Effect Of Soil Sampling Density And Landscape Features On Soil Test Phosphorus, Donald J. Stamper, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark A. Purschwitz Sep 2014

Effect Of Soil Sampling Density And Landscape Features On Soil Test Phosphorus, Donald J. Stamper, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark A. Purschwitz

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Organic and/or inorganic fertilizers are used to promote crop growth yet the rate of fertilizer application is often based on the nitrogen needs of the crop and not the phosphorus needs, especially when utilizing animal manures with low N-to-P ratios as compared to plant N:P uptake. Because of this, soil phosphorus levels in many areas of the world are in excess of crop needs. Excessive levels of phosphorus in water bodies such as streams and lakes can result in a condition known as eutrophication. With eutrophication, nutrients promote algal growth which in turn decreases dissolved oxygen levels in receiving water …

Reconciling Tax Law And Securities Regulation, Omri Marian Sep 2014

Reconciling Tax Law And Securities Regulation, Omri Marian

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Issuers in registered securities offerings must disclose the expected tax consequences to investors investing in the offered securities (“nonfinancial tax disclosure”). This Article advances three arguments regarding nonfinancial tax disclosures. First, nonfinancial tax disclosure practice, as the Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC) has sanctioned it, does not fulfill its intended regulatory purposes. Currently, nonfinancial tax disclosures provide irrelevant information, sometimes fail to provide material information, create unnecessary transaction costs, and divert valuable administrative resources to the enforcement of largely-meaningless requirements. Second, the practical reason for this failure is the SEC and tax practitioners’ unsuccessful attempt to address investors’ heterogeneous …

Dna Real Estate: The Myriad Genetics Case And The Implications Of Granting Patent Eligibility To Complimentary Dna, Sarah Elizabeth Hagan Sep 2014

Dna Real Estate: The Myriad Genetics Case And The Implications Of Granting Patent Eligibility To Complimentary Dna, Sarah Elizabeth Hagan

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In June 2013, in Ass'n for Molecular Pathology et. al., v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., the Supreme Court examined the patent eligibility of isolated (human) DNA and its components. This was in response to advances in breast cancer prescreening surrounding mutations associated with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In accordance with 35 U.S.C. §101, the Court evaluated whether naturally occurring segments of DNA and synthetically created segments of v DNA were patent eligible. The Court found that while isolated natural DNA segments were patent ineligible, synthetically created DNA segments were not precluded. This Note examines the potential economic and ethical implications …

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo Sep 2014

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article introduces a new conceptual framework to the legal literature on pregnancy and pregnancy discrimination: the fourth trimester. The concept of a fourth trimester, drawn from maternal nursing and midwifery, refers to the crucial three to six month period after birth when many of the physical, psychological, emotional, and social effects of pregnancy continue. Giving this concept legal relevance extends the scope of pregnancy beyond the narrow period defined by conception, gestation, and birth and acknowledges that pregnancy is a relational process, not an individual event. In the United States, however, antidiscrimination law has failed to acknowledge the demands …

Education Transformation In Malaysia Through Spiritual Intelligence: Perspective Of Imam Al Ghazzali, S.B. Hanefar, Saedah Siraj, C.Z. Sa’Ari Sep 2014

Education Transformation In Malaysia Through Spiritual Intelligence: Perspective Of Imam Al Ghazzali, S.B. Hanefar, Saedah Siraj, C.Z. Sa’Ari

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Education in Malaysia is going through a transformation period from knowledge based education to value based (holistic) education which is being clearly objectified in the National Education Philosophy. But somehow rather the implementation of this holistic education seems to be vague across many stages of education in Malaysia especially the implementation of spiritual intelligence. There is a gap between the current practices in our education industry with the National Education Philosophy. Many social problems among students and adolescents are being reported that are very alarming and could be the hindrance factor for Malaysia to achieve its Vision 2020. To achieve …

Redefining Game Engine Architecture Through Concurrency, A. Mohebali, T.K. Chiew Sep 2014

Redefining Game Engine Architecture Through Concurrency, A. Mohebali, T.K. Chiew

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Over the past 30 years, software developers have been conveniently taking advantage of hardware performance increase, giving little consideration to internal architecture changes of the hardware like central processing unit. In the years to come, these hardware architectural changes will affect software architectures and can no longer be ignored. This is especially true for real-time applications, which tend to push the limits of hardware and take the most advantage of available resources. As a result, computer game applications which are inherently real-time and known for pushing computer hardware boundaries will not be immune. By studying the concepts of concurrency, multithreading …

Whither Latin America? Scoping Export Potentials And Trade Barriers In The Malaysia-Chile Partnership, E.S. Devadason, V.G.R. Chandran, S. Mubarik

