European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco
European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "European Comparative Literature as Humanism" Bernard Franco presents an epistemological reflection on comparative literature in the context of the evolution of the relationships between different forms of knowledge. Franco argues that in the late nineteenth century the notion of the "humanities" replaced that of the "human sciences," but that we have recently returned to a humanist concept of knowledge linked to ethics. Franco focuses on the origins of this critical reflection about the nature of knowledge and on the debate in the Romantic period between rational and non-rational forms of knowledge. The idéologues (Cabanis, Destutt de Tracy, …

Generative Translation In Spicer, Gelman, And Hawkey, Lisa Rose Bradford
Generative Translation In Spicer, Gelman, And Hawkey, Lisa Rose Bradford
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Generative Translation in Spicer, Gelman, and Hawkey" Lisa Rose Bradford examines the practice of generative translation — a concept she designated — in Jack Spicer's After Lorca (1957), Juan Gelman's Com/positions (1986), and Christian Hawkey's Ventrakl (2010) to show how this strategy revives the original articulation as a continuation of the seminal frisson while producing an entirely new work of art and one that reflects the genius of both the original and translating authors. While generative translation represents a renovative strategy that has provided historically a constant creative force in literature, in recent years it has established …

Artaud, Barney, And The Total Work Of Art From Avant-Garde To The Posthuman, Matteo Colombi, Massimo Fusillo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Artaud, Barney, and the Total Work of Art from Avant-Garde to the Posthuman" Matteo Colombi and Massimo Fusillo discuss the aesthetics of Matthew Barney's video-performance art and the theater of Antonin Artaud. Colombi and Fusillo highlight the characteristics of the posthuman: the rejection of Western anthropocentrism and its subversion through hybridization with human, animal, and mechanical elements, the incorporation of Dionysian imagery of the body, and a commitment to the idea of the total work of art in its blending of different artistic mediums, and indeed, of art and life. Using examples from Artaud's writings on theater, …

Tip Apex Distance As A Predicting Factor For The Outcome Of Femoral Intertrochanteric Fracture Fixed By Dynamic Hip Screw, Firas Abd Alhadi Al-Obidi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Dynamic hip screw is still one of the most widely used devices for the fixation of femoral intertrochanteric fractures. A recognized complication with this device is the screw cut-out from the femoral head. OBJECTIVE: Of this study is to assess if the tip apex distance is a reliable predicting factor for the subsequent lag screw position and so the outcome of femoral intertrochanteric fractures fixed by dynamic hip screws. Design of the study: Prospective Cohort Study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 42 patients (27 female, 15 male), with an average age of 63 years, (ranging from 55 to 72 years),with …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I will detail the film making techniques that my crew and I employed while making AM800, my thesis film at the University of New Orleans. I will detail the creative and technical steps we took, from the earliest stages of idea conceptualization to the final phases of post-production and screening. During my recounting of this process, I will discuss our creative goals, the challenges that we faced while achieving these goals, and the resulting product's effectiveness as a narrative short film. The quality of the final product will be gauged through the results of test screenings …

The Good Killing, Alex F. Aaron
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper will provide a far-ranging analysis of the relevant aspects of the filmmaking process as it pertains to the development and production of the thesis project, The Good Killing. This analysis will include both a detailed, biographic overview of the making of the film, as well as an in-depth critique of the creative decision-making and practical methodology that guided the production. In this regard, special attention will be first be given to how the project was initially conceived, and, broadly speaking, what was originally intended. Secondly, proceeding sections will examine key elements of the filmmaker’s technical planning, performance, …

The Burgos Tapestry: Medieval Theatre And Visual Experience, Nathalie Rochel Frch '11
The Burgos Tapestry: Medieval Theatre And Visual Experience, Nathalie Rochel Frch '11
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
In the field of art history, the medium of tapestry has only recently begun to gain attention as its own significant art form. This paper examines the possible relationship between the Burgos Tapestry, recently on view at The Cloisters after a thirty-year conservation, and medieval theatre. The compositional and stylistic forms of the tapestry may have been influenced by productions of medieval mystery plays, which through analysis can help provide a greater understanding of the medieval cultural mindset, the possible artistic decisions behind maintaining medieval pictorial traditions into the early sixteenth century, and the medieval viewer’s experience when looking at …
