Synthetic Approaches To Thiacorannulene, Rama Yaghi
Synthetic Approaches To Thiacorannulene, Rama Yaghi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Thiacorannulene is an unknown, open geodesic heteropolyarene comprised of a central five-membered ring surrounded by four benzene rings and one thiophene ring. This heterobuckybowl is expected to have unique physical, chemical and biological properties. The curvature in thiacorannulene should provide two distinct surfaces, convex and concave, and should affect properties such as dipole moment, ionization potential, metal binding, etc. Having a thiophene ring embedded in its structure is expected to influence the reactivity of this compound. We sought to devise syntheses of the unknown heterobuckybowl based on earlier, optimized syntheses of buckybowls, heterobuckybowls, and heterocirculenes. Details of our attempted syntheses …

Phage Life History Traits : Regulation Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Evolution Of Phage Resistance Within The Drosophila Melanogaster Host Environment, Heather Lindberg
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Due to the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria, there has been renewed interest in using bacteriophage to treat bacterial infections (phage therapy). This body of work examined different aspects related to the interaction between bacteria and phage within a host using the system of Drosophila melanogaster infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is then treated with lytic bacteriophage. Using this system four specific areas were addressed: I) How in vitro phage life history traits may be predictive of in vivo therapeutic efficacy, II) How the in vivo phage/bacteria dynamics differ for two different phages throughout the course of infection, III) How …

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med
OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Reduced expression of histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) in alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells may account for reduced response of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients to glucocorticoids. HDAC2 expression and its role in mediating glucocorticoid effects on fibroblast functions, however, has not been fully studied. This study was designed to investigate whether HDAC2 mediates glucocorticoid effects on release of inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) from human lung fibroblasts.
METHODS: Human lung fibroblasts (HFL-1 cells) were stimulated with interleukin (IL)-1 β plus tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the presence or absence of the glucocorticoid budesonide. Cytokines (IL-6 …

Stars Of The East And West : The Anglo-American Invention Of The Circassian Girl, Alexandra E. Mcdowall
Stars Of The East And West : The Anglo-American Invention Of The Circassian Girl, Alexandra E. Mcdowall
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The choices a society makes regarding their entertainment speak to their deeper desires, fears, and values. A uniquely nineteenth century freak show attraction known as "Circassian Girls" represented a tension in the changing world. More than an entertaining spectacle of a person from a far-flung corner of the world, Circassian Girls became constructed symbols of race, nationalism, class, and gender. Through their manufactured perfection, these performers became a caricature of white, middle-class womanhood. This paper compares the freak show performers with other descriptions of Circassian Girls through the nineteenth century, placing them into the context of perceptions of the East, …
Effect Of Data Aggregation At Two Geographic Levels On The Association Between Absms And Gonorrhea Rates In Nys, 1999-2001, Christina Michelle Gray
Effect Of Data Aggregation At Two Geographic Levels On The Association Between Absms And Gonorrhea Rates In Nys, 1999-2001, Christina Michelle Gray
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study compared the association between residential area factors and gonorrhea, aggregated at both the census tract versus ZIP code levels. Prior research has found that census block groupings are most optimal in neighborhood-level studies, followed by census tracts and ZIP codes. Because several healthcare databases currently only provide ZIP code level data, the aim of this study was to examine whether there exists a meaningful difference between the interpretation of census tract and ZIP code aggregate data. Our study measured the association between socioeconomic factors and gonorrhea in New York State, exclusive of New York City (NYC), census tracts …
Defining An Optimal Surface Chemistry For Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture In 2d And 3d, Michael Roy Zonca Jr.
Defining An Optimal Surface Chemistry For Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture In 2d And 3d, Michael Roy Zonca Jr.
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Surface chemistry is critical for growing pluripotent stem cells in an undifferentiated state. There is great potential to engineer the surface chemistry at the nanoscale level to regulate stem cell adhesion. However, the challenge is to identify the optimal surface chemistry of the substrata for ES cell attachment and maintenance. Using a high-throughput polymerization and screening platform, a chemically defined, synthetic polymer grafted coating that supports strong attachment and high expansion capacity of pluripotent stem cells has been discovered using mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells as a model system. This optimal substrate, N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide (DMAPMA) that is grafted on 2D …
The Masking Effects Of Light On Circadian Activity And Sleep Rhythms In Drosophila Melanogaster, Aaron David Sheppard
The Masking Effects Of Light On Circadian Activity And Sleep Rhythms In Drosophila Melanogaster, Aaron David Sheppard
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As organisms evolved, so did mechanisms for synchronizing behavior to the environmental light-dark cycle. Two main mechanisms provide this link: the synchronization of an endogenous circadian oscillator with the exogenous environment (entrainment), and a process called "masking", which functions independently from the circadian clock. Organisms have evolved these endogenous and exogenous mechanisms to adapt to the light-dark cycle of their niches in order to integrate their behavioral and physiological responses with predictable changes in their environments, in this case changes involving the daily light-dark cycle.
2'-O-Methyl Substitutions In The Yeast Telomerase Pseudoknot And Their Effects On Telomerase Activity, Katelyn Mae Jasper
2'-O-Methyl Substitutions In The Yeast Telomerase Pseudoknot And Their Effects On Telomerase Activity, Katelyn Mae Jasper
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex that synthesizes telomeric repeats at the ends of linear chromosomes to form the DNA–protein complexes known as telomeres. Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes from degradation during replication due to the end-replication problem. When replication occurs, gaps are created at the beginning of the lagging and leading strands that result in the loss of a small amount of DNA at every replication cycle. By adding thousands of copies of telomeric repeats, the repeats are lost in the replication process and not precious genetic information. The telomerase RNA varies drastically among different species both in …
Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Performance, And Cognitive Complaints Among Individuals With Hiv, Andrea Lynn Hobkirk
Depressive Symptoms, Neuropsychological Performance, And Cognitive Complaints Among Individuals With Hiv, Andrea Lynn Hobkirk
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The rates of depression and neuropsychological impairment in HIV-positive populations are considerably higher than the general population. Consistent research suggests that depression is not related to cognitive impairment in HIV, however the majority of these studies were conducted with unidimensional or dichotomous measures of depression, weak methodologies, and small sample sizes. There is limited research suggesting that affective and somatic depressive symptoms alone may be associated with neuropsychological impairment in HIV, possibly through central nervous system dysfunction, yet no study to date has assessed this relation with an adequate sample size and a full neuropsychological battery. In addition, no study …