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This study seeks to compare bilateral export potential estimates in the Malaysia-Chile partnership within the COntextof the emerging region of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and identify barriers to trade, to provide insights into bilateral market access for exporters. Clearly, the empirical findings suggest overtrading in the major exporting sectors from both sides, since the export basket is also concentrated both ways in the Malaysia-Chile trade. Through the interviews, fewer restrictions are reported by the various stakeholders, as the extent of trade engagement is still somewhat low. Instead, the challenges identified within specific sub-sectors from both sides relate mainly …

A Preliminary Report On The Contact-Independent Antagonism Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans By Rhodococcus Rhodochrous Strain Dap96253., Christopher T. Cornelison, M. Kevin Keel, Kyle T. Gabriel

KIP Articles

The recently identified causative agent of White-Nose Syndrome (WNS), Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has been responsible for the mortality of an estimated 5.5 million North American bats since its emergence in 2006. A primary focus of the National Response Plan, established by multiple state, federal and tribal agencies in 2011, was the identification of biological control options for WNS. In an effort to identify potential biological control options for WNS, multiple induced Rhodococcus rhodochrous strain DAP96253 was screened for anti-P. destructans activity.

The Effect Of An Integrated Music Curriculum On Reading Achievement Outcomes Of Kindergarten Students, Tracy St. Clair

Dissertations

At the time of this study, school districts in the United States faced challenges relative to educational accountability, especially in the areas of language arts and mathematics. Research suggested that music held the potential to bolster student engagement and academic achievement to improve reading outcomes for students. An integrated music curriculum was designed and implemented by the researcher to support reading achievement in a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. The purpose of this counterbalanced research design was to examine the effect of an integrated music curriculum upon the reading achievement of kindergarten students. The lesson framework included brain-based and active listening …

Cold Tolerance In Terrestrial Invertebrates Inhabiting Subterranean Habitats, Tone Novak, Šajna Nina, Antolinc Estera Sep 2014

Cold Tolerance In Terrestrial Invertebrates Inhabiting Subterranean Habitats, Tone Novak, Šajna Nina, Antolinc Estera

KIP Articles

Most organisms are able to survive shorter or longer exposure to sub-zero temperatures. Hypothetically, trogloxenes characterized as not adapted, and troglophiles as not completely adapted to thermally stable subterranean environment, have retained or partially retained their ability to withstand freezing, while most troglobionts have not. We tested this hypothesis experimentally on 37 species inhabiting caves in Slovenia, analyzing their lower lethal temperatures in summer and winter, or for one season, if the species was not present in caves during both seasons. Specimens were exposed for 12 hrs to 1°C-stepwise descending temperatures with 48 hr breaks. In general, the resistance to …

Message from President: One of the favorite processes among those who study contemporary culture is disaggregation, the breaking apart of previously bundled ideas, resources, or experiences. Living in what might be described as the “à la carte” age requires a readiness to accept a degree of genial incoherence and thereby to increase the range and economy of selection at the expense of getting any reasonable facsimile of the big picture. Musical albums become downloaded singles; meals dissipate into fats, “carbs,” sodium, sugar, and an assortment of nutrients; books centrifugalize into first articles, then abstracts, then executive summaries, and finally into …

Lights And Larvae: Using Optogenetics To Teach Recombinant Dna And Neurobiology, John Titlow, Heidi Anderson, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Switching genes between organisms and controlling an animal’s brain using lasers may seem like science fiction, but with advancements in a technique called optogenetics, such experiments are now common in neuroscience research. Optogenetics combines recombinant DNA technology with a controlled light source to help researchers address biomedical questions in the life sciences. The technique has gained the most traction in neurobiology—the biology of the nervous system—where specific wavelengths of light are used to control or measure the activity of neurons in transgenic organisms (i.e., those with artificially inserted genes).

These optical recording and stimulation techniques are used in nervous system …

Relative Importance Of Environmental, Geographic, And Spatial Variables On Zooplankton Metacommunities, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake Sep 2014

Relative Importance Of Environmental, Geographic, And Spatial Variables On Zooplankton Metacommunities, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake

Faculty Publications

© 2014 Dallas and Drake. Understanding the factors responsible for structuring ecological communities is a central goal in community ecology. Previous work has focused on determining the relative roles of two classes of variables (e.g., spatial and environmental) on community composition. However, this approach may ignore the disproportionate impact of variables within classes, and is often confounded by spatial autocorrelation leading to collinearity among variables of different classes. Here, we combine pattern-based metacommunity and machine learning analyses to characterize metacommunity structure of zooplankton from lakes in the northeast United States and to identify environmental, spatial, and geographic covariates associated with …

