A growing number of studies are evaluating retinal progenitor cell (RPC) transplantation as an approach to repair retinal degeneration and restore visual function. To advance cell-replacement strategies for a practical retinal therapy, it is important to define the molecular and biochemical mechanisms guiding RPC motility. We have analyzed RPC expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and evaluated whether exposure to epidermal growth factor (EGF) can coordinate motogenic activity in vitro. Using Boyden chamber analysis as an initial highthroughput screen, we determined that RPC motility was optimally stimulated by EGF concentrations in the range of 20-400ng/ml, with decreased stimulation …

Here Come The Nones! Pluralism And Evangelization After Denominationalism And Americanism, William L. Portier
Here Come The Nones! Pluralism And Evangelization After Denominationalism And Americanism, William L. Portier
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This essay begins with a four-part overview of American Catholic history focused on the building and dissolution of an immigrant Catholic subculture. The final period, “Catholics and the Dynamics of Pluralism (1968-present)” leads naturally into a discussion of the demography of Catholics in the United States. Particular attention is given to the trend to disaffiliation among millennials and how best to interpret it. Pastoral and theological reflections on the demography of disaffiliation emphasize the need for the church in the United States to take on an evangelical form more suited to a pluralism that is post-denominational and post-Americanist, and how …

Good Hair, Bad Hair, Dominican Hair, Haitian Hair, Katie E. Saunders
Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology
The goal of this research is to build on the literature concerning presentation practices of racial and national identity. The research examines presentation practices of race and national identity among Haitian heritage residents of the Dominican Republic (DR). Haitian immigrants have been an important part of the Dominican economy and the Dominican way of life since the beginning of the 20th century. Their descendants have to manage between Haitian and Dominican identities, while under the incredible pressure of anti-Haitian prejudices. The current literature concerning Dominican presentation practices asserts that normative presentation practices hide racial blackness. However, more recent literature questions …
Psychosocial Development Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Higher Education, Kathleen M. Vanderveen
Psychosocial Development Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Higher Education, Kathleen M. Vanderveen
Dissertations
Students, in general, are not graduating from college in percentages above 60% after five years (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2012). According to the National Council on Disability (NCOD, 2007), more students with disabilities are enrolling in higher education every year; but their graduation rates are declining (Getzel, 2008; NCOD, 2007; Orr & Goodman, 2010; Troiano, Liefeld, & Trachtenberg, 2010). Exploring ways to improve the retention and success of students with disabilities in college, leads to the review of psychosocial student development theory, which has guided student support for many years, but has not been widely applied to students with disabilities. …

Dissertations - ALL
An investigation of the structural and vibrational information of organic, hybrid organometallic and inorganic species was conducted using solid-state density functional theory (DFT). In this work the solid state DFT modeling was accomplished using the CRYSTAL09 code to simulate the geometries and vibrational modes of a variety of systems. These studies included: (1) the investigation of three polymorphs of vanadium phosphate, (2) three studies involving the use of 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole, and lastly (3) the crystal structure and simulation of α,α,α’,α’-tetrabromo-p-xylene. The studies involving 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole are comprised of (a) the comparison of a new polymorph to previously published crystallographic information of the …

