Association Between Parity And Rubella Seropositivity Among Older Reproductive-Age Women, Ibtisam Salim Awadh
Association Between Parity And Rubella Seropositivity Among Older Reproductive-Age Women, Ibtisam Salim Awadh
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Background: Rubella virus when it infects a non-pregnant adult or child usually causes a mild febrile rash illness. However, infection in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy causes miscarriages, stillbirths or foetal anomalies known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Factors associated with rubella immunity include age and parity. No studies have been done to isolate the association of parity independent of age. Objectives: To determine the seroprevalence of rubella IgG antibodies among nulliparous and multiparous women of the same age-group attending various clinics in Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Design: A cross-sectional study of women attending a tertiary hospital, Nairobi, …

Background: Global efforts to eradicate wild polioviruses (WPVs) continue to face challenges due to uninterrupted endemic WPV transmission in three countries and importation-related outbreaks into previously polio-free countries. We explore the potential role of including older children and adults in supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) to more rapidly increase population immunity and prevent or stop transmission. Methods: We use a differential equation-based dynamic poliovirus transmission model to analyze the epidemiological impact and vaccine resource implications of expanding target age groups in SIAs. We explore the use of older age groups in SIAs for three situations: alternative responses to the 2010 outbreak …

Tigecycline For Severe Clostridium Difficile Infection, Ashley Thomas, Farhan Khan, Nizam Uddin, Mark R. Wallace
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Limited data suggest that tigecycline may be of value in the treatment of Clostridiumdifficile infection. We reviewed our experience using tigecycline to treat severe c. difficile and compared outcomes to similarly ill patients who did not receive tigecycline. We found no difference between the groups. Further study is needed before tigecycline can be recommended for use in severe C. difficile infection.
Migrant Labor, Development, And Hiv In Botswana, William Kearns
Migrant Labor, Development, And Hiv In Botswana, William Kearns
HIM 1990-2015
At independence, Botswana was highly underdeveloped and reliant on external capital earned through migrant labor. This presented several challenges to development despite the discovery of diamonds shortly after independence. However, no challenge was greater than the HIV epidemic which came to infect one in four Batswana. This thesis discusses the historical factors which promoted the spread of the virus in the greater context of migrant labor and development within Botswana.

Simple Objective Detection Of Human Lyme Disease Infection Using Immuno-Pcr And A Single Recombinant Hybrid Antigen, Micah D. Halpern, Claudia R. Molins, Martin Schriefer, Mollie W. Jewett
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
A serology-based tiered approach has, to date, provided the most effective means of laboratory confirmation of clinically suspected cases of Lyme disease, but it lacks sensitivity in the early stages of disease and is often dependent on subjectively scored immunoblots. We recently demonstrated the use of immuno-PCR (iPCR) for detecting Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in patient serum samples that were positive for Lyme disease. To better understand the performance of the Lyme disease iPCR assay, the repeatability and variability of the background of the assay across samples from a healthy population (n = 36) were analyzed. Both of these parameters were …
Host And Bacterial Determinants Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization In Humans, Gowrishankar Muthukrishnan
Host And Bacterial Determinants Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization In Humans, Gowrishankar Muthukrishnan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus (SA), an opportunistic pathogen colonizing the anterior nares in approximately 30% of the human population, causes severe hospital-associated and community-acquired infections. SA nasal carriage plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections and SA eradication from the nares has proven to be effective in reducing endogenous infections. To understand SA nasal colonization and its relation with consequent disease, assessment of nasal carriage dynamics among a diverse population and determining factors responsible for SA nasal carriage have become major imperatives. Here, we report on an extensive longitudinal monitoring of SA nasal carriage in 109 healthy individuals over …
Antimicrobial Peptide Resistance And Immunomodulation By Hiv-1 Gp41, Matthew Wood
Antimicrobial Peptide Resistance And Immunomodulation By Hiv-1 Gp41, Matthew Wood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fusion inhibitors are a class of antiretroviral drugs used to prevent entry of HIV into host cells. Many of the fusion inhibitors being developed, including the drug enfuvirtide (ENF), are peptides designed to mimic, and thereby competitively inhibit, the viral fusion protein gp41. An exception to this is a class of cyclic, cationic, antimicrobial peptides known as θ-defensins, which are produced by many non-human primates and exhibit broad-spectrum antiviral and antibacterial activity. Currently, the θ-defensin analog RC-101 is being developed as a microbicide to prevent sexual transmission of HIV-1. Understanding potential RC-101 resistance, and how resistance to other fusion inhibitors …

In partnership with the World Diabetic Foundation, MoH has embarked on a countrywide program to build capacity of the health facilities to address NCDs. A needs assessment was developed and conducted in 13 regional referral hospitals, 27 general hospitals, and 14 health center IVs in Uganda to: (1) assess the capacity of health units to detect and manage noncommunicable diseases; (2) describe provider knowledge, attitudes, resources, and practices, and (3) identify areas of improvement and areas in …
Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen
Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen
Public Health Theses
Every organism requires certain resources that they cannot endogenously produce; one such dietary component, iron, is essential for many basic cellular functions and the host-immune response. By studying patterns of genetic diversity within the genes involved in immune-related iron transport we can achieve a greater understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms which drive these processes, including those underlying host-pathogen interactions.
This thesis describes further evidence of patterns indicative of positive selection within apical regions of the transferrin receptor complex (Tfr1), sites known to be involved in an evolutionary arms race with pathogens, within two rodent species endemic to Europe and Asia, …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Vaccines have been invaluable for global health, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs, while also raising the quality of human life. However, newly emerging infectious diseases (EID) and more well-established tropical disease pathogens present complex challenges to vaccine developers; in particular, neglected tropical diseases, which are most prevalent among the world's poorest, include many pathogens with large sizes, multistage life cycles and a variety of nonhuman vectors. EID such as MERS-CoV and H7N9 are highly pathogenic for humans. For many of these pathogens, while their genomes are available, immune correlates of protection are currently unknown. These complexities make developing vaccines …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States (U.S).1 Although early detection and treatment can reduce CRC-related morbidity and mortality, almost twothirds of patients are diagnosed with advanced stage disease indicating non-adherence to recommended screening guidelines.1 Indeed, less than half of individuals over 50 years of age get screened at recommended intervals.2 More specifically, lower rates of CRC screening exist among these groups: those identifying as being of Hispanic origin, the uninsured, disabled individuals, and women.3 In a 2011 report from the National Center on Health …
