The Scientific Evidence Validating The Use Of Honey As A Medicinal Agent, Raitzel Chemda Bernstein Jan 2013

The Scientific Evidence Validating The Use Of Honey As A Medicinal Agent, Raitzel Chemda Bernstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Honey has been used to treat wounds, infections, and other diseases since ancient times. Due to the widespread bacterial resistance to antibiotics, scientists have investigated the healing power of honey. Numerous studies have documented the broad-spectrum antibacterial effect of honey and its success in inhibiting MRSA. The use of honey as a wound dressing has proven to successfully heal chronic wounds in short amounts of time by inhibiting pathogens, reducing inflammation, rebuilding damaged tissue, and minimizing scarring. The mechanisms of action are directly related to the high hydrogen peroxide and rich polyphenol content present in honey. These two components account …

Cancer Immunotherapy Treatments, Shifra Sadowsky

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in American, with over half a million deaths from cancer reported in 2009. Cancer chemotherapy treatments were developed in the nineteen hundreds and remain the backbone of current treatments; however, they have some limitations. New immunotherapy cancer treatments, where biologic agents are given to patients to influence the body’s natural immune response, are being researched. Among these immunotherapy treatments are co-inhibition blockade of T cells, and combination blockade treatments together with chemotherapy treatment. This review will discuss T cell activation and the role of T cell coinhibitors such as CTLA-4 and PD-1 …

Alopecia Areata: An Overview, Chaya Gestetner Jan 2013

Alopecia Areata: An Overview, Chaya Gestetner

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

This review seeks to find the most efficient treatment for alopecia areata. Alopecia is not very well understood as demonstrated by the unsatisfactory treatment options. The author reviewed many studies with different treatment options and concluded that treatment with Diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP), a topical sensitizer, has the best results and that extensive research into the pathogenesis of alopecia areata is still necessary and may result in better treatment options for those afflicted with the disease.

The Pathogenesis And Treatment Of Gout, Daniel Silberstein Jan 2013

The Pathogenesis And Treatment Of Gout, Daniel Silberstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

In the past, the etiology of gout was simplistically believed to be based in the generous indulgence of rich foods and alcohol. However, research has revealed that gout has complex environmental and genetic origins. Specifically, researchers have begun to focus attention on the molecular basis of gout and its related features. These features include hyperuricemia, the stages of gout, and the decreased solubility of uric acid. Furthermore, with epidemiologic evidence indicating that the prevalence of gout is consistently rising, it is imperative that medical providers understand the research-based guidelines for treatment. This includes what medications to administer, monitoring for drug-induced …

Huntington's Disease And Its Effect On The Brain, Shaina Rivkin-Drizin Jan 2013

Huntington's Disease And Its Effect On The Brain, Shaina Rivkin-Drizin

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to gradual extensive brain damage, especially in the striatum and the cerebral cortex. Initial symptoms are cognitive difficulties, loss of motor contra and sudden mood imbalances. Cognitive function slowly declines into dementia, coupled with behavioral and psychiatric problems. Sufferers die within 20 years due to illness complications: a fall, pneumonia, or heart disease (Walker, 2007). This paper reviews the principle biological cause of the disease, its effect on the brain, diagnosis, and treatment.

Microparticle Function, Leorra Kohen Jan 2013

Microparticle Function, Leorra Kohen

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Microparticles are emerging as an integral part of the vascular system. The microparticles are derived from stimulated or apoptotic endothelial cells, platelets, and leukocytes. They are involved in coagulation and regular cell function. Excessive numbers of microparticles contribute to artherosclerosis, chronic renal failure, and metabolic syndrome. Microparticle levels may be reduced by medications, relieving symptoms for awhile. Studies are being done to predict disease by counting microparticles. Further research must be done to understand and make use of microparticles.

Selection And Clustering For Disease Associated Genetic Variants, Yubo Zou Jan 2013

Selection And Clustering For Disease Associated Genetic Variants, Yubo Zou

Theses and Dissertations

Epigenetics is the study of chemical reactions, which are orchestrated for the development and maintenance of an organism. Genetic or epigenetic variants (GEVs) encompass different types of genetic measures, such as Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation at different CpG sites, expression level of genes, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). With the development of technology, huge amount of genetic and epigenetic information is produced. However, the rich information potentially brings in challenges in data analyses. Thus it is necessary to reduce the dimension of data to improve efficiency. In my dissertation, I will focus on two directions of dimension reduction: variable selection …

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin Jan 2013

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Computational prediction of protein subcellular localization can greatly help to elucidate its functions. Despite the existence of dozens of protein localization prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy and coverage are still low. Several ensemble algorithms have been proposed to improve the prediction performance, which usually include as many as 10 or more individual localization algorithms. However, their performance is still limited by the running complexity and redundancy among individual prediction algorithms. In the first part of the dissertation, we propose a novel method for rational design of minimalist ensemble algorithms for practical genome-wide protein subcellular localization prediction. The algorithm is based …

Evading Innate And Adaptive Immunity During Adenovirus Cell Entry, Shauna Marvin Jan 2013

