Components Of Effective Writing Content Conferences In A Sixth-Grade Classroom, Paul Ricks
Components Of Effective Writing Content Conferences In A Sixth-Grade Classroom, Paul Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
Students are now required to show proficiency in writing through performance on standardized tests. Educators and researchers are looking for ways to improve persuasive and argumentative writing created by students. The writing content conference setting gives educators and students opportunities to discuss student writing in a one-on-one format in which students receive feedback. Ideally, this helps them to create multiple drafts of writing that improve with each revision. Many practitioner guides have been created that offer suggestions as to how conferences can be conducted and what types of interactions can theoretically occur. Few, however, have examined what actually happens during …

Transcription And Translation Of A Yearly Letter From 1619 Found In The Japonica Sinica 71 From The Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, Jason Michael Wilber
Theses and Dissertations
This project is a transcription and translation of a 21-page annual letter written about the Cochinchina mission for the year 1619 by the Jesuit missionary João Rodrigues Girão. In 1619 the Cochinchina mission consisted of central and southern Vietnam. The two Jesuit residents at this time were located in the city of Faifo, in the province of Cacham, and Nuocman, in the province of Pulocamby. A semi-diplomatic and diplomatic transcription style is used for the transcription, with a dynamic-equivalent (sense-for-sense) style used for the translation.
Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen
Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The Lapp Fund (“Finnefondet” in Norwegian) was an important instrument in the norwegianization policy toward the Sámi and Finnish minorities between 1852 – 1921. Two studies, one from the midst 1950s (Dahl 1957) and one from the early 1980s (Eriksen & Niemi 1981), have been the standard works on this period. Recent archival studies (Grenersen N.d. & Maliniemi 2009, 2010) prove the need for a new look at the Lapp Fund documents. Through a detailed archival study Maliniemi has shown that the Sámi and the Finnish languages was much used in a local political administration. But the documents written in …
Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani
Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation focuses the lens of queer studies and trauma studies on YA literature published in the United States between 1960 and 2010 to demonstrate that authors embed cultural messages in YA texts. Those messages for YA readers intend to model behavior considered appropriate and teach about normative sex and gender roles. Individuals between the ages of 10 and 20 comprise YA readership, and the means of teaching these readers cultural norms include imagery and cautionary tales. The content of the literature inculcates views of acceptable behaviors with respect to sexuality and gender roles and generally conflates sex and gender. …
Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino
Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
What I will attempt in this essay is to bring the critique to Schoenberg's artistic legacy first on the grounds of the philosophical debate that was going on in those years in the German-speaking world, more specifically between Idealism and Materialism. The second step will be that of bringing the understanding of Schoenberg methods on a cognitive level; and in doing so, I will establish theoretical ties between those philosophical systems and cognitive systems; namely the Cognitivist and the Connectionist approaches. The third step will be that of mirroring the association between the philosophical plane and the cognitive one in …
The Dp Category And Serbian Nominal Structure, Ivana Laterza
The Dp Category And Serbian Nominal Structure, Ivana Laterza
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis investigates nominal structure in Serbian, focusing on the issue of DP paramaterization. Since the introduction of DP as a syntactic category in the late 1980s (Fukui and Speas (1986), Abney (1987)), various investigators have questioned its universality on the basis of " article-less" languages, such as Japanese and Serbian. Two proposals have emerged. The Universal DP-Hypothesis holds that all languages project DP (Progovac (1998), Rappaport (2001), Basic (2004), Cinque (2005), i.a.). The Parameterized DP-Hypothesis claims that languages without (definite) articles do not project DP (Fukui (1986), Corver (1992), Zlatic (1997), Boskovic (2005), Despic (2011), i.a.). The second view …

