Interactive Controls Of Water Table Position And Plant Functional Types On Peat Porewater Character In Northern Bog Ecosystems: Implications For Carbon Cycling Dynamics, Aleta L. Daniels Jan 2013

Interactive Controls Of Water Table Position And Plant Functional Types On Peat Porewater Character In Northern Bog Ecosystems: Implications For Carbon Cycling Dynamics, Aleta L. Daniels

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Northern wetlands, and particularly peatlands, have been shown to store around 30% of the world's soil carbon and thus play a significant role in the carbon cycle of our planet. Changes in climate are altering peatland hydrology and vegetation communities. These changes are possibly resulting in declines in the ability of peatlands to sequester carbon because losses through carbon oxidation and mineralization are likely to increase relative to C inputs from net primary production in a warmer, drier climate. However, the consequences of interactive effects of altered hydrology and vegetation on carbon storage are not well understood. This research evaluated …

Analysis Of Gender Relations In The Industrial Community Of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, Alejandra Alvarez

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This thesis is a study of the gender relations of the residents of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, between 1940 and 1991. The primary goal of the project was to explore how gender roles and relations in the Aguirre community were impacted by the social class system introduced by the Aguirre Sugar Company. This project was based on the interpretation of the past and present situation of the Aguirre community using oral history, by conducting a series of interviews among its residents. The interviews resulted in three main themes. First, the concepts of `normal and natural' were used to distinguish gender roles. …

Evaluating Karner Blue Butterfly (Lycaeides Melissa Samuelis Nabokov) Habitat Selection In The State Of Wisconsin, Usa, Anna Nahuel Hess

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The federally endangered Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov) persists in rare oak/pine grassland communities spanning across the Great Lakes region, relying on host plant wild blue lupine (Lupinus perennis). Conservation efforts since 1992 have led to the development of several programs that restore and monitor habitat. This study aims to evaluate Karner blue habitat selection in the state of Wisconsin and develop high-resolution tools for use in conservation efforts. Spatial predictive models developed during this study accurately predicted potential habitat across state properties based on soils and canopy cover, and identified ~51-100% of Karner blue occurrences based on …

Dissection Of Stress Response Networks Regulating Multiple Stresses In Rice, Rafi Shaik Jan 2013

Dissection Of Stress Response Networks Regulating Multiple Stresses In Rice, Rafi Shaik

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Important food crops like rice are constantly exposed to various stresses that can have devastating effect on their survival and productivity. Being sessile, these highly evolved organisms have developed elaborate molecular machineries to sense a mixture of stress signals and elicit a precise response to minimize the damage. However, recent discoveries revealed that the interplay of these stress regulatory and signaling molecules is highly complex and remains largely unknown. In this work, we conducted large scale analysis of differential gene expression using advanced computational methods to dissect regulation of stress response which is at the heart of all molecular changes …

Development Of A 2-Dimensional Finite Volume Model To Assess Hydrodynamic And Microbial Controls On Dnapl Dissolution And Detoxification, Eric S. Wesseldyke Jan 2013

Development Of A 2-Dimensional Finite Volume Model To Assess Hydrodynamic And Microbial Controls On Dnapl Dissolution And Detoxification, Eric S. Wesseldyke

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) form dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), which are persistent groundwater contaminants. DNAPL dissolution can be "bioenhanced" via dissolved contaminant biodegradation at the DNAPL-water interface. This research hypothesized that: (1) competitive interactions between different dehalorespiring strains can significantly impact the bioenhancement effect, and extent of PCE dechlorination; and (2) hydrodynamics will affect the outcome of competition and the potential for bioenhancement and detoxification. A two-dimensional coupled flowtransport model was developed, with a DNAPL pool source and multiple microbial species. In the scenario presented, Dehalococcoides mccartyi 195 competes with Desulfuromonas michiganensis for the electron acceptors PCE and …

Narratives Of Longevity: Why Adventist Principals Stay Beyond 10 Years In One School., Janet Ledesma Jan 2013

Narratives Of Longevity: Why Adventist Principals Stay Beyond 10 Years In One School., Janet Ledesma

Faculty Publications

Across public and private school systems, there is a shortage of principals in the United States. Many studies have identified reasons why school principals leave their jobs. However, few studies have been conducted to understand why principals stay. The purpose of this article is to describe the experiences of 14 principals who have remained in leadership in the Seventh- day Adventist system of education in North America longer than 10 years in a single school building. Though the lens of resiliency theory and spiritual leadership theory, meaning was captured i the lived experiences of these Christian educational leaders.