High blood pressure (BP) is the most common cardiovascular risk factor worldwide and a major contributor to heart disease and stroke. We previously discovered a BP-associated missense SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism)–rs2272996–in the gene encoding vanin-1, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored membrane pantetheinase. In the present study, we first replicated the association of rs2272996 and BP traits with a total sample size of nearly 30,000 individuals from the Continental Origins and Genetic Epidemiology Network (COGENT) of African Americans (P = 0.01). This association was further validated using patient plasma samples; we observed that the N131S mutation is associated with significantly lower plasma vanin-1 …

Effects Of Oil On Terrestrial Vertebrates: Predicting Impacts Of The Macondo Blowout, Christine M.Bergeon Burns, Jill A. Olin, Philip C. Stouffer, Sabrina S. Taylor, Stefan Woltmann Sep 2014

Effects Of Oil On Terrestrial Vertebrates: Predicting Impacts Of The Macondo Blowout, Christine M.Bergeon Burns, Jill A. Olin, Philip C. Stouffer, Sabrina S. Taylor, Stefan Woltmann

Faculty Publications

In addition to external oiling, marine oil spills may affect vertebrate animals through degradation of habitat; alterations in food web structure; and contamination of resources by toxic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These processes are not well understood for vertebrates breeding and foraging in terrestrial ecosystems affected by oil, such as coastal marshes that were heavily oiled following the 2010 Macondo oil spill. Here, we review what is known about the ecological and physiological effects of oil exposure on vertebrates in general. We then apply these concepts to salt-marsh vertebrates, with special reference to our ongoing monitoring of impacts and …

Seeing Human Weight From A Single Rgb-D Image, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Shuicheng Yan Sep 2014

Seeing Human Weight From A Single Rgb-D Image, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Human weight estimation is useful in a variety of potential applications, e.g., targeted advertisement, entertainment scenarios and forensic science. However, estimating weight only from color cues is particularly challenging since these cues are quite sensitive to lighting and imaging conditions. In this article, we propose a novel weight estimator based on a single RGB-D image, which utilizes the visual color cues and depth information. Our main contributions are three-fold.

First, we construct the W8-RGBD dataset including RGB-D images of different people with ground truth weight.

Second, the novel sideview shape feature and the feature fusion model are proposed to facilitate …

Kir Channel Activation Contributes To Onset And Steady-State Exercise Hyperemia In Humans, Anne R. Crecelius, Gary J. Luckasen, Dennis G. Larson, Frank A. Dinenno Sep 2014

Kir Channel Activation Contributes To Onset And Steady-State Exercise Hyperemia In Humans, Anne R. Crecelius, Gary J. Luckasen, Dennis G. Larson, Frank A. Dinenno

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that activation of inwardly rectifying potassium (KIR) channels and Na+-K+-ATPase, two pathways that lead to hyperpolarization of vascular cells, contributes to both the onset and steady-state hyperemic response to exercise. We also determined whether after inhibiting these pathways nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins (PGs) are involved in the hyperemic response. Forearm blood flow (FBF; Doppler ultrasound) was determined during rhythmic handgrip exercise at 10% maximal voluntary contraction for 5 min in the following conditions: control [saline; trial 1 (T1)]; with combined inhibition of KIR channels and Na …

This lesson meets the criteria for the Next Generation Science Standard HS-LS4, Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity (NGSS Lead States, 2013).

Exhibition Handlist, Kathleen M. Webb Sep 2014

Exhibition Handlist, Kathleen M. Webb

Supplemental Media

In preparing for Imprints and Impressions, we ran across many interesting words that have fallen out of the general lexicon. With this booklet, we have brought one back: handlist. Dean Kathleen Webb ran across it in a 1944 booklet from the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City. Though the word no longer appears in most new dictionaries, it’s still in the Oxford English Dictionary:

A list of a particular type or category of things, presented in a readily consultable form; esp. a list of the books or manuscripts in a particular place, on a particular subject, etc.; …

David Hale's Store Ledger: New Details About Joseph And Emma Smith, The Hale Family, And The Book Of Mormon, Mark L. Staker, Robin S. Jensen

BYU Studies

In December 1827, Joseph and Emma Smith arrived in Harmony, Pennsylvania, to live while Joseph translated the gold plates. Harmony was the home of Emma's family, and Emma's brother David Hale had a small store that was used for trading goods and work among the neighbors. David kept a ledger that records Joseph's purchases of leatherwork, a shovel, a pocketbook, a pocketknife, and a comb. Joseph sold some pork and traded his own labor, and also hired others to help him with heavy chores. The ledger is now in the collections of Brigham Young University. This document provides a unique …
