Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Mankind must cooperate to reduce GHG emissions to prevent a catastrophic rise in global temperature. How can the necessary costs of reducing GHG emissions be allocated across regions of the world, within the next few generations, and simultaneously address growth expectations and economic development? We postulate a two-region world and, based on sustainability and egalitarian criteria, calculate optimal paths in which a South, like China, and a North, like the United States, converge in welfare per capita to a path of sustained growth of 1% per year by 2080, while global CO2 emissions are restricted to the Representative Concentration Pathway …
Truthful Equilibria In Dynamic Bayesian Games, Johannes Hörner, Satoru Takahashi, Nicolas Vieille
Truthful Equilibria In Dynamic Bayesian Games, Johannes Hörner, Satoru Takahashi, Nicolas Vieille
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper characterizes an equilibrium payoff subset for Markovian games with private information as discounting vanishes. Monitoring is imperfect, transitions may depend on actions, types be correlated and values interdependent. The focus is on equilibria in which players report truthfully. The characterization generalizes that for repeated games, reducing the analysis to static Bayesian games with transfers. With correlated types, results from mechanism design apply, yielding a folk theorem. With independent private values, the restriction to truthful equilibria is without loss, except for the punishment level; if players withhold their information during punishment-like phases, a “folk” theorem obtains also.
Structural Characterization Of Super-Acid Oligomerized Fatty Esters., Esam Allehyani
Structural Characterization Of Super-Acid Oligomerized Fatty Esters., Esam Allehyani
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Fatty acid methyl esters can be oligomerized with very strong acid catalysts - superacids such as tetrafluoroboric or triflic acid with formation of dimer and trimer fatty acids at much lower temperature, such as 80-90 °C, than what is used presently. Insight into the reaction of polymerization of fatty esters/ acids can be obtained by structural characterization. This would determine the properties of the oligomeric products and their ability to substitute currently used materials. It was presumed that dimer fatty, trimer fatty acid esters, and oligomeric fatty acid esters are produced by polymerization of fatty acid methyl esters by a …

Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters And Metal Thiophosphates As Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson, John E. Hils
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Phosphate esters, thiophosphate esters and metal thiophosphates have been used as lubricant additives for over 50 years. While their use has been extensive, a detailed knowledge of how they work has been a much more recent development. In this paper, the use of phosphate esters and thiophosphate esters as anti-wear or extreme pressure additives is reviewed with an emphasis on their mechanism of action. The review includes the use of alkyl phosphates, triaryl phosphates and metal containing thiophosphate esters. The mechanisms of these materials interacting with a range of iron and steel based bearing material are examined.
Membrane-Protein Dynamics: New Perspectives In Fcepsilonri Signaling Through Single Particle Tracking, Patrick J. Cutler
Membrane-Protein Dynamics: New Perspectives In Fcepsilonri Signaling Through Single Particle Tracking, Patrick J. Cutler
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Under physiological conditions IgE binds to its high affinity receptor, FcεRI. The aggregation of IgE-FcεRI by crosslinker initiates intracellular signaling resulting in the release of histamines and other cellular mediators that are the basis for allergic disease. In the field of IgE-FcεRI, receptor immobilization was thought to trigger signaling. Recent single particle tracking (SPT) experiments presented evidence supporting the hypothesis that small mobile aggregates are signaling competent. SPT is an important method for investigating spatio-temporal relationships at the subcellular level. New SPT tools are necessary to adequately investigate this hypothesis. The studies presented here both develop and apply tools for …
Safety Of Botulinum Toxin For Dysphagia In Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy, Sarah Youssof
Safety Of Botulinum Toxin For Dysphagia In Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy, Sarah Youssof
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Despite multiple studies reporting marked benefit of botulinum toxin (BTX) for treatment of cricopharyngeal dysphagia, little is known about its safety for this indication. We examined the safety of cricopharyngeal BTX for dysphagia in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). We reviewed records of patients with OPMD who received cricopharyngeal BTX. Twenty-four patients underwent 66 procedures. Overall adverse event frequency was 44%. The most common adverse events were dysphonia (24%) and worsened dysphagia (14%). Logistic regression demonstrated that dose was a significant predictor of worsened dysphagia (P=0.036) and of the composite event of dysphonia or worsened dysphagia (P=0.009). There was a non-significant …

