Body Composition Changes Associated With Fasted Versus Non-Fasted Aerobic Exercise, Brad Jon Schoenfeld, Alan Albert Aragon, Colin D. Wilborn, James W. Krieger, Gul T. Sonmez
Publications and Research
It has been hypothesized that performing aerobic exercise after an overnight fast accelerates the loss of body fat. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in fat mass and fat-free mass following four weeks of volume-equated fasted versus fed aerobic exercise in young women adhering to a hypocaloric diet. Twenty healthy young female volunteers were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental groups: a fasted training (FASTED) group that performed exercise after an overnight fast (n = 10) or a post-prandial training (FED) group that consumed a meal prior to exercise (n = 10). Training consisted of 1 …

Medicaid Expansions & Public Health Spending: Cross-Subsidies, Complementarities, And Crowd-Out, Glen P. Mays
Medicaid Expansions & Public Health Spending: Cross-Subsidies, Complementarities, And Crowd-Out, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
In this paper we estimate the causal impact of state Medicaid enrollment expansions and expenditures on state and local resources allocated to other public health programs and services. Using a quasi-experimental design with instrumental variables estimation, we find evidence that increased Medicaid spending leads to reduced governmental spending on other public health services, consistent with a crowd-out effect. Over 10 years, such crowd-out has the potential to diminish the health status improvements generated through health insurance coverage expansions.

Little is known about the molecular pathways regulating poor differentiation and invasion of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In the present study, we aimed to determine the role of MDA-9/Syntenin, a metastasis associated molecule in HNSCC tumorigenesis. Elevated MDA-9/Syntenin expression was evident in 67% (54/81) primary HNSCC tumors (p=0.001-0.002) and 69% (9/13) pre-neoplastic tissues (p=0.02-0.03). MDA-9/Syntenin overexpression was associated with the stage (p=0.001), grade (p=0.001) and lymph node metastasis (p=0.0001). Silencing of MDA-9/Syntenin in 3 poorly differentiated HNSCC cell lines induced squamous epithelial cell differentiation, disrupted angiogenesis and reduced tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. We confirmed …

Background: Highly pathogenic influenza viruses cause high levels of morbidity, including excessive infiltration of leukocytes into the lungs, high viral loads and a cytokine storm. However, the details of how these pathological features unfold in severe influenza infections remain unclear. Accumulation of Gr1 + CD11b + myeloid cells has been observed in highly pathogenic influenza infections but it is not clear how and why they accumulate in the severely inflamed lung. In this study, we selected this cell population as a target to investigate the extreme inflammatory response during severe influenza infection.
Results: We established H1N1 IAV-infected mouse models using …

Extracellular Excystation And Development Of Cryptosporidium: Tracing The Fate Of Oocysts Within Pseudomonas Aquatic Biofilm Systems, Wan Koh, Andrew Thompson, Hann Edwards, Paul Monis, Peta L. Clode
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Background: Aquatic biofilms often serve as environmental reservoirs for microorganisms and provide them with a nutrient-rich growth environment under harsh conditions. With regard to Cryptosporidium, biofilms can serve as environmental reservoirs for oocysts, but may also support the growth of additional Cryptosporidium stages.
Results: Here we used confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and flow cytometry to identify and describe various Cryptosporidium developmental stages present within aquatic biofilm systems, and to directly compare these to stages produced in cell culture. We also show that Cryptosporidium has the ability to form a parasitophorous vacuole independently, in a host-free …

Bibliotherapy: An Approach To Treating Mental Illness In The Classroom, Erin M. Curry
Bibliotherapy: An Approach To Treating Mental Illness In The Classroom, Erin M. Curry
Senior Honors Theses
The prevalence of adolescent mental illness has increased at an alarming rate over the past two decades. Due to a lack of accessible mental health care and the stigmatization of mental illness, parents of children with these disorders are often reluctant to seek help. These children often resort to negative self-coping methods among which include substance abuse, violence, and suicide. These negative self-coping methods have a harmful, lasting impact on the individual as well as the surrounding community.
Bibliotherapy, which harnesses the meditative power of books, can teach helpful coping skills to students with mental illness. When effectively utilized in …

An Analysis Of Variables Influencing Parental Choices Of Treatments For Their Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly Frame
An Analysis Of Variables Influencing Parental Choices Of Treatments For Their Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberly Frame
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Autism is a diagnosis that often leaves families faced with more questions than answers. With a multitude of choices for possible treatments for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is important to understand parental perceptions of what they report as reasons for choosing ASD treatments for their child. The following research used a mixed methods approach in an effort to identify these reasons. This study used a survey that was available online through autism related communities. The quantitative analysis consisted of a Fischer’s Exact test. The results for these tests indicated that there were no correlations between the …

The Association Between Negative Self-Based Emotions And Social Support On Mental Health Functioning: The Consequences Of Intimate Partner Violence, Judiann Mcniff Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a type of trauma that can greatly affect health and social functioning. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are the two most common mental health problems that develop following IPV. IPV is also commonly associated with negative self-based emotions (shame and guilt) and lower levels of perceived social support. Few empirical studies have examined the unique impact that negative self-based emotions have on the maintenance of PTSD and depression, and the role that social support may have on these associations following IPV. This report will address the gaps in the current research …

The Formin Fmnl3 Assembles Plasma Membrane Protrusions That Participate In Cell–Cell Adhesion, Timothy J. Gauvin, Lorna E. Young, Henry N. Higgs
Dartmouth Scholarship
FMNL3 is a vertebrate-specific formin protein previously shown to play a role in angiogenesis and cell migration. Here we define the cellular localization of endogenous FMNL3, the dynamics of GFP-tagged FMNL3 during cell migration, and the effects of FMNL3 suppression in mammalian culture cells. The majority of FMNL3 localizes in a punctate pattern, with >95% of these puncta being indistinguishable from the plasma membrane by fluorescence microscopy. A small number of dynamic cytoplasmic FMNL3 patches also exist, which enrich near cell–cell contact sites and fuse with the plasma membrane at these sites. These cytoplasmic puncta appear to be part of …
