Civil Unrest And Collective Violence In France: A Historical Comparative Analysis, Kenneth Arsenault
Civil Unrest And Collective Violence In France: A Historical Comparative Analysis, Kenneth Arsenault
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Civil unrest as a precursor for collective violence to erupt is analyzed using historic events in France. The theoretical background for collective violence is outlined, along with a discussion of the origin of crowd behavior by Le Bon. By analyzing historic events in a single country, the variable of differing cultural contexts is eliminated. Four cases of events that led to collective violence ranging across time from the late 18th century to the late 20th century are analyzed in detail to determine the causal mechanisms that led the crowds to become violent. A comparison of the cases leads to a …

Composite Index As A Way Of Measuring Economic Distress In Nebraska, Cornelius S. Okumu
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
The Nebraska state department of economic development, just like any other state’s department of economic development in the United States receives funding for economic development programs. These programs are mostly geared toward revitalizing economic situations of villages, cities or counties that are under economic distress. The purpose of this paper is to assess how the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (NEDED) currently measure distress in Nebraska Counties, and develop composite distress indexes that might improve the measure, interpretation and use of Economic distress index to help in their allocation of Economic development resources to Nebraska counties.

Looking Again At James Currie's Inventory: The Other Side Of The Burns Correspondence, Patrick G. Scott, Joseph C. Durant
Faculty Publications
This article, based on editorial work in progress for the forthcoming Letters Addressed to Robert Burns, 1779-1796, briefly describes the larger project and then explores one of the major project sources, James Currie's inventory of the letters in Burns's possession at the time of his death, to show the range of his correspondence and how some of the brief inventory letter-summaries can be expanded by research. The article is based on a videorecorded presentation for Project Symposium no. 3: "Textual Landmarks," for the AHRC-funded project Editing Robert Burns for the 21st Century, Center for Robert Burns Studies, University of …

Food Purchasing Habits Of Participants In The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap) Among Shelby County, Tennessee Residents, Michelle Ann Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a government entitlement program that provides monetary assistance for participants to consistently acquire adequate food. Many unanswered questions remain regarding nutrition quality of SNAP purchases. Eighty-four SNAP participants were surveyed at food pantries throughout Shelby County, TN to obtain a descriptive analysis of participant purchasing habits. The majority of households received $150 or less per month in benefits, which were spent most frequently at convenience stores (n=42) and in bakeries/delis (n=44). 77% (n=65) of participants reported experiencing times while utilizing SNAP benefits where there was not enough food to feed his/her family. Meat …
Distribution, Growth, And Impact Of The Coral-Excavating Sponge, Cliona Delitrix, On The Stony Coral Communities Offshore Southeast Florida, Ari Halperin
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Bioerosion is a major process that affects the carbonate balance on coral reefs, and excavating sponges from the genus Cliona are some of the most important bioeroders on Caribbean reefs. The orange boring sponge, Cliona delitrix, is an abundant excavating sponge offshore southeast Florida that frequently colonizes dead portions of live stony corals, killing live coral tissue as it grows. With the recent decline in coral cover attributed to combined environmental and anthropogenic stressors, the increasing abundance of excavating sponges poses yet another threat to the persistence of Caribbean coral reefs.
In the first part of this study, I …

