Empowering Female English Language Learners To Pursue Computer Science Fields: A Practical 4-Hour Workshop For Beginning Teachers In High School, Osaro Althouse
Master's Projects and Capstones
Female English language learners (FELLs) are not taken under consideration when trying to attract new student populations to computer science fields. Frequently, females are studied cohesively without regard to their individual distinctions and challenges. This unique population has to overcome traditional gender perceptions and linguistic confronts when considering the field of computer science. This paper provides a practical four-hour workshop for novice teachers in high school that are eager to empower female English language learners (FELLs) that demonstrate potential or are interested in entering computer science fields. An overview of research within the last ten years is exhibited, which includes …

Master's Projects and Capstones
The purpose of this project was to identify strategies for ESL students in community colleges to develop their public speaking skills. Effective oral communication skills are commonly needed by employees in the workplace at all different levels. The project focused on three key areas: 1) ways to reduce the fear and anxiety associated with public speaking; 2) the role of small groups in planning and presenting oral presentations; and 3) the use of feedback and self-help strategies to improve public speaking skills. The project presented a handbook of strategies in each of these areas for students to use as a …

Exploring The Intersection Of Creative Practice Development And Second Language Acquisition In Adult Artists Professionally Connected To Seattle, Megan E. Deangelo
Exploring The Intersection Of Creative Practice Development And Second Language Acquisition In Adult Artists Professionally Connected To Seattle, Megan E. Deangelo
Master's Theses
Artists’ voices are disproportionately being excluded from international discourse because current English language education does not adequately serve this population of learners. This study was conducted as a catalyst for inquiry into the most effective ways artists acquire English so as to inform the development of curricula and programs to address their language learning needs. This study’s theoretical framework is created by Long’s (1981) interaction hypothesis and Skehan’s (1996) theory of task-based learning. The author proposes that artists’ English language learning experiences would be more fruitful if they were patterned after the interactions to which they are accustomed in their …

The overall goal of the internship experience was to assess the social determinants of …
Culturally Relevant Esl Pedagogy For California Community College Teacher Educators, Jeff Moran
Culturally Relevant Esl Pedagogy For California Community College Teacher Educators, Jeff Moran
Master's Projects and Capstones
Demographics in the US are changing rapidly. The current white majority will fall below 50% of the total population by 2060. This shift has already occurred in California, where Latino/as are the largest single ethnic group in the state. California community college student populations reflect this reality, as at least 65% are students of color and 25% are immigrants to the US. California community college ESL instructors are often involved in teaching immigrants and non-native English speakers of color. In contrast to the student body, California community college teacher demographics remain overwhelmingly homogenous, as over 82% of full and part-time …

Collaborative And Genre-Based Writing In The L2 Writing Classroom, Misty R. Lassiter
Master's Projects and Capstones
In the field of second language writing, L2 students should be empowered to express their personal voice in writing. Often, students are encouraged to adopt an academic voice, which discourages personal voice and often ignores prior knowledge. This field project intends to use collaborative writing and genre theory as a means of helping L2 writers strengthen their linguistic identity and empower them in the academy and beyond.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Since its advent in the 1970s, the notion of communicative competence (CC) has a tremendous influence on English language teaching, trends, theories, models, and paradigms. Since the 1970s, applied linguists, second language acquisition (SLA) researchers and educationalists have accepted the notion of communicative competence (CC) as the underpinning theory of second language acquisition, the objective of communicative language teaching approach (CLT), and as a measurement of language learner’s proficiency. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inclusion, teaching and testing of the features of the notion of communicative competence (CC) in teaching the oral skills to the English …

Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Many healthcare organizations are faced with the challenge of complying with an unfunded mandate to provide language services free of charge to individuals with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. One method of increasing efficiencies and reducing disparities for these vulnerable populations is to provide access to remote audio/video interpreters on a shared network. The Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) is a non-profit organization based in California that comprises more than forty member hospitals and offers service in twenty languages. To support the need for on-going professional development of HCIN’s interpreters, a front-end analysis …

