Antibacterial Gene Transfer Across The Tree Of Life, Jason A. Metcalf, Lisa J. Funkhouser-Jones, Kristen A. Brileya, Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Seth R. Bordenstein Nov 2014

Antibacterial Gene Transfer Across The Tree Of Life, Jason A. Metcalf, Lisa J. Funkhouser-Jones, Kristen A. Brileya, Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Seth R. Bordenstein

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Though horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is widespread, genes and taxa experience biased rates of transferability. Curiously, independent transmission of homologous DNA to archaea, bacteria, eukaryotes, and viruses is extremely rare and often defies ecological and functional explanations. Here, we demonstrate that a bacterial lysozyme family integrated independently in all domains of life across diverse environments, generating the only glycosyl hydrolase 25 muramidases in plants and archaea. During coculture of a hydrothermal vent archaeon with a bacterial competitor, muramidase transcription is upregulated. Moreover, recombinant lysozyme exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial action in a dose-dependent manner. Similar to bacterial transfer of antibiotic resistance genes, …

The Cross Cultural Examination Of A Brief Autism Diagnostic Interview (Adi-R) In Korea And The United States, Elizabeth Lally Daley Nov 2014

The Cross Cultural Examination Of A Brief Autism Diagnostic Interview (Adi-R) In Korea And The United States, Elizabeth Lally Daley

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States; as many as 1 in 88 individuals have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010). Although scientists are working on understanding how many people in the population have autism, there is a limited amount of focus on the identification of any cultural factors that may influence people’s understanding about autism, attitudes about autism, and reporting of symptoms. The accepted methods for diagnosing autism are the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). This study seeks to …

Is Modernity A Mirror Or A "Flower"?: On The "Vision" Of Rojas's The Naked Gaze: Reflections On Chinese Modernity, Wei Lin Nov 2014

Is Modernity A Mirror Or A "Flower"?: On The "Vision" Of Rojas's The Naked Gaze: Reflections On Chinese Modernity, Wei Lin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The essential issue of visual culture is to position the self and the world through vision. Rojas's subject of research is the literature and arts in the late Qing Dynasty to modern period, and he attempts a visual interpretation of Chinese modernity through constructing a three-dimensional visual system, in which the self-mirroring subjects, audience and object co-exist. He maintains that the body, as a visual object, is both a mirror-like screen, and the unreal image in the mirror, which provides the subject of visual desire as the other with a concrete channel of presentation. Through the interrelationship between time and …

On The Abstraction Of Modern Art And The End Of Art, Xiuyin Peng, Zhendong Wu Nov 2014

On The Abstraction Of Modern Art And The End Of Art, Xiuyin Peng, Zhendong Wu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper aims at analyzing the abstraction as a method in the creative process of modern art. The paper argues that the reasons for abstraction may be attributed to two aspects. One aspect is the heteronomy from social modernity, and the other is the autonomy of the development of art itself. Since the birth of modern art, the meta-narrative of abstraction has been overdrawn through repeated transformations, which results in the claim of "the end of art." However, from a perspective not limited to the idea of progressiveness of art, art has not reached its end yet. Instead, art is …

The current study examined the effects of telecommuting intensity – the amount of scheduled time that employees spend doing work away from the central work location – on employee outcomes. Results of this study provided insight into how telecommuting intensity relates to turnover intent and supervisor-rated performance through mediating mechanisms of work-life conflict, professional isolation, and Leader-Member Exchange. An online survey instrument was created, and an invitation to participate was sent by e-mail to telecommuters. Each participant was asked to provide an email address for his or her direct supervisor. The supervisor was asked to complete a shortened version of …

Constructing An "Appropriate" Education In Florida Special Education Due Process Final Orders, Michelle Henry Nov 2014

Constructing An "Appropriate" Education In Florida Special Education Due Process Final Orders, Michelle Henry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how Florida administrative law judges (ALJs) constructed an appropriate education for students with disabilities in their final orders. This study utilized the Johnstone Method as a heuristic in analyzing the data. It examined the construction of an appropriate education from the implementation of PL 94-142 up to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Board of Education v. Rowley (1975-1978), after the Rowley decision (1983-1986), and after the reauthorization of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act in 2004 (2004-2007). Each time period was examined individually and then the results were compared. The data sources included six purposively sampled …

