An Investigation Of Dialect Variation And Spelling: First Graders' Representation Of Final Consonant Clusters, Maegan Rebekah Inzer

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate first grade Mainstream American English (MAE) and African American English (AAE) speakers' representation of final consonant clusters in Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVCC) words in spelling tasks with three stimulus conditions: real words- child names the picture, real words- examiner names the picture, and nonwords- examiner names the picture. No significant differences were identified between the groups in spelling CVC words. When spelling CVCC words, the AAE group had significantly more dialect responses (spelling CVCC words as CVC words) compared to the MAE group across all tasks. AAE speakers gave fewer AAE spellings as the …

Ten Pop Culture Modules For The Middle School Exploratory Spanish Classroom, Amy K. Gramlich

Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-first century adolescents desire to learn through methods and topics which are relevant to their contemporary experiences. Middle school students are motivated by technology and popular culture, and they desire high interest activities in the classroom. Foreign language educators have a plethora of authentic resources that represent target language popular culture available for the modern-day classroom such as YouTube videos, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Voice, online magazines, and student cell phones to help meet these needs. However, many educators feel limited and rushed in finding the time to prepare for culture lessons. The intent behind this thesis is to create pop …

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie Nov 2014

Executive Functioning In The Context Of Urban Poverty: An Examination Of Poverty Related Stress And Its Relationships To Academic Achievement, Jacquelyn L. Doxie

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Living in urban poverty has been linked to numerous negative conditions that disproportionately expose low-income urban youth and their families to severe and chronic stressors (Collins et al., 2010; DeNavas-Walt, Proctor, and Smith, 2012; Sznitman, Reisel, and Romer, 2011). Research has consistently shown a strong relationship between these stressors and numerous negative outcomes that can impact an adolescent emotionally, behaviorally, and academically (Conger et al., 2002). This dissertation is focused on the area of academic achievement, an outcome consistently found to be negatively impacted by poverty (Rouse and Fantuzzo, 2009). Based on Bronfenbrenner’s model of bio-ecological human development (Bronfenbrenner and …

‘Once A Local Surfer, Always A Local Surfer’: Local Surfing Careers In A Southwest English Village, Ef Beaumont, D Brown Nov 2014

‘Once A Local Surfer, Always A Local Surfer’: Local Surfing Careers In A Southwest English Village, Ef Beaumont, D Brown

Plymouth Business School

This article reports on findings from an ethnographic study (2008–09) conducted in a village with a significant population of local surfers in Cornwall (Southwest England). Stimulated by Goffman's (1961) interpretation of the concept of career and elaborated by the work of Stebbins (1970) on “subjective career,” Stebbins's (1982) framework of “serious leisure” and “serious leisure career” (Stebbins, 2005), we identify moments from local surfer careers lived in this community setting. We suggest that similar to findings from other subcultural studies on sports careers the local surfing career in this context contains shared experiential stages: the nurtured stage, the possible competitive …

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen Nov 2014

Behavioral Measures Of Audibility As Indicators Of Hearing Aid Benefit, Bethany Lauren Burkeen

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of quantifying hearing aid benefit by means of the Audibility Index. The Audibility Index (AI) is defined as the amount of the audible speech spectrum available to a listener. Twenty-one participants with bilateral sensorineural hearing losses, each required to wear bilateral hearing aids, were recruited for this study. Utilizing FM tone stimuli, audiometric thresholds were established for each individual conventionally under earphones for the right and left ears, unaided in a sound field, and aided in a sound field. The thresholds were placed on a count-the-dot audiogram in order to calculate AIs for each individual. …

Street Level Food Networks: Understanding Ethnic Food Cart Supply Chains In Eastern Portland, Or, Alexander G. Novie Nov 2014

Street Level Food Networks: Understanding Ethnic Food Cart Supply Chains In Eastern Portland, Or, Alexander G. Novie

Dissertations and Theses

Portland, OR, is the site of a unique urban food cart phenomenon that provides opportunities for small business ownership and access points for culturally specific food for the city's foreign-born and minority populations. Known as a "foodie haven," Portland also has an active sustainable food movement with engaged citizens and support from city and regional policies aimed at significantly increasing the consumption of local food. To date, there have been no in-depth studies on the sourcing habits of Portland food cart owners and whether or not these street-level actors are involved in the area's local alternative food movements (AFNs). The …

