Microcavity Raman Sensor And Method Of Use, Nicholas Djeu, Andreas Muller
USF Patents
In accordance with the present invention, an ultra-sensitive Raman chemical sensor is provided that is based on an enhanced spontaneous emission as a result of cavity quantum electrodynamic effects. More specifically, the sensor in accordance with the present invention makes use of a double resonance of a microcavity with both the excitation laser frequency and the Raman frequency. As such, the Raman shift corresponds to an integer times the free spectral range of the microcavity. Because the Raman frequency directly depends on the excitation laser's frequency, the fulfillment of the resonance condition for the excitation laser frequency guarantees that resonance …

An Efficiently Preconditioned Eigenanalysis Of Inhomogeneously Loaded Rectangular Cavities, Qi I. Dai, Yat Hei Lo, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this letter, we demonstrate an efficient preconditioning scheme for the eigenanalysis of inhomogeneously loaded rectangular cavities. Modeling the entire structure with the finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method yields a large sparse eigenvalue problem. The desired interior eigen-spectrum is sought for by Arnoldi iterations with the shift-and-invert operation, where the inversion can only be performed iteratively in large-scale applications. A preconditioner is constructed to speed up the inversion. It can effectively shrink the spectrum of the governing matrix and can be solved for by using fast discrete sine and cosine transforms (DSTs and DCTs). Several numerical examples are included to illustrate …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
In the woods south of Wilmington, men in blue uniforms moved forward in a loose skirmish line. They were probing, trying to find General Hoke's last line of defense. Brig. General Charles Paine sent the men forward to develop the enemy. But in the pine thicket ahead, in a thin, ragged line, the bedraggled rebel troops likely had more to fear than bullets as those skirmishers probed and prodded on a February day in 1865. [excerpt]
On Relay Node Placement Problem For Survivable Wireless Sensor Networks, Changyong Jung
On Relay Node Placement Problem For Survivable Wireless Sensor Networks, Changyong Jung
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks are widely applied to many fields such as animal habitat monitoring, air traffic control, and health monitoring. One of the current problems with wireless sensor networks is the ability to overcome communication failures due to hardware failure, distributing sensors in an uneven geographic area, or unexpected obstacles between sensors. One common solution to overcome this problem is to place a minimum number of relay nodes among sensors so that the communication among sensors is guaranteed. This is called Relay Node Placement Problem (RNP). This problem has been proved as NP-hard for a simple connected graph. Therefore, many …
