Cofilin Navigates Cellular Cytoskeleton And Invasion Responses To Tgf-Β Towards Prostate Cancer Metastasis, Joanne Collazo Santiago Jan 2013

Cofilin Navigates Cellular Cytoskeleton And Invasion Responses To Tgf-Β Towards Prostate Cancer Metastasis, Joanne Collazo Santiago

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Cofilin’s activity to nucleate actin filament assembly, is regulated by phosphorylation at a single site on the amino terminus, Serine 3. Phosphorylation at this site abolishes the ability of ADF/cofilin to bind to F-actin and inhibits its severing function. This work characterizes the ability of dephosphorylated cofilin (mutation at Serine 3 site) to navigate prostate cancer actin cytoskeleton and metastatic properties in response to TGF-β. TGF-β increased Lim Domain Kinase 2 (LIMK-2) activity leading to cofilin phosphorylation and decrease actin filament severing in wild type cofilin (WTCFL) PC-3 cells. Constitutively active cofilin in Serine 3 cofilin mutants (S3ACFL) promoted prostate …

Legal, Technical, And Economic Challenges In Integrating Renewable Power Generation Into The Electricity Grid, Timothy P. Duane, Kiran H. Griffith Jan 2013

Legal, Technical, And Economic Challenges In Integrating Renewable Power Generation Into The Electricity Grid, Timothy P. Duane, Kiran H. Griffith

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

This Article addresses the legal, technical, and economic challenges of integrating high levels of renewable power generation into electrical grid system operation. Part II shows that the primary integration challenge is reducing the total costs of integration and allocating the costs of integration in a hybrid regulatory structure, which presents different institutional impediments than traditional cost-of-service ratemaking or rate-of-return regulation. We demonstrate that the primary impediment to improved integration is a failure to make the critical policy choice about how such costs will be allocated. Part III describes and analyzes the BPA-wind dispute in order to evaluate the adequacy of …

Feeding Modes Of Larvae Of Nematostella Vectensis (Cnidaria: Anthozoa), Amanda Kehr Smith '13, William Jaeckle

Students' Professional Presentations and Publications

We assessed the ability of larvae of the starlet sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, to assimilate dissolved organic material (DOM) and ingest artificial and natural particles from seawater. Planulae were exposed to the proteins ferritin and labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) and the polysaccharides iron dextran and labeled dextran (FITC-dextran) at solute concentrations between 0.25-1.0 mg/mL for 1-5 hours at 22°C. Other larvae were incubated with polystyrene beads (0.5 μm, 106 beads/mL and 4.5 μm and 6 μm, 103 beads/mL) or with algal cells (Dunaliella tertiolecta, 5 ' 103 cells/mL) for 2.5-5 h. The label from all provided macromolecules …

Observations On Eye Care In Lamu, Kenya: Overlooked Needs And Proposed Interventions, Erick Henderson, Rebecca Gearhart Jan 2013

Observations On Eye Care In Lamu, Kenya: Overlooked Needs And Proposed Interventions, Erick Henderson, Rebecca Gearhart

Scholarship

These notes draw attention to the underserved eye care needs of residents of Lamu, Kenya. They are comprised of observations that we, Rebecca Gearhart, an anthropology professor at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) and Erick Henderson, an IWU biology and pre-optometry major and president of the Optometry Club, made while volunteering at a clinic in Lamu, Kenya during the summer of 2011. Plans to establish a temporary eye clinic emerged after Rebecca discovered that Erick was an optometric technician who might use his portable optometry lens set to fit residents of Lamu Town on Lamu Island for glasses and teach them …

Influence Of Latitude On The Winter Abundance Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis) And American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius) In Illinois, Given Harper, Anna Groves, Vic Berardi, Paul Sweet, Jance Sweet, Angelo Capparella Jan 2013

Influence Of Latitude On The Winter Abundance Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis) And American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius) In Illinois, Given Harper, Anna Groves, Vic Berardi, Paul Sweet, Jance Sweet, Angelo Capparella

Scholarship

We use five years of data from 18 routes surveyed to determine the temporal stability of a first reported 100 years pattern, and reconfirmed that the abundance of winter 50 years ago tailed Hawk and American Kestrel decreases with increasing latitude, being more high in the central regions of Illinos in the northern regions. Trained volunteers conducted sampling ( n  = 143) a month driving along selected routes from December to February, from 2004-2005 to 2008-2009. We found significant increases in the abundance of both species from the northern regions to the central regions of Illinois. No significant effects of …

Seawater Flow Into The Digestive System Of Actinotroch Larvae (Phoronida), William Jaeckle Jan 2013

Seawater Flow Into The Digestive System Of Actinotroch Larvae (Phoronida), William Jaeckle

Scholarship

Actinotroch larva (Phoronida) concentrate and collect food particles during their planktonic existance. Reported mechanisms of particle capture include both ciliary reversal and direct interception along the larval tentacles, and suction of particle-containing seawater into the larval vestibule. These diverse mechanisms explain collection of particles, but not subsequent ingestion. Particle delivery into the digestive system is accomplished, at least in part, by the activity of the esophageal cilia. If and how the beat frequency of esophageal cilia is modified by the presence or absence of particulate or dissolved organic materials remains unknown for actinotroch larvae.

