Bringing Fiber To Art And Art To Fiber, Jo Stealey Sep 2014

Bringing Fiber To Art And Art To Fiber, Jo Stealey

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Contemporary basketry has evolved over the last 60 years to be integrated into the art world at large. The panel will address what is new and innovative in this movement, and ask how is the work of this generation influenced by the previous generation of basketmakers? This panelists will illustrate how the movement continues to be redefined due to the influences of Joanne Segal Brandford and Lillian Elliott by looking at innovative artists who have contributed fresh patterns, channels and momentum to this innovative medium. Furthermore, the panel will examine how this confluence influences current emerging artists.

Areas of discussion …

Chronology, Mythology, Invention: John Bevan Ford’S Maori Cloak Images, Suzanne P. Macaulay

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Symposium’s theme linking past actions to future creations implies a linear and sequential correspondence between them - one precedes the other yet offers possibilities to be realized at some future point in time. A different model for time sequencing where past, present and future are conceptually more integrated is the New Zealand Maori view of ancestral presence manifest in the past, but also present in the future. To paraphrase a Maori proverb, “the ancestors stand behind a person, but also stand ahead.” Thus, within this non-European concept of time, the ancestors are simultaneously regarded as both progenitors and future …

Flax Fibre: Innovation And Change In The Early Neolithic; A Technological And Material Perspective, Susanna Harris Sep 2014

Flax Fibre: Innovation And Change In The Early Neolithic; A Technological And Material Perspective, Susanna Harris

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Flax (Linum sp.) was one of the first domestic plants in Neolithic Europe, providing a potential cultivable source of fibres for the first farmers. As the plant provides both oil and fibre, it is a matter of enquiry as to whether the plant was first domesticated for its seeds or stem. Through examining new data collected by the EUROEVOL Project, UCL it is possible to chart the earliest archaeobotanical evidence for flax species in Europe. This provides the basis on which to consider the origin of fibres from the flax plant (linen) as a basis for change and innovation …

Pulling Strings: Textiles, Community And Diy In Post-Industrial Hamilton, Jen Anisef, Thea Haines, Tara Bursey

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the city formerly known as Canada’s Steeltown, the economic recession of the 1990s, suburban sprawl, and the collapse of Hamilton’s steel industry had a devastating impact on the city’s vitality. An exodus of commercial retail and corporate tenancy from the core of the city left many buildings vacant. In the last decade, Hamilton’s creative community has emerged as a major force in downtown renewal, neighbourhood building, and civic engagement and pride. How do histories of manufacturing and processes of deindustrialization permeate local maker culture? How does a city’s history of industrial production intertwine with contemporary local craft and textile-based …

Challenging Tradition In Religious Textiles: The Mata Ni Pachedi Of India, Donald Clay Johnson Sep 2014

Challenging Tradition In Religious Textiles: The Mata Ni Pachedi Of India, Donald Clay Johnson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

A community of block printers and dyers in the Indian state of Gujarat has concentrated upon producing religious textiles for nomadic groups. These unique textiles, known as Mata Ni Pachedi, fulfill the need for a religious representation/environment for groups who have no permanent settlement and thus need to construct temporary shrines for their religious ceremonies. The brilliant red, white, and black cloths portray events from the Mother Goddess tradition. Her depiction as the central and by far the largest representation, as well as the Hindu God Ganesh, distinctively identifies these religious cloths. Since the cloths need to be dried in …

Interwoven Connections: Examining The History Of Scottish Carpet Design To Inform Future Learning, Teaching And Research, Helena Britt Sep 2014

Interwoven Connections: Examining The History Of Scottish Carpet Design To Inform Future Learning, Teaching And Research, Helena Britt

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

As with much of the textile industry in the United Kingdom, carpet manufacturing in the West of Scotland was once thriving. Powder was ground, paint mixed, design papers painted, yarn dyed, spools set and carpets woven. The history of the carpet manufacturing innovators, Stoddard Templeton, dates back to 1845 when James Templeton, a Scot and then Alfred Francis Stoddard, an American, began to produce carpets from disused Paisley shawl mills. The story is one of growth, expansion, worldwide prominence and unfortunately eventual decline. Stoddard Templeton produced carpets for a highly prestigious array of events and interiors including royal coronations and …

We generated a mouse model with a 162 nt AU-rich element (ARE) region deletion in the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of the interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) gene that results in chronic circulating serum IFN-γ levels. Mice homozygous for the ARE deletion (ARE-Del) (-/-) present both serologic and cellular abnormalities typical of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). ARE-Del(-/-) mice display increased numbers of pDCs in bone marrow and spleen. Addition of IFN-γ to Flt3-ligand (Flt3L) treated in vitro bone marrow cultures results in a 2-fold increase in pDCs with concurrent increases in IRF8 expression. Marginal zone B (MZB) cells and marginal zone …

Textile Materials And Techniques In Central Europe In The 2nd And 1st Millennia Bc, Karina Grömer Sep 2014

