A Small Subset Of Fruitless Subesophageal Neurons Modulate Early Courtship In Drosophila, David Tran, Geoffrey Meissner, Rachael French, Bruce Baker
A Small Subset Of Fruitless Subesophageal Neurons Modulate Early Courtship In Drosophila, David Tran, Geoffrey Meissner, Rachael French, Bruce Baker
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
We show that a small subset of two to six subesophageal neurons, expressing the male products of the male courtship master regulator gene products fruitlessMale (fruM), are required in the early stages of the Drosophila melanogaster male courtship behavioral program. Loss of fruM expression or inhibition of synaptic transmission in these fruM(+) neurons results in delayed courtship initiation and a failure to progress to copulation primarily under visually-deficient conditions. We identify a fruM-dependent sexually dimorphic arborization in the tritocerebrum made by two of these neurons. Furthermore, these SOG neurons extend descending projections to the thorax and abdominal ganglia. These anatomical …
Identifying Performance Criteria Of Fully Bioresorbable Scaffolds For Endovascular Applications, Jahid Ferdous
Identifying Performance Criteria Of Fully Bioresorbable Scaffolds For Endovascular Applications, Jahid Ferdous
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) have revolutionized percutaneous coronary intervention in clinical cardiovascular medicine. As opposed to permanent alternatives such as metallic stents, BRS have an inherent potential to reduce the occurrence of untoward events such as vessel re-narrowing or thrombosis by virtue of undergoing complete and controlled resorption post- implantation. While BRS platforms demonstrate a clear potential to mitigate risk stemming from incomplete vessel healing, they introduce a new set of considerations to clinical safety and efficacy. Foremost among these issues is the fate of and biological response to material by-products that evolve throughout the scaffold degradation and erosion processes, …
A Multiagent Approach Towards Solving Complex Problems Of Sociotechnical Systems, Hongying Du
A Multiagent Approach Towards Solving Complex Problems Of Sociotechnical Systems, Hongying Du
Theses and Dissertations
Complex resource allocation problems arise due to complex human societies and scarce resources to be distributed. Scarce resources could be food, water, and energy. Meanwhile, the size of the problem, the intersection of different areas, and possible global consequences all add to the complexity of the problems, which makes it difficult for humans to solve the problems by themselves.
For all these reasons, humans need technical help to tackle complex problems. Since humans participating in the problems usually own part of the information about the problems, and no one may see the whole picture of the problems, it is natural …
Isolation Of Natural Nrf2 Activators From American Ginseng, Akrm Abdalrahman
Isolation Of Natural Nrf2 Activators From American Ginseng, Akrm Abdalrahman
Theses and Dissertations
Nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), a major transcription factor of the endogenous antioxidant defense system, has been proposed as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of various diseases. However, a small molecule-driven Nrf2 signaling therapeutic approach remains to be established. Herein, we report one such possibility discovered by the bioassay-based fractionation of American ginseng. Since crude extract of American ginseng was found to suppress the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-inflamed macrophages via activating Nrf2, we further fractioned the crude extract using solvents including hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water, and found …
Comparative Recharge Rates Of Isolated And Riverine Wetlands, Chenille Hargrove Williams
Comparative Recharge Rates Of Isolated And Riverine Wetlands, Chenille Hargrove Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Isolated wetlands have a slightly depressed topography surrounded by an upland area. There is no direct surface water connection, as with riverine wetlands; however, there is a groundwater connection that allows isolated wetlands to have similar hydrologic functions to riverine wetlands. This study sought to compare surficial aquifer groundwater recharge rates of several isolated and riverine wetlands in the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas by evaluating soil characteristics, water table fluctuations, and precipitation from January 2012 - September 2012. Data analysis indicated no significant difference in mean recharge rates between the isolated and riverine wetlands at each study site. Whereas …
Playing At History: Resurrection Man And Historiographic Game Design, Jessica Ethel Tompkins
Playing At History: Resurrection Man And Historiographic Game Design, Jessica Ethel Tompkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates historical representation in video games and argues that two types dominate: 1) a semantic approach that engages players with the past via visual expressions; and 2) a cause and effect simulation approach that positions players in the context of historically situated possibilities. However, The author posits that the expressive power of video game worlds and mechanics afford deeper potentials for historical engagements. The author pursues a game design approach that takes seriously representations of the past and player inquiry at the forefront of the experience.
