Nd–Fe–B Nanoparticles Through Surfactant Assisted Mechanical Milling And Alloy Design, Jordann M. Bornhoft Dec 2013

Nd–Fe–B Nanoparticles Through Surfactant Assisted Mechanical Milling And Alloy Design, Jordann M. Bornhoft

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Surfactant-assisted mechanical milling has been used to produce discrete nanoparticles of both Nd-Fe-B and Sm-Co amenable for bottom-up production of nanostructured or nanocomposite permanent magnets. However, in Nd-Fe-B the comminution of the material proceeds by transgranular fracture, which influences both the morphology of the nanoparticles and the magnetic properties. This paper utilizes alloy design to alter the fracture behavior from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture. Nd-rich Nd2Fe14B alloys were produced by melt spinning in an overquenched state. The melt spun ribbons were annealed at 700°C and 800°C to ensure complete crystallization and to form different grain …

A Comparison Of Evidence Fusion Rules For Situation Recognition In Sensor-Based Environments, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye Dec 2013

A Comparison Of Evidence Fusion Rules For Situation Recognition In Sensor-Based Environments, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye

Conference papers

Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory, and its associated Dempster rule of combination, has been widely used to determine belief based on uncertain evi-dence sources. Variations to the original Dempster rule of combination have appeared in the literature to support particular scenarios where unreliable results may result from the use of original DS theory. While theoretical explanations of the rule variations are explained, there is a lack of empirical comparisons of the DS theory and its variations against real data sets. In this work, we examine several variations to DS theory. Using two real-world sensor data sets, we com-pare the performance of DS …

Sublimation Rate Of Vertically Oriented Naphthalene Cylinders In A Natural Convection Environment, Lauren Raye Carley Dec 2013

Sublimation Rate Of Vertically Oriented Naphthalene Cylinders In A Natural Convection Environment, Lauren Raye Carley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The naphthalene sublimation technique was used to determine the rate of mass transfer from three solid naphthalene cylinders in a natural convection environment. The cylinders’ diameters measured 1, 1.5, and 2 inches nominally, and sublimation rates were found to be 1.42 x 10 -8, 1.89 x 10-8, and 2.28 x 10 -8 kg/s, respectively. The mass transfer coefficients were determined to be 1.64 x 10-3, 1.45 x 10-3, and 1.31 x 10 -3 respectively. Correlations were developed for the Sherwood vs. Rayleigh numbers, Sherwood vs. Grashof numbers, and mass transfer coefficient vs. diameter.

This dissertation presents the design and implementation of EmoAssist: "Emotion-Enabled Assistive Tool to Enhance Dyadic Conversation for the Blind". The key functionalities of the system are to recognize behavioral expressions and to predict 3-D affective dimensions from visual cues and to provide audio feedback to the visually impaired in a natural environment. Prior to describing the EmoAssist, this dissertation identifies and advances research challenges in the analysis of the facial features and their temporal dynamics with Epistemic Mental States in dyadic conversation. A number of statistical analyses and simulations were performed to get the answer of important research questions about …

Improvement Of Dynamic Performance Of The Grid Connected Photovoltaic (Pv) System By Series Compensating Devices, Md Kamal Hossain Dec 2013

Improvement Of Dynamic Performance Of The Grid Connected Photovoltaic (Pv) System By Series Compensating Devices, Md Kamal Hossain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study proposes the bridge type fault current limiter (BFCL) and series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) methodologies to enhance the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of the PV plant during network faults. This work also focuses on smoothing out the PV power fluctuation due to variable irradiance. To achieve this, the output power of diversely located identical and small PV plants, instead of a big PV plant in a certain area, is integrated. Simulations performed through the Matlab/Simulink software shows that the terminal voltage obtained from the proposed protection schemes maintains the grid code, and hence the PV systems …

Propensity Score Methods In Estimating Conditional Hazard Ratio, Wen Feng Dec 2013

Propensity Score Methods In Estimating Conditional Hazard Ratio, Wen Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Various simulations have been done to demonstrate how propensity score methods perform in estimating mean difference, proportion, odds ratio and marginal hazard ratio, however, few rigorous simulations have been done to evaluate the performance. We conduct an extensive series of simulations to demonstrate the performance of propensity score methods in estimating conditional hazard ratio. For each propensity method, we characterize the conditions to 7 propensity score scenarios, each contains a different set of variables. For each scenario, we apply four propensity methods to estimate conditional hazard ratio. Meanwhile, we also use multivariate Cox model (conventional Cox model) to estimate conditional …

Infant Volubility Across Circumstance Estimated From All-Day Recordings, Barbara S. Franklin Dec 2013

Infant Volubility Across Circumstance Estimated From All-Day Recordings, Barbara S. Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

By analyzing infant volubility we may illuminate early communication development and aid early identification of disorders. LENA recordings provide a naturalistic method for gathering data all-day and yield automated labeling of speakers including the infant wearing the device. In Study 1, 10 six-month-old infants were studied for volubility in a naturalistic setting analyzed by LENA and a human coder using a traditional repeat-listening method based on a single all-day recording for each infant. Twelve randomly selected 5-minute segments (excluding presumed sleep) were coded for vocal type (vocants, squeals, and growls). This allowed for estimation of six-month-old infant vocal rate across …

The Moderating Effect Of Employee Age On The Association Between Affective Commitment And Human Resource Practices, Michael Mark Mackay Dec 2013

The Moderating Effect Of Employee Age On The Association Between Affective Commitment And Human Resource Practices, Michael Mark Mackay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Drawing hypotheses from a theory of lifespan development called selective optimization with compensation (SOC, Baltes & Baltes, 1990; Baltes, Staudinger, & Lindenberger, 1999), the study explored the degree to which employee age moderates the relationship between employee affective commitment and satisfaction with various high commitment human resource practices (HCHRPs; e.g., providing training, opportunity for advancement, work/life balance). In addition, as exploratory hypotheses, the study also tested whether other employee-level variables such as gender, job tenure, and job type also serve as moderators of the HCHRP-affective commitment relationship. Customer-facing employees (N = 6,360) representing three job types (O*NET titles: Shipping, Receiving, …

Surface Micromachined Electrolyte-Cavities For Use In Micro-Aluminum Galvanic Cells, Andres M. Cardenas-Valencia, Jay Dlutowski, Melynda C. Calves, John Bumgarner, Larry Langebrake

USF Patents

The present invention is directed to the fabrication of thin aluminum anode batteries using a highly reproducible process that enables high volume manufacturing of the galvanic cells. In the present invention, semiconductor fabrication methods are used to fabricate aluminum galvanic cells, wherein a catalytic material to be used as the cathode is deposited on a substrate and an insulating spacing material is deposited on the cathode and patterned using photolithography. The spacing material can either be used as a sacrificial layer to expose the electrodes or serve as a support for one of the electrodes. Similarly, the aluminum anode may …