Impact Of Plug In Electric Vehicle Battery Charging On A Distribution System Based On Real-Time Digital Simulator, Abdulelah Yousef Alharbi
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates the impact of the electric vehicles (EVs’) battery charging on the distribution system in terms of maximum voltage deviation, voltage unbalance at various locations, transformers overloading, and introducing new peaks into the system. In this research, a 12.47 kV real distribution network has been modeled using real time digital simulator, using real data from a power distributor. The study presents four different scenarios of uncoordinated EVs integration for two different charging times (evening and night) and two different charging rates (level I and level II) at different penetration levels ranging from 10% to 100%. Voltage unbalance at …
Extension Of A High-Order Petrov-Galerkin Implementation Applied To Non-Radiating And Radar Cross Section Geometries, William L. Shoemake
Extension Of A High-Order Petrov-Galerkin Implementation Applied To Non-Radiating And Radar Cross Section Geometries, William L. Shoemake
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Capabilities of a high-order Petrov-Galerkin solver are expanded to include N-port systems. Tait-Bryan angles are employed to launch electro-magnetic waves in arbitrary directions allowing off axis ports to be driven. The transverse-electric (TE) formulation is added allowing waveguide geometries to be driven directly. A grid convergence study is performed on a coax-driven waveguide system. Physical data are matched to a hybrid-T junction (magic-T) electromagnetic waveguide structure to verify the TE driving formulation along with the Tait-Bryan angles and modified post-processing routines. A simple sphere case is used to exercise the radar cross section (RCS) routines and to examine the benefits …
Heat Of Combustion Of Algae For Use In A Diesel Engine, Cassia Diane Davis
Heat Of Combustion Of Algae For Use In A Diesel Engine, Cassia Diane Davis
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
With nearly a quarter of the world’s population living without any access to electricity or modern energy, strategies for providing energy are very important. While the use of fossil fuels can bring the much needed energy to these areas they come with a host of problems. Fossil fuel use contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and ocean acidification. In many areas fossil fuels have to be transported in. The subsequent transmission and distribution can be difficult especially in rural areas. Dependence on fossil fuels also leaves the user vulnerable to disruption in deliveries and price fluctuations. While there are …
Physics-Based Point Placement By Particle Dynamics Simulation, Philip Wesley Fackler
Physics-Based Point Placement By Particle Dynamics Simulation, Philip Wesley Fackler
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A physics-based approach to point cloud distribution for mesh generation is investigated using inter-nodal attraction and repulsion forces based on the Lennard-Jones pair potential and a simplified particle dynamics simulation. This method produces smooth distributions of points which accurately correspond to desired scalar spacing fields. Resulting point distributions are triangulated using Lawson's algorithm and the quality of these resulting meshes is measured, demonstrating the effectiveness of the approach. Several features planned for future development for increasing the robustness and versatility of the proposed method are discussed.

Still Siblings: The Perceived Importance Of Sibling Relationships For Foster Children, Jessica A. Church
Masters Theses
This research was conducted to answer the question “Do children who are perceived to have strong relationships with siblings and more access to their siblings have fewer problems adjusting to their foster care placement as observed by child welfare professionals?” This qualitative research project was completed through semi-structured interviews with professionals who work with children in foster care in a variety of ways (and may have worked with children in more than one way during their career in child welfare), such as foster care workers, counselors, and sibling visitation supervisors. The snowball sampling method was used in this research. These …
Stratigraphic Controls On Diagenetic Pathways In The St. Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin, Stephen A. Zdan
Stratigraphic Controls On Diagenetic Pathways In The St. Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin, Stephen A. Zdan
Masters Theses
The Middle Ordovician St. Peter Sandstone in the Michigan Basin is a target for hydrocarbon exploration/production, and carbon sequestration and geologic storage. The St. Peter is predominantly a marine sandstone with four dominant lithofacies. The uppermost facies contains zones of porosity and good reservoir quality. Because of the mostly uniform detrital composition, diagenesis must play a leading role in reservoir quality development. This study tests stratigraphic controls on diagenesis and reservoir quality development. The distribution of diagenetic regimes is believed to result from depositional setting and related geologic processes, including variations in sediment accumulation rate. Early carbonate cements preserve pre-compaction …
Income Shifting Among Option Intensive Firms In The 1990'S, Christopher Becker
Income Shifting Among Option Intensive Firms In The 1990'S, Christopher Becker
Dissertations
One way a multinational corporation can further satisfy its primary objective, which is to maximize shareholder wealth, is to minimize the share of its income that is transferred through taxation to the various sovereign nations within which it does business. The profit maximizing firm attempts to maximize (minimize) taxable income in those jurisdictions where income tax burdens are the least (most) in such a way as to diminish the present value of its global total tax burden. While the US corporate income tax rate has remained relatively stable over the decades since most US income tax rates were last slashed …

The purpose of this mixed method study was to better understand undergraduate students' perceptions of international teaching assistants (ITAs) at a major research institution. For the purpose of this inquiry data were collected from surveying a sample of 436 of undergraduate students from different colleges and at different class levels. Survey data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Through the qualitative analysis of the open-ended survey data, undergraduate students' perceptions were derived from their responses, which resulted in themes both established in previous research (e.g., language), and original ideas (e.g., learning to understand ITAs language). Qualitative analysis of the survey …
The Effect Of The Missouri Safe School Act Of 1997 On Alternative Education Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Randall Gene Rhodes
The Effect Of The Missouri Safe School Act Of 1997 On Alternative Education Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Randall Gene Rhodes
Dissertations
Because of a perceived increase in school related violence, a political reaction occurred in Missouri that led in 1997 to the Missouri Safe Schools Act. This new law significantly changed school disciplinary policy and allowed administrators to move large groups of students to alternative education programs, or expel them to the streets. The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn from students who attended at least one year in an alternative education program about their experiences. I interviewed 26 former students and another 14 former students entered into the conversation by posting their thoughts on a Facebook site for …
The Evolution Of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems As An It Innovation: A Performative Perspective, Adrian Yeow, Wee-Kiat Lim
The Evolution Of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems As An It Innovation: A Performative Perspective, Adrian Yeow, Wee-Kiat Lim
CCX Research
How can we improve theorizing on IT innovation? We first draw on theories from IS research and science and technology studies (STS) to explain IT innovation. By showing how limited these research streams can be because they have not accounted for the act of theorizing itself, we next turn to the theory of performativity as a candidate theory to extend our understanding of IT innovation. We use an exemplar of IT innovation, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, to develop a performative perspective of the IT innovation process. Based on our preliminary data collection and analysis, we surfaced the role of …

