The Effect Of Magnesium On Angiogenesis Evaluated Utilizing The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay, Lauren Ashlee Douglas-Byrd Jan 2013

The Effect Of Magnesium On Angiogenesis Evaluated Utilizing The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay, Lauren Ashlee Douglas-Byrd

Theses

Magnesium and magnesium alloys are emerging as possible novel biodegradable materials for medical implants such as cardiovascular stents. Understanding the angiogenic properties of magnesium would increase the level of knowledge regarding the healing process once the material is implanted. The chick chorioallantoic membrane assay is an effective, inexpensive method of assessing magnesium's angiogenic properties. The assay is more informative than an in vitro model, in terms of magnesium degradation environment, and provides similar results of an in vivo model. This model can be used as a preliminary method of assessing results before investing labor and finances into larger in vivo …

Prevalence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Among Child Service Providers, Nina Esaki, Heather Larkin Holloway Jan 2013

Prevalence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Among Child Service Providers, Nina Esaki, Heather Larkin Holloway

Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship

Despite increasing evidence in the public health field about the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the general population, little is known about the prevalence of ACEs among social service providers. Trauma backgrounds may influence both worker susceptibility to vicarious traumatization as well as clinical decision making. Similarly, individuals with trauma backgrounds are vulnerable to re-enactment of their history. With pressure on social service agencies to demonstrate successful client outcomes, it is critical that agencies explore factors that influence high-quality care. This exploratory study is the first investigation of ACE prevalence among workers in an agency that provides residential …

Loving The Questions: Finding Food For The Future Of Theological Education In The Lexington Seminar, Mary E. Hess Jan 2013

Loving The Questions: Finding Food For The Future Of Theological Education In The Lexington Seminar, Mary E. Hess

Faculty Publications

Although it ran for more than ten years and involved more than 200 faculty from forty-four ATS member schools, the findings of the Lexington Seminar have not been engaged as robustly as they could be in facing current challenges. This essay collates the experiences of the Lexington Seminar with recent educational literature to suggest a range of options in faculty development for meeting the adaptive challenges facing schools, particularly in terms of shifting dynamics of authority, authenticity, and agency.

A Likelihood-Based Approach For Computing The Operating Characteristics Of The Standard Phase I Clinical Trial Design, Cody Chiuzan, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Sharon D. Yeatts Jan 2013

A Likelihood-Based Approach For Computing The Operating Characteristics Of The Standard Phase I Clinical Trial Design, Cody Chiuzan, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Sharon D. Yeatts

MUSC Department of Public Health Sciences Working Papers

In phase I clinical trials, the standard ‘3+3’ design has passed the test of time and survived various sample size adjustments, or other dose-escalation dynamics. The objective of this study is to provide a probabilistic support for analyzing the heuristic performance of the ‘3+3’ design. Our likelihood method is based on the evidential paradigm that uses the likelihood ratio to measure the strength of statistical evidence for one simple hypothesis over the other. We compute the operating characteristics and compare the behavior of the standard algorithm under different hypotheses, levels of evidence, and true (or best guessed) toxicity rates. Given …

Polymerase Manager Protein Umud Directly Regulates Escherichia Coli Dna Polymerase Iii Α Binding To Ssdna, Kathy R. Chaurasiya, Clarissa Ruslie, Michelle C. Silva, Lukas Voortman, Philip Nevin, Samer Lone, Penny J. Buening, Mark C. Williams

Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Replication by Escherichia coli DNA polymerase III is disrupted on encountering DNA damage. Consequently, specialized Y-family DNA polymerases are used to bypass DNA damage. The protein UmuD is extensively involved in modulating cellular responses to DNA damage and may play a role in DNA polymerase exchange for damage tolerance. In the absence of DNA, UmuD interacts with the α subunit of DNA polymerase III at two distinct binding sites, one of which is adjacent to the single-stranded DNA-binding site of α. Here, we use single molecule DNA stretching experiments to demonstrate that UmuD specifically inhibits binding of α to ssDNA. …

Halq'eméylem Language Revitalization: Tracing Ideologies In Hybridity, Sonya Rao Jan 2013

Halq'eméylem Language Revitalization: Tracing Ideologies In Hybridity, Sonya Rao

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

Recently, indigenous language revitalization has gained attention from Western media and charitable organizations, a process that has depoliticized the history of indigenous languages. One result of this is the naturalization of the ideological projects that put Native languages at risk, as well as the practices that hinder their revival. I focus on how the scientific and intellectual project of linguistics can dispossess elements of Native languages from its speakers, using it as capital for its own objectives. I show that the history of speech communities shapes the language ideologies that inform choices in the revitalization process, the restraints under which …

Renewable Resource Extraction: Experimental Analysis Of Resource Management Policies Under Assumptions Of Resource Migration, Kevin B. Lugo Jan 2013

Renewable Resource Extraction: Experimental Analysis Of Resource Management Policies Under Assumptions Of Resource Migration, Kevin B. Lugo

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper presents research using a spatially explicit and dynamic common pool resource experiment to compare renewable resource extraction behavior between four treatments combining (1) open access and sole ownership institutions with (2) mobility and non-mobility of the renewable resource. The primary purpose of this research is to test the theory that introducing resource mobility into a sole ownership regime will remove the incentive for subjects to maximize the resource, instead causing them to revert to the myopic strategy predicted for the open access regime. I also test the hypothesis that open access firms are indifferent to resource dispersal. The …

Composition And Combination‐Based Object Trust Evaluation For Knowledge Management In Virtual Organizations, Yanjun Zuo, Brajendra Panda

Accountancy Faculty Publications

Purpose

– This paper aims to develop a framework for object trust evaluation and related object trust principles to facilitate knowledge management in a virtual organization. It proposes systematic methods to quantify the trust of an object and defines the concept of object trust management. The study aims to expand the domain of subject trust to object trust evaluation in terms of whether an object is correct and accurate in expressing a topic or issue and whether the object is secure and safe to execute (in the case of an executable program). By providing theoretical and empirical insights about object …

Trash Talk: Solid Waste Disposal In New York City, Alexander Williams Jan 2013

Trash Talk: Solid Waste Disposal In New York City, Alexander Williams

Student Theses 2001-2013

In 2010, Americans produced 250 million tons of solid waste. Where does this massive amount of waste go after we throw it out? The majority of the waste is disposed of in landfills where it does not break down, produces poisonous leachate which can contaminate soil and groundwater supplies, and contributes twenty-five percent of America’s methane emissions. The challenges and hazards of solid waste disposal are no more evident than in New York City. New York City residents produce over 50,000 tons of solid waste and recyclables every day. With the closing of the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island …
