Geopolitics, Borders, And Federalism: Challenges For Post-War Iraq, Paul G. Lockhart Dec 2014

Geopolitics, Borders, And Federalism: Challenges For Post-War Iraq, Paul G. Lockhart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I enabled the victorious Western powers to implement the Sykes-Picot Treaty and reshape the geopolitical structure of the Middle East. The imposition of arbitrary borders on the Middle East region, specifically the state of Iraq, would lead to significant conflicts over the course of the 20th century. In 2003, a US-led invasion would further compound the instability and sectarian conflict within Iraq by completely dismantling the state. In the years after the invasion, the United States has been directly involved unsuccessfully in trying to rebuild and stabilize the …

Developing A Contextualization Of Students’ Mathematical Problem Solving, Sean P. Yee, Jonathan Bostic Dec 2014

Developing A Contextualization Of Students’ Mathematical Problem Solving, Sean P. Yee, Jonathan Bostic

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This paper investigates how students contextualize mathematical problem solving, not the actual problems. When students attempt to solve problems, what contexts (situational, cultural, or conceptual) do they evoke to describe their experiences with problem solving? The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice emphasize contextualizing and decontextualizing problems, but what does this mean in practice? Middle and high school students were asked to attempt ability-appropriate problems during semi-structured interviews in this qualitative study. Situational contexts were analyzed using representation analysis (symbolic and nonsymbolic) while cultural contexts were analyzed using linguistic analysis (metaphors). The synergy of these two analyses developed a …

The (Not So) New Normal: A Queer Critique Of Lgbt Characters And Themes In Primetime Network Television Situational Comedies, Robert Dallas Byrd Jr. Dec 2014

The (Not So) New Normal: A Queer Critique Of Lgbt Characters And Themes In Primetime Network Television Situational Comedies, Robert Dallas Byrd Jr.

Dissertations

This analysis of primetime situational comedies feature LGBTQ characters argues that through heteronormative and homonormative constructions of sexuality, race, gender, and class, many LGBTQ people are rendered invisible in the mainstream. Through discourse analysis, the study describes how these programs work to normalize gay and lesbian identity, which then resembles the dominant heterosexuality, aiding in the advancement of white, middle class gays, who privatize sexuality and mimic dominant conventions of gender, race, sexuality, and class in the public sphere. This research is important in understanding the American public’s most recent shifts in public opinion on issues of marriage equality and …

Food Choices And Practices During Pregnancy Of Immigrant Women With High-Risk Pregnancies In Canada: A Pilot Study, Gina M A. Higginbottom, Helen Vallianatos, Joan Forgeron, Donna Gibbons, Fabiana Mamede, Rubina Barolia

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Background: Immigrant women may be regarded as a vulnerable population with respect to access and navigation of maternity care services. They may encounter difficulties when accessing culturally safe and appropriate maternity care, which may be further exacerbated by language difficulties and discriminatory practices or attitudes. The project aimed to understand ethnocultural food and health practices and how these intersect in a particular social context of cultural adaptation and adjustment in order to improve the care-giving capacities of health practitioners working in multicultural perinatal clinics.
Methods: This four-phase study employed a case study design allowing for multiple means of data collection …

A Movement Tool Kit For The Divergent And Convergent Cps Guidelines: Instruction Cards And Activity Floor Mats, Adela Vangelisti

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

A Movement Tool Kit for the Divergent and Convergent CPS Guidelines:

Instruction Cards and Activity Floor Mats

Movement is as natural to humans as breathing is, and, yet, passivity starts early in schools. We are taught to sit still and in silence for long periods of time. By the time we reach adulthood and enter the workforce, we have almost forgotten our sense of embodiment. This lack of movement is counter-productive, not only to learning but to the development of creativity as well. For this project, I designed a tool to recapture the joy and playfulness of movement. Furthermore, the …

Voys Lessons: Whirling Words In Chaucer’S “House Of Rumour", Nicola Blake Dec 2014

Voys Lessons: Whirling Words In Chaucer’S “House Of Rumour", Nicola Blake

Publications and Research

“Voys Lessons: Whirling Words in Chaucer’s ‘House of Rumour’” examines the lability of sound and its use in the dissemination, transposition, and authorship of stories within The House of Fame, a text exemplifying the mobility and flexibility of misused or unhinged words, as expressed through sound as opposed to text. By engaging the use and interpretation of sound in contrast to words, this new reading concentrates on the idea of narrative as material artifact with limited stasis. Geffrey’s pseudo-authorship, through his voyeuristic stance, engages the textuality of sounds and shows the related subtlety, elasticity, and democratic sociohistorical aspect of …