Evading Innate And Adaptive Immunity During Adenovirus Cell Entry, Shauna Marvin

Dissertations

Adenovirus (Ad), a non-enveloped, dsDNA virus, enters cells via clathrin-mediated endocytosis. For viral genome delivery to the nucleus, Ad must penetrate endosomal membranes to create defects sufficient for the passage of the 90 nm diameter capsid across cell membranes. Recent observations suggest that adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) capsid uncoating occurs at the cell surface upon binding to both the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor and αv integrins. This uncoating event leads to the exposure of the capsid membrane lytic protein VI. Using the cytosolic protein galectin-3 (gal3) as a marker of membrane rupture, we demonstrate that Ad5 membrane rupture occurs …

Reclaiming Hazelwood: Public School Classrooms And A Return To The Supreme Court's Vision For Viewpoint-Specific Speech Regulation Policy, Brad Dickens Jan 2013

Reclaiming Hazelwood: Public School Classrooms And A Return To The Supreme Court's Vision For Viewpoint-Specific Speech Regulation Policy, Brad Dickens

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Federal and circuit courts continue to fiercely debate whether the Supreme Court's 1988 ruling in Hazelwood v. Kuhineier requires school policies regulating student speech and expression to be viewpoint neutral. However, this note suggests that the language of Hazelwood itself shows that the Circuit debate may be misguided. The Supreme Court intended Hazelwood to stand as a narrow exception to its earlier holding in Tinker, and Hazelwood only applies in instances where the government's own voice is implicated, largely in a public context. When the school, and in effect the government, is speaking with its own voice, the school must …

Innovative Food Product Development Using Molecular Gastronomy: A Focus On Flavour And Sensory Evaluation, Mark Traynor

Doctoral

The primary goal of this research was to develop novel ice cream products using the principles of molecular gastronomy. An ice cream model system (emulsion) was developed, in which the effects of ingredient levels on stability and formation were investigated and optimised using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Two characteristic volatiles of banana (isoamyl acetate and furfuryl acetate) were added to the optimised emulsion, and their headspace emission was quantified using Solid Phase Microextraction with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry. RSM was used to investigate the main and interactive effects of ingredient, salt and pH levels on the headspace emission of these …

'Simple' Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert Tsai Jan 2013

'Simple' Takes On The Supreme Court, Robert Tsai

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This essay assesses black literature as a medium for working out popular understandings of America’s Constitution and laws. Starting in the 1940s, Langston Hughes’s fictional character, Jesse B. Semple, began appearing in the prominent black newspaper, the Chicago Defender. The figure affectionately known as “Simple” was undereducated, unsophisticated, and plain spoken - certainly to a fault according to prevailing standards of civility, race relations, and professional attainment. Butthese very traits, along with a gritty experience under Jim Crow, made him not only a sympathetic figure but also an armchair legal theorist. In a series of barroom conversations, Simple ably critiqued …

The Impact Of Interpersonal Communication On Breastfeeding, Jennifer Alarcon Jan 2013

The Impact Of Interpersonal Communication On Breastfeeding, Jennifer Alarcon

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The medical community has offered a lot of evidence in support of breastfeeding which has led to many of the leading medical associations (i.e. the American Academy of Pediatrics, World Health Organization) to recommend breastfeeding infants exclusively for the first six months of life and for at least a full year, up to two years or whatever is mutually desirable to mother and child. However, in the United States, many mothers do not follow this recommendation. Research shows that instances of women being unable to breastfeed exist but are minimal. Many people have attempted to address the problem of low …

The Impact Of Fear Of Falling On Functional Independence, Katherine Aileen Lawson Jan 2013

The Impact Of Fear Of Falling On Functional Independence, Katherine Aileen Lawson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Falls are the fifth leading cause of death for persons over the age of 55 (CDC, 2010). However, not all falls result in death. In 2006, 10.5% or 2.1 million visits to the emergency room were the result of older adults falling. Non-fatal falls have long-term effects that impact a person's well-being physically, financially, and emotionally. It is estimated that health care costs of non-fatal falls is expected to reach $54.9 billion by 2020 (Englander, Hodson & Terregrossa, 1996). Intrinsic and extrinsic fall risk factors have been identified for persons over the age of 65. Intrinsic fall risk factors …

The Strength Of Family Bonds: A Look Into The Lives Of A Family That Has Overcome Adversity And Marginality, Angelique Nevarez Maes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the recent literature that entails the effectiveness of parent/child bonds in deterring children from crime and related deviant activities, little information is mentioned about the effectiveness of Kinship (extended family members) and its possible effectiveness in deterring an individual from crime and related deviant activities. Adverse events such as drug abuse, early death, prostitution and gang activity can plague a family and threaten its unity when parental bonds are absent or non-consistent during adolescence. Marginalities such as poverty and racism take the family unit to the edge of society only serve to further the extent of the damage that …

International Polar Year (Ipy) Back To The Future (Btf): Changes In Arctic Ecosystem Structure Over Decadal Times Scales, Sandra Villarreal

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Arctic vegetation communities are responding to climate warming through shifts in species composition and diversity but most observations have been made over relatively short time frames, and/or in association with experimental manipulations. Because vegetation plays a key role in regulating ecosystem productivity, nutrient cycling, surface energy budgets, and trophic interactions in the Arctic, there is a need to better understand shifts in tundra vegetation communities over decadal time scales. Understanding these shifts and their impact on ecosystem structure and function in the Arctic has important implications for predicting the future state of both the Arctic and the Earth System. Long …