Utah Red Raspberry Jam: The Effects Of Formulation, Heating, And Time On Color, Flavor, Texture, And Antioxidant Capacity, Jennifer Leigh Chase
Theses and Dissertations
The amount and type of antioxidants present in raspberries is dependent upon cultivar, ripeness, and growing conditions. Previous research on raspberry jam has reported some color, antioxidant, and flavor loss after processing and storage, though it is unknown to what extent similar changes will occur in raspberries grown in Utah. Sugar concentration and heating temperature as well as storage time were evaluated in an effort to maximize color retention, flavor, antioxidant content, shelf life, and consumer acceptance of Utah-grown raspberry jam. Four types of jams were processed in two batches each: low-sugar (40-42 Brix) and typical sugar (65-68 Brix) at …

We provide a framework for one-shot quantum rate distortion coding, in which the goal is to determine the minimum number of qubits required to compress quantum information as a function of the probability that the distortion incurred upon decompression exceeds some specified level. We obtain a one-shot characterization of the minimum qubit compression size for an entanglement-assisted quantum rate-distortion code in terms of the smooth max-information, a quantity previously employed in the one-shot quantum reverse Shannon theorem. Next, we show how this characterization converges to the known expression for the entanglement-assisted quantum rate distortion function for asymptotically many copies of …

The architect commonly looks at the products of his work, he acts and experiments upon them, while the processes that allowed him to reach those results usually do not get much attention. Thus, this discussion seeks to focus on the procedures to schedule its development and act with greater awareness to ultimately improve them. Research builds a platform for the exercise of a discipline based on self-criticism, interpretation and the cyclic path, on a qualitative methodological framework that allows addressing research from the expertise that architects naturally develop through training and practice. Apart from how far or near research and …

Level Statistics Of The Spherical Mean-Field Plus Pairing Model, Feng Pan, Xin Guan, Kristina D. Launey, Jianzhong Gu, Jerry P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
The level statistics of the spherical mean-field plus pairing model is investigated based on the exact solutions obtained from the extended Heine-Stieltjes correspondence. It is shown that the level statistics for 49Ca and 50Ca calculated from the model with single-particle energies and a pairing strength extracted from experimental data indeed exhibits a chaotic behavior within the phase transitional region, while most isotopes display regular spectra. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.

Social Regulation Of Male Reproductive Plasticity In An African Cichlid Fish, Karen P. Maruska, Russell D. Fernald
Social Regulation Of Male Reproductive Plasticity In An African Cichlid Fish, Karen P. Maruska, Russell D. Fernald
Faculty Publications
Social interactions with the outcome of a position in a dominance hierarchy can have profound effects on reproductive behavior and physiology, requiring animals to integrate environmental information with their internal physiological state; but how is salient information from the animal's dynamic social environment transformed into adaptive behavioral, physiological, and molecular-level changes? The African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, is ideally suited to understand socially controlled reproductive plasticity because activity of the male reproductive (brainpituitary gonad) axis is tightly linked to social status. Males form hierarchies in which a small percentage of brightly colored dominant individuals have an active reproductive axis, defend …

Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of stretching pH on technological parameters and physicochemical and texture characteristics of the pasta filata cheese Telita. A no-brine cheese-making method was used to control both melting and stretching temperatures. Six vats of cheese, each with a different stretching pH (5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, and 5.7), were made in 2. h. Cheese-making was replicated using 2 different lots of milk. Differences in stretching pH significantly affected all variables evaluated; stretching temperature and pH were positively correlated. Technological parameters showed an inverse relationship between pH and acidity and a direct …

