Reverse-Phase Ion-Pairing Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry In Characterization And Fingerprinting Of Diverse Sulfated Glycosaminoglycan Mimetics, Pooja Ponnusamy
Theses and Dissertations
Heparin is a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan with potent anticoagulant, antimetastatic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Polymeric and polyanionic nature of heparin makes dosing and side effects a nightmare for healthcare professionals. Our laboratory has proposed appropriately designed, small, highly sulfated aromatic molecules as potential mimetics of heparin. These easier-to-synthesize small molecules have been shown to possess interesting pharmacological and improved toxicological profiles. However, the detection and characterization of these highly sulfated molecules is challenging. A robust RP-IP UPLC-MS method was developed to successfully retain, resolve and quantify sulfated non-saccharide GAG mimetics without the requirement of pre- or post- column derivatization. Comparative analysis …
Regularities In The Augmentation Of Fractional Factorial Designs, Lisa Kessel
Regularities In The Augmentation Of Fractional Factorial Designs, Lisa Kessel
Theses and Dissertations
Two-level factorial experiments are widely used in experimental design because they are simple to construct and interpret while also being efficient. However, full factorial designs for many factors can quickly become inefficient, time consuming, or expensive and therefore fractional factorial designs are sometimes preferable since they provide information on effects of interest and can be performed in fewer experimental runs. The disadvantage of using these designs is that when using fewer experimental runs, information about effects of interest is sometimes lost. Although there are methods for selecting fractional designs so that the number of runs is minimized while the amount …
Tissue Engineering Composite Biomimetic Gelatin Sponges For Bone Regeneration, Isaac Rodriguez
Tissue Engineering Composite Biomimetic Gelatin Sponges For Bone Regeneration, Isaac Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
The field of tissue engineering aims to develop viable substitutes with the ability to repair and regenerate the functions of damaged tissue. Common practices to supplement bone regeneration in larger defects include bone graft biomaterials such as autografts, allografts, xenografts, and synthetic biomaterials. Autologous bone grafting is the current gold-standard procedure used to replace missing or damaged bone. However, these grafts have disadvantages such as donor site morbidity, limited availability, and the need for a secondary surgery. The focus of this study is to tissue engineer a lyophilized gelatin composite sponge composed of hydroxyapatite (HA), chitin whiskers (CW), and preparations …

A Study Of The Niche Structure And Habitat Utilization Of Urban Dwelling Winter Birds, Thomas Huff
A Study Of The Niche Structure And Habitat Utilization Of Urban Dwelling Winter Birds, Thomas Huff
Honors Theses
A study was conducted to evaluate the distribution of urban birds relative to differences in habitat as determined by zoning type. A total of 1,948 individual birds and a total of 33 species were sampled across the four different zones (industrial, commercial, residential, and public use.) The industrial use zone contained the highest number of individuals whereas commercial zones contained the fewest. However, the four zones contained approximately equal species richness.
Industrial zones supported the greatest number of cavity nesting and seed eating species. Residential and public use zones contained greater numbers of insectivorous and cup nesting species. In the …

Fda And The Rise Of The Empowered Consumer, Lewis Grossman
Fda And The Rise Of The Empowered Consumer, Lewis Grossman
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This Article traces the still-evolving view of consumers of FDA-regulated products as capable, rational, and rights-bearing decision makers. It also examines the corresponding diminution of FDA’s role as a paternalistic gatekeeper collaborating with medical and scientific experts to prevent products and manufacturer-provided information from reaching the public. Compared with their 1960s counterparts, today’s consumers of food and drugs have far greater freedom to make unmediated choices among a wider variety of products, guided by a relative deluge of labeling and advertising information. Moreover, food and drug regulation, once the exclusive domain of bureaucrats and experts, has become a focus of …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Surface modification, particularly coatings deposition, is beneficial to tissue-engineering applications. In this work, bioactive glass/zirconium titanate composite thin films were prepared by a sol-gel spin-coating method. The surface features of the coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and spectroscopic reflection analyses. The results show that uniform and sound multilayer thin films were successfully prepared through the optimization of the process variables and the application of carboxymethyl cellulose as a dispersing agent. Also, it was found that the thickness and roughness of the multilayer coatings increase nonlinearly with increasing the number of the layers. This new class …
Women Of The Scientific Revolution: The Forgotten Scholars, Sema Hasan
Women Of The Scientific Revolution: The Forgotten Scholars, Sema Hasan
Young Historians Conference
Many people today are familiar with the achievements of famous scientists such as Galileo or Newton, but little is known about the scientific contributions that were made by women. Throughout history the world of academia was dominated by men, but it was during the Scientific Revolution that opportunity arose for women to participate in the sciences. In a time when women faced prejudice and skepticism, some managed to break away from the set expectations and enter into a career of their own. This paper offers a look into the lives of women scientists who have been dis-remembered by history.

Biomimetic Robots At War: The Ethical Ramifications Of American Military-Industrial Complex, Nina Kostur
Young Historians Conference
This paper discusses the correlation between the American military-industrial complex and the application of robotics over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. The military-industrial complex has encouraged scientists to spend time developing weaponry and reconnaissance devices designed to hurt other human beings rather than investing in machines that have to potential to provide humanitarian aid. This has caused the application of robotics to become unethical.

