Nikolai Medtner's Fairy Tales As Shakespearean Adaptation, Alicia Wodarski

Honors Projects

Though in the past the piano music of the early twentieth century Russian composer Nikolai Medtner had been largely forgotten, there has been a recent trend among some U. S. pianists to bring his pieces into the popular canon. Contemporary pianists have particularly focused on his works known as the Skazki, or “Fairy Tales,” of which Medtner wrote several sets. Medtner’s fairytales are of the programmatic genre; they invoke connections outside of the music itself. While Medtner’s pieces have received attention due to their musical qualities, there has not been much research regarding their place as a musical form of …

In completion of my Honors Project, I created Brighter Connections Theatre (BCT). This program was designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) ages 8 to 14 years old. BCT ran for six weeks this past summer in Dayton, OH and had a total of seven participants. Four of these children and their parents agreed to be research participants. My team of volunteers and I documented the progress made by these research participants in certain social and behavioral areas through the process of drama therapy. The 20th century was a period of turmoil for the people of Ireland. After fighting for independence in the first quarter of the century, Ireland was partitioned into two separate entities, the Irish-controlled Republic of Ireland in the South and the British-controlled Northern Ireland in the Northeast. The middle half of the century saw bloody violence and sectarian fighting between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the various Unionist paramilitary forces in Northern Ireland. This paper looks at the period from 1970 to 2000, and evaluates how and why the bloody sectarian conflict shifted into a partially more peaceful political …

Chinese American communities have been part of the United States since the 19th century. Presently, their high rates of immigration have made them one of this country’s fastest growing communities. However, in Miami, only 0.3% of the population are Chinese Americans. In this local setting, music serves, in the words of Su Zheng, as an important “signifier that produces complex cultural meanings.” Because traditional music forms one of the most significant aspects of music in China, it is critical to explore the extent to which Chinese American musical culture has developed and changed. Adult Learning And Development Theories And Principles Represented In Theater, Jeffrey Miele

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate how adult learning and development theories and principles are represented in theater. The study also investigated if there was significant evidence to support the idea of using dramatic works as an example to illustrate adult learning and development theories and principles as an educational tool. Ten plays were analyzed along with an accompanying rubric that the evaluator completed while reading the plays. The rubric searched for information if adults and/or educators were present in the text, how andragogy and barriers were presented, along with other theories and principles.
