Physical Activity For African American Females : Salience Of Race, Gender-Role, And Exercise Identities, Jasmine M. Hamilton Jan 2013

Physical Activity For African American Females : Salience Of Race, Gender-Role, And Exercise Identities, Jasmine M. Hamilton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Social identity theory explores the process of self-identifications based upon perceived shared commonalities with others in order to positively affiliate with group membership and accounts for inter-group and intra-group behaviors (Deaux, 2001; Hogg & Abrams, 1999; Tajfel, 1982). Social identity is also dependent upon environment and situation dynamics (Turner, 1982). African American females are at risk for high levels of physical inactivity. Researchers have suggested the use of frameworks that move investigations beyond assessing social aggregates such as race and gender to understand why this is true. Racial identity, gender-role identity, and exercise identity (derived from social identity theory) provide …

Musical Achievement And Attitude Of Beginning Piano Students In A Synchronous Videoconferencing Lesson Environment, Rebecca Carter Bellelo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of an online synchronous lesson environment on beginning piano students’ musical achievement, time spent in target behaviors across the study period, and attitude toward piano lessons. Beginning piano students (N = 19) between ages 6-9 with no prior private music instruction served as participants, receiving 30-minute weekly lessons throughout a 7-month period. Participants were grouped into one of the two lesson groups: a face-to-face traditional lesson group or distance lesson group. Pre-treatment assessments included a beginner readiness assessment and online attitudinal survey. The post-treatment musical achievement tasks (a prepared performance …

An Original Composition, "...And It Was Good For Orchestra" And A New Century, A New Audience : Concert Music's Evolution Into Pop And The Music Producer As Maestro, Matthew David Evancho

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The first part of this dissertation is a musical composition for full orchestra titled, ...And It Was Good. The work's title refers to the biblical text that follows each day of God's creation, "God saw all that he had made, and it was good." The architecture for the single movement work is framed within seven sections, each representing a different day of the biblical creation story. An arch form is used and each section is marked by a different tonal center taken from a whole tone scale beginning on F. The composer employs several songs from various world religions and …

Pain In The Everyday: Torture And Imprisonment In The Works Of Harold Pinter, Kacey Gill Davis Jan 2013

Pain In The Everyday: Torture And Imprisonment In The Works Of Harold Pinter, Kacey Gill Davis

All ETDs from UAB

The focus of this research is to investigate the influence of torture on the development of Harold Pinter's plays throughout his career. Although torture has a strong presence in Pinter's more political works, there has been little scholarship in examining this same presence in his earlier plays such as The Dumb Waiter, The Birthday Party, and The Homecoming. By reading these works with the processes of torture and power structures as defined by Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain as well as Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish, the otherwise comedic interactions in the initial plays become something far more sinister …

Coagulation Monitoring Devices: Past, Present, And Future At The Point Of Care, Leanne F. Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Tony J. Killard Jan 2013

Coagulation Monitoring Devices: Past, Present, And Future At The Point Of Care, Leanne F. Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Tony J. Killard

Articles

Automated technologies have revolutionised the monitoring of coagulation disorders in the central hospital laboratory setting, allowing for high throughput testing, improved accuracy and precision, accompanied by a marked reduction in human error. However, they still require trained operators and sample transportation. With the advent of point of care (POC) testing, the working principle of traditional coagulometers was used as the foundation for the development of miniaturised devices. A number of POC coagulation devices have been commercially available for many years now, allowing the patient to assume more control over the management of their own medication, e.g. warfarin. While POC devices …
