After several years of growing agricultural prosperity and record net farm income that peaked at $130 billion in 2013, average United States net farm income is forecast to drop more than 25 percent, to just under $96 billion for 2014 (United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service). The large drop from 2013 to 2014 after nearly a decade of strong growth in agricultural income presents a new challenge to agricultural producers, and an increased need to carefully manage risk on the farm or ranch. The drop is buffered in part by the underlying strength of the agricultural sector. …

Affordable Care Act Continues To Be Fluid, Marilyn R. Schlake, Carroll S. Welte Jan 2014

Affordable Care Act Continues To Be Fluid, Marilyn R. Schlake, Carroll S. Welte

Cornhusker Economics

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) went into effect in 2010 and continues to rollout significant sections of the law that affect individuals and businesses alike. Some ACA requirements are partially implemented and others are still undergoing scrutiny and policy changes. For instance, effective January 1, 2014 all individuals, including children, are required to have health insurance coverage or face a penalty for non-compliance. Although this law is now in effect, there have been administrative changes that allow for variances in the implementation of the law. Similarly, administrative regulations continue to be further defined that impact how businesses interact with employees …

Are Developing Countries Finally Developing?, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

In recent decades, there have been very substantial social, economic and political changes in many developing countries. While some noteworthy success stories, notably those of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have been widely reported, the prevailing image for the majority of poor countries is one of civil war, natural disasters, poverty, disease and very little progress in raising living standards. While many low- and middleincome countries continue to face serious challenges, a recent report from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) paints a more positive picture of their circumstances. The UNDP began publishing an annual report …

School Violence Perpetrators Speak: An Examination Of Perpetrators Views On School Violence Incidents, Gordon A. Crews Jan 2014

School Violence Perpetrators Speak: An Examination Of Perpetrators Views On School Violence Incidents, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In the last few decades researchers have attempted to determine correlates for school violence. While the number of extreme incidents of school violence remains relatively small, extreme incidents cause the most concern for parents, teachers, law enforcement, and educational administrators. In addition to the fear these types of events cause, they also bring about a great deal of debate regarding proper responses. Some feel that stringent zero tolerance policies are the answer, while others argue for more gun control in society. Some feel that increased counseling and service to young people is the answer, while others argue for the increased …

Beginning Farmer Numbers Grow In Nebraska, David J. Goeller Jan 2014

Beginning Farmer Numbers Grow In Nebraska, David J. Goeller

Cornhusker Economics

According to the 2012 USDA Census of Agriculture, NASS, a 30-year trend of declining numbers of farmers under 35 years of age appears to be, at least temporarily, reversing. As Figure 1 shows, Nebraska’s principal farm/ranch operators in the age group under 35 grew by 1,394 – from a total of 3,353 in 2007 to 4,747 in 2012. The previous 20-year history indicated overall losses in the number of beginning farmers from 12,609 in 1987 to a low of 3,353 in 2007. Nebraska’s total number of farm/ranch operators in the state grew as well, moving from 47,712 in 2007 to …

Future-Focused Entrepreneurship: Three Mega-Trends Influencing Business In Rural Areas, Connie I. Reimers-Hild, Marilyn R. Schlake

Cornhusker Economics

What does the future of business look like, taste like and feel like? While many companies are struggling to keep up with the rapid rate of change, future-focused entrepreneurs are recreating the business landscape blending technology with the human experience. It can be difficult to predict the future as the world continues to evolve at an increasingly rapid pace; however, entrepreneurs and business owners in rural places can use a future-focused leadership approach, which in-cludes examining megatrends, to plan for the future. Megatrends are global shifts that influence society, the economy and the environment. The purpose of this article is …

Putting Your Car Where Your Mouth Is: Diets And Carbon Emissions, Sarah Rehkamp, Azzeddine Azzam, Christopher Rand Gustafson

Cornhusker Economics

In an effort to broaden the focus of sustainability research from work on sustainable production that aims to influence farmer decisions when producing food, to research about sustainable consumption that aims to influence consumer decisions when buying food, we embarked on a research project that looks at environmental and health impacts of dietary choices. In this article, results from some initial work on the environmental impact are reported. Specifically, the energy efficiencies and consequent carbon emissions of the average United States, Japanese, Mediterranean, French and Nordic diets are compared. To put the results in perspective, the carbon emissions were converted …

Women In Agriculture: Making The Critical Difference, Cheryl Griffith Jan 2014

Women In Agriculture: Making The Critical Difference, Cheryl Griffith

Cornhusker Economics

Women in Agriculture: Making the Critical Difference was the theme for the 29th Nebraska Women in Agriculture (WIA) Conference, February 20-21, 2014 in Kearney, Nebraska. Nearly 350 Nebraska producers attended the conference which focused on educating, advocating and communicating within the agriculture industry. Drought, untimely snowstorms, volatile markets, farm policy indecisions and health care changes brought much uncertainty to Nebraska farmers and ranchers in the past year. One decision can be the critical difference between profit or loss. Many workshops focused on helping p r oducers decide their own comfortable level of risk.