Textile Materials And Techniques In Central Europe In The 2nd And 1st Millennia Bc, Karina Grömer

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

For over a millennium, the site of Hallstatt, located in the Austrian Alps, was a meeting point between north and south, east and west, serving as a melting pot of new ideas and innovations. About 300 textile units (more than 700 single fragments) from Bronze and Iron Ages are known from the prehistoric salt mines, dating from 1500-300 BC. They display a wide range of textile techniques and provide insight in different aspects of textile craft. Their outstanding preservation allows us to investigate many crucial steps in the chaîne opératoire of textile production. The 2nd millennium BC is a time, …

Stitches Of War: Women’S Commentaries On Conflict In Latin America, Deborah A. Deacon Sep 2014

Stitches Of War: Women’S Commentaries On Conflict In Latin America, Deborah A. Deacon

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the past thirty years, new forms of women’s textiles began appearing throughout Latin America. The techniques used were not indigenous to the region, yet they were used as forms of self-expression of the horrors and sorrows the women experienced as the result of warfare in the region. In the 1970s Chilean artist Violeta Parra Sandoval introduced arpillera-making to women living in Santiago who experienced first hand the agony of having family members tortured, killed or “disappeared” at the hands of the government. Arpilleras use embroidery and appliqué to create scenes of repression, violence and loss. Banned within Chile and …

Investigation Of Evolutionary Events In Corynebacteriaceae Involving Prenyltransferases In Corynebacterium Glutamicum, Michael Allen, Kscie Nelson, Francis Mann Sep 2014

Investigation Of Evolutionary Events In Corynebacteriaceae Involving Prenyltransferases In Corynebacterium Glutamicum, Michael Allen, Kscie Nelson, Francis Mann

Student Research and Creative Projects 2014-2015

Terpenoids, a class of compounds with 30,000 unique structures, are known to include antitumor compounds, pigments, vitamins, antibiotics, and flavor molecules. Prenyltransferases are the primary enzyme responsible for assembling the carbon backbone of these compounds from five carbon isoprene units. Bioinformatic analysis has indicated that an evolutionary event has resulted in the acquisition of an additional prenyltransferase in Corynebacterium glutamicum (C. glutamicum) compared to the majority of the Corynebacteriaceae. This result suggests that C. glutamicum may produce a non-essential terpenoid compound, or secondary metabolite. Sequencing has confirmed the successful cloning of the aforementioned genes. Present work includes expressing these genes …

Restoring The Balancing Test: A Better Approach To Fair Use In Copyright, Charlie Penrod Sep 2014

Restoring The Balancing Test: A Better Approach To Fair Use In Copyright, Charlie Penrod

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

Fair use analyses are overly vague and abstract. While the Copyright Act established four factors for courts to consider when determining if an alleged infringer’s use of copyrighted work is “fair”, these factors are not susceptible to easy interpretation. More importantly, once these factors have been interpreted, a trier of fact is instructed to balance these factors against each other. No effective method currently exists in guiding courts as to how to balance inherently disparate factors against each other, either in terms of intensity of the factors or how one factor might balance against another totally different factor. This article …

Silent Similarity, Jessica Litman Sep 2014

Silent Similarity, Jessica Litman

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

From 1909 to 1930, U.S. courts grappled with claims by authors of prose works claiming that works in a new art form—silent movies—had infringed their copyrights. These cases laid the groundwork for much of modern copyright law, from their broad expansion of the reproduction right, to their puzzled grappling with the question how to compare works in dissimilar media, to their confusion over what sort of evidence should be relevant to show copyrightability, copying and infringement. Some of those cases—in particular, Nichols v. Universal Pictures—are canonical today. They are not, however, well-understood. In particular, the problem at the heart …

Cytokine Gene Expression Profiles During Initiation, Progression And Resolution Of Periodontitis, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Michael John Novak, Arnold J. Stromberg, Shu Shen, Luis Orraca, Janis Gonzalez-Martinez, Armando Burgos, Octavio A. Gonzalez

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

AIM: Variations in the expression of cytokines during the progression of periodontitis remain ill-defined. We evaluated the expression of 19 cytokine genes related to T-cell phenotype/function during initiation, progression and resolution of periodontitis, and related these to the expression of soft and bone tissue destruction genes (TDGs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A ligature-induced periodontitis model was used in rhesus monkeys (M. mulatta) (n = 18). Gingival tissues were taken at baseline pre-ligation, 2 weeks and 1 month (Initiation) and 3 months (progression) post ligation. Ligatures were removed and samples taken 2 months later (resolution). Total RNA was isolated and the Rhesus …

Why Do Mississippi Delta And Hills Populations Of Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus Lineolaris) (Hemiptera:Miridae) Impact Cotton Differently?, D. E. Fleming, F. R. Musser Sep 2014

Why Do Mississippi Delta And Hills Populations Of Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus Lineolaris) (Hemiptera:Miridae) Impact Cotton Differently?, D. E. Fleming, F. R. Musser

