The Effectiveness Of The Boys Town Educational Model As A School Wide Intervention, Natalie Hahn-Mauck Jan 2014

The Effectiveness Of The Boys Town Educational Model As A School Wide Intervention, Natalie Hahn-Mauck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There are many school‐based programs available that claim to provide effective techniques to decrease disruptive behaviors and increase academic engagement. One widely used program is the Boys Town Education Model (BTEM). The problem with widespread use of BTEM is the lack of empirical evidence to support the effectiveness of the program as a systems wide intervention in general education settings. The purpose of this research proposal is to examine the effectiveness of BTEM in comparison to research‐based classroom management techniques, such as reinforcement and correction of behaviors, teaching classroom expectations, social skills instruction, and token economies. Six schools will be …

Swpbis, Behavior Patterns, And The Discipline Gap, Sean Christopher Austin Jan 2014

Swpbis, Behavior Patterns, And The Discipline Gap, Sean Christopher Austin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The goal of this study was to examine to what extent the discipline gap is present in a school implementing school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports (SWPBIS) and to examine whether students of different ethnicities are reported disproportionately for different types of behavior. Eight years of reported problem behavior (RPB) data from one elementary school were collected and analyzed both descriptively and statistically. In order to reflect the population proportionately, the presence of the discipline gap was examined using the average number of RPBs per student per year by ethnicity. Results indicate that there was no statistically significant difference between …

Population Structure, Size, And The Thermal Ecology Of Iowa Wood Turtles (Glyptemys Insculpta): A Comparison Between Suburban And Rural Populations, Samuel Wesley Berg Jan 2014

Population Structure, Size, And The Thermal Ecology Of Iowa Wood Turtles (Glyptemys Insculpta): A Comparison Between Suburban And Rural Populations, Samuel Wesley Berg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Population structure, population size, and the thermal ecology of wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) was studied in a suburban population in Black Hawk County (BHC) and compared to a rural population in Butler County (BC), Iowa. In a suburban population of 35 wood turtles, 32 (91.4%) were adults distributed in a 1:1 sex ratio [16 (45.7%) females and 16 (45.7%) males], and 3 (8.6%) were juveniles. In the rural population, 60 (98.4% of the total population) adult turtles were distributed in a 3:2 sex ratio [36 (59.0%) females and 24 (39.3%) males], and one (1.7%) juvenile was located. Population structure was …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Professional Development Program For Secondary Physics Teachers, Meghan Reynolds Jan 2014

Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Professional Development Program For Secondary Physics Teachers, Meghan Reynolds

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

National studies have exposed a shortage of highly-qualified high school physics teachers, with over 25% of physics teaching vacancies in Iowa being very difficult to fill or unable to be filled. In an effort to improve the nation’s education system, there have been broad changes in the framework of what constitutes high-quality teaching which supports a trend away from traditional, lecture-based teaching methods and towards interactive, student-centered methods. This study analyzed the impact of a professional development program that aimed to prepare more high-quality high school physics teachers by building physics content knowledge through the use of reformed teaching techniques …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Using An Ipad-Based Video Modeling Plus Video Prompting Package To Teach Conversation Skills To Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Mohammed M. Alzayer Jan 2014

Examining The Effectiveness Of Using An Ipad-Based Video Modeling Plus Video Prompting Package To Teach Conversation Skills To Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Mohammed M. Alzayer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an iPad-based video modeling plus video prompting package to teach conversational skills to students with autism. A single subject multiple baseline across four children with autism design was used. Two typically developing children were involved to fulfill the video modeling and video prompting roles. Videos were created of peer models answering questions and responding to comments in complete sentences. On the videos, the questions and comments were asked by actual teachers and the peer models answered and provided comments in complete sentences in order for the target children to …

Relationship Between Weight-Related Teasing And Levels Of Physical Activity, Piroska Boros Jan 2014

Relationship Between Weight-Related Teasing And Levels Of Physical Activity, Piroska Boros

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Weight-related teasing is associated with predictors of physical activity such as self-efficacy and social support. It is possible that more frequent weight-related teasing is directly associated with engagement in physical activity.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between weight-related teasing and engagement in physical activity, body composition and physical activity enjoyment among female college students. This study also investigated the possibility that physical activity enjoyment mediates the relationship between weight-related teasing and physical activity.

Fifty-seven female college students participated in the study. Participants completed the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale to measure how much they enjoyed participating …

The Phylogenetics And Systematics Of Physaria Kingii (Brassicaceae), Jamie Minnaert-Grote Jan 2014

The Phylogenetics And Systematics Of Physaria Kingii (Brassicaceae), Jamie Minnaert-Grote

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The subspecies of Physaria kingii (S. Watson) O’Kane and Al-Shehbaz (Brassicaceae) have historically been a difficult group to delimit taxonomically based on morphology, geography, and ecology. The taxa have been moved between genera as well among varieties, subspecies, and full species many times over. This study addressed the systematics relationships of the subspecies of P. kingii using a combination of molecular (both nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences), morphological, geographical, and ecological data. Three non-coding DNA regions were chosen: the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the chloroplast rps intron and the chloroplast ndhC-trnV intergenic spacer. Eighty-seven …

Does Child Code-Switching Demonstrate Communicative Competence?: A Comparison Of Simultaneous And Sequential Bilinguals, Katherine Christoffersen Jan 2014

Does Child Code-Switching Demonstrate Communicative Competence?: A Comparison Of Simultaneous And Sequential Bilinguals, Katherine Christoffersen

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Over the past four decades, code-switching (CS) has been established as a mark of high linguistic competence among adult simultaneous (2L1) bilinguals, those who acquired two ‘first’ languages before age three. The status of CS among second language (L2) learners, who learned one language after age three, is much less clear; children represent an especially understudied population in this line of inquiry. This study aims to address this research gap and presents a comparison of child 2L1 bilinguals and child L2 learners in kindergarten, first and second grade of a Spanish immersion program. Twelve hours of recorded spontaneous classroom speech …
