Influence Of Blood Storage Time On Viral Rna Extraction For The Detection Of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus In Persistently Infected Cattle, Yingxia Liu, Jie Cao, Junjie Zhang, Kai Huang, Changming Qi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study aimed to determine the maximum permissible storage times of blood and serum infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Viral RNA was successfully extracted from blood and serum that were stored at room temperature (RT) for 7 days and was detected by 1-step RT-PCR. The results of this study demonstrate that BVDV-infected blood can be stored at RT for 7 days and that serum can be stored for 10 days without influencing the viral RNA extraction for the detection of BVDV.

A New Color Image Quality Measure Based On Yuv Transformation And Psnr For Human Vision System, Yildiray Yalman, İsmai̇l Ertürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Various methods for measuring perceptual image quality attempt to quantify the visibility of differences between an original digital image and its distorted version using a variety of known properties of the human vision system (HVS). In this paper, we propose a simple and effective full-reference color image quality measure (CQM) based on reversible luminance and chrominance (YUV) color transformation and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) measure. The main motivation of this new measure relies on a unique feature of the human eye response to the luminance and color. Experimental studies about the applicability of the CQM on a well-known test image …

Multiobjective Daily Volt/Var Control In Distribution Systems With Distributed Generation Using Binary Ant Colony Optimization, Reza Azimi, Saeid Esmaeili
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a multiobjective daily voltage and reactive power control (Volt/VAr) in radial distribution systems, including distributed generation units. The main purpose is to determine optimum dispatch schedules for on-load tap changer (OLTC) settings at substations, substation-switched capacitors, and feeder-switched capacitors based on the day-ahead load forecast. The objectives are selected to minimize the voltage deviation on the secondary bus of the main transformer, total electrical energy losses, the number of OLTCs, and capacitor operation and voltage fluctuations in distribution systems for the next day. Since this model is the weighted sum of individual objective functions, an analytic hierarchy …

Chaos Control Of Single Time-Scale Brushless Dc Motor With Sliding Mode Control Method, Yilmaz Uyaroğlu, Bariş Cevher
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the sliding mode control (SMC) scheme of single time-scale brushless DC motor (BLDCM) is investigated. The SMC method consists of 2 sections. To simplify the directive of the stability of the controlled single time-scale BLDCM in the sliding mode, first a special type of PI switching surface is adopted. Second, the SMC controller is obtained to guarantee the occurrence of the PI switching surface. The effectiveness of the theoretical analysis is evaluated by numerical simulations. Thus, the numerical results are used to show the verification and trustworthiness of the proposed method.

An Automated Signal Alignment Algorithm Based On Dynamic Time Warping For Capillary Electrophoresis Data, Fethullah Karabi̇ber
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Correcting the retention time variation and measuring the similarity of time series is one of the most popular challenges in the area of analyzing capillary electrophoresis (CE) data. In this study, an automated signal alignment method is proposed by modifying the dynamic time warping (DTW) approach to align the time-series data. Preprocessing tools and further optimizations were developed to increase the performance of the algorithm. As a demonstrative case study, the developed algorithm is applied to the analysis of CE data from a selective 2'-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension (SHAPE) evaluation of the RNA secondary structure. The time-shift problem …

A Computer-Aided Diagnosis System For Breast Cancer Detection By Using A Curvelet Transform, Nebi̇ Gedi̇k, Ayten Atasoy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The most common type of cancer among women worldwide is breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer is very important to reduce the fatality rate. For the hundreds of mammographic images scanned by a radiologist, only a few are cancerous. While detecting abnormalities, some of them may be missed, as the detection of suspicious and abnormal images is a recurrent mission that causes fatigue and eyestrain. In this paper, a computer-aided diagnosis system using the curvelet transform (CT) algorithm is proposed for interpreting mammograms to improve the decision making. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for …

Comparison Study Of Computational Parameter Values Between Lrn And Narx In Identifying Nonlinear Systems, Farah Hani Nordin, Farrukh Hafiz Nagi, Aidil Azwin Zainul Abidin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
To determine the nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (NARX) parameter values is not an easy task, even though NARX is reported to successfully identify nonlinear systems. Apart from the activation functions, number of layers, layer size, learning rate, and number of epochs, the number of delays at the input and at the feedback loop need to also be determined. The layer recurrent network (LRN) is seen to have the potential to outperform NARX. However, not many papers have reported on using the LRN to identify nonlinear systems. Therefore, it is the aim of this paper to investigate and analyze …

Lightweight Wireless Protocol Based On Ieee 802.11 For Delay Sensitive Telerobotic Systems, Onur Toker, Haluk Gümüşkaya, Ci̇han Ulaş, Bora Tamer Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we consider wireless telerobotic systems and protocol development for low-delay wireless communication. Telerobotics can be defined as the control of robot arms from a remote location. In a telerobotic system, there is a robot arm to be controlled that is identified as the `slave arm', and a remote operator at a distant location using a robotic manipulator that is called the `master arm'. In the control system measurements, actuator delays do degrade the system's performance. Therefore, communication delays between the master and slave arms, and their minimization, are of extreme importance in telerobotics. In this paper, we …

Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection Of Neuronal Cells Induces Changes In Calcium-Associated Gene Expression Consistent With Alzheimer’S Disease, Christopher Andrew Cappellini, Ahmad B. Cader, Keith G. Williams, Juliana Zoga, Susan T. Hingley
Scholarly Posters
Background and Significance: Previous studies have shown that cells infected with Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) exhibit altered gene expression consistent with that observed in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Furthermore, AD neurodegeneration has been linked to dysregulation of intracellular calcium and calcium-related processes. Therefore, we hypothesize that one mechanism by which pathogenesis evolves in AD is through infection-induced changes in expression of calcium-related genes. Objectives: To determine if infection of neuronal cells with Cpn alters expression of calciumrelated genes associated with neurodegeneration. Methods: SK-N-MC neuronal cells were infected with Cpn (AR39 strain; MOI=1) for 3 to 72 hours, then calcium-related genes were screened …

Teaching Elementary Aural Skills - How Current Brain Research May Help, Paula J. Telesco
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Paula Telesco interweaves the current state of aural skills teaching with cognitive studies, shedding new light on how we approach teaching skills. "All music departments share at least one common goal: to cultivate the musicianship of all their students, enabling each to be a better musician than he or she was upon entering the program. In a general sense, that means increasing the literacy and fluency of all music students. It may, therefore, behoove us to revisit and reevaluate what most of us would probably agree is a standard Aural Skills curriculum to determine whether the model is still as …

The increasing use of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) for the fabrication of biological microfluidic devices necessitates further research on LTCC biocompatibility. In this study we explore the inhibitory effect of DuPont's 951 LTCC on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and demonstrate a novel mechanism to increase biocompatibility between LTCC and PCR with the addition of a common passivation substance, bovine serum albumin (BSA). We show that DuPont's 951 LTCC binds negatively charged proteins including BSA and ovalbumin (OVA). This is a significant discovery as proteins (enzymes) are an essential component of most biological reactions, and a frequent addition to microfluidic …
On The Predictive Analytics Of The Probit And Logit Link Functions, Necla Gunduz, Ernest Fokoue
On The Predictive Analytics Of The Probit And Logit Link Functions, Necla Gunduz, Ernest Fokoue
Articles
Researchers and practitioners have long held that the probit and logit link functions generally yield the same performance in binary classification. Despite this widespread recognition of the strong similarities between these two link functions, very few (if any) researchers have dedicated time to carry out a formal study aimed at establishing and characterizing firmly all the aspects of the similarities and differences. This paper proposes a definition of both structural and predictive equivalence link functions-based binary regression models, and provides both a theoretical and computational justification of the long held claim that probit and logit are indeed very similar. From …

The Role Of Pubertal Timing And Temperamental Vulnerability In Adolescents’ Internalizing Symptoms, Lisa J. Crockett, Gustavo Carlo, Jennifer M. Wolff, Meredith O. Hope
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This longitudinal study examined the joint role of pubertal timing and temperament variables (emotional reactivity and self-regulation) in predicting adolescents’ internalizing symptoms. The multiethnic sample included 1,025 adolescent girls and boys followed fromage 11 to age 15 (Mage¼11.03 years at Time 1). In structural equation models, age 11 measures of pubertal timing, emotional reactivity, and self-regulation and their interactions were used to predict adolescents’ internalizing behavior concurrently and at age 15. Results indicated that, among girls, early pubertal timing, higher emotional reactivity, and lower self-regulation predicted increased internalizing behavior. In addition, self-regulation moderated the effect of pubertal timing such that …
Increases In Cognitive And Linguistic Processing Primarily Account For Increases In Speaking Rate With Age, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green
Increases In Cognitive And Linguistic Processing Primarily Account For Increases In Speaking Rate With Age, Ignatius S. B. Nip, Jordan R. Green
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Age-related increases of speaking rate are not fully understood, but have been attributed to gains in biologic factors and learned skills that support speech production. This study investigated developmental changes in speaking rate and articulatory kinematics of participants aged 4 (N = 7), 7 (N = 10), 10 (N = 9), 13 (N = 7), 16 (N = 9) years, and young adults (N = 11) in speaking tasks varying in task demands. Speaking rate increased with age, with decreases in pauses and articulator displacements but not increases in articulator movement speed. Movement speed did not appear to constrain the …

Topological And Historical Considerations For Infectious Disease Transmission Among Injecting Drug Users In Bushwick, Brooklyn (Usa), Kirk Dombrowski, Richard Curtis, Samuel Friedman, Bilal Khan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Recent interest by physicists in social networks and disease transmission factors has prompted debate over the topology of degree distributions in sexual networks. Social network researchers have been critical of “scale-free” Barabasi-Albert approaches, and largely rejected the preferential attachment, “rich-get-richer” assumptions that underlie that model. Instead, research on sexual networks has pointed to the importance of homophily and local sexual norms in dictating degree distributions, and thus disease transmission thresholds. Injecting Drug User (IDU) network topologies may differ from the emerging models of sexual networks, however. Degree distribution analysis of a Brooklyn, NY, IDU network indicates a different topology than …