Evaluation Of Energy Policy Instruments For The Adoption Of Renewable Energy: Case Of Wind Energy In The Pacific Northwest U.S., Remal Abotah

Dissertations and Theses

The wide use of renewable energy technologies for generating electricity can be seen as one way of meeting environmental and climate change challenges along with a progression to a low-carbon economy. A large number of policy instruments have been formed and employed to support the adoption of renewable energy technologies in the power generation sector. However, the success of these policies in achieving their goals relies on how effective they are in satisfying their targets and thus increasing renewable energy adoption. One measurement for effectiveness of policy instruments can be their contribution to the input of the process of renewable …

Increasing Understanding To Affect Behavior For Children With Asd, Sharon D. Darley

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Often times children with ASD lack the understanding of why a behavior is expected or how they should behave in certain situations. This session will help service providers to begin thinking like a person with ASD to reveal the reason for the behavior. This insight can assist service providers in creating unconventional solutions to increase understanding in the individual with ASD in order to make more informed decisions regarding his/her behavior.

Devalued, Misunderstood, And Marginalized: Why Nontraditional Students’ Experiences Should Be Included In The Diversity Discourse, Cynthia Howard Sims Ed.D., Deborah R. Barnett Ph.D. Nov 2014

Devalued, Misunderstood, And Marginalized: Why Nontraditional Students’ Experiences Should Be Included In The Diversity Discourse, Cynthia Howard Sims Ed.D., Deborah R. Barnett Ph.D.

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Objective: This paper presents a rationale for discussing the marginalization of nontraditional students in the diversity discourse. Background: There is tremendous growth in adult college student enrollment, however marginalization of the nontraditional population is perpetuated through institutional policies and practices. Although there has been improvement in educational access for these students, they are still neglected programmatically and in service provision, similar to underrepresented student populations. This neglect is apparent in the omission of their experiences in scholarly diversity literature. Method: A content analysis of 706 sources was conducted to determine how often and in what ways nontraditional adult student experiences …

Changes in the US Healthcare System along with the need for institutions of higher education to prepare a work force ready to address the challenges of today and tomorrow have highlighted the need to incorporate technology in its broadest sense as part of the student learning experience. In health professional education, this becomes challenging as programs have traditionally relied on face-to-face instruction along with internship experiences which provide hands on patient care. In addition, learning activities that incorporate higher order critical thinking must be incorporated in order to meet competency based professional expectations as well as expectations in the work …

Polarization-driven resistive switching in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs)—structures composed of two electrodes separated by an ultrathin ferroelectric barrier—offers new physics and materials functionalities, as well as exciting opportunities for the next generation of non-volatile memories and logic devices. Performance of FTJs is highly sensitive to the electrical boundary conditions, which can be controlled by electrode material and/or interface engineering. Here, we demonstrate the use of graphene as electrodes in FTJs that allows control of interface properties for significant enhancement of device performance. Ferroelectric polarization stability and resistive switching are strongly affected by a molecular layer at the graphene/BaTiO3 interface. …

Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun Nov 2014

Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

The current study aimed to explore the relationships between parental involvement during adolescence on sexual behaviors among college students. Research has shown that parental involvement decreases as students move from high school to college, but the impact that parents had on their students while in high school continues into college. It is important to determine if one factor relating to the number of sexual partners, sexual activity, and contraceptive use is parental involvement during adolescence. After approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), an online survey using Survey Monkey was administered to a convenience sample of undergraduate students in a …

Direct Electrochemistry Of Photosynthetic Proteins With Application To The Construction Of A Photo-Bioelectrochemical Cell, Yun Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Direct voltammetry of the redox cofactors in bacterial reaction center (RC) proteins and spinach PSII core complex was investigated in this dissertation. Peak assignments were made through the use of comparisons with multiple control experiments involving isolated proteins, those depleted of specific cofactors and those affected by exogenous chemical reagents. RCs having undergone site-specific mutagenesis were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) methods. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants were extracted from the datasets and simulations were used to determine the number of electrons transferred between the cofactor and the electrode. The work seeks to provide …
