Genetic Diversity In Populations Of Epiphanes Chihuahuaensis (Rotifera: Monogononta) In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Diego E. Reyes Jan 2013

Genetic Diversity In Populations Of Epiphanes Chihuahuaensis (Rotifera: Monogononta) In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Diego E. Reyes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

1. Cryptic speciation in zooplankton is a phenomenon that has been recently gaining much attention. This is due in part to advances in molecular techniques which help in the identification of morphologically indistinct species. Organisms that have been traditionally believed to have cosmopolitan distributions are being found to be composed of cryptic species complexes with high levels of genetic divergence among lineages.

2. Epiphanes chihuahuaensis is a member in the Epiphanes senta species complex. In a previous study by Schröder & Walsh (2007), genetic data, along with morphological and reproductive isolation data were employed to help delineate four species within …

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Polymerization And Exonuclease Proofreading By A High-Fidelity Dna Polymerase During Translesion Dna Synthesis, Babho Devadoss, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis Jan 2013

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Polymerization And Exonuclease Proofreading By A High-Fidelity Dna Polymerase During Translesion Dna Synthesis, Babho Devadoss, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

High fidelity DNA polymerases maintain genomic fidelity through a series of kinetic steps that include nucleotide binding, conformational changes, phosphoryl transfer, polymerase translocation, and nucleotide excision. Developing a comprehensive understanding of how these steps are coordinated during correct and pro-mutagenic DNA synthesis has been hindered due to lack of spectroscopic nucleotides that function as efficient polymerase substrates. This report describes the application of a non-natural nucleotide designated 5-naphthyl-indole-2′-deoxyribose triphosphate which behaves as a fluorogenic substrate to monitor nucleotide incorporation and excision during the replication of normal DNA versus two distinct DNA lesions (cyclobutane thymine dimer and an abasic site). Transient …

A Biocompatible Sic Rf Antenna For In-Vivo Sensing Applications, Shamima Afroz Jan 2013

A Biocompatible Sic Rf Antenna For In-Vivo Sensing Applications, Shamima Afroz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A continuous glucose sensor employing radio frequency (RF) signals is presented using the biocompatible material Silicon Carbide (SiC). Unlike biosensors that require direct contact with interstitial fluids to trigger chemical reactions to operate, this biocompatible SiC sensor does not require a direct interface. The sensing mechanism for this SiC sensor is based upon a shift in resonant frequency, as a function of change in glucose levels, which electrically manifests itself as a change in blood permittivity and

conductivity. For in vivo applications the antenna sensor needs to operate inside the body environment, and it has been found that the best …

Efficient And Private Processing Of Analytical Queries In Scientific Datasets, Anand Kumar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Large amount of data is generated by applications used in basic-science research and development applications. The size of data introduces great challenges in storage, analysis and preserving privacy. This dissertation proposes novel techniques to efficiently analyze the data and reduce storage space requirements through a data compression technique while preserving privacy and providing data security.

We present an efficient technique to compute an analytical query called spatial distance histogram (SDH) using spatiotemporal properties of the data. Special spatiotemporal properties present in the data are exploited to process SDH efficiently on the fly. General purpose graphics processing units (GPGPU or just …

Resilience Governance Through Serious Energy Gaming, Adrian V. Gheorghe, Dan V. Vamanu Jan 2013

Resilience Governance Through Serious Energy Gaming, Adrian V. Gheorghe, Dan V. Vamanu

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Physical analogies emphasizing cooperative behavior in systems are explored and integrated into so called 'serious energy games', to contribute in a better understanding, monitoring and good governance of some of the complex security issues confronting the evolvement of contemporary energy systems. It is believed that such exercises might be supportive in the necessary attempt, by the many stakeholders and actors / agents involved, to bring balance to prevailing policies of which seems to be “Go change yourself - in a resilient fashion!” An extrapolation of several findings to other than energy systems tempted to implement drastic changes based on substantial …

Is Navigation In Virtual Reality With Fmri Really Navigation?, J.S. Taube, S. Valerio, Ryan M. Yoder

Psychology

Identifying the neural mechanisms underlying spatial orientation and navigation has long posed a challenge for researchers. Multiple approaches incorporating a variety of techniques and animal models have been used to address this issue. More recently, virtual navigation has become a popular tool for understanding navigational processes. Although combining this technique with functional imaging can provide important information on many aspects of spatial navigation, it is important to recognize some of the limitations these techniques have for gaining a complete understanding of the neural mechanisms of navigation. Foremost among these is that, when participants perform a virtual navigation task in a …

Disclosure Of Hiv Status To Children In Resource-Limited Settings: A Systematic Review, Rachel C. Vreeman, Anna Maria Gramelspacher, Peter Gisore, Michael L. Scanlon, Winstone M. Nyandiko

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Introduction: Informing children of their own HIV status is an important aspect of long-term disease management, yet there is little evidence of how and when this type of disclosure takes place in resource-limited settings and its impact.

Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Databases were searched for the terms hiv AND disclos* AND (child* OR adolesc*). We reviewed 934 article citations and the references of relevant articles to find articles describing disclosure to children and adolescents in resource-limited settings. Data were extracted regarding prevalence of disclosure, factors influencing disclosure, process of disclosure and impact of disclosure on children and caregivers.