Assessing Undergraduate Nursing Students' Knowledge, Attitudes And Cultural Competence In Caring For Lgbt Patients, Kristy L. Strong Jan 2013

Assessing Undergraduate Nursing Students' Knowledge, Attitudes And Cultural Competence In Caring For Lgbt Patients, Kristy L. Strong

Honors Projects

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients experience barriers to health care that include fear of discrimination and limited access to providers knowledgeable about and sensitive to the LGBT population and their specific health needs. This study examined the effectiveness of an educational intervention conducted at Illinois Wesleyan University designed to improve knowledge level and attitudes of nursing students toward LGBT patient care. The educational intervention focused on key terminology, health disparities, medical needs of transgender patients and culturally sensitive communication skills necessary for competent LGBT patient care. Knowledge level and attitudes were evaluated before and after the educational intervention …

Modeling Bedrock Mining Hotspots Within The Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas, Stephanie H. Mehlhope Jan 2013

Modeling Bedrock Mining Hotspots Within The Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas, Stephanie H. Mehlhope

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This study, concentrating on the Ouachita Mountain Range in western-central Arkansas, extends prior work on treethrows and their influence on soil development in the region by supplying a method of determining hotspots of bedrock mining by treethrow. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the abiotic and biotic factors that are highly correlated with the rate of bedrock detachment found in uprooted rootwads from three study sites within the Ouachita National Forest. The produced logistic regression models suggest topographic factors, tree specific characteristics, as well as the local geology and soil characteristics all have a significant effect upon the …

The Devil Made Her Do It: Understanding Suicide, Demonic Discourse, And The Social Construction Of 'Health' In Yucatan, Mexico, Beatriz M. Reyes-Foster Jan 2013

The Devil Made Her Do It: Understanding Suicide, Demonic Discourse, And The Social Construction Of 'Health' In Yucatan, Mexico, Beatriz M. Reyes-Foster

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In the state of Yucatan, Mexico, the suicide rate more than doubles the Mexican national average. This article uses ethnographic data to argue that 1) local understandings of suicide in Yucatán reflect a logic of health among Yucatec Maya people hinging on the belief that spiritual, bodily, and spatial balance must be maintained in order to prevent “illness,” understood as bodily and spiritual suffering; and 2) that Yucatec Maya users of Mexico’s public health system readily adapt the biomedical model to existing paradigms that comingle spiritual, mental, and bodily health due in great part to the inherent contradictions in both …

Data Mining And Pattern Discovery Using Exploratory And Visualization Methods For Large Multidimensional Datasets, Hsin-Fang Li Jan 2013

Data Mining And Pattern Discovery Using Exploratory And Visualization Methods For Large Multidimensional Datasets, Hsin-Fang Li

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Oral health problems have been a major public health concern profoundly affecting people’s general health and quality of life. Given that oral health data is composed of several measurable dimensions including clinical measurements, socio-behavioral factors, genetic predispositions, self-reported assessments, and quality of life measures, strategies for analyzing multidimensional data are neither computationally straightforward nor efficient. Researchers face major challenges to identify tools that circumvent the processes of manually probing the data.

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide applications of the proposed methodology on oral health-related data that go beyond identifying risk factors from a single dimension, and to …

Natural Sciences Faculty Publications

Insertion/deletion (indel) mutations, which are represented by gaps in multiple sequence alignments, have been used to examine phylogenetic hypotheses for some time. However, most analyses combine gap data with the nucleotide sequences in which they are embedded, probably because most phylogenetic datasets include few gap characters. Here, we report analyses of 12,030 gap characters from an alignment of avian nuclear genes using maximum parsimony (MP) and a simple maximum likelihood (ML) framework. Both trees were similar, and they exhibited almost all of the strongly supported relationships in the nucleotide tree, although neither gap tree supported many relationships that have proven …

Environmental Factors Influencing Oxidative Stress In Respiratory Cells, Carresse L. Gerald Jan 2013

Environmental Factors Influencing Oxidative Stress In Respiratory Cells, Carresse L. Gerald

Dissertations

Agriculture workers inhale a variety of dusts, gases, microbes and compounds on a daily basis. Several respiratory diseases display inflammation and oxidative stress as key factors of pathogenesis. To better understand the effects of agricultural dusts on the airway there first needs to be characterization of dust components. Thus, we hypothesized that confinement facilities contain high levels of respirable particles, bacteria, and elements of respiratory importance. We further hypothesized that SCF dust alone or in combination with diepoxybutane (DEB) will result in oxidative stress and phytonutrients from the sorrel plant will reduce these effects. Several bacterial species were identified via …

Expanding The Chemistry Of Fluorescent Protein Biosensors Through Genetic Incorporation Of Unnatural Amino Acids, Wei Niu, Jiantao Guo Jan 2013

Expanding The Chemistry Of Fluorescent Protein Biosensors Through Genetic Incorporation Of Unnatural Amino Acids, Wei Niu, Jiantao Guo

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Fluorescent proteins are essential tools in biological research, ranging from the study of individual biological components to the interrogation of complex cellular systems. Fluorescent protein derived biosensors are increasingly applied to the study of biological molecules and events in living cells. The present review focuses on a specific class of fluorescent protein biosensors in which a genetically installed unnatural amino acid (UAA*) acts as the sensing element. Upon direct interaction with the analyte of interest, the chemical and/or physical properties of UAA* are altered, which triggers fluorescence property changes of the biosensor and generates readouts. In comparison to mutagenesis approaches …