The Real Limits To Marine Life: A Further Critique Of The Respiration Index, Brad A. Seibel, J. J. Childress Jan 2013

The Real Limits To Marine Life: A Further Critique Of The Respiration Index, Brad A. Seibel, J. J. Childress

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The recently proposed "Respiration Index" (RI = log PO2/PCO2) suggests that aerobic metabolism is limited by the ratio of reactants (oxygen) to products (carbon dioxide) according to the thermodynamics of cellular respiration. Here, we demonstrate further that, because of the large standard free energy change for organic carbon oxidation (ΔG° = −686 kcal mol−1), carbon dioxide can never reach concentrations that would limit the thermodynamics of this reaction. A PCO2 to PO2 ratio of 10503 would be required to reach equilibrium (equilibrium constant, K …

Girly Girls, Tomboys, Athletes And Nerds: A Phenomenological Study Of Social Context In The Specialised School Environment, Katrina Eddles-Hirsch Jan 2013

Girly Girls, Tomboys, Athletes And Nerds: A Phenomenological Study Of Social Context In The Specialised School Environment, Katrina Eddles-Hirsch

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This study uses a phenomenological framework to discover from elementary aged gifted girls and boys themselves whether they experienced the social context of their specialized school differently. The gender identities of the three schools in this study were found to play an important role in the creation of a positive or negative social context, which ultimately impacted the talent development process. A review of the research literature found that while there has been research carried out in this area at the secondary school level, not much is known about the impact of social context in the specialised school environment at …

Development Of A Field Test Method For Total Suspended Solids Analysis, Tian Zhang, John S. Stansbury, Jessica Branigan Jan 2013

Development Of A Field Test Method For Total Suspended Solids Analysis, Tian Zhang, John S. Stansbury, Jessica Branigan

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Total suspended solids (TSS) are all particles in water that will not pass through a glass fiber filter with a pore size less than 2 μm, including sediments, algae, nutrients, and metals. TSS is an important water quality parameter because of its adverse effects on aquatic species and wildlife. TSS is regulated through the EPA via the NPDES in many states. Since there are no accepted field tests for TSS, projects with TSS regulations must send samples to a laboratory for analysis, which can delay projects for days or weeks. The goal of this research was to develop a rapid, …

College Students' Alcohol Consumption Habits, Perceptions, Readiness To Change And Exposure To A Brief Information Based Intervention, Matthew Boudreau

Psychology Honors Papers

The current study sought to compare the effectiveness of two brief information based interventions. The first exposed to participants information regarding accurate social norms college student alcohol consumption and a second which focused on information regarding the effects of alcohol on the brain and body. The effectiveness of the interventions was investigated by comparing initial scores on the Readiness to Change scale (RTC; Rollnick et al. 1992) to scores on the same scale after a two week follow up. It was hypothesized that the groups who received the intervention would both show significant increases in scores on the contemplative and …

Effects Of Amphetamine On Radial Arm Maze Performance In The Shr Model Of Adhd Versus Age/Strain Matched Controls, Kristin Lampley

Psychology Honors Papers

Stimulants have been shown to have a variety of effects on different measures of learning and memory. In general low doses of stimulants like nicotine and caffeine enhance memory acquisition and recall, while high doses can significantly impair performance. Amphetamine, in the form of Adderall, is widely prescribed to improve attention and reduce hyperactivity, which promotes learning in children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADHD). The radial arm maze (RAM) is a test of spatial learning that allows for the tracking of short and long-term memory errors. In the current study, we employed the RAM to examine the effects of …

Implicit And Explicit Stigma Surrounding Bulimia And Depression In A College Population, Emily Morse Jan 2013

Implicit And Explicit Stigma Surrounding Bulimia And Depression In A College Population, Emily Morse

Psychology Honors Papers

Research suggests that stigma lies on both a conscious, explicit level and an automatic, implicit level. This research investigated the explicit and implicit stigma surrounding two mental illnesses: depression and bulimia. 62 participants included college students in introductory Psychology courses, male (n=16) and female (n = 45). Participants took two Implicit Association Tests (IATs), one investigating general mental illness stigma versus physical illness (on the dimension of blameworthiness) and the other directly investigating bulimia stigma versus depression stigma (also on the dimension of blameworthiness). Then, participants were given either a vignette about a female with bulimia or depression and asked …

Factors Influencing The Current And Historical Invasion Trends In The Connecticut College Arboretum, Lillian Fayerweather Jan 2013

Factors Influencing The Current And Historical Invasion Trends In The Connecticut College Arboretum, Lillian Fayerweather

Botany Honors Papers

Invasive species present a growing risk to native ecosystems. It would be impossible to eliminate them, but by learning where they are more likely to occur it may be possible to concentrate resources on removal and management in the most at risk areas. A number of site characteristics may influence invasive species presence and invasion trends. In order to determine what factors affect species presence and historical invasion trends, I utilized data from decennial surveys conducted in the Bolleswood Natural Area of the Connecticut College Arboretum in New London, Connecticut. In 1952, 4 transects were established across the area, composed …

A State's Obligation To Fund Hormonal Therapy And Sex-Reassignment Surgery For Prisoners Diagnosed With Gender Identity Disorder, Rena M. Lindevaldsen Jan 2013

A State's Obligation To Fund Hormonal Therapy And Sex-Reassignment Surgery For Prisoners Diagnosed With Gender Identity Disorder, Rena M. Lindevaldsen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article explores whether a state law imposing a flat ban on the use of funds to provide cross-gender hormones or sex-reassignment surgery for prisoners diagnosed with GID satisfies the Eighth Amendment standard of deliberately indifferent to serious medical needs. In other words, the issue is whether it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment for a state to refuse to provide hormones or sex-reassignment surgery to GID prisoners. The district court in Kosilek v. Spencer1 held that it does: the state violated the Eighth Amendment in providing feminizing hormones to Kosilek but refusing to provide him sex-reassignment surgery. Part I …