Role Of P450 Enzymes In Tobacco Dependence And Lung Tumorigenesis, Lei Li
Role Of P450 Enzymes In Tobacco Dependence And Lung Tumorigenesis, Lei Li
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The overall aim of this study is to better define the roles of P450 enzymes, particularly those in the CYP2A, 2B, and 2F gene subfamilies, in the metabolism and actions of tobacco-related chemicals. Tobacco smoke contains numerous compounds that are deleterious to health, including the primary addictive component nicotine and procarcinogenic compounds, such as naphthalene (NA) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK). Our main hypotheses are i) that CYP2A and 2B enzymes are largely responsible for nicotine metabolism, and they can impact nicotine dependence; and ii) that CYP2A, 2B, and 2F enzymes play important and tissue-specific roles in NA and NNK bioactivation, leading …

Modeling The Ecological Niche Of The Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee Under Climate Change, Paul Ryan Sesink Clee
Modeling The Ecological Niche Of The Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee Under Climate Change, Paul Ryan Sesink Clee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Ecological niche theory states that a set of environmental conditions exists that a species relies upon in order to survive and reproduce. Collectively, these variables define a species' niche, which includes a species' dispersal abilities and its range. Ecological niche modeling predicts the distributions of species by using information from environmental variables across geographic space, making it a valuable tool for studying how environment affects population dynamics. With accurate species presence data and geospatial information that describe its known habitat, ENMs can effectively map a species' realized niche across geographical space, and for closely related taxa, be used to understand …
The Multiplied Body : Romanticism's Imaginary Subject, Dana M. Balejko
The Multiplied Body : Romanticism's Imaginary Subject, Dana M. Balejko
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
“The Multiplied Body: Romanticism's Imaginary Subject” develops a new understanding of the Romantic subject as one that fundamentally disrupts the formation of the poetic “I” in its demonstration that through the “awful power” of the imagination the Romantic body is always, already multiplied. The texts analyzed (both Romantic and contemporary) recognize the “constitutive” social and historical fallacies surrounding definitions of the “natural” human. This project's development of an imagined multiple body denotes a refutation of humanistic theories about embodied existence. Ultimately, through an analysis of poetry by Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley (among others), “The Multiplied Body” reveals alternative ontological strategies …
Raman Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids : Species Differentiation And The Effect Of Substrate Interference And Laser Power, Gregory Keith Mclaughlin
Raman Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids : Species Differentiation And The Effect Of Substrate Interference And Laser Power, Gregory Keith Mclaughlin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Several recent discoveries demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy has a unique capability to characterize body fluid traces in a forensic capacity. This approach has thus garnered interest in the forensic community since 2008, when a proof of concept experiment established that blood, semen, vaginal fluid, sweat and saliva are easily differentiable through their Raman spectra. Several possible methods of identification have been described in the literature, one approach uses chemometrical models, and another applies recently formulated multidimensional Raman signatures. The analytical sampling method and the identification procedure provide several desirable traits for the field of forensic science. In particular, Raman spectroscopy …

