How Our Students View Gender Roles, Annette Tomal

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Student views of the role of women in the family were compared with results from a National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH). Freshmen and seniors from an evangelical Christian college were surveyed with 498 responses. The college students were more likely to support traditional gender roles than the NSFH respondents. Freshmen (41%) were more supportive of traditional gender roles than seniors (22%). Senior females (71%) were least supportive of traditional gender roles, compared with freshman males (31%). Seniors (35%) were more likely than freshmen (24%) to approve of mothers of preschoolers working full-time. Senior females (43%) were most supportive …

Crafting Identity, Collaboration, And Relevance For Academic Librarians Using Communities Of Practice, Nora Belzowski, J. Parker Ladwig, Thurston Miller Jan 2013

Crafting Identity, Collaboration, And Relevance For Academic Librarians Using Communities Of Practice, Nora Belzowski, J. Parker Ladwig, Thurston Miller

Collaborative Librarianship

Faculty/librarian collaboration is vital for librarians to remain integral to the academy. We now have an opportunity to change how we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by faculty and administrators. There are viable solutions for expanding the role of the librarian in ways that could lead to better faculty partnerships. First, librarians must be grounded in a shared purpose and professional identity and establish a contextual framework for our own professional ‘boundaries.’ We cannot create an intersection with the knowledge and experience of others if we do not have an understanding of our own frame. Interviews and investigation …

Unique Factors For Motivating Engineers: A Motivation Meta Theory Approach, Kenneth R. Browne Jan 2013

Unique Factors For Motivating Engineers: A Motivation Meta Theory Approach, Kenneth R. Browne

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

According to the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, the United States is not producing enough engineers to meet the growing needs of employers (as cited in Von Bergen, 2012). While engineers represent an important role in American industry, engineers are leaving the profession or are unsatisfied with their work (Stabbert, 2010) while engineer output per hour and per engineer is declining (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2012). As a potential remedy to this injurious industry trend, application of motivation theories can improve employee retention (Ramlall, 2004), detect and correct morale problems (Herzberg, 2003), detect an engineer's development needs (Shoura & …

An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of Values In Microeconomic Decision-Making And The Implications For Organizations And Leaders, Holly A. Bell Jan 2013

An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of Values In Microeconomic Decision-Making And The Implications For Organizations And Leaders, Holly A. Bell

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

This research is designed to test the role reflecting on and sharing values plays in our individual decision-making schemas in a group. The research is based on evidence from the literature that values play a role in economic decision-making, can be formed and utilized either consciously or unconsciously, and impact microeconomic decision-making and ethics in organizations. The study found that when decision considerations were reframed in a values context the decision-making process became more quasi-rational, but the decisions participants made were as good or better than they were before values were introduced. In some cases decision-makers became less interested in …

Why I Am Optimistic About My Post Phd-Degree Life – A Commentary, Sophia L. Johnson

Florida Public Health Review

Public health is an area where we will always need professionally-prepared people. Whereas some soon-to-be graduates are concerned about their future job prospects, others express optimism, undeterred by the economic downturn of the past five years and the funding challenges that currently burden higher education. Staying focused and finding the right niche may be the key to a successful future.

Why I Am Worried About My Post Mph-Degree Life – A Commentary, Marissa Berrier

Florida Public Health Review

Public health is an area where we will always need professionally-prepared people, but despite the aging of the public health workforce, some soon-to-graduate MPH students are concerned that there might not be a place for them. Perhaps now more than ever public health professional programs and schools need to devote increased resources toward internships, skill development, and job placement.

Breaking The Silence: Learning About Youth Sexual And Reproductive Health In Egypt, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Sally Saher, Nora El Nawawi

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This collection of research (supported by the Ford Foundation office in Cairo) documents the Population Council’s efforts to build the capacity of young Egyptian researchers to study youth sexual and reproductive health. Understanding the needs of young Egyptians, including their sexual and reproductive health needs, is crucial for developing policies and programs that can help bring about desired changes and improve their health and well-being. Young people must be given accurate information and access to services to protect their sexual and reproductive health and to prepare them for taking on family responsibilities as they get older. This report sets the …

Building Public Health Preparedness And Food And Agriculture Defense Capabilities Using Whole Community And One Health Concepts, Joseph S. Lombardo, Jeffrey R. Ryan Jan 2013

Building Public Health Preparedness And Food And Agriculture Defense Capabilities Using Whole Community And One Health Concepts, Joseph S. Lombardo, Jeffrey R. Ryan

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Emergency managers are embracing the Whole Community approach described in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) preparedness policy, doctrine, and guidance. The Whole Community approach entails broad collaboration and integration of effort among multiple disciplines and preparedness partners to coordinate solutions for all threats and hazards. Potential public health emergencies – to include foodborne and animal disease outbreaks – are issues on the emergency management agenda requiring such broad coordination. Scientists and public health practitioners across multiple disciplines describe a philosophy very similar to “Whole Community” known as “One Health,” linking efforts to address the shared threats to human, animal and …

