Reproduction And Functional Response Of Cornus Florida Across An Urban Landscape Gradient, Angela Redwine
Reproduction And Functional Response Of Cornus Florida Across An Urban Landscape Gradient, Angela Redwine
Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization greatly alters plant and pollinator communities and can affect pollinator movement and subsequent gene flow. Plants persisting in urban areas must adjust to local environmental conditions often different from those in which they naturally evolved, and cultivation techniques for landscaping species have developed traits suitable for existence in urban habitats. Cultivated varieties and native conspecifics often exist in geographic proximity, and if pollinator movement is not blocked by urban structural components, functional differences may negatively impact spatially proximate native populations. I used spatial analysis of successful pollination of Cornus florida to estimate how pollinator movement is affected by urban …
The Effects Of Sleep Problems And Depression On Alcohol-Related Negative Consequences Among College Students, Mcgann Amanda Wattenmaker
The Effects Of Sleep Problems And Depression On Alcohol-Related Negative Consequences Among College Students, Mcgann Amanda Wattenmaker
Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature provides an overview of the multiple relationships between alcohol use, protective behavioral strategies (PBS), alcohol-related negative consequences, depression, and sleep problems among college students, as well as differences by individual level characteristics, such as age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Several studies have found that specific demographic groups of students are more likely to reach a higher blood alcohol content (BAC) when “partying” or socializing (Turner, Bauerle, & Shu, 2004; Crotty, 2011). A variety of studies have also confirmed the positive relationship between high blood alcohol content and experiencing alcohol-related negative consequences (Turner, et al., 2004; Martens, Taylor, Damann, Page, …

Approximate String Matching By Position Restricted Alignment, Manish Patil, Xuanting Cai, Sharma V. Thankachan, Rahul Shah, Seung Jong Park, David Foltz
Approximate String Matching By Position Restricted Alignment, Manish Patil, Xuanting Cai, Sharma V. Thankachan, Rahul Shah, Seung Jong Park, David Foltz
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Given a collection of strings, goal of the approximate string matching is to efficiently find the strings in the collection that are similar to a query string. In this paper, we focus on edit distance as measure to quantify the similarity between two strings. Existing q-gram based methods to address this problem use inverted indexes to index the q-grams of given string collection. These methods begin by generating the q-grams of query string (disjoint or overlapping) and then merge the inverted lists of these q-grams. Several filtering techniques have been proposed so as to segment inverted lists to relatively shorter …

Balin Phd, Denah M. Appelt, Justin H. Schripsema, Christopher L. Smith, Kyle Ramsey, Christopher Scott Little
Research Day
Previous research indicates BALB/c mice inoculated with Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) demonstrated AD-like pathology which suggests that this mouse model is valid for studying the pathogenesis implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Studies have demonstrated that Chlamydia trachomatis (Ctr) can disseminate from its primary site of infection and plays a major role in the induction of reactive arthritis. The objectives of this lab are: (1) to identify and localize Chlamydia antigens in the brains of BALB/c mice infected with C. muridarum and (2) to determine if infection with C. muridarum induces AD-like pathology comparable to Cpn. Using mouse adapted respiratory isolates …
The Role Of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (Enos) Uncoupling In Acute Hyperglycemia – Induced Oxidative Stress And Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction By Measuring Blood Nitric Oxide And Hydrogen Peroxide In Real-Time, Matthew Bertolet, Michael Minni, Robert J. Barsotti, Lindon H. Young, Qian Chen
The Role Of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (Enos) Uncoupling In Acute Hyperglycemia – Induced Oxidative Stress And Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction By Measuring Blood Nitric Oxide And Hydrogen Peroxide In Real-Time, Matthew Bertolet, Michael Minni, Robert J. Barsotti, Lindon H. Young, Qian Chen
Research Day
Acute hyperglycemia can impair vascular endothelial function in non-diabetic subjects in addition to diabetic patients. Decreased eNOS derived nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide (SO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are the major characteristics of vascular endothelial dysfunction. Furthermore, eNOS can change from coupled to an uncoupled status resulting in SO production instead of NO production. The role of eNOS uncoupling in acute hyperglycemia induced vascular dysfunction is unclear in vivo. In this study we hypothesized that acute hyperglycemia (200 mg/dL) would increase H2O2 and decrease NO …

Mapping The Interaction Of Talin:Riam Complex In Inside-Out Integrin Activation Pathway, Tejash T. Patel, Yu-‐Chung Chang, Hao Zhang, Jinhua Wu
Research Day
Integrin signaling plays important roles in numerous biological processes including maintenance of normal cellular function and essential homeostasis. In addition, integrin signaling is also involved in the metastasis of cancer cells by changes in normal cell adhesion and migration regulation. Studies have shown that Rap1-interacting adaptor molecule (RIAM), an MRL-family protein, recruits the cytoskeletal protein talin to the plasma membrane, thereby mediating the inside-out integrin signaling. The R8 domain of talin has been identified as the RIAM binding site. Recent knock-out studies have shown that talin does not translocate to the plasma membrane without RIAM recruitment. The goal of this …

