Survival And Behavior Of Chinese Mystery Snails (Bellamya Chinensis) In Response To Simulated Water Body Drawdowns And Extended Air Exposure, Kody M. Unstad, Daniel R. Uden, Craig R. Allen, Noelle M. Chaine, Danielle M. Haak, Robert A. Kill, Kevin L. Pope, Bruce J. Stephen, Alec Wong

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Nonnative invasive mollusks degrade aquatic ecosystems and induce economic losses worldwide. Extended air exposure through water body drawdown is one management action used for control. In North America, the Chinese mystery snail (Bellamya chinensis) is an invasive aquatic snail with an expanding range, but eradication methods for this species are not well documented. We assessed the ability of B. chinensis to survive different durations of air exposure, and observed behavioral responses prior to, during, and following desiccation events. Individual B. chinensis specimens survived air exposure in a laboratory setting for > 9 weeks, and survivorship was greater among adults …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The exoskeleton of gastropods provides a convenient surface for carrying marks, and in the interest of improving future marking methods our laboratory assessed the performance of an enamel paint. The endurance of the paint was also compared to other marking methods assessed in the past. We marked the shells of 30 adult Chinese mystery snails Bellamya chinensis and held them in an aquarium for 181 days. We observed no complete degradation of any enamel-paint mark during the 181 days. The enamel-paint mark was superior to a nail-polish mark, which lasted a median of 100 days. Enamel-paint marks also have a …

Ecosystems, Adaptive Management, Craig R. Allen, Joseph J. Fontaine, Ahjond S. Garmestani Jan 2013

Ecosystems, Adaptive Management, Craig R. Allen, Joseph J. Fontaine, Ahjond S. Garmestani

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Adaptive management is an approach to natural resource management that emphasizes learning through management based upon the philosophy that knowledge is incomplete and much of what is thought to be known is actually wrong, but despite uncertainty, managers and policymakers must act. Although the concept of adaptive management has resonated with resource management scientists and practitioners following its formal introduction in 1978, it has and continues to remain little practiced and much misunderstood. Misunderstanding is largely based upon the belief that adaptive management is what management has always been, a trial and error attempt to improve management outcomes. But unlike …

Can Law Foster Social-Ecological Resilience?, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Melinda H. Benson

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Law plays an essential role in shaping natural resource and environmental policy, but unfortunately, many environmental laws were developed around the prevailing scientific understanding that there was a “balance of nature” that could be managed and sustained. This view assumes that natural resource managers have the capacity to predict the behavior of ecological systems, know what its important functional components are, and successfully predict the outcome of management interventions. This paper takes on this problem by summarizing and synthesizing the contributions to this Special Feature (Law and Social-Ecological Resilience, Part I: Contributions from Resilience 2011), focusing on the interaction of …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Question: What is the precision of five methods of measuring vegetation structure using ground-based digital imagery and processing techniques?

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Methods: Vertical herbaceous cover was recorded using digital imagery techniques at two distinct locations in a mixed-grass prairie. The precision of five ground-based digital imagery vegetation analysis (DIVA)methods for measuring vegetation structure was tested using a split-split plot analysis of covariance. Variability within each DIVA technique was estimated using coefficient of variation of mean percentage cover.

Results: Vertical herbaceous cover estimates differed among DIVA techniques. Additionally, environmental conditions affected the vertical vegetation obstruction estimates for certain digital …

Great Gray Owls (Strix Nebulosa) In Yosemite National Park: On The Importance Of Food, Forest Structure, And Human Disturbance, Charles Van Riper Iii, Joseph J. Fontaine, Jan W. Van Wagtendonk

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We studied great gray owls (Strix nebulosa Forster) in Yosemite National Park, California, measuring variables that could potentially influence patterns of occurrence and conservation of this state endangered species. We found that owl presence was closely tied to habitat (red fir (Abies magnifica A. Murray) and the abundance of meadows), prey, and snags across the landscape. We also found that indicators of human recreational activities negatively influenced owl distribution and habitat use. Great gray owls appear to prefer mid-elevation red fir forest with meadows that are drier and more productive in terms of small mammal populations. That these …

Mortality Estimate Of Chinese Mystery Snail, Bellamya Chinensis (Reeve, 1863) In A Nebraska Reservoir, Danielle M. Haak, Noelle M. Chaine, Bruce J. Stephen, Alec Wong, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The Chinese mystery snail (Bellamya chinensis) is an aquatic invasive species found throughout the USA. Little is known about this species’ life history or ecology, and only one population estimate has been published, for Wild Plum Lake in southeast Nebraska. A recent die-off event occurred at this same reservoir and we present a mortality estimate for this B. chinensis population using a quadrat approach. Assuming uniform distribution throughout the newly-exposed lake bed (20,900 m2), we estimate 42,845 individuals died during this event, amounting to approximately 17% of the previously-estimated population size of 253,570. Assuming uniform distribution throughout all …