All But Thesis: On Dealing With Academic Anxiety At The Graduate Level, Angela Schnabel Nov 2014

All But Thesis: On Dealing With Academic Anxiety At The Graduate Level, Angela Schnabel

Theses and Dissertations

"All But Thesis: On Dealing with Academic Anxiety at the Graduate Level" is a marriage of autoethnography and memoir framed in principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that recounts my struggle with academic anxiety at the graduate level. I found no other first-person narratives on this topic, so my thesis sets out to bridge that gap. Psychology and the library, educational, and informational sciences fields discuss perfectionism and procrastination as causes of academic anxiety, so here I explore the roles those concepts play in my own anxiety issues. A reflexive journal quantified my progress throughout the semester, it rates my anxiety …

The Emerging Roles Of Gprc5a In Diseases., Honglei Zhou, Isidore Rigoutsos Nov 2014

The Emerging Roles Of Gprc5a In Diseases., Honglei Zhou, Isidore Rigoutsos

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers

The 'Retinoic Acid-Inducible G-protein-coupled receptors' or RAIG are a group comprising the four orphan receptors GPRC5A, GPRC5B, GPRC5C and GPRC5D. As the name implies, their expression is induced by retinoic acid but beyond that very little is known about their function. In recent years, one member, GPRC5A, has been receiving increasing attention as it was shown to play important roles in human cancers. As a matter of fact, dysregulation of GPRC5A has been associated with several cancers including lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Here we review the current state of knowledge about the heterogeneity and evolution …

Mesoscale Convective System Surface Pressure Anomalies Responsible For Meteotsunamis Along The U.S. East Coast On June 13th, 2013, Christina A. Wertman, Richard M. Yablonsky, Yang Shen, John Merrill, Christopher R. Kincaid, Robert A. Pockalny

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Two destructive high-frequency sea level oscillation events occurred on June 13th, 2013 along the U.S. East Coast. Seafloor processes can be dismissed as the sources, as no concurrent offshore earthquakes or landslides were detected. Here, we present evidence that these tsunami-like events were generated by atmospheric mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) propagating from inland to offshore. The USArray Transportable Array inland and NOAA tide gauges along the coast recorded the pressure anomalies associated with the MCSs. Once offshore, the pressure anomalies generated shallow water waves, which were amplified by the resonance between the water column and atmospheric forcing. Analysis of the …

Ten Integrated Performance Assessments For A Novel-Level College French Class, Nanette Ada Zobkov Nov 2014

Ten Integrated Performance Assessments For A Novel-Level College French Class, Nanette Ada Zobkov

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the need for standards-based assessment, researchers created the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA), which connects assessment and instruction, testing learners within an authentic context across three communicative modes. It is a better measure of proficiency, provides feedback to learners, positively impacts instruction, and improves learners' attitudes toward assessment. There are many benefits of the IPA, but many instructors do not know how to create and implement them in the classroom. There is a lack of quality IPA examples available to French teachers, and existing IPAs are for high proficiency levels. The author believes that if teachers had access …

Liberal And Conservative Newspaper Reporting Leading Up To The War With Iraq, Shirley E. Pence Nov 2014

Liberal And Conservative Newspaper Reporting Leading Up To The War With Iraq, Shirley E. Pence

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to determine whether there was a difference in the news reports by liberal and conservative newspapers up to the 2003 war with Iraq. When no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, the news media was criticized for its failure to challenge the president's "rush to war." Through examination of two liberal and two conservative newspapers' editorials and front page news articles in four periods following the September 11 terrorist attacks, the liberal New York Times and the Washington Post were found to be less supportive than the conservaive Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times …

The Gathings Committee: Censorship, Society, And Paperback Literature In The 1950s, Jim Stallings Nov 2014

The Gathings Committee: Censorship, Society, And Paperback Literature In The 1950s, Jim Stallings

Theses and Dissertations

In 1952, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn appointed Arkansas Democrat Representative Ezekiel Candler "Took" Gathings to lead a select committee and investigate the potential effect of allegedly obscene literature on the morals of American society. The House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials, informally known as the Gathings Committee, issued a majority report in 1953. It claimed the distribution of obscene literature was a pervasive problem, and recommended the federal government censor the distribution of material deemed inappropriate. Ultimately, the House of Representatives discarded the committee's recommendations. However, questions of whether or not literature could affect social morals, or …