The Objective Vs. The Perceived Environment: What Matters For Active Travel, Liang Ma
The Objective Vs. The Perceived Environment: What Matters For Active Travel, Liang Ma
Dissertations and Theses
This study aims to explore the relationship between the objective (actual) environment and people's perceptions of the environment, and their relative effects on active travel behavior, particularly bicycling behavior. This is an important research gap in the current literature linking the built environment and active travel. Better understanding this relationship will help to explore the mechanism underlying the built environment- behavior relationship and identify potential interventions to promote active travel.
Relying on the data from Portland, OR, this study investigated the following four research questions: (1) How does the objectively measured environment correspond to the perceived environment? And what factors …
Understanding Sexual Assault Survivors' Willingness To Participate In The Judicial System, Mildred Ann Davis
Understanding Sexual Assault Survivors' Willingness To Participate In The Judicial System, Mildred Ann Davis
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examined the relationship between support services for adult survivors of sexual assault and judicial outcomes. Specifically, this study explored survivors' willingness to participate in the judicial process. Although "victim unwilling to participate" is the primary reason given by the police for cases not progressing to prosecution, we know little about most aspects of survivors' willingness to participate in the judicial process, especially beyond initial reporting of the assault. The steps to prosecution are dependent on one another yet a survivor's willingness to participate in these steps is a fluid process. The primary research question explored was Are there …
The Role Of Mate Preference And Personality On Reproductive Performance In An Ex-Situ Conservation Breeding Program For The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), Meghan S. Martin
The Role Of Mate Preference And Personality On Reproductive Performance In An Ex-Situ Conservation Breeding Program For The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), Meghan S. Martin
Dissertations and Theses
Successful captive-breeding and re-introduction programs must have the ability to breed a surplus of genetically suitable animals for release into the wild. Unfortunately, many individuals in captive breeding programs often do not reproduce even when they are apparently healthy and presented with genetically appropriate mates. Mate choice can affect multiple parameters of reproductive sperformance, including mating success, offspring production, survival, and fecundity. We investigated the role of mate preference and personality on the reproductive performance of male and female giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) as measured by intromission success and litter production. We conducted these studies on giant pandas at the …

Addressing Gaps In Nursing Home Emergency Preparedness, J Rush Pierce Jr, Laura Banks, Theresa A. West
Hospital Medicine
Background: Previous studies have identified significant gaps in nursing home emergency preparedness. Few of these studies have specifically surveyed nursing homes about activities that would be helpful in improving preparedness. Methods: In 2012, we mailed to 134 nursing homes in West Texas and New Mexico a survey about the facility, facility preparedness, and types of assistance would be helpful in improving preparedness for their facility. We performed standard statistical analysis on returned surveys and compared facilities in rural communities to those in urban communities. Results: 37/134 (28%) of facilities returned the survey. 21/36 (65%) of surveys were from facilities in …

Examining The Symptom-Level Specificity Of Negative Problem Orientation In A Clinical Sample, Thomas A. Fergus, David P. Valentiner, Kevin D. Wu, Patrick B. Mcgrath
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Given the equivocal state of the literature as to the symptom-level specificity of the cognitive variable labeled negative problem orientation (NPO), we targeted NPO–symptom relations. A clinical sample (N = 132) of adults diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, mood disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder completed self-reports of NPO and symptom types (worry, depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic, and social anxiety). Symptom-level specificity was examined using a combination of zero-order and regression analyses that controlled for the other assessed symptoms. Results were that NPO shared small to moderate correlations with the symptoms. Regression results indicated that NPO only shared unique associations with worry, depression, …

Risk Environment In Northern Sea Route Transportation Projects, Lena Y. Petrova
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The need for defining the risk environment in the Arctic strengthens as changing ice conditions and economic opportunities drive the demand for expanding traffic volumes in Russia’s Northern Sea Route (NSR). An international commercial shipping route, the NSR is proven to cut transit time up to forty percent compared to the overflowing Suez Canal when traveling from ports in Western Europe to Southeast Asia. The NSR offers a challenging yet attractive project landscape since its opening to global logistics companies in the 1990s. A total of 27 international shipments were made and 1.35 million tons of cargo were moved in …

Impact Of Leaflet Material On Transcatheter Aortic Valve Function, Andrea Mandragouras
Impact Of Leaflet Material On Transcatheter Aortic Valve Function, Andrea Mandragouras
Master's Theses
There has been a huge push in the medical device industry to make the current transcatheter aortic valves (TAV) smaller. This would shift some patients who are receiving transapical access site which is in the heart to the transfemoral site which is in the leg. With a decreased hospital stay, and higher endpoint safety transfemoral is typically preferred. Some patients are forced to receive the transapical approach because of the small arteries in their leg and the size of the device. The current TAVs leaflets are made from thick porcine or bovine pericardium which causes the bulkiness in the device. …