The historically contextualized video game is frequently discussed in the context of …
The Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Mass And Mitochondrial Biogenesis By Gp130/Stat3 Signaling During Cancer Cachexia, Melissa Puppa
The Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Mass And Mitochondrial Biogenesis By Gp130/Stat3 Signaling During Cancer Cachexia, Melissa Puppa
Theses and Dissertations
Cachexia affects nearly 70% of all cancer patients depending on the cancer, and decreases cancer survival. Cachexia is associated with muscle mass loss that is accompanied by a loss in muscle oxidative capacity, a decrease in protein synthesis and an increase in protein degradation. While progress has been made in understanding some of the mechanisms underlying the cachectic condition, there are currently no approved pharmaceutical interventions to slow or stop cachexia progression. The purpose this study was to determine the role of skeletal muscle gp130 and STAT3 signaling in the regulation of cachexia induced muscle atrophy and mitochondrial loss. Specific …

Diethylstilbestrol (Des) Mediates Immune Suppression Via Modulation Of Microrna Expression In Mice, Martine Menard
Diethylstilbestrol (Des) Mediates Immune Suppression Via Modulation Of Microrna Expression In Mice, Martine Menard
Theses and Dissertations
Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic compound and considered as an endocrine disruptor that interferes with the normal development of human organs and even immune tissues. DES has been investigated for its immunosuppressive effects, thymic atrophy, and various types of cancer including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, etc. In this study, we investigated DES regulated mechanisms in T cells and examined whether DES exposure of T cells leads immune suppression and affects immune functions. To this end, we investigated the effect of DES on T cells in vitro and specifically examined DES-induced apoptosis in T cells, expression of genes involved …
Synaptic Organization Of Noradrenergic And Opioid Circuitry In The Basolateral Amygdala: Anatomical Correlates Of Memory Consolidation, Jingyi Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The studies comprising this dissertation were designed to investigate the synaptic organization of norepinephrine and opioid system in the anterior subdivision of the basolateral nucleus of amygdala (BLa) in rat. Light and electron microscopy were combined with immunohistochemistry to determine the synaptic incidence and postsynaptic targets of noradrenergic axon terminals, to localize mu opioid receptor at the ultrastructural level and to determine whether there is convergence of norepinephrine inputs and enkephalin inputs in the BLa. It was determined that about half of the norepinephrine inputs formed synapses in the BLa and the main postsynaptic targets were small caliber CAMK+ dendritic …
Identification Of Clinical Markers That Predict The Outcomes Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infections And Identification Of Synergistic Antibiotic Combinations For The Treatment Of These Infections, Virginia Long
Master's Theses
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is a prominent nosocomial infection. Vancomycin is the mainstay of treatment, but it has a high rate of failure. Combination therapies can be used, but synergy is often not tested in clinical laboratories. Physicians are at a disadvantage because they cannot predict MRSA outcomes. The first aim of the study was to identify clinical and demographic markers that could predict infection recurrence or prolonged bacteremia. This was accomplished using retrospective chart review and statistical analysis. The second aim of the study was to identify which combinations, of those commonly used for MRSA treatment at Loyola, demonstrate the …
Diplomatic Solutions: Land Use In Anglo-Saxon Worcestershire, Kevin Anthony Caliendo
Diplomatic Solutions: Land Use In Anglo-Saxon Worcestershire, Kevin Anthony Caliendo
Dissertations
My dissertation is a study of the charters of the Worcester diocese from its foundation in approximately 680 to the tenth century. Bishops of Worcester, men is control of one of the wealthiest sees in Anglo-Saxon England, used charters to acquire land, obtain rights and privileges for their existing estates, and manage trade within limits imposed by the king. Rights associated with bookland, land held by charter, gave bishops and their agents the ability to direct settlement and field systems in order to maximize estate productivity and encourage trade through a system of urban and rural marketing of timber, salt, …
Catalytic Mechanism And Maturation Of The Metalloenzyme Nitrile Hydratase, Natalie I. Gumataotao
Catalytic Mechanism And Maturation Of The Metalloenzyme Nitrile Hydratase, Natalie I. Gumataotao
Dissertations
Nitrile hydratases are metalloenzymes that catalyze the hydration of nitriles to their corresponding amides in a specific manner at ambient pressures and temperatures at neutral pH. Traditional industrial methods require high temperature and pressure, extreme pH, and heavy metals. NHases are used as biocatalysts in the large scale industrial production of amide precursors to textiles, animal feedstock, and polymers. Notably, NHase is used in the production of ~100,000 tons of acrylamide annually by the Mitsubishi Corporation.
Despite being used extensively in industry, questions remain about NHase. The catalytic mechanism is not defined. Understanding the way in which the nitrile is …

Dissertations
In this dissertation I begin with the claim that silence is part of moral life. Moral philosophy must make every attempt to bring within it all that is part of moral life. The dissertation produces a methodology for learning how to see some of the silences that I claim for moral life and it shows the importance of silence to continuing moral self-formation.