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
With the growing number of diverse struggling readers in K-12 settings in the United States, it is critical to provide opportunities for students to enhance reading skills beyond classroom settings, for families to be involved in reading education, and for teachers to be better prepared to work with both students and their families. In this study, we described a community-based service learning project, the Village Project, that highlights the collaboration among the university, schools, and local community partners. Through reciprocal learning process, not only did struggling readers and families benefited from the program, preservice teacher candidates involved in the project …

“We Are Jamaicans. We Are Brothers”: History, Brotherhood, And Independence In Kerry Young’S Pao, Tzarina T. Prater
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Kerry Young’s first Novel, Pao, is written in the “voice” of a Chinese Jamaican, a voice that exhibits little if no syntactical or grammatical difference from those with whom he works and lives in the underworld of Chinatown in Kingston, Jamaica. Pao, our central protagonist, arrives to Jamaica in 1938, a time of tremendous social upheaval. The novel charts Pao’s growing political consciousness through his romantic relationships with: the “improper” black prostitute and madam, Gloria Campbell, who is the site of romantic love, and the “proper” Fay Wong, daughter of a grocery store chain owner and link to respectability. …
Towards “That Republic In Which Complexions Do Not Matter”: Derek Walcott’S Drums And Colours Fifty Years On, Harold N. Mcdermott
Towards “That Republic In Which Complexions Do Not Matter”: Derek Walcott’S Drums And Colours Fifty Years On, Harold N. Mcdermott
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Derek Walcott’s three hour pageant, Drums and Colours, commissioned to celebrate the inauguration of the West Indian Federation was first performed at the West Indian Festival, April 25 – May 1, 1958. Some feel that the nationalist and didactic thrust of this early drama blunted it value as art. It is, however, the opinion of this paper that this play provides one of the earliest conceptual maps for Walcott’s orchestration of key thematic occupations such as the quarrel with history, racial and cultural syncretism and the evolution of a distinctive West Indian theatre style. Fifty years after the breakup of …
Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz
Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
The Lonely Londoners still stands as the classic story about Caribbean migration to the UK in the twentieth century. The purpose of this article is to uncover the literary forms which underwrite its status as a 'classic.' Selvon's writing is representative of an early colonial modernism, developing a particular style of diasporic realism, in which the dialectic of reality/unreality stands as decisive. This partly derives from literary form, and partly from the collective experience of migrant time. Central to ths is mode of representation is the Creolization of the linguistic structure of the anglophone novel-form itself, evident not only in …
Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii
Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii
Open Access Theses
The mass media have recently brought to public light the new religious movement of Santa Muerte, or “Holy Death”. The depictions of Santa Muerte in news coverage, television and film have also swayed public perception through highly exoticized representations of the belief system, particularly in relation to violence and criminality. Separating sensationalization in the media from the actual practices of Santa Muerte serves to demonstrate that many devotees are non-violent practitioners. By using an ethnographic study of botanícas and documenting Santa Muerte related objects available to practitioners, this study nuances the multilayered components of this emergent religion.

Ellipsis Of Arguments: Its Acquisition And Theoretical Implications, Koichi Ohtaki
Ellipsis Of Arguments: Its Acquisition And Theoretical Implications, Koichi Ohtaki
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the acquisition of Argument Ellipsis (AE). In Chapter 2, I discuss two theoretical approaches to the cross-linguistic distribution/acquisition of AE, namely, the Scrambling Analysis (Oku 1998) and the Anti-agreement Analysis (Saito 2007), and show that neither can be maintained, based on the facts from cross-linguistic distribution of AE and learnability considerations. Then, I propose that the cross-linguistic distribution/acquisition of AE are best accounted for by the morphology of extended nominal projections such as case and number. More specifically, it is argued that only languages that exhibit non-fusional, agglutinating (case) morphology allow AE. This proposal correctly explains the …

Cognitive Neurosciene And Its Applications To Contemporary Acting Theory, Ryan Stiffelman
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
I personally believe that anyone can be a performer so long as they have the determination, dedication, and refuse to take no for an answer. There are all kinds of training out there designed to help turn hopeful wannabes into the “stars” that we know them as, however, not every “star” we see has had this kind of training. We often hear of young actors like Jennifer Lawrence hailed for their “natural talent”. Does this mean there’s some kind of birth-right, a specific natural inclination or ability that makes someone a potentially great actor from the start? I will refer …
