Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii
Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii
Open Access Theses
The mass media have recently brought to public light the new religious movement of Santa Muerte, or “Holy Death”. The depictions of Santa Muerte in news coverage, television and film have also swayed public perception through highly exoticized representations of the belief system, particularly in relation to violence and criminality. Separating sensationalization in the media from the actual practices of Santa Muerte serves to demonstrate that many devotees are non-violent practitioners. By using an ethnographic study of botanícas and documenting Santa Muerte related objects available to practitioners, this study nuances the multilayered components of this emergent religion.

Postoperative Management And Core Stabilization Interventions For A Semi-Pro Football Athlete Following Lumbar Discectomy: A Case Report, Isaiah Iaea
Case Report Papers
Although there is evidence to support a high success rate to return to work in the general population and to sports play in athletes following discectomy, less is known regarding the interventions that played a role in their return. The following case describes the interventions and management of a recreational football player following discectomy. Case description: The patient was a self-described highly active 24-year-old male post discectomy. The patient had pain, poor body mechanics, gait abnormalities, range of motion deficits, and strength deficits of his low back and lower extremities. Physical therapy interventions included soft tissue mobilization, stretching, exercise, and …

Implementing Pharmacist-Led Osteoporosis Testing And Education In Community Pharmacies, Chukwuemezie F. Chimezie, Nancy Williams, Henry Kinnard
Student Research
□ Osteoporosis is a common disease of the bones that is characterized by a decrease in bone density and bone strength, resulting in bone fragility.
□ In the United States, approximately 44 million people have low bone density, 10 million of whom have osteoporosis and 34 million with osteopenia. This equates to about 55% of the U.S. population aged 50 years and older. The number of people with osteoporosis-related fractures is predicted to increase dramatically due to the aging population of the country.
□ Osteoporotic bone fractures are responsible for pain, decreased quality of life, lost workdays, and disability.

A Community That Dances Never Dies: An Ethnographic Study On People Of The African Diaspora Within The African Dance And Drum Community In Chicago, Ifetayo Kitwana
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This ethnographic study explored the possible innate healing properties and therapeutic aspects of West African dance within a public community setting for people of the African diaspora, specifically the African dance and drum community of Chicago. The study was conducted to identify a possible means for preventative work, explore the unique mental health needs of African Americans and expand the understanding of dance/movement therapy concepts outside of the clinical setting. The study revealed the usefulness of West African dance as a means to connect African Americans to their heritage of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. A narrative analysis of informal …

Test-Retest Reliability And Minimal Detectable Change Of The Modified Fresno Test Of Evidence Based Practice In Dpt Students, Erin Pike, Lisa Gerhardt
Research Report Posters
Poster presenting a research study whose purpose was to determine the test-retest reliability and MDC of the MFT in first, second, and third year DPT students, and to compare the mean total score of the MFT among the three student groups. Using a simple random sample, 21 students were recruited from each of the three UNE DPT classes. The participants completed the MFT twice, separated by 14 days, in a UNE classroom. Students in the third year class completed the validated 13-item MFT and, due to a photocopying error, students in the first and second year class completed an 11-item …

Postoperative Management And Core Stabilization Interventions For A Semi-Pro Football Athlete Following Lumbar Discectomy: A Case Report, Isaiah Iaea
Case Report Posters
Background: Many cases of low back pain (LBP) are idiopathic in nature, however, LBP in result of a herniated intervertebral disc exerting pressure on the nerve root may require lumbar discectomy to relieve sciatica and radiating pain. Although there is evidence to support successful return to work in the general population and return to sports in professional athletes, less is known regarding the interventions that played a role in their return. Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to describe the physical therapy management and core stabilization interventions for a semi-pro football athlete following lumbar discectomy who sustained a …

Creating An Inclusive School Climate For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Students, Tosha Farrell
Creating An Inclusive School Climate For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Students, Tosha Farrell
Counselor Education Capstones
In a study completed in 2009, only 88 out of 400 school districts surveyed showed support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students (Rienzo, Button, Sheu, & Li, 2006). Some of this may be due to a lack of support by society, family, and friends, or a lack of advocacy in school for support services for the LGBT population. There are many ways in which a school can contribute to supporting LGBT youth. These ways include, but are not limited to, education about sexual orientation for students, faculty, parents, school board members, and the community, support groups for LGBT …

Re-Demonstration Without Remediation--A Missed Opportunity? A National Survey Of Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors, Mary R. Hawthorne, Katherine C. Chretien, Dario Torre, Shobhina G. Chheda
Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: Many different components factor into the final grade assigned for the internal medicine clerkship. Failure of one or more of these requires consideration of remedial measures.
Purpose: To determine which assessment components are used to assign students a passing grade for the clerkship and what remediation measures are required when students do not pass a component.
Methods: A national cross-sectional survey of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) institutional members was conducted in April 2011. The survey included sections on remediation, grading practices, and demographics. The authors analyzed responses using descriptive and comparative statistics.

IGBB Publications
Fathead minnow and zebrafish are among the most intensively studied fish species in environmental toxicogenomics. To aid the assessment and interpretation of subtle transcriptomic effects from treatment conditions of interest, better characterization and understanding are needed for natural variation in gene expression among fish individuals from lab cultures. Leveraging the transcriptomics data from a number of our toxicogenomics studies conducted over the years, we conducted a meta-analysis of nearly 600 microarrays generated from the ovary tissue of untreated, reproductively mature fathead minnow and zebrafish samples. As expected, there was considerable batch-to-batch transcriptomic variation; this "batch-effect" appeared to differentially impact subsets …
Network Flexibility For Recourse Considerations In Bi-Criteria Facility Location, Jeremy North
Network Flexibility For Recourse Considerations In Bi-Criteria Facility Location, Jeremy North
Dissertations
What is the best set of facility location decisions for the establishment of a logistics network when it is uncertain how a company’s distribution strategy will evolve? What is the best configuration of a distribution network that will most likely have to be altered in the future? Today’s business environment is turbulent, and operating conditions for firms can take a turn for the worse at any moment. This fact can and often does influence companies to occasionally expand or contract their distribution networks. For most companies operating in this chaotic business environment, there is a continuous struggle between staying cost …

New Population Projections Reflect Slower Growth And Increasing Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
New Population Projections Reflect Slower Growth And Increasing Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
Two important demographic trends are reflected in newly released Census Bureau projections. The pace of U.S. population growth is slowing, and the population continues to become more diverse. These trends reflect distinctly different demographic trajectories among whites and minorities driven by the interaction of several key demographic forces. This will produce a rich tapestry of demographic chan