Urban Agriculture And Sustainability In Chicago, Matthew Hoffmann
Urban Agriculture And Sustainability In Chicago, Matthew Hoffmann
Dissertations
Sustainability is increasingly informing the organization of urban life. In the past 15 years, cities have sought to alleviate the dual effects of environmental degradation and a changing economy by introducing sustainable development initiatives. Policy makers and environmental activists have often praised these efforts, pointing to the enhancement of quality of life, the mitigation of industrial pollution, and these initiatives' capacity to address poverty in a post-welfare state. Most popular depictions of the experiences of sustainability come from the perspective of white, middle class, college-educated volunteers and, increasingly, social entrepreneurs such as artisans, farmers, and other producers connected to "local" …
The Symptom Experience Of Patients Receiving Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors, Josephine Ann Howard-Ruben
The Symptom Experience Of Patients Receiving Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitors, Josephine Ann Howard-Ruben
Dissertations
This study explored the symptom experience of patients receiving epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) for breast, colon, head and neck, and colon cancer. EGFRIs are targeted therapies used at various points along the treatment continuum for these solid tumors, and may be first, second or third-line agents which can be used as single agents or in combination with other therapies. The most common side effect of these agents include dermatologic effects, such as rashes, hair, and nail changes, but they can also contribute to other side effects such as fatigue, anxiety and diarrhea. Most previous work has addressed the …
Peripubertal Binge Ethanol, Age And Sex Modulate Microrna Expression In The Ventral And Dorsal Hippocampus Of The Adolescent Rat, Sarah Arianne Prins
Peripubertal Binge Ethanol, Age And Sex Modulate Microrna Expression In The Ventral And Dorsal Hippocampus Of The Adolescent Rat, Sarah Arianne Prins
Dissertations
Adolescent binge ethanol (EtOH) abuse induces long-term changes in gene expression, resulting in an increased risk for the development of adult mood disorders. microRNAs (microRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression by translational repression. microRNA altered in response to EtOH and puberty in the developing brain. The biogenesis of mature 22-24 nucleotide (nt), single-stranded microRNAs involves Drosha and Dicer enzymatic processing of microRNA precursors. A mature microRNA imperfectly base pairs with messenger RNA (mRNA) target genes, which leads to mRNA cleavage or translational repression. Our lab has found that repeated binge EtOH exposure alters gene expression in the hypothalamus …
Investigating The Role Of The Pgf2 Alpha/Calcineurin-Signaling Pathway In The Regulation Of Adipogenesis, Damodaran Annamalai
Investigating The Role Of The Pgf2 Alpha/Calcineurin-Signaling Pathway In The Regulation Of Adipogenesis, Damodaran Annamalai
Dissertations
Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) is a potent physiological inhibitor of adipocyte differentiation. In previous studies, we demonstrated that PGF2α inhibits adipogenesis via activation of the calcium-regulated protein phosphatase, calcineurin. In this current study, we have now extended these findings to identify the IL-11 cytokine and the Nurr1 orphan nuclear hormone receptor as functionally important downstream transcriptional targets of the PGF2α/calcineurin-pathway involved in the inhibition of adipocyte differentiation. In the case of IL-11, we show that this cytokine acts in an autocrine fashion to inhibit adipogenesis via the essential actions of the gp130 cytokine co-receptor signaling subunit. Further, by using a well-characterized …
Predicting Emotion Regulation In Early Childhood: The Impact Of Maternal Well-Being, Infant Crying, And Dyadic Mutuality, Tiffany Burkhardt
Predicting Emotion Regulation In Early Childhood: The Impact Of Maternal Well-Being, Infant Crying, And Dyadic Mutuality, Tiffany Burkhardt
Dissertations
Learning adaptive emotion regulation skills in early childhood has been identified as fundamental to social competence, academic success, and psychological well-being. Because children learn to regulate their emotions through interactions with their caregivers, dyadic mutuality between the mother and infant may influence child emotion regulation capacity more than maternal behavior alone. To better understand the impact of maternal well-being and infant crying on the development of emotion regulation, parenting stress, maternal self-efficacy, maternal depression, and infant crying were examined with dyadic mutuality in the parent-child interaction to predict emotion regulation capacity.