Making The Most Of Teachable Moments: Livening And Enhancing The Virtual Reference Experience, Heidi Steiner
Making The Most Of Teachable Moments: Livening And Enhancing The Virtual Reference Experience, Heidi Steiner
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011
This presentation will address the undeniable presence of instructional opportunities in reference interactions. From small teachable moments to impromptu instruction sessions at the reference desk, reference is instruction and virtual reference is no exception. In virtual reference exchanges, however, these moments can be far more challenging to harness and engage. Due to barriers of time, communication, and technology between librarian and patron, virtual reference interactions frequently must be approached differently than those occurring in person. The overarching challenge of providing visual demonstration during teachable moments of virtual reference interactions will be emphasized.
Despite the barriers between librarian and patron in …

Teaching With Worldcat Local: What's Different?, Margaret G. Grotti, Karen Sobel
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011
This presentation discusses a recent study examining how WorldCat Local impacts library instruction. WorldCat Local is a library catalog discovery layer offered by OCLC. It has proven popular with academic libraries since its initial launch in 2008. This system is not merely a more flexible catalog interface, however; rather, it provides users with simplified search capabilities and access to multiple types of resources such as articles drawn from databases as well as catalog records drawn from an OPAC. Thus, WorldCat Local can be characterized as a meta-search system. Meta-search systems have long been at the center of a debate in …

Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Measurements Of Dealloyed Porous Nicu, Kyla Koboski, Evan Nelsen, Jennifer R. Hampton
Faculty Publications
Porous metals are of interest for their high surface area and potential for enhanced catalytic behavior. Electrodeposited NiCu thin films with a range of compositions were electrochemically dealloyed to selectively remove the Cu component. The film structure, composition, and reactivity of these samples were characterized both before and after the dealloying step using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The catalytic behavior of the dealloyed porous Ni samples towards the hydrogen evolution reaction was measured and compared to that of the as-deposited samples. The dealloyed samples were generally more reactive than their as-deposited counterparts at low overpotentials, making …

Likening In The Book Of Mormon: A Look At Joseph M. Spencer's An Other Testament: On Typology, Alan Goff
BYU Studies
Doctrine and Covenants section 84 places Latter-day Saints under condemnation "until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon" (D&C 84:55-57). From the beginning of the Restoration, neglect of the Book of Mormon has been a hallmark of both those who accept and reject it. Before the 1980s, Latter-day Saint readings were often characterized by summary, with little or no exegetical analysis. Readings by Book of Mormon critics were similarly superficial, dismissing the book as not worthy of their attention. The value of capable and close readings of the scripture became more apparent with the work …

Rube Goldberg Machines: Essays In Mormon Theology, Adam S. Miller, Thomas F. Rogers
BYU Studies
Philosopher Adam S. Miller, who teaches at Collin College in McKinney, Texas, and presently serves as director of the prestigious Mormon Theology Seminar, has written a small book that deserves big attention.
In his thoughtful preface, historian Richard L. Bushman asserts that "Adam Miller is the most original and provocative Latter-day Saint theologian practicing today" and that, like other philosophers and theologians, his writings reflect his possible doubt that his subject "can be reduced to a rational orderly system." But, for me, there is immense continuity to the book's fourteen essays, each of which interfaces with the restored gospel in …

Banishing The Cross: The Emergence Of A Mormon Taboo, Michael G. Reed, Alonzo L. Gaskill
BYU Studies
This first book by Michael G. Reed is a revamp of his 2009 master's thesis, "The Development of the LDS Church's Attitude toward the Cross" (California State University, Sacramento). In this current work, Reed beefs up his text with some additional sources and graphics, and he adds a chapter on the cross as a symbol in the Strangite and Community of Christ (RLDS) traditions.
The book's aim is to delineate the place of the cross as a symbol in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in the two aforementioned Restoration churches, though the book largely focuses on …