Research Day
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation is increasingly recognized to influence the penetrance of complex diseases and climatic adaptation in mammals, although little is known about its influence on invertebrate species’ adaptation to unique geographic niches. We investigated whether natural variation in mtDNA-encoded respiratory chain subunits alters the inherent mitochondrial energy capacity of wild C. elegans isolates to match local environmental energy demands. We found that relative to the classic N2 Bristol (England) wild-type strain, CB4856 wild isolates from a warmer and more equatorial native climate (Hawaii) had a unique A12S amino acid substitution in the N-terminal string of the COX-1 …

Causes As Powers: Book Symposium On Stephen Mumford And Rani Lill Anjum, Getting Causes From Powers, Jennifer Mckitrick, Anna Marmodoro, Stephen Mumford, Rani Lill Anjum
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Mumford and Anjum’s Getting Causes from Powers is an ambitious and original contribution to the literature on causation, a welcome departure from Humean approaches which reductively analyze causation in terms of regularities or counterfactual conditionals. The authors develop an account of causation as the exercising of powers, a view they call “causal dispositionalism.” This critique of Getting Causes from Powers is organized around its central heuristic—the vector model of causation. On this model, vectors represent the exercising of powers, those that are operating upon a quality space. A quality space is a background against which events can occur, where two …

Each spring, the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera) awakens from its winter slumber to wreak havoc on corn crops across the United States. The pest emerges in larval form, hatching from small white eggs deposited beneath the soil and causing significant feeding damage to the grain crop’s roots. The toll on U.S. farmers: an estimated $1-2 billion annually in yield losses and chemical control.
European growers face a similar threat from the pest, which was first reported in a corn field near the Belgrade international airport in Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) in 1992, but is presumed to have arrived …

Performance Verification For Behavior-Based Robot Missions, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald Arkin, Shu Jiang, Tsung-Ming Liu, Paramesh Nirmal, J. Deeb
Faculty Publications
Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical en-vironment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. This requirement raises many issues for existing approaches to software verification. An approach based on behavior-based controllers in a process-algebra framework is proposed by Lyons et al [15] to side-step state combinatorics. In this paper we show that this approach can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the problem, and that verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. We present validation results for the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this approach.

Mmp-3 Mediates Psychosine-Induced Globoid Cell Formation: Implications For Leukodystrophy Pathology, Kumiko Ijichi, Graham D. Brown, Craig S. Moore, Paige N. Winokur, Roberto Pagarigan, Stephen J. Crocker
UCHC Articles - Research
Globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) or Krabbe disease, is a fatal demyelinating disease attributed to mutations in the galactocerebrosidase (GALC) gene. Loss of function mutations in GALC result in accumulation of the glycolipid intermediate, galactosylsphingosine (psychosine). Due to the cytotoxicity of psychosine, it has been hypothesized that accumulated psychosine underlie the pathophysiology of GLD. However, the cellular mechanisms of GLD pathophysiology remain unclear. Globoid cells, multinucleated microglia/macrophages in the central nervous system (CNS), are a defining characteristic of GLD. Here we report that exposure of primary glial cultures to psychosine induces the expression and the production of matrix metalloproteinase …

Iron And Cancer: More Ore To Be Mined, Suzy V. Torti, Frank M. Torti
UCHC Articles - Research
Iron is an essential nutrient that facilitates cell proliferation and growth. However, iron also has the capacity to engage in redox cycling and free radical formation. Therefore, iron can contribute to both tumour initiation and tumour growth; recent work has also shown that iron has a role in the tumour microenvironment and in metastasis. Pathways of iron acquisition, efflux, storage and regulation are all perturbed in cancer, suggesting that reprogramming of iron metabolism is a central aspect of tumour cell survival. Signalling through hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and WNT pathways may contribute to altered iron metabolism in cancer. Targeting iron metabolic …

Fluctuating Viability Selection On Morphology Of Cliff Swallows Is Driven By Climate, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Erin A. Roche
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The extent to which fluctuating selection can maintain evolutionary stasis in most populations remains an unresolved question in evolutionary biology. Climate has been hypothesized to drive reversals in the direction of selection among different time periods and may also be responsible for intense episodic selection caused by rare weather events. We measured viability selection associated with morphological traits in cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) in western Nebraska, USA, over a 14-year period following a rare climatic event. We used mark-recapture to estimate the annual apparent survival of over 26 000 individuals whose wing, tail, tarsus, and bill had been …