Irrigation increases agricultural productivity, but it also stresses water resources (Huffaker and Hamilton 2007). Drought and the potential for drier conditions resulting from climate change could strain water supplies in landscapes where human populations rely on finite groundwater resources for drinking, agriculture, energy, and industry (IPCC 2007). For instance, in the North American Great Plains, rowcrops are utilized for livestock feed, food, and bioenergy production (Cassman and Liska 2007), and a large portion is irrigated with groundwater from the High Plains aquifer system (McGuire 2011). Under projected future climatic conditions, greater crop water use requirements and diminished groundwater recharge rates …

Social-Ecological Predictors Of Global Invasions And Extinctions, Aaron Lotz, Craig R. Allen Jan 2013

Social-Ecological Predictors Of Global Invasions And Extinctions, Aaron Lotz, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Most assessments of resilience have been focused on local conditions. Studies focused on the relationship between humanity and environmental degradation are rare, and are rarely comprehensive. We investigated multiple social-ecological factors for 100 countries around the globe in relation to the percentage of invasions and extinctions within each country. These 100 countries contain approximately 87% of the world’s population, produce 43% of the world’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP), and take up 74% of the earth’s total land area. We used an information theoretic approach to determine which models were most supported by our data, utilizing an a priori …

Effects Of Simulated Angler Capture And Live-Release Tournaments On Walleye Survival, John H. Loomis, Harold L. Schramm Jr., Bruce Vondracek, Patrick D. Gerard, Christopher J. Chizinski

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We examined the effects of acclimation water temperature, live-well (LW) water temperature, and LW dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on survival of adult Walleyes Sander vitreus subjected to simulated tournament conditions (angling, LW confinement, and weigh-in procedures) under controlled laboratory conditions. We tested three acclimation temperatures (12, 18, and 24◦C), and three LWtemperature differentials (Delta T=−4, 0, and +4◦C) were tested at each acclimation temperature. Survival was monitored after 8 h of LW confinement and during a 5-d retention period in 1,700-L tanks. None of the Walleyes that were acclimated to 24◦C and subjected to simulated tournament procedures survived the 5-d …

Marine and coastal tourism has rapidly expanded worldwide in the past 2 decades, often occurring in once secluded habitats. In Alaska, tourism near tidewater glaciers has attracted millions of visitors and increased the presence of ships, tour vessels, and coastal development. Although sustainable tourism, resulting from balanced effects on wildlife and client satisfaction, is a goal of most tourism operators, it is not always achieved. Voluntary compliance with viewing guidelines and codes of conduct have been encouraged, but few assessments have the longitudinal scope to evaluate long-term changes in impacts on wildlife and the ability of vessel operators and kayak …

Cross-Scale Morphology, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling Jan 2013

Cross-Scale Morphology, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, C. S. Holling

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The scaling of physical, biological, ecological, and social phenomena is a major focus of efforts to develop simple representations of complex systems. Much of the attention has been on discovering universal scaling laws that emerge from simple physical and geometric processes. However, there are regular patterns of departures both from those scaling laws and from continuous distributions of attributes of systems. Those departures often demonstrate the development of self-organized interactions between living systems and physical processes over narrower ranges of scale.

Measuring The Relative Resilience Of Subarctic Lakes To Global Change: Redundancies Of Functions Within And Across Temporal Scales, David G. Angeler, Craig R. Allen, Richard K. Johnson Jan 2013

Measuring The Relative Resilience Of Subarctic Lakes To Global Change: Redundancies Of Functions Within And Across Temporal Scales, David G. Angeler, Craig R. Allen, Richard K. Johnson

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

1. Ecosystems at high altitudes and latitudes are expected to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of global change. We assessed the responses of littoral invertebrate communities to changing abiotic conditions in subarctic Swedish lakes with long-term data (1988–2010) and compared the responses of subarctic lakes with those of more southern, hemiboreal lakes.

2. We used a complex systems approach, based on multivariate time-series modelling, and identified dominant and distinct temporal frequencies in the data; that is, we tracked community change at distinct temporal scales. We determined the distribution of functional feeding groups of invertebrates within and across temporal scales. …

Modeling Social Transmission Dynamics Of Unhealthy Behaviors For Evaluating Prevention And Treatment Interventions On Childhood Obesity, Leah M. Frerichs, Ozgur M. Araz, Terry T.-K. Huang Jan 2013

Modeling Social Transmission Dynamics Of Unhealthy Behaviors For Evaluating Prevention And Treatment Interventions On Childhood Obesity, Leah M. Frerichs, Ozgur M. Araz, Terry T.-K. Huang

Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications

Research evidence indicates that obesity has spread through social networks, but lever points for interventions based on overlapping networks are not well studied. The objective of our research was to construct and parameterize a system dynamics model of the social transmission of behaviors through adult and youth influence in order to explore hypotheses and identify plausible lever points for future childhood obesity intervention research. Our objectives were: (1) to assess the sensitivity of childhood overweight and obesity prevalence to peer and adult social transmission rates, and (2) to test the effect of combinations of prevention and treatment interventions on the …

2013 Nebraska Bald Eagle Nesting Report, Joel G. Jorgensen, Lauren R. Dinan Jan 2013

2013 Nebraska Bald Eagle Nesting Report, Joel G. Jorgensen, Lauren R. Dinan

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), a species once threatened with extinction, has increased throughout North America since the mid- to late 20th Century. In Nebraska, the Bald Eagle bred historically, but was absent as a breeder for most of the 20th Century. The first active modern Bald Eagle nest in Nebraska was near Valley, Douglas County in 1991 (Farrar 1991). Since 1991, the number of Bald Eagle pairs nesting in Nebraska has increased (Jorgensen et al. 2010, 2011). In 2007, the Bald Eagle was removed from the federal list of threatened and endangered species. The following year it …

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr Jan 2013

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

The accessibility of Lange’s text might mitigate against recognizing its importance. Lange’s simple sentence structure and direct communicative mode convey a presently overlooked logical moral assertion: the impending Singularity is not a male-dominated patriarchal domain. The Singularity, in other words, should not be construed in a manner which excludes women and feminism. This assertion is patently obvious. But, nonetheless, it is often ignored. Before I read Lange’s novella as a description of the Singularity which feminists can embrace, I include the following background information: 1) a discussion about why the discourse relating to the Singularity needs to be expanded and …

Decomposition And Nitrogen Dynamics Of 15n‑Labeled Leaf, Root, And Twig Litter In Temperate Coniferous Forests, Tiff L. Van Huysen, Mark E. Harmon, Steven S. Perakis, Hua Chen Jan 2013

Decomposition And Nitrogen Dynamics Of 15n‑Labeled Leaf, Root, And Twig Litter In Temperate Coniferous Forests, Tiff L. Van Huysen, Mark E. Harmon, Steven S. Perakis, Hua Chen

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Litter nutrient dynamics contribute significantly to biogeochemical cycling in forest ecosystems. We examined how site environment and initial substrate quality influence decomposition and nitrogen (N) dynamics of multiple litter types. A 2.5-year decomposition study was installed in the Oregon Coast Range and West Cascades using 15N-labeled litter from Acer macrophyllum, Picea sitchensis, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Mass loss for leaf litter was similar between the two sites, while root and twig litter exhibited greater mass loss in the Coast Range. Mass loss was greatest from leaves and roots, and species differences in mass loss were more prominent in …

This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics of topical creams containing 15% paromomycin (“paromomycin alone”) and 15% paromomycin plus 0.5% gentamicin (WR 279,396) in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis. The investigational creams were applied topically to all lesions once daily for 20 days. Plasma samples were analyzed for simultaneous quantitation of paromomycin and gentamicin isomers and total gentamicin. Pharmacokinetic parameters for gentamicin could not be calculated because detectable levels were rarely evident. After one application, the paromomycin area under the concentration-time curve from 0 to 24 h (AUC0–24) was 2,180 +/- 2,621 ng · h/ml (mean +/- standard deviation [SD]) for …

United States Army: Publications

Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial opportunistic pathogen that can cause severe infections, including hospital-acquired pneumonia, wound infections, and sepsis. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains are prevalent, further complicating patient treatment. Due to the increase in MDR strains, the cationic antimicrobial peptide colistin has been used to treat A. baumannii infections. Colistin-resistant strains of A. baumannii with alterations to the lipid A component of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) have been reported; specifically, the lipid A structure was shown to be hepta-acylated with a phosphoethanolamine (pEtN) modification present on one of the terminal phosphate residues. Using a tandem mass spectrometry platform, we provide definitive evidence that …

Optimal Thickness Distributions Of Aeroelastic Flapping Shells, Bret Stanford, Philip Beran Jan 2013

Optimal Thickness Distributions Of Aeroelastic Flapping Shells, Bret Stanford, Philip Beran

United States Air Force: Publications

The severe weight limitations of flapping wing micro air vehicles necessitates the use of thin flexible wings, which in turn requires an aeroelastic modeling tool for proper numerical characterization. Furthermore, due to the unconventional nature of these vehicles, wing design guidelines for thrust and/or power considerations are not generally available; numerical design optimization then becomes a valuable tool. This work couples a nonlinear shell model to an unsteady vortex lattice solver, and then computes analytical design gradients: the derivative of aerodynamic force/power quantities with respect to a large vector of thickness variables. Gradient-based optimization is then used to locate the …
