Medicinal History Of North American Veratrum, Christopher M. Chandler, Owen M. Mcdougal Sep 2014

Medicinal History Of North American Veratrum, Christopher M. Chandler, Owen M. Mcdougal

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plants belonging to the genus Veratrum have been used throughout history for their medicinal properties. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, phytochemical investigations revealed a host of steroidal alkaloids in Veratrum species, some of which are potent bioactives. This review discusses Veratrum species that grow in North America with a focus on the medicinal history of these plants and the steroidal alkaloids they contain. While significant reviews have been devoted to singularly describing the plant species within the genus Veratrum (botany), the staggering breadth of alkaloids isolated from these and related plants (phytochemistry), and the intricacies of how the various …

The Social Evolution Of Terror And Genocide Across Time And Geographic Space: Perspectives From Evolutionary Game Theory, Charles Anderton Sep 2014

The Social Evolution Of Terror And Genocide Across Time And Geographic Space: Perspectives From Evolutionary Game Theory, Charles Anderton

Economics Department Working Papers

This article uses evolutionary game theory to reveal the interpersonal and geographic characteristics of a society that make it vulnerable to a conquest from within by terrorist organizations and genocide architects. Under conditions identified in the space-less version of the model, entrepreneurs of violence can create the social metamorphosis of a peaceful people group into one that supports or does not resist violence against an out-group. The model is extended into geographic space by analyzing interactions among peaceful and aggressive phenotypes in Moore and von Neumann neighborhoods. The model also reveals policy interventions in which the social evolution of aggression …

Dba/2j Mice Are Susceptible To Diabetic Nephropathy And Diabetic Exacerbation Of Iop Elevation, Ileana Soto Reyes, Gareth R. Howell, Cai W. John, Joseph L. Kief, Richard T. Libby, Simon W.M. John Sep 2014

Dba/2j Mice Are Susceptible To Diabetic Nephropathy And Diabetic Exacerbation Of Iop Elevation, Ileana Soto Reyes, Gareth R. Howell, Cai W. John, Joseph L. Kief, Richard T. Libby, Simon W.M. John

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Some pathological manifestations of diabetes in the eye include retinopathy, cataracts and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in non-proliferative stages of diabetic retinopathy and small increases in IOP in diabetic patients has raised the possibility that diabetes affects the development and progression of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The Ins2Akita mutation is known to cause diabetes and retinopathy on a C57BL/6J (B6) background by as early as 3 months of age. Here, the impact of the Akita mutation on glaucoma was assessed using DBA/2J (D2) mice, a widely used mouse model of ocular hypertension induced glaucoma. …

Metabolomics Characterization Of U.S. And Japanese F-15 And C-130 Flight Line Crews Exposed To Jet Fuel Volatile Organic Compounds And Aerosols, Nicholas J. Delraso, David Mattie, Asao Kobayashi, Stephen W. Mitchell, Scott Dillard, Michael L. Raymer, Isaie Sibomana, Nicholas V. Reo Sep 2014

Metabolomics Characterization Of U.S. And Japanese F-15 And C-130 Flight Line Crews Exposed To Jet Fuel Volatile Organic Compounds And Aerosols, Nicholas J. Delraso, David Mattie, Asao Kobayashi, Stephen W. Mitchell, Scott Dillard, Michael L. Raymer, Isaie Sibomana, Nicholas V. Reo

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Air and ground crews transfer a significant amount of jet fuel, and as a result of transfers, breathe its volatile emission from residues. Working on the flight line also exposes maintainers to exhaust from the jet fuel as engines are tested or run before and after flight. Since little is known concerning level of exposure and the corresponding biological response associated with human jet fuel exposure, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics analysis of human urine was utilized for characterization of metabolite profiles of flight line personnel for potential biomarker discovery. This project was a collaborative research effort between the US …

Toward A New Theory Of Waste: From "Matter Out Of Place" To Signs Of Life , Joshua Reno Sep 2014

Toward A New Theory Of Waste: From "Matter Out Of Place" To Signs Of Life , Joshua Reno

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

This paper offers a counterpoint to the prevailing account of waste in the human sciences. This account identifies waste, firstly, as the anomalous product of arbitrary social categorizations, or ‘matter out of place’, and, secondly, as a distinctly human way of leaving behind and interpreting traces, or a mirror of culture. Together, these positions reflect a more or less constructivist and anthropocentric approach. Most commonly, waste is placed within a framework that privileges considerations of meaning over materiality and the threat of death over the perpetuity of life processes. For an alternative I turn to bio-semiotics and cross-species scholarship around …

Olanzapine-Induced Methylation Alters Cadherin Gene Families And Associated Pathways Implicated In Psychosis, Melkaye G. Melka, Christina A Castellani, Nagalingam Rajakumar, Richard O'Reilly, Shiva M Singh