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith Dec 2014

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith

Linguistics Faculty Works

The typical medical education curriculum does not address language development for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. However, this issue is medical because of the frequency with which DHH children as a population face health complications due to linguistic deprivation. The critical period for language development is early; if a child does not acquire an intact language before age five, the child is unlikely to ever have native-like use of any language. Such linguistic deprivation carries risks of cognitive delay and psycho-social health difficulties. Spoken language is inaccessible for many DHH children despite assistive-technology developments. But sign languages, because they are …

Representations Of Disability In Of Mice And Men And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: Avoiding Handicapism In The Classroom, Lyndsay L. Mccabe Dec 2014

Representations Of Disability In Of Mice And Men And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: Avoiding Handicapism In The Classroom, Lyndsay L. Mccabe

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this thesis, I examine two novels that feature characters with disabilities and that are often taught in secondary English classes. These texts will be analyzed through a disability studies perspective - a form of analysis that is not often taught in schools. The disability studies perspective involves looking at disability in a critical light and examining the social, cultural, and political ramifications of assumptions that are made about those considered to be " disabled" by the able-bodied majority. Using this lens, I will explore the assumptions about disability that seem to be represented in these works through their use …

" Bienvenido Al Vecindario" : Inserting Spanglish Nonwords Into English Versus Spanish Phonological Neighborhoods., April Pufahl Dec 2014

" Bienvenido Al Vecindario" : Inserting Spanglish Nonwords Into English Versus Spanish Phonological Neighborhoods., April Pufahl

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

If speech perception and production share lexical representations, then properties of these representations should have similar effects in both modalities. Likewise, if the system supporting lexical processing is fundamentally the same regardless of the language implemented, then a given property should produce the same effect across all languages. However, previous research suggests cross-modal and cross-linguistic differences for one property: phonological neighborhood density, a measure of the number of similar-sounding words in a language. These studies have relied on existing words, affording little control over the numerous, and possibly confounding, properties associated with each word. To avoid these potential pitfalls, I …

Democracy And Its Others, Jeffrey Harry Epstein Dec 2014

Democracy And Its Others, Jeffrey Harry Epstein

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Today's unprecedented levels of human migration present urgent challenges to traditional conceptualizations of national identity, nation-state sovereignty, and democratic citizenship. The instrumental valorization or vilification of foreignness for nationalistic ends has long-determined who is to be included within or excluded from " the people" of the democratic state. Against this instrumentalization, I argue that foreignness is an originary and constitutive element of democratic political identity which severs the links among nationality, citizenship, and democratic rights. Accordingly, a re-conceptualization of democratic rights is required that reflects the structural necessity of foreignness to democratic political identity. | 225 pages

Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse Dec 2014

Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation advocates a model of dialogue as an approach to education and to philosophical discourse itself that is capable of acknowledging and accommodating the manifold possibilities for human thought. Contemporary philosophy is permeated by a loss of certainty and the increasingly problematic nature of the concept of truth, and the complication of these concepts exposes significant limitations in the ways we conceptualize thought itself. Working in this vein, Gilles Deleuze identifies what he calls an " image of thought," which characterizes the forms we have traditionally allowed thinking to take. His critique of this image, along with its subsequent …

The Placiality Of Thought, Brian A. Irwin Dec 2014

The Placiality Of Thought, Brian A. Irwin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

All experience is embodied and, concomitantly, all experience is emplaced. It follows that abstract thought, as a mode of experience, is always emplaced. In what sense is this the case? Following the insights of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, this dissertation seeks to answer this question. A first key insight comes from Phenomenology of Perception: namely, the suggestion that every thought is a bodily experience, and that abstract thought expresses bodily capacities that, through imagination, enter into realms of the virtual. A second key insight comes from Merleau-Ponty's later philosophy, especially The Visible and the Invisible: this is his account of language as …

Conflict And Cooperation As Social Responses To Ecological Change, Nicholas A. Seltzer Dec 2014

Conflict And Cooperation As Social Responses To Ecological Change, Nicholas A. Seltzer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines ways the environment conditions individual incentives to participate in collective action. I hypothesize that as resources become scarce, individuals are more willing to participate in individually-costly collective action, including intragroup cooperation and intergroup hostility. The first and second of three studies establish a unit-of-selection based, game-theoretic foundation for intergroup conflict. The final study explores macro-level implications for the relationship between climate change and violence in Africa. For human beings and other highly social creatures, cooperation is the key adaptation with which we respond to environmental challenges. Faced with resource scarcity, group living becomes increasingly vital for individual …

Learning To Read Recipes : Activity Diagramming With Narrative Event Chains, Ganesa Thandavam Ponnuraj Dec 2014