Background: Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) is an important disease vector and biting nuisance. During the 2009 active season, six ∼1000-parcel sites were studied, three in urban and three in suburban areas of New Jersey, United States, to examine the efficacy of standard integrated urban mosquito control strategies applied area wide. Active source reduction, larviciding, adulticiding and public education (source reduction through education) were implemented in one site in each county, an education-only approach was developed in a second site and a third site was used as an untreated experimental control. Populations were surveyed weekly with BG-Sentinel traps and ovitraps. Results: …

Fipronil is a widely used insecticide for termite control. Although transfer of fipronil among termite cohorts has been investigated in previous studies, no study has yet focused on the influence of termite group size (density) on horizontal transfer. In this study, the mortality of donor and recipient Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) was compared among groups of 10, 25, and 50 workers. Most donor termites were dead within 20 h. There was a significantly higher mortality of recipient termites starting at 44 h when in bigger groups. LT50 and LT90 of recipient termites decreased with increase in group size, being …

Cytokinesis, the terminal event in the canonical cell cycle, physically separates daughter cells following mitosis. For cleavage to occur in many eukaryotes, a cytokinetic ring must assemble and constrict between divided genomes. Although dozens of different molecules localize to and participate within the cytokinetic ring, the core machinery comprises linear actin filaments. Accordingly, formins, which nucleate and elongate F-actin (filamentous actin) for the cytokinetic ring, are required for cytokinesis in diverse species. In the present article, we discuss specific modes of formin-based actin regulation during cell division and highlight emerging mechanisms and questions on this topic. © 2013 Biochemical Society.

The King Rail Rallus elegans (Audubon) has experienced population declines of 4.6 % per year on average since the 1960s. Wetland loss, most severely affecting inland marshes, has significantly reduced this species' distribution to the coastal margins of its historic range. Polymorphic microsatellite markers were generated by 454 pyrosequencing of genomic DNA from King Rails, and Clapper Rails R. longirostris from Louisiana after AFLP enrichment and barcoding of restriction fragment cut sites across individuals. Of 1,419 microsatellite-containing sequences, 20 hypervariable microsatellite loci with up to 20 different alleles were identified at the alignment stage. We characterized nine loci, tested variability …

Ramanujan's Master Theorem For The Hypergeometric Fourier Transform Associated With Root Systems, G. Ólafsson, A. Pasquale
Faculty Publications
Ramanujan's Master theorem states that, under suitable conditions, the Mellin transform of an alternating power series provides an interpolation formula for the coefficients of this series. Ramanujan applied this theorem to compute several definite integrals and power series, which explains why it is referred to as the "Master Theorem". In this paper we prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master theorem for the hypergeometric Fourier transform associated with root systems. This theorem generalizes to arbitrary positive multiplicity functions the results previously proven by the same authors for the spherical Fourier transform on semisimple Riemannian symmetric spaces. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media …

We evaluated the accuracy of an Accutrend® lactate meter and a Reichert® Vet 360 temperature compensated refractometer for determining red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) hemolymph lactate and protein concentrations, with results compared to measurements obtained from spectrophotometric analyses. Results from the lactate meter (R2 = 0.926) and refractometer (R2 = 0.830) both demonstrated strong relationships with spectrophotometer measurements, indicating that these instruments provide rapid, reliable, and economical methods for determining crayfish hemolymph lactate and protein concentrations. Both meters can provide on-site information to commercial crayfish farmers and processors to assess crayfish health and stress levels, and can also …

Knowledge of the diversity and relationships of species in many groups of plants and animals in Southeast Asia is severely limited, preventing an integrative understanding of evolutionary and ecological processes in island archipelagos. We generated a 3-locus DNA sequence data set to estimate phylogenetic relationships among species and populations of Maxomys, a genus of rodents endemic to Southeast Asia. Our inclusion of Crunomys as a potential outgroup supported the monophyly of Crunomys, but the genus was deeply nested within Maxomys. Because of the relatively ancient divergences (mean uncorrected p-distances up to 0.15 in cytochrome-b sequences) among species of Maxomys and …