This study investigates why and how bilinguals speakers tend to code switch on social media such as; Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Bilingual speakers who were born in the US, who adapted English as their second language or who have learned Spanish as their second language in school, usually tend to combine the two languages, English and Spanish, in order to get across their point of view to others. For this reason, this investigation was created to analyze how code- switching can influence people when it's exposed on media. There were three social medias with the total of 37 participants who …
Gender, Number, Nouns & Adjectives: A Study Of Grammatical Agreement In Second Language Learners Of Arabic & Spanish, Anne-Marie Marguerite Poulos
Gender, Number, Nouns & Adjectives: A Study Of Grammatical Agreement In Second Language Learners Of Arabic & Spanish, Anne-Marie Marguerite Poulos
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis investigates the causes of gender and number agreement errors in learners of both Arabic and Spanish as second languages. Data was collected from each of these groups during beginner level language courses at a university. There were a total of eight tests. The first six were adjective selection activities focusing on a specific noun phrase or sentence structure. The last two were written tests, elicited by images, where students had to produce their own nouns and adjectives. The common first language (L1) of the majority of participants is English, which lacks adjective agreement and does not have the …
Teaching And Learning In Fourth Space: Embodying Praxis, Becoming Role Model, Nicole Galante
Teaching And Learning In Fourth Space: Embodying Praxis, Becoming Role Model, Nicole Galante
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
If 21st century students can ask their mobile devices questions and receive nearly instant answers, how then can 21st century teachers enact an engaged pedagogy? One possibility is by learning with and in front of students, thus creating <&ldquo>fourth space<&rdquo>--a space in which teachers embody praxis and become simultaneous models of and participants in education. This dissertation provides a new framework for English Teacher Education that centers on fourth space and the ways that teachers and students can engage in critical contact zones from within it. Drawing on critical pedagogy, combining various perspectives about identity formation and reflection theories …&rdquo>&ldquo>
Conducting Visitor Travel Surveys: A Transit Agency Perspective, Gregory L. Newmark
Conducting Visitor Travel Surveys: A Transit Agency Perspective, Gregory L. Newmark
Journal of Public Transportation
Visitors represent an important potential market for transit. Unfortunately, since visitors generally lack local phone numbers and residential addresses, they constitute a hard-tosurvey population, and relatively little is known about their travel behaviors and preferences. Transit agencies seeking to better understand and better serve this market will need to conduct a visitor travel survey. Surprisingly few visitor travel surveys have been undertaken, and none have been designed expressly to meet the needs of transit agencies. This research addresses this gap in the public transportation planning literature by identifying and exploring the key issues a transit agency needs to consider to …
We Put Down Our Guns And Picked Up Microphones: Community Radio As A Conduit For Community Development In Guatemala, Elizabeth Halpin
We Put Down Our Guns And Picked Up Microphones: Community Radio As A Conduit For Community Development In Guatemala, Elizabeth Halpin
Latin American Studies ETDs
The intent of this thesis is to explore how community radio in Guatemala is used as a tool for community development. The concept of development I use is based off the idea that in order to build and maintain a sustainable quality of life there must be a solid community foundation for social capacity. Approaching radio as a conduit for change, I examine the various roles the radio takes on in order to enhance the overall quality of life by serving as (1) a channel for community knowledge; (2) a platform for indigenous rights; (3) a pillar for community solidarity; …

Variable Education Exposure And Cognitive Task Performance Among The Tsimane, Forager-Horticulturalists, Helen Elizabeth Davis
Anthropology ETDs
At present, we know very little about the transition from traditional learning skills to models of standardized learning, and how it can influence the way one understands and solves problems. This research will examine cognitive performance and the factors affecting variation across communities and between individuals as it changes with age. The objective of this dissertation is to measure cognitive performance among children between 8 and 18 years of age exposed to variable levels of formal schooling in order to investigate three main research questions: (1) Whether exposure to schooling and increased performance in school-based abilities, such as math and …

Afro-Colombians And The Encroachment Of Paramilitaries On The African Palm Oil Sector, Stacie Hecht
Anthropology ETDs
The African palm oil industry in Colombia has burgeoned in the last decade, with state-sanctioned promotions and new developmental productions for the expansion of these plantations seeking to provide economic stability for the country. In addition, with the passing of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Colombia in 2011, as well as deals with several European countries for the exportation of the product, comes an even greater demand than previously known for the industry. However, the continuation of this endeavor will lead to the devastation of the bio-diverse lands being used for economic gains. Furthermore, palm oil …
Learning The Intention Embedded In The Natural Language Texts: Focused Studies On Connotation And Deception, Song Feng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In natural-language texts, certain information intended by the author, such as connotation, deception, sarcasm, humor, may not be stated explicitly. Recognizing such authorial intention is one of the keys to truly understanding human communications. There are rapidly increasing interests in uncovering the intention that is embedded in the textual content for real-life applications, such as opinion mining, deception detection, news-gathering, text generation, and educational testing. However, identifying the intended information computationally can be very challenging as it usually requires appropriate syntactic and semantic schemes for interpretations or inferences, and sometimes, the factor of the world knowledge. Previous work addressing authorial …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Abstract: This study focuses on stereotypes about Germany, its culture and people, held by learners of German in a big public university in Malaysia. It examines not only the stereotypical representations of the target language country but also assesses its favourability and salience, which has not been done previously. The findings revealed that the students’ stereotypes about Germany were varied and diverse. Also, they were overwhelmingly positive. The top three salient categories of images about Germany were related to technology, famous personalities – for the most part football players and scientists – and cars. The findings also indicated that very …

