Adults, Charisse Alaine Major Mar 2014

The Effect Of Age On Second Language Acquisition In Older Adults, Charisse Alaine Major

Theses and Dissertations

A primary purpose of second language (L2) research is to determine what factors hinder or help L2 acquisition. One aspect that has a strong effect on L2 proficiency is learners' age of onset of acquisition (AOA) (Johnson & Newport, 1989). These studies and others suggest that younger learners are more adept than older learners at learning an L2, especially to a near-native level. However, some older learners can become quite proficient in an L2 (Ioup, et al. 1994; Bialystok, 1997; Bongaerts, 1999), although learners who have acquired the L2 over the age of 30 are rarely studied. Why is it …

"Die Mauer Im Kopf": Aesthetic Resistance Against West-German Take-Over, Arwen Puteri Mar 2014

"Die Mauer Im Kopf": Aesthetic Resistance Against West-German Take-Over, Arwen Puteri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Even 24 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, modern day Germans are still preoccupied with the contentious dynamics of the post-Wall unification process. Concern with geo-political fractiousness is deeply rooted in German history and the reason for Germany's desire to become a unified nation. The Fall of the Wall, and the subsequent rejection of socialism, was a chance to recover and unify what was perceived to be an "incomplete" nation. Yet, despite these actions, social unity between East and West Germans has never occurred and the Wall still persists as a metaphorical barrier in the minds of German …

Becoming Rey Ileto: Language, History, And Autobiography, Vicente L.; Rafael Mar 2014

Becoming Rey Ileto: Language, History, And Autobiography, Vicente L.; Rafael

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle inquires into the relationship between translation and autobiography in the work of Reynaldo Ileto. In Pasyon and Revolution, English and Tagalog are juxtaposed in a relationship of translation, indicating linguistic complexity and a politics of language that are deflected in Ileto’s later autobiographical writings. Yet, autobiography can also work like translation, but in the opposite direction of Pasyon and Revolution. Rather than loosen linguistic and social hierarchies, autobiography reinforces them. Ileto’s narrative tells of the splitting and substitution of selves, the excavation and overcoming of the father’s name, and the replacement of the “unfinished revolution” project with stories of …

Designing And Evaluating A Russian Elicited Imitation Test To Be Used At The Missionary Training Center, Jacob R. Burdis Mar 2014

Designing And Evaluating A Russian Elicited Imitation Test To Be Used At The Missionary Training Center, Jacob R. Burdis

Theses and Dissertations

Elicited Imitation (EI) is an assessment approach that uses sentence imitation tasks to gauge the oral proficiency level of test takers. EI tests have been created for several of the world's languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese, French, and Mandarin. Little research has been conducted for using the EI approach with learners of Russian. This dissertation describes a multi-faceted study that was presented in two journal articles for the creation and analysis of a Russian EI test. The EI test was created for and tested with Russian-speaking missionaries and employees at the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, UT. The first …

Translation As Argument: The Nontranslation Of Loob In Ileto’S Pasyon And Revolution, Ramon; University Guillermo Mar 2014

Translation As Argument: The Nontranslation Of Loob In Ileto’S Pasyon And Revolution, Ramon; University Guillermo

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle discusses Ileto’s nontranslation of the Tagalog concept of loob as integral to the argument and rhetorical persuasiveness of his seminal work, Pasyon and Revolution (1979). The meaning of loob that readers gather is a deeply religious and mystical one. However, the idiom of loob has multifarious and varied usages, and in the vast majority of cases loob is a prosaic term. Using some methods in the field of corpus linguistics, thisarticle demonstrates that reambiguating Ileto’s translations could lead to different interpretations.KEYWORDS: Corpus linguistics • loob • Reynaldo Ileto • Andres Bonifacio • Philippine revolution

The Jury As A Political Institution: An Internal Perspective, Robert P. Burns Mar 2014

The Jury As A Political Institution: An Internal Perspective, Robert P. Burns

William & Mary Law Review

In this Essay, I will briefly describe some of the more obvious ways in which the jury has been considered a political institution. I will then discuss the senses in which we can understand the term “political” in the context of the American jury trial. I will describe the senses in which Hannah Arendt, perhaps the most important political philosopher of the twentieth century, tried to distinguish between “the political” and the “the legal” and the limitations of any such distinction. I will then turn to the heart of this Essay, a description of the ways in which the American …

Examining Teacher Perceptions Of The Appalachian Dialect In One Rural Appalachian Elementary School, Kathy Brashears Mar 2014

Examining Teacher Perceptions Of The Appalachian Dialect In One Rural Appalachian Elementary School, Kathy Brashears

The Rural Educator

While numerous studies focus on dialect in educational settings, this research focuses on teacher perception of the Appalachian dialect in one rural elementary school. Data collected, mainly through interviews with educators, indicate that teachers sometimes view the Appalachian dialect as impeding their teaching of Standard English. Implications of the study include that teachers may benefit from professional development that provides opportunities for self-reflection on the way they teach and use Standard English as well as how they teach students to use different registers or code-switching skills. Through this type of professional engagement, teachers may better understand their role in modeling …

The Ready Materials For Another World: Frontier, Security, And The Hindustan-Tibet Road In The 19th Century Northwestern Himalaya, Kyle J. Gardner Mar 2014

The Ready Materials For Another World: Frontier, Security, And The Hindustan-Tibet Road In The 19th Century Northwestern Himalaya, Kyle J. Gardner

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article examines the different ways in which the British conceived of and configured the northwestern Himalaya in the mid-19th century. It focuses on the proposal, construction, and justification of the Hindustan-Tibet Road from the late 1840s through to the 1860s. By examining this particular episode in British frontier formation, I hope to show that the pacific perception of this “natural frontier” region allowed for a plurality of configurations that would not be possible on the more contested and violent imperial fronts. Only when this region was integrated into a conceptually unified frontier did it become subsumed into a larger …

Waking The Watchdog: Needs, Opportunities, And Challenges Of Environmental Advocacy In Modern Bhutan, Hilary Oliva Faxon Mar 2014

Waking The Watchdog: Needs, Opportunities, And Challenges Of Environmental Advocacy In Modern Bhutan, Hilary Oliva Faxon

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In a half-century, the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan has emerged from isolation to achieve international recognition as a model of alternative development. The small country’s Gross National Happiness philosophy emphasizes sustainable development, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, and good governance over the long-favored global metric of success: Gross Domestic Product. Bhutan’s historic environmental record has been strong, but modernization and the 2008 transition to democracy are changing the ecological and socio-political landscape, requiring the adaptation of conservation strategy. This paper draws on historic and policy analysis, ethnographic observation, and qualitative interviews with 20 of Bhutan’s key stakeholders to identify needs, opportunities, and …

Students’ Experiences In Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning: A Discourse Analysis Of Group Interaction, Rintaro Imafuku, Ryuta Kataoka, Mitsuori Mayahara, Hisayoshi Suzuki, Takuya Saiki

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Interdisciplinary problem-based learning (PBL) aims to provide students with opportunities to develop the necessary skills to work with different health professionals in a collaborative manner. This discourse study examined the processes of collective knowledge construction in Japanese students in the tutorials. Analyses of video-recorded data elicited from three multidisciplinary cohorts and their learning portfolios provided insights into their participation and introspection during the discussions. The results indicate there were two patterns of knowledge construction: (a) co-constructions between students from different disciplines and (b) elaborations between students from the same discipline. Their learning processes were mediated by their cultural assumptions, professional …