Acclimation of plants with an abiotic stress can impart tolerance to some biotic stresses. Such a priming response has not been widely studied. In particular, little is known about enhanced defense capacity of drought stress acclimated plants to fungal and bacterial pathogens. Here we show that prior drought acclimation in Nicotiana benthamiana plants imparts tolerance to necrotrophic fungus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and also to hemi-biotrophic bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. S. sclerotiorum inoculation on N. benthamiana plants acclimated with drought stress lead to less disease-induced cell death compared to non-acclimated plants. Furthermore, inoculation of P. syringae pv. tabaci on N. …

The HIV transactivator protein, Tat, enhances HIV transcription by recruiting P-TEFb from the inactive 7SK snRNP complex and directing it to proviral elongation complexes. To test the hypothesis that T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling induces critical post-translational modifications leading to enhanced interactions between P-TEFb and Tat, we employed affinity purification-tandem mass spectrometry to analyze P-TEFb. TCR or phorbal ester (PMA) signaling strongly induced phosphorylation of the CDK9 kinase at Ser175. Molecular modeling studies based on the Tat/P-TEFb X-ray structure suggested that pSer175 strengthens the intermolecular interactions between CDK9 and Tat. Mutations in Ser175 confirm that this residue could mediate critical interactions …

In contrast to generally sparse biological communities in open-ocean settings, seamounts and ridges are perceived as areas of elevated productivity and biodiversity capable of supporting commercial fisheries. We investigated the origin of this apparent biological enhancement over a segment of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) using sonar, corers, trawls, traps, and a remotely operated vehicle to survey habitat, biomass, and biodiversity. Satellite remote sensing provided information on flow patterns, thermal fronts, and primary production, while sediment traps measured export flux during 2007–2010. The MAR, 3,704,404 km2 in area, accounts for 44.7% lower bathyal habitat (800–3500 m depth) in the …

Testing The Role Of Meander Cutoff In Promoting Gene Flow Across A Riverine Barrier In Ground Skinks (Scincella Lateralis), Nathan D. Jackson, Christopher C. Austin
Faculty Publications
Despite considerable attention, the long-term impact of rivers on species diversification remains uncertain. Meander loop cutoff (MLC) is one river phenomenon that may compromise a river's diversifying effects by passively transferring organisms from one side of the river to the other. However, the ability of MLC to promote gene flow across rivers has not been demonstrated empirically. Here, we test several predictions of MLC-mediated gene flow in populations of North American ground skinks (Scincella lateralis) separated by a well-established riverine barrier, the Mississippi River: 1) individuals collected from within meander cutoffs should be more closely related to individuals across the …

Friendship As A Relationship Infiltration Tactic During Human Mate Poaching: An Experimental Investigation, Justin Kyle Mogilski
Master’s Theses
Previous research has characterized human mate poaching as a prevalent alternative mating strategy that entails risks and costs typically not present during general romantic courtship and attraction. This study is the first to experimentally investigate friendship between a poacher and poachee as a risk mitigation tactic. Participants (N = 382) read a vignette that differed by whether the poacher was male/female and whether the poacher and poachee were friends/acquaintances. Participants assessed the likelihood of the poacher being successful and incurring costs. They also rated the poacher and poachee on several personality and mate characteristics. Results revealed that friendship increased the …

Photosynthetic Solar Cells Using Chlorophyll And The Applications Towards Energy Sustainability, Lucas J. Hoerner
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
As the population increases exponentially so does the need for a greater demand of energy. Even though renewable energy sources are available, humans still receive almost 60% of energy from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. Solar energy has been seen as a very promising method of energy collection for electrical use for some time now. The common silica solar cell design has been altered in many ways over the years. The main goal is to improve the absorption and conversion of sunlight into usable energy. The majority of current photosynthetic solar cells make use of non-renewable components. These materials …

The Development And Applications Of The Hint Scoring Function: Exploring Colchicine-Site Anticancer Agents And Tautomerism, Chenxiao Da
Theses and Dissertations
The overall aim of this work was to apply HINT, an empirical scoring function based on the understanding of hydrophobicity, to analyze and predict the binding affinities and biological activities of colchicine-site anticancer agents. The second, concurrent aim was to improve the scoring function by incorporating tautomerism within the modeling process. Our belief is that proper evaluation of tautomeric forms for small molecules will improve performance of virtual screening. The novel pyrrole-based compounds targeting the colchicine site were docked into the receptor using HINT as a rescoring function. Two distinct binding modes dictated by the size and shape of a …

A Comparison Of Rectangular Vs. Circular Radiographic Collimation During Simulated Endodontic Therapy, Tareq Alali
Theses and Dissertations
Rectangular collimation is used in dentistry to reduce radiation by restricting the x-ray beam to approximately the size of a number 2 intraoral film (3.2X4.1 cm). However, this restricted beam size can lead to exposure errors. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the number of radiographs exposed and the presence of technical errors by the use of traditional circular or rectangular collimators during endodontic therapy on simulated teeth in manikins. A total of 1475 digital radiographs of 84 teeth exposed by 60 dental students were evaluated. Evaluation was done by a board certified endodontist, an endodontic resident, …

Microbial Evaluation Of The Calamus Heated Gutta-Percha Delivery System, Christopher Smart Dds
Theses and Dissertations
If gutta-percha cartridges are contaminated with bacteria prior to obturation then contamination of the root canal system may result. Successful treatment not only depends on bacterial elimination but also depends on prevention of recontamination. This study was motivated by the observation that endodontists frequently use single use gutta-percha cartridges on multiple patients. The goal of this study was to determine if cross contamination occurred when a single gutta-percha cartridge in the Calamus™ Flow System was used on multiple patients. An effective recovery method was established during a pilot study using Enterococcus faecalis as a sample bacterium. Microbial recovery was obtained …