An Experimental Testbed For Multi-Robot Tracking Of Manifolds And Coherent Structures In Flows, Matthew Michini, Kenneth Mallory, Dennis Larkin, M. Ani Hsieh, Eric Forgoston, Philip A. Yecko Jan 2013

An Experimental Testbed For Multi-Robot Tracking Of Manifolds And Coherent Structures In Flows, Matthew Michini, Kenneth Mallory, Dennis Larkin, M. Ani Hsieh, Eric Forgoston, Philip A. Yecko

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper, we describe the development of an experimental testbed capable of producing controllable ocean-like flows in a laboratory setting. The objective is to develop a testbed to evaluate multi-robot strategies for tracking manifolds and Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in the ocean. Recent theoretical results have shown that LCS coincide with minimum energy and minimum time optimal paths for autonomous vehicles in the ocean. Furthermore, knowledge of these structures enables the prediction and estimation of the underlying fluid dynamics. The testbed is a scaled flow tank capable of generating complex and controlled quasi-2D flow fields that exhibit wind-driven doublegyre …

Paid Organ Donations And The Constitutionality Of The National Organ Transplant Act, John A. Robertson Jan 2013

Paid Organ Donations And The Constitutionality Of The National Organ Transplant Act, John A. Robertson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Organ transplant is a well-established medical therapy that saves thousands of lives. Yet many people who could survive with transplants die on waiting lists. With ever expanding indications for transplant, the supply of organs will never meet demand. But many more organ transplants could occur than do.

Under the National Organ Transplant Act ("NOTA"), the United States government prohibits the use of money in any form of organ donation scheme. By making it a federal felony to provide valuable consideration for organ donations, many proposed organ brokerages and exchanges have not been allowed to come to fruition. Valuable consideration includes …

Bans On Sex-Selective Abortions: How Far Is Too Far, Annie Moskovian Jan 2013

Bans On Sex-Selective Abortions: How Far Is Too Far, Annie Moskovian

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

"My mother in law always tells me I am useless because I do not have a son. If I do not have a son, she says, they will send me back to India." These words come from a qualitative study on son preference and fetal sex selection among Indian immigrants in the United States in which women expressed the pressure to have sons from in-laws and husbands. Census studies also indicate that many Chinese and Korean Americans terminate pregnancies if the fetus is of the undesired sex.

Further, studies imply that sex selection is not a practice that can be …

Essays On Fresh Vegetable Production And Marketing Practices, Michael Vassalos Jan 2013

Essays On Fresh Vegetable Production And Marketing Practices, Michael Vassalos

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Commercial fresh vegetable production is one of the most rewarding and risky farming activities. The price and yield variations throughout the production year, the special characteristics of fresh vegetable produce (i.e. perishability), and the changing consumer demands are some of the factors contributing to the increased uncertainty faced by vegetable producers. This dissertation combined mathematical programming and econometric techniques to: 1) investigate the optimal production and marketing practices under different price distribution information scenarios, risk aversion levels and marketing outlets and 2) examine growers’ preferences as well the effect of risk aversion levels and growers’ risk perception on the choice …

Slowing The Onset Of Hypoxia Increases Colony Forming Efficiency Of Connective Tissue Progenitor Cells In Vitro, Christopher M. Heylman, Tonya N. Caralla, Cynthia A. Boehm, Thomas E. Patterson, George F. Muschler Jan 2013

Slowing The Onset Of Hypoxia Increases Colony Forming Efficiency Of Connective Tissue Progenitor Cells In Vitro, Christopher M. Heylman, Tonya N. Caralla, Cynthia A. Boehm, Thomas E. Patterson, George F. Muschler

Biomedical Engineering

Background: Survival and colony formation by transplanted tissue derived connective tissue progenitor cells (CTPs) are thought to be important factors in the success of clinical tissue engineering strategies for bone regeneration. Transplantation of cells into defects larger than a few millimeters expose cells to a profoundly hypoxic environment. This study tested the hypothesis that delaying the onset of hypoxia will improve the survival and performance of CTPs in vitro.

Methods: To mimic declines seen in an avascular in vivo bone defect, colony forming efficiency by marrow derived nucleated cells was assessed under osteogenic conditions. Variation in the rate of …

Distinct Effects Of Enriched Environment On Dopamine Clearance In Nucleus Accumbens Shell And Core Following Systemic Nicotine Administration, Jun Zhu, Michael T. Bardo, Linda P. Dwoskin Jan 2013

Distinct Effects Of Enriched Environment On Dopamine Clearance In Nucleus Accumbens Shell And Core Following Systemic Nicotine Administration, Jun Zhu, Michael T. Bardo, Linda P. Dwoskin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Environmental enrichment during development may reduce drug abuse liability by modulating dopamine transporter (DAT) function. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell and core respond differentially to regulate the rewarding properties and locomotor stimulant effects of psychostimulants. The current study evaluated dopamine (DA) clearance (CLDA) in the NAc shell and core using in vivo voltammetry in rats raised in an enriched condition (EC) or an impoverished condition (IC) and determined the effect of nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) on CLDA. Baseline CLDA in NAc shell and core was not different between EC and IC rats. In the saline control group, …