Biology Publications

BACKGROUND: The complex aetiology of most mental disorders involves gene-environment interactions that may operate using epigenetic mechanisms particularly DNA methylation. It may explain many of the features seen in mental disorders including transmission, expression and antipsychotic treatment responses. This report deals with the assessment of DNA methylation in response to an antipsychotic drug (olanzapine) on brain (cerebellum and hippocampus), and liver as a non-neural reference in a rat model. The study focuses on the Cadherin/protocadherins encoded by a multi-gene family that serve as adhesion molecules and are involved in cell-cell communication in the mammalian brain. A number of these molecules …

Sharp Emergence Of Feature-Selective Sustained Activity Along The Dorsal Visual Pathway., Diego Mendoza-Halliday, Santiago Torres, Julio C Martinez-Trujillo

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Sustained activity encoding visual working memory representations has been observed in several cortical areas of primates. Where along the visual pathways this activity emerges remains unknown. Here we show in macaques that sustained spiking activity encoding memorized visual motion directions is absent in direction-selective neurons in early visual area middle temporal (MT). However, it is robustly present immediately downstream, in multimodal association area medial superior temporal (MST), as well as and in the lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC). This sharp emergence of sustained activity along the dorsal visual pathway suggests a functional boundary between early visual areas, which encode sensory inputs, …

Long-Term Cre-Mediated Retrograde Tagging Of Neurons Using A Novel Recombinant Pseudorabies Virus, Hysell V. Oviedo, Hassasna K. Oyibo, Petr Znamenskiy, Lynn W. Enquist, Anthony M. Zador

Publications and Research

Brain regions contain diverse populations of neurons that project to different long-range targets. The study of these subpopulations in circuit function and behavior requires a toolkit to characterize and manipulate their activity in vivo. We have developed a novel set of reagents based on Pseudorabies Virus (PRV) for efficient and long-term genetic tagging of neurons based on their projection targets. By deleting IE180, the master transcriptional regulator in the PRV genome, we have produced a mutant virus capable of infection and transgene expression in neurons but unable to replicate in or spread from those neurons. IE180-null mutants showed no cytotoxicity, …

Fdi Effects On Economic Growth: The Role Of Natural Resource And Environmental Policy, Maryam Asghari, Nathalie Hilmi, Alain Safa Sep 2014

Fdi Effects On Economic Growth: The Role Of Natural Resource And Environmental Policy, Maryam Asghari, Nathalie Hilmi, Alain Safa

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a crucial ingredient of the global economy. In the Persian Gulf, FDI is a major source of economic growth, employment, technology, and productivity. Because of these benefits, attracting FDI in the Persian Gulf region has become a key element of strategies promoting economic development. Natural resources and environmental policy in host countries may affect the FDIeconomic growth relationship. There has been much dispute as to whether economies that are open and those with more natural capital and lax environmental policy grow faster. This paper examines whether natural resources and environmental policy in Persian Gulf countries …

Statistical Signs Of Social Influence On Suicides, Hygor Piaget M. Melo, André A. Moreira, Élcio Batista, Hernán A. Makse, José S. Andrade

Publications and Research

By treating the suicide as a social fact, Durkheim envisaged that suicide rates should be determined by the connections between people and society. Under the same framework, he considered that crime is bound up with the fundamental conditions of all social life. The social effect on the occurrence of homicides has been previously substantiated, and confirmed here, in terms of a superlinear scaling relation: by doubling the population of a Brazilian city results in an average increment of 135% in the number of homicides, rather than the expected isometric increase of 100%, as found, for example, for the mortality due …

The Refining Of A Domestic Art: Surayia Rahman, Niaz Zaman, Cathy Stevulak Sep 2014

The Refining Of A Domestic Art: Surayia Rahman, Niaz Zaman, Cathy Stevulak

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Kantha or, as it is increasingly referred to now, nakshi kantha, is an important women’s domestic art of Bengal. Layers of old garments such as saris, lungis and dhotis are stitched into objects of functional, ritual, or ceremonial use. In Bangladesh, kantha was revived as a commercial activity to provide work for women left destitute after the 1971 war. In the mid-1980’s, it was further developed as a public art. One of the key players in this revival was Surayia Rahman, who refined a domestic art, for private use, into fine art, for public display. Initially an artist who painted …

Beyond Wool: New York’S Diverse Fibershed For Textiles And Clothing, Helen Trejo, Tasha Lewis, Michael Thonney Sep 2014

Beyond Wool: New York’S Diverse Fibershed For Textiles And Clothing, Helen Trejo, Tasha Lewis, Michael Thonney

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Sustainable fashion expert Rebecca Burgess introduced the notion “fibershed” in 2011 as an allusion to “watershed,” which refers to bodies of water that pass through several geographic regions. “Fibershed” includes not only fibers like wool, but also mills and fiber studios within a particular region. Little is known about the diversity of fiber resources available in New York’s rural communities. Assessing New York’s fibershed can be beneficial to textile/ apparel production within the state. Resources within the fibershed can support economic growth in New York’s rural regions through both agro-tourism and linkages with New York City’s fashion industry. To assess …