Pathways To High-Lethality Suicide Attempts, Megan Schaffer Chesin Jan 2013

Pathways To High-Lethality Suicide Attempts, Megan Schaffer Chesin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a model of the trajectory to high-lethality suicidal behavior for individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). An increased number of previous suicide attempts, substance use immediately prior to the attempt, and objective planning were proposed to lead directly to an attempt of higher lethality. Meanwhile, aggression and impulsivity were hypothesized to lead indirectly, through their association with past suicidal behavior, to a higher lethality attempt. Path analysis revealed a revised model that applied only to individuals with BPD. In this final model, impulsivity was found to be …

The Wild Child: Children Are Freaks In Antebellum Novels, Heathe Bernadette Heim Jan 2013

The Wild Child: Children Are Freaks In Antebellum Novels, Heathe Bernadette Heim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates the spectacle of antebellum freak shows and focuses on how Phineas Taylor Barnum's influence permeates five antebellum novels. The study concerns itself with wild children staged as freaks in Margaret by Sylvester Judd, City Crimes by George Thompson, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and Our Nig by Harriet Wilson. Barnum's influence was pervasive. The novels I investigate span a period of fourteen years before the Civil War, and offer a view of the kid show presented by the freaks in each text. Touching into spectacle, authors construct narratives …

Dissociation And Potential Space On The Rorschach As Predictors Of Concurrent Ptsd And Substance Dependence Treatment Outcomes, Stephen John Anen Jan 2013

Dissociation And Potential Space On The Rorschach As Predictors Of Concurrent Ptsd And Substance Dependence Treatment Outcomes, Stephen John Anen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are ongoing public health crises. Dissociative experiences are considered core processes within both of these conditions (van der Kolk & van der Hart, 1989; Briere & Runtz, 1987; Schafer et al., 2010). Dissociation, which involves the compartmentalization of psychic experience, also exerts a significant influence over psychotherapies that aim to address both PTSD and SUD (Davidson & Foa, 1991; Spitzer, Barnow, Freyberger, & Grabe, 2007). However, dissociation is a wide concept that encompasses several perceptual, cognitive, affective, memory, and self-state processes (Bernstein & Putnam, 1986; Briere, Weathers, & Runtz, 2005). …

Reflective Functioning And Differentiation-Relatedness During Pregnancy And Infant Attachment Outcomes At One Year, Amy Elizabeth Daley

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study compared maternal reflective functioning (RF) and differentiation-relatedness (DR) during pregnancy and examined how these processes relate to the quality of mother-infant attachment at one year. The subjects were 35 mother-infant pairs drawn from the control group of a longitudinal treatment study, "Minding the Baby (MTB)," a federally and privately funded home intervention program developed jointly by the Yale School of Nursing and Yale Child Study Center, led by Drs. Lois Sadler and Arietta Slade, and targeting a low socio-economic status area of New Haven, CT. The Pregnancy Interview (Slade, 2003) was administered to the women (ages 14-25 years) …

Boronic Acids As Penicillinase Inhibitors, Juan F. Barquero Jan 2013

Boronic Acids As Penicillinase Inhibitors, Juan F. Barquero

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

β-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria resistant to antibiotics. A common feature on beta lactam antibiotics is the beta-lactam ring. β-lactamases hydrolyze the β-lactam ring leaving the antibiotic inoperative. The advent of bacteria that are resistant to β-lactams has impelled researchers to find inhibitors for β-lactamases that mimic the lactam ring but do not get hydrolyzed. One group of these new antibiotics is the aryl boronic acids. The main reason the boronic acids have been chosen as potential drugs is their lack of toxicity and their easy excretion in the urine. One of the most important structural features of these …

Diversity, Resource Partitioning, And Species Turnover In Neotropical Saproxylic Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae, Curculionidae) Associated With Trees In The Brazil Nut Family (Lecythidaceae), Joyce Lynn Fassbender

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Deforestation and global changes in temperature and moisture associated with rising levels of greenhouse gases are expected to have strong, direct effects on abundance of wood-boring beetles through loss of larval feeding substrates, and indirect effects through climate and microclimate change. This dissertation examines Neotropical saproxylic beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) diversity, niche breadth, and resource partitioning, and predicts possible impacts of climate change. Data from beetle rearing experiments conducted in French Guiana and Peru were analyzed to assess species richness, abundance, host specificity, seasonality and stratification of wood-boring beetles associated with the Brazil nut family (Lecythidaceae). Niche stability was assessed over …

Understanding A Pest: Phylogeography And Systematics Of The Plum Curculio (Conotrachelus Nenuphar), Samuel N. Crane

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an economically and ecologically important pest in North America but is understudied despite having a long history in the scientific literature. Its chemical ecology, life history habits, and distribution are all well characterized. However, there is a dearth of knowledge concerning the population structure and evolutionary history of the species. This study aims to use methods from evolutionary biology to better understand an agricultural pest species and provide tools to aid in its management.

Existing taxonomic classifications of North American Conotrachelus species have been tested for the first time. Using …