Learning To Read Recipes : Activity Diagramming With Narrative Event Chains, Ganesa Thandavam Ponnuraj

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this work, we generate activity diagrams of the recipe text automatically, with the help of narrative event chains. Cooking recipes, that have predominantly imperative sentences, present unique challenges in the form of frequent argument drops and co-reference resolution over evolving (or merging) entities. Here, we introduce an unsupervised approach to automatically recover the recipe flow graphs. Then we illustrate the usefulness of our learned models via narrative cloze task; for the automatic evaluation of our learned models, we make use of one of the oft-used task in Discourse analysis, namely the sentence re-ordering and illustrate their utility. To report …

The Role Of The Head Teacher In Supporting Teachers To Enhance Language Competences Among The Learners Transiting From Lower To Upper Primary: A Case Of A Government Aided Primary School In Uganda, Sharon Kirabo Dec 2014

The Role Of The Head Teacher In Supporting Teachers To Enhance Language Competences Among The Learners Transiting From Lower To Upper Primary: A Case Of A Government Aided Primary School In Uganda, Sharon Kirabo

Master of Education

Transition from lower to upper primary is challenging both to teachers and learners, especially in a context where that transition involves switching from one language of instruction to another. As learners struggle to master the language of instruction and the subject content, teachers similarly struggle to find suitable methods that would enhance learners‟ understanding. This challenging situation requires massive support from the head teacher. This study sought to explore the role of the head teacher in supporting teachers to enhance language competences among the learners transiting from lower to upper primary. The study adopted a qualitative case study design and …

The Linguistic Mechanisms Of Knock-Knock Jokes, Jared Weide Dec 2014

The Linguistic Mechanisms Of Knock-Knock Jokes, Jared Weide

2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Humor analysts have not yet accounted for the longstanding popularity of knock-knock jokes, a common and recognizable joke format. A better understanding of the linguistic mechanisms behind these jokes can provide opportunities in fields such as education, technology, and, of course, entertainment. In order to analyze the processes involved, a corpus of jokes was compiled from seven online sources, with a total of 132 different knock-knock jokes collected. A taxonomy of the mechanisms that drive these jokes was created by identifying the linguistic features that generate humor in each. The study found that the pun or alternate meaning at the …

Transfer And The Commodification Of Practice., Kenneth Andrew Smith Dec 2014

Transfer And The Commodification Of Practice., Kenneth Andrew Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation engages in a close reading of the research in composition on transfer, a concept that refers to how the practices learned in one situation influence what a person can do in a future situation. In the studies that have appeared over the last two decades, the results have indicated that not much transfers between writing courses and future contexts, whether they be disciplinary courses or professional workplaces. Yet, despite the increasing prominence of transfer research, little time has been spent discussing the uses and limitations of the concept. To better understand its growing popularity among researchers, I examine …

Temporal Contextual Descriptors And Applications To Emotion Analysis., Haythem Balti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current trends in technology suggest that the next generation of services and devices allows smarter customization and automatic context recognition. Computers learn the behavior of the users and can offer them customized services depending on the context, location, and preferences. One of the most important challenges in human-machine interaction is the proper understanding of human emotions by machines and automated systems. In the recent years, the progress made in machine learning and pattern recognition led to the development of algorithms that are able to learn the detection and identification of human emotions from experience. These algorithms use different modalities …

A Magical Country : Stories From Appalachia., James Eric Leary 1977- Dec 2014

A Magical Country : Stories From Appalachia., James Eric Leary 1977-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fairy tales and other forms of fantastic literature have fascinated children and adults for generations. The scholarship on these types of works indicate that many find their folkloric origins in oral storytelling, and those roots may be quite ancient. However, some of the earliest examples of recorded literature capture stories of magic and fantasy. The interplay between the oral and literary form remains a significant area of study and development for folk literature, and new artistic productions, termed variants in the scholarship, continue to appear frequently in contemporary American culture. The criticism and creative work presented here add to the …

“The Personal Has Become Political”: A Secondary Teacher’S Perceptions Of Her Body In The Classroom, Christine A. Mallozzi Dec 2014

“The Personal Has Become Political”: A Secondary Teacher’S Perceptions Of Her Body In The Classroom, Christine A. Mallozzi

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine how a secondary English teacher considered her body a personal and political matter within her professional settings. Discourse analysis of the participant’s narrative evidences that women teachers are pressured to present certain feminine and heterosexual bodies and present a similar personal life within their pedagogy. The risk in not following suit is being pushed out of the profession, a matter that can be problematic especially when a teacher undergoes personal changes counter to professional expectations. Teacher education responsibility in preparing teacher candidates for a variable professional trajectory is noted.
