The Violence Of Post-Racial Memory And The Political Sense Of Mourning, Alfred Frankowski

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In this paper I argue that “post-raciality” entails a way of remembering that depoliticizes the social meaning of memory and thus of history. Through aesthetic critique, I attempt to show how the hyper-production of memory obscures the very real forms of violence directed toward non-whites. By developing the aesthetic critiques of W.E.B. Du Bois and Walter Benjamin, I argue that representing former violence as social memory fails to adequately address subtle forms of cultural and residual violence. Furthermore, I argue that post-racial memory produces sites and representations of the past only to enact a type of social forgetting in the …

Disgust about material objects and moral behavior are both at issue in understanding pornography. Previous debates were fueled primarily by moral disgust. Erotic art may elicit moral disgust, but only hard-core pornography elicits material disgust. I discuss the role of attraction and aversion in labeling artworks pornographic. Since we always have a choice between acknowledging and ignoring a disgust elicitor, aversion may be a necessary, but not a sufficient condition for such a label. In submitting our choice to rational critique, we must ask: what do we accept as a consequence of the claim that that x is disgusting? Relying …

A time-frequency contour extraction and classification algorithm was created to analyze humpback whale vocalizations. The algorithm automatically extracted contours of whale vocalization units by searching for gray-level discontinuities in the spectrogram images. The unit-to-unit similarity was quantified by cross-correlating the contour lines. A library of distinctive humpback units was then generated by applying an unsupervised, cluster-based learning algorithm. The purpose of this study was to provide a fast and automated feature selection tool to describe the vocal signatures of animal groups. This approach could benefit a variety of applications such as species description, identification, and evolution of song structures. The …

A taxonomic revision of the genus Oxytropis DC. (Leguminosae) in Turkey is presented. According to the recent literature, the genus had 13 taxa in Turkey; however, at the end of our studies the number was reduced to 11. It was determined that Oxytropis engizekensis Duman & Vural is a synonym of O. persica Boiss., and O. fominii Grossh. is a synonym of O. argyroleuca Bornm. The soil properties of the annual Gypsophila L. taxa of Turkey and their effects on plant morphology were investigated. The taxa studied were Gypsophila heteropoda Freyn & Sint., G. parva Barkoudah, G. elegans M.Bieb., G. bitlisensis Barkoudah, G. viscosa Murray, G. antari Post & Beauverd, G. muralis L., G. tubulosa (Jaub. & Spach) Boiss., G. confertifolia Hub.-Mor., and G. pilosa Hudson. The phytosociological properties of the forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation of Kızıldağ (Isparta province) were investigated in 2010 and 2011. The vegetation of the area was analysed using a 3-dimensional ordination technique based on the Braun-Blanquet method. As a result, 5 new plant associations were determined as belonging to forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation and classified syntaxonomically. The associations and their higher units are as follows. The bark structure of Quercus faginea Lam. in trees 30-60 years old grown in Portugal is described. The rhytidome consists of 3-5 sequential periderms alternating with secondary phloem. The phellem is composed of 2-5 layers of cells with thin suberised walls and narrow (1-3 seriate) tangential band of lignified thick-walled cells. The phelloderm is thin (2-3 seriate). Secondary phloem is formed by a few tangential bands of fibres alternating with bands of sieve elements and axial parenchyma. Formation of conspicuous sclereids and the dilatation growth (proliferation and enlargement of parenchyma cells) affect the bark structure. Fused phloem rays give rise …

Seed-Coat Microsculpturing Of Turkish Lepidium (Brassicaceae) And Its Systematic Application, Mehmet Bona

This article investigates the seed exomorphic characteristics of 14 taxa of Lepidium L. in Brassicaceae by light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The exomorphic characteristics of the seed are size, seed shape, seed colour, seed wings, and seed surface pattern. All characteristics of the seeds are described, illustrated, and compared in this article. The results of SEM at higher magnification showed 6 types of seed surface patterns: tuberculate, reticulate, ruminate, reticulate-tuberculate, reticulate-areolate, and reticulate-fovate. In these seed surface patterns, there were diagnostic characteristics and differences at the specific level for Lepidium.

The main aim of this study was to compare Grime's strategies in 91 plant taxa occurring from the eastern to the western part of the central Black Sea region of northern Turkey (Samsun). To do this, 45 sample plots were taken from different community types (from swamp forests to halophytic communities), and the strategies of plant species were compared with each other. Litter production and its decomposition is a major source of nutrients for mangrove ecosystems. This study was conducted on a naturally growing mangrove population in the Sandspit area in Karachi, Pakistan, during 2007 and 2008. Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. forms an almost pure population in Sandspit mangrove swamps. To examine the details of temporal fluctuation in litter accumulation and its decomposition, observations were taken at monthly intervals. The new species Inula tuzgoluensis M.Öztürk & O.Çetin (Asteraceae) is described from Central Turkey. The species grows on salty marshes, in the Cihanbeyli District of Konya Province. Inula tuzgoluensis, an endemic confined to Central Anatolia, is related to I. aucheriana DC. The new species is distinct from the closely allied I. aucheriana by habitus, indumentums, leaves, flowers, pollen grains, and achenes. Photos of the new species are provided. A total of 85 lichen taxa from the Sarısu area of the district of Kandıra in Kocaeli Province were listed. Three new records for the biota of Turkey, Coenogonium pineti (Ach.) Lücking & Lumbsch, Lecania cuprea (A.Massal.) Van den Boom & Coppins, and Opegrapha calcarea Turner ex Sm., have been identified within the context of this study along with 81 new taxa for the province of Kocaeli.

Seseli L. is represented by 12 taxa (species and subspecies) in the Flora of Turkey. On the basis of morphological examination and field investigation, we have revised the genus Seseli in Turkey. The following are provided for each taxon: a description, along with the complete synonymy and notes on nomenclature, geographical distribution, habitat, IUCN conservation status assessment, and selected materials examined. Salt-affected soils with high electrolyte contents limit the development of the majority of plants and serve as a habitat only for such species (halophytes) that can survive the conditions. To date, there is still much that is unknown about the physiological mechanisms, including ion relationships, that make plants salt-resistant. Impaired lipid metabolism at rest has been linked to the development of insulin resistance and an attenuation of plasma concentration of the hormone adiponectin. However, it has been suggested that increasing fatty acid oxidation at rest, via exercise or otherwise, may augment plasma adiponectin. Peptidomimetic polymers are an emerging class of polymers that are structurally related to polypeptides. Due to their structural similarities, these polymers can be used to study some of the physical aspects of polypeptides (for example, protein folding). They are also increasingly being used in the fields of biology and drug-delivery. Some members of peptidomimetic polymers include polyacrylamides, polyoxazolines and polypeptoids. Polymer synthesis and characterization has been performed for both polyacrylamides and polyoxazolines, with research dating back to the 1950s and 1980s respectively.