Exploring The Impact Of Meditation On Attentional Allocation To Emotion, Sychopathology, And Acute Stress, In A Community Sample With Mixed Anxiety And Depression, Nicholas Thomas Van Dam
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Attempts to define mindfulness in the clinical and psychological sciences have been marred by contradictions, inconsistencies, and controversies. In this wait-list (WL) controlled mindfulness meditation training (MMT) study, the efficacy and potential mechanisms of MMT was tested in a community sample with undiagnosed, but significant, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. In a pre/post design, which also included 3 month follow-up, participants completed self-report measures, participated in a psychosocial stress task (before and after which they completed self-report mood questionnaires and had physiological and salivary neuroendocrine markers collected), and completed an emotional attentional blink paradigm. Compared to WL (n = …
What To Eat Now? Shifts In Polar Bear Diet During The Ice-Free Season In Western Hudson Bay, Linda J. Gormezano, Robert F. Rockwell
What To Eat Now? Shifts In Polar Bear Diet During The Ice-Free Season In Western Hudson Bay, Linda J. Gormezano, Robert F. Rockwell
Publications and Research
Under current climate trends, spring ice breakup in Hudson Bay is advancing rapidly, leaving polar bears (Ursus maritimus) less time to hunt seals during the spring when they accumulate the majority of their annual fat reserves. For this reason, foods that polar bears consume during the ice-free season may become increasingly important in alleviating nutritional stress from lost seal hunting opportunities. Defining how the terrestrial diet might have changed since the onset of rapid climate change is an important step in understanding how polar bears may be reacting to climate change. We characterized the current terrestrial diet of polar bears …
Impact Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Heart Disease, Erin Ortiz
Impact Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Heart Disease, Erin Ortiz
Honors Capstones
Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in America. Research has shown that people who consume at least 2-3 portions of Omega-3 fatty acids a week can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 29%. Many studies have been performed all over the world to support this evidence. Certain foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids have also been linked a reduction in heart disease, such as fish and green vegetables. For this thesis, I will be looking at previous studies on the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids and conducting my own survey on local resident’s knowledge of Omega-3 …

Phenotyping, Genotyping, And Analysis Of Arabidopsis : Knockout Mutations Dfrp1, Dfrp2 And Slh Genes, Jared Trout
Honors Capstones
In all organisms studied to date there exists a highly conserved family of GTP- binding proteins known as Developmentally Regulated GTP-Binding (DRG) proteins. DRG genes are believed to function as part of a pathway that consists of at least three genes: DRG, DFRP and SLH Gene. The DRG protein is a GTPase with all five motifs which characterize GTP-binding proteins, G1-G5 (Li & Trueb, 2000). The DFRP protein forms a physical protein-protein interaction with DRG through its DFRP domain and prevents ubiquitination and degradation of the DRG protein (Ishikawa et al, 2005 & Isikawa et al, 2009). The SLH gene, …

The field-effect enzymatic detection (FEED) technique was used to control the kinetics of the enzymatic conversion of glucose to gluconolactone. The glucose–gluconolactone conversion occurring at an enzyme-immobilized electrode, a well-studied process, was confirmed using mass spectrometry. Electrochemical studies showed that the glucose oxidation current depends on the gating voltage VG and the ion concentration of the sample solution. Additionally, the depletion of glucose in the sample also showed a dependence on VG. FEED was used to detect H2O2 on the zepto-molar level in order to show the ultrasensitive detection capability of the technique. These results, while providing evidence for the …