A racially and socioeconomically diverse community sample of 149 …

The Molecular Components Of Estrogen Receptor Beta (Erβ) Signaling In Neuronal Sytems, Natasha Mott
The Molecular Components Of Estrogen Receptor Beta (Erβ) Signaling In Neuronal Sytems, Natasha Mott
Dissertations
With increasing life expectancy, women are now living upwards of 50 years without circulating estrogens, therefore, it is essential to investigate how the brain is changed by estrogen deprivation and also how aging influences these changes. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study spurred rigorous debate regarding estrogen therapy for postmenopausal women due to dichotomous effects of estrogens in menopausal and post-menopausal women. Meta-analyses of the WHI study revealed that after circulating estrogens are depleted for many years re-exposure may cause aberrant, negative health effects, indicating that there is an age-related `switch' in estrogen signaling around menopause. These age-related effects of …
The Affective Consequences Of Expressing Moral Convictions, Lisa Diana Sandberg
The Affective Consequences Of Expressing Moral Convictions, Lisa Diana Sandberg
Dissertations
This project examined the affective consequences of expressing moral convictions to an opposing majority. It was predicted that moral conviction would function as a buffer to the common negative emotions that occur when speaking out against majority opinion (e.g., fear; Asch, 1956; Berns, et al., 2005). It was also hypothesized that moral conviction would enhance positive feelings among those who speak out (e.g., pride). Two studies were conducting using two different research paradigms. Study 1 used a normative influence paradigm modeled after Hornsey, Smith, and Begg (2007). Participants' opinions and strength of moral conviction about the target issue (torture of …
2 Peter 2:4-16: The Redaction Of The Biblical And Intertestamental References Dependent On Jude 5-11 And Their Overall Significance For The Document, Jenny Devivo
Dissertations
For some time now, scholars have noted the close literary connection between Jude and 2 Peter, with thirteen of Jude's twenty-five verses paralleled in 2 Peter. One could say that the argument over the direction of dependency makes it the `synoptic problem' of the Catholic Epistles. Although the literary evidence is overwhelmingly supportive of 2 Peter's dependency on Jude, the prominence of the figure of Peter in Christian history seems to have influenced certain scholars to propose the contrary.
The arguments for the dependence of 2 Peter upon Jude will be addressed immediately in this dissertation since the focus of …

The Effect Of Dietary Fat Intake On Hepatic Gene Expression In Lg/J And Sm/J Mice, Charlyn G. Partridge, Gloria L. Fawcett, Bing Wang, Clay F. Semenkovich, James M. Cheverud
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
The liver plays a major role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and is vital for nutrient metabolism. Identifying the genetic factors regulating these processes could lead to a greater understanding of how liver function responds to a high-fat diet and how that response may influence susceptibilities to obesity and metabolic syndrome. In this study we examine differences in hepatic gene expression between the LG/J and SM/J inbred mouse strains and how gene expression in these strains is affected by high-fat diet. LG/J and SM/J are known to differ in their responses to a high-fat diet for a variety of obesity- …

Working to fulfill the course and clinical requirements for the English as a Second Language endorsement, candidates engaged in fieldwork and conducted authentic language assessments to glean the unique sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds, abilities, and needs of students to inform subsequent instruction. …
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
The Profanation Of Revelation: On Language And Immanence In The Work Of Giorgio Agamben, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay seeks to articulate the many implications which Giorgio Agamben's work holds for theology. It aims, therefore, to examine his (re)conceptualizations of language in light of particular historical glosses on the “name of God” and the nature of the “mystical,” as well as to highlight the political task of profanation, one of his most central concepts, in relation to the logos said to embody humanity's “religious” quest to find its Voice. As such, we see how he challenges those standard (ontotheological) notions of transcendence which have been consistently aligned with various historical forms of sovereignty. In addition, I intend …
Mother Jones: Ireland To North America To Ireland, Elliot Gorn
Mother Jones: Ireland To North America To Ireland, Elliot Gorn
History: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Although we don't hear her name so often anymore, Mother Jones was one of the great figures of the early twentieth century. She and her family were refugees from the Famine, and I want to argue here that her early life in Ireland, Canada, and the United States molded her, made her the great crusader for social justice and tribune of the working class that she became as an old woman. "Freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose," Kris Kristofferson has written, words that well describe the life of Mother Jones.
Relating Admissibility Standards For Digital Evidence To Attack Scenario Reconstruction, Changwei Liu, Anoop Singhal, Duminda Wijesekera
Relating Admissibility Standards For Digital Evidence To Attack Scenario Reconstruction, Changwei Liu, Anoop Singhal, Duminda Wijesekera
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Attackers tend to use complex techniques such as combining multi-step, multi-stage attack with anti-forensic tools to make it difficult to find incriminating evidence and reconstruct attack scenarios that can stand up to the expected level of evidence admissibility in a court of law. As a solution, we propose to integrate the legal aspects of evidence correlation into a Prolog based reasoner to address the admissibility requirements by creating most probable attack scenarios that satisfy admissibility standards for substantiating evidence. Using a prototype implementation, we show how evidence extracted by using forensic tools can be integrated with legal reasoning to reconstruct …