Midsouth Entomologist

Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus lineolaris, is a serious pest of cotton in Mississippi, but damage to cotton and costs for control are not the same in the two cotton growing regions of Mississippi. Economic losses to L. lineolaris are higher in the Delta region than in the Hills region. Reasons for the differences may be due to the differences in the landscape between the two regions. The Hills region is a more heterogeneous landscape than the Delta and this difference may affect insecticide resistance rates, levels of beneficial insects and pathogens, and movement of L. lineolaris. This report discusses these …

Contact Zone Of The Eastern And Western Marsh Wrens In Nebraska Revisited, Mark B. Robbins Sep 2014

Contact Zone Of The Eastern And Western Marsh Wrens In Nebraska Revisited, Mark B. Robbins

Nebraska Bird Review

Across the northern and coastal United States and southern central Canada the Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris) is a widespread breeder in cattail-dominated marshes. Although it has long been considered to be polytypic based on subtle plumage characters (Parkes 1959; Phillips 1986), it was not until Kroodsma (1989, 2005) demonstrated that there was a dramatic break in the primary (song) vocalization in the northern Great Plains that anyone suggested more than one species was involved. In 1986, as part of the delineation of the breeding distribution of both vocal types, Kroodsma (1988; see map therein) audio recorded wrens at …

Summer Field Report, June–July 2014, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This summer was marked by the "unremarkability," if there is such a thing, of the status of almost all species, especially passerines. A stark exception, however, was the pair of summering hummingbirds in a yard a few miles southeast of Chadron: Juanita Whittecar sent a collection of very good photos of these birds, detailed enough to determine that the pair of supposed Ruby-throated Hummingbirds actually consisted of a female Ruby-throated and a hybrid Ruby-throated x Broad-tailed male. Another odd phenomenon was the number of shorebird species with late Jun records, usually the brief window within which these species are absent …

Stomach Content Analysis Of Recent Snowy Owl (Bubo Scandiacus) Specimens From Nebraska, Rachel L. Valenziano, Thomas E. Labedz

Nebraska Bird Review

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a circumpolar bird of prey that breeds in extreme northern latitudes, including Canadian and Alaskan tundra. During winter months, some immature and non-breeding birds disperse south. North American birds may travel to southern Canada and northern parts of the United States, and in some extreme cases as far south as Oklahoma and Texas (Parmelee 1992). Although not fully understood, these irruptive events may be caused by the abundance of prey in northern Canada and Alaska (Parmelee 1992).

Prey typical of Snowy Owls are small mammals (e.g., lemmings and hares) of their home range and …

The Antimicrobial Activity Of Whey Permeate (Against Escherichia Coli Atcc 25922), Sahand Mohsen Pour [Thesis]

Other resources

This project evaluated the antimicrobial activity of whey samples and its potential as a new sanitising agent. Whey samples produced during the manufacture of various cheese types were tested. Different thermal treatments (65°C for 10, 20 and 30 minutes, 72°C for 15 sec and 121°C for 15 minutes) were applied to the whey samples. The impact of the heat treatment on mesophilic, psychrotrophic and lactic acid bacteria, yeast and moulds were monitored. The physio-chemical properties (pH, water activity, moisture content, ash content, soluble solids and turbidity), proximate analysis (protein content using the Bradford assay and peptide pattern using SDS-PAGE) of …

Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman Sep 2014

Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Noteworthy species endemic to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador are two flightless birds, the Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) and Flightless Cormorant (Phalacrocrax harrisi). Both adapted increased swimming ability at the cost of flight. This however has limited their ability to find richer feeding grounds in times of low resource availability, or to escape potential predators. Their population numbers, though small, were stable. Stress on this stability has increased since human arrival. Various invasive species from pets, farm animals and rats to even mosquito vectors of avian disease accompanied humans. . El Nino Southern Oscillation or ENSO …

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Virulence of infectious pathogens can be unstable and evolve rapidly depending on the evolutionary dynamics of the organism. Experimental evolution can be used to characterize pathogen evolution, often with the underlying objective of understanding evolution of virulence. We used experimental evolution techniques (serial transfer experiments) to investigate differential growth and virulence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungal pathogen that causes amphibian chytridiomycosis. We tested two lineages of Bd that were derived from a single cryo-archived isolate; one lineage (P10) was passaged 10 times, whereas the second lineage (P50) was passaged 50 times. We quantified time to …

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 6th (2014)

This study is the fifth in a series of studies conducted by Love146 in collaboration with partnering organizations that explores the little-known lives and experiences of sexually exploited males and male-to-female transgender persons (from here on referred to as “transgender persons”) in Southeast Asia. It is a part of a small, collaborative movement among interested organizations who have both recognized and acted upon the neglect of males and sexual minorities in discussions of sexual abuse and exploitation. While the vulnerability of women and girls continues to be the subject of much research and a key concern among social service providers, …