A Comparative Study Of Testing Semantic Web Services, N. Anari, H. Saboohi, G. Ahakian
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Web Services provide efficient reusability mechanism, thereby reducing the development time and cost. Mostly the source code of web services is unavailable to other developers who use these services. The manual effort spent by them in testing these web services is very large in order to increase the interoperability. Thus, automated testing needs to be developed for testing these Web services. This paper reviews test cases for Web Services using reduction techniques Pair-Wise Testing (PWT) and Orthogonal Array Testing (OAT) and compares the two techniques with general method. The structure of Web Services is specified using UML diagrams. The pre …

Adequacy assessment of the existing Time of Dispatch (TD) rules is an academic primary step to improve the regulation of electronic commerce laws. This study aims to evaluate the ASEAN countries based on the adequacy of their TD rules. We propose an extended Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for evaluation of ASEAN countries’ TD based on experts’ judgments. Fuzzy TOPSIS is initially a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method. In this study, we extend it to a one criterion group decision making method. A group of academic experts is assigned for the judgment …

Online Pattern Recognition In Subsequence Time Series Clustering, S. Zolhavarieh, S. Aghabozorgi, T.Y. Wah
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
One of the open issues in the context of subsequence time series clustering is online pattern recognition. There are different fields in this clustering such as e-commerce, outlier detection, speech recognition, biological systems, DNA recognition, and text mining. Among these fields pattern recognition is one the essential concept. To implement the idea of online pattern recognition, we choose sequences of ECG data as a subsequence time series data. Additionally, using ECG data can help to interpret heart activity for finding heart diseases. This paper will offer a way to generate online pattern recognition in subsequence time series clustering in order …

Named Entity Recognition In Chinese Clinical Text, Jianbo Lei
Named Entity Recognition In Chinese Clinical Text, Jianbo Lei
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Objective: Named entity recognition (NER) is one of the fundamental tasks in natural language processing (NLP). In the medical domain, there have been a number of studies on NER in English clinical notes; however, very limited NER research has been done on clinical notes written in Chinese. The goal of this study is to develop corpora, methods, and systems for NER in Chinese clinical text.
Materials and methods: To study entities in Chinese clinical text, we started with building annotated clinical corpora in Chinese. We developed an NER annotation guideline in Chinese by extending the one used in the 2010 …
Focusing On The Negative: Cultural Differences In Expressions Of Sympathy, Birgit Koopmann-Holm, Jeanne L. Tsai
Focusing On The Negative: Cultural Differences In Expressions Of Sympathy, Birgit Koopmann-Holm, Jeanne L. Tsai
Psychology
Feeling concern about the suffering of others is considered a basic human response, and yet we know surprisingly little about the cultural factors that shape how people respond to the suffering of another person. To this end, we conducted 4 studies that tested the hypothesis that American expressions of sympathy focus on the negative less and positive more than German expressions of sympathy, in part because Americans want to avoid negative states more than Germans do. In Study 1, we demonstrate that American sympathy cards contain less negative and more positive content than German sympathy cards. In Study 2, we …

This research examines how reading and writing on digital platforms establishes public and private spheres in Tokyo, Japan. Based upon findings from a group of students at an international University, I develop new modes of thinking about people and their use of Internet capable devices by exploring the paradoxes present in contemporary literacies. Contextualizing reading and writing within the speech patterns and exchange rituals (aisatsu) which mark public spheres in Japan, writing practices are found to reflect multiple nuanced identity performances in which the varied use of the cultural principles uchi/soto (inside/outside) and ura/omote (back/front) create parallel publics. Constructed by …
