Giving Back To The Community: Addressing The Environmental Literacy Gap Through Socially And Environmentally Responsible Business Practices, David Garcia
Student Theses 2001-2013
The following paper was inspired by my passion for environmental education and environmental justice. The problem being addressed herein is the environmental literacy gap in the United States caused by the environmental education deficit. After an extensive review of literature and research regarding the issue of environmental education in America, I propose that the environmental and social responsibility movement in business can help augment the environmental education deficit in our country. In order to fully grasp the issues at hand and to understand the full scope of environmental education, I first discuss three disciplines essential to the process of integrating …

Coordinated Activation Of The Rac-Gap Β2-Chimaerin By An Atypical Proline-Rich Domain And Diacylglcercol, Bruce J. Mayer
Coordinated Activation Of The Rac-Gap Β2-Chimaerin By An Atypical Proline-Rich Domain And Diacylglcercol, Bruce J. Mayer
UCHC Articles - Research
Chimaerins, a family of GTPase activating proteins (GAPs) for the small G-protein Rac, have been implicated in development, neuritogenesis, and cancer. These Rac-GAPs are regulated by the lipid second messenger diacylglycerol (DAG) generated by tyrosine-kinases such as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Here we identify an atypical Pro-rich motif in chimaerins that binds to the adaptor protein Nck1. Unlike most Nck1 partners, chimaerins bind to the third SH3 domain of Nck1. This association is mediated by electrostatic interactions of basic residues within the Pro-rich motif with acidic clusters in the SH3 domain. EGF promotes the binding of β2-chimaerin to …
Neurogenesis Continues In The Third Trimester Of Pregnancy And Is Suppressed By Premature Birth, Nada Zecevic
Neurogenesis Continues In The Third Trimester Of Pregnancy And Is Suppressed By Premature Birth, Nada Zecevic
UCHC Articles - Research
Premature infants exhibit neurodevelopmental delay and reduced growth of the cerebral cortex. However, the underlying mechanisms have remained elusive. Therefore, we hypothesized that neurogenesis in the ventricular and subventricular zones of the cerebral cortex would continue in the third trimester of pregnancy, and that preterm birth would suppress neurogenesis. To test our hypotheses, we evaluated autopsy materials from human fetuses and preterm infants of 16–35 gestational weeks (gw). We noted that both cycling and non-cycling Sox2+ radial glial cells as well as Tbr2+ intermediate progenitors were abundant in human preterm infants until 28 gw. However, their densities consistently …

Copper Signaling In The Mammalian Nervous System: Synaptic Effects, Eric D. Gaier, Betty A. Eipper, Richard E. Mains
UCHC Articles - Research
Copper (Cu) is an essential metal present at high levels in the CNS. Its role as a co-factor in mitochondrial ATP production and in other essential cuproenzymes is well defined. Menkes and Wilson’s diseases are severe neurodegenerative conditions that demonstrate the importance of Cu transport into the secretory pathway. Brain levels of Cu, which is almost entirely protein bound, exceed extracellular levels by more than a hundred-fold. Cu stored in the secretory pathway is released in a Ca2+-dependent manner and can transiently reach concentrations over 100 µM at synapses. The ability of low µM levels of Cu to …

The Impact Of Binaural Beat Technology On Vigilance Task Performance, Mental Workload, And Psychological Stress, Elizabeth A. Shoda, Gary N. Burns
The Impact Of Binaural Beat Technology On Vigilance Task Performance, Mental Workload, And Psychological Stress, Elizabeth A. Shoda, Gary N. Burns
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
Vigilance research dates back to WWII when psychologists attempted to explain why sonar radar operators were missing signals allowing German U-boats to pass undetected. This error in vigilance was termed the vigilance decrement. Since WWII the vigilance decrement has been responsible for a number of military, commercial, and industrial accidents and deaths. One possible area of interest which may help to solve this problem is called binaural beat technology. Binaural beats operate by entraining the brain in a frequency following response. Depending on the frequency of the binaural beat, different psychological and physiological results can occur. The current study examined …

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex In A Vibration Environment, Daniel Uribe, Michael E. Miller, Suzanne Smith
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) and their integration into military systems have greatly improved. However, previous research has demonstrated degraded visual performance when an HMD user is subject to whole-body, low-frequency vibration. This effect has been attributed to the effect of the Vesitbular-Ocular Reflex as it stabilizes the eye with respect to the external environment, causing eye movement with respect to the HMD. This research sought to understand the VOR as a function of whole-body, low-frequency, z-axis vibration. A human subject experiment was executed to measure the effect of whole-body, low-frequency vibration on eye movements recorded with Electro-oculagraphy (EOG) while performing …

The Use Of Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (Fnirs) To Assess Cognitive Workload Of Air Traffic Controllers, Hyun Woo, Ben Willems, Joshua Harrison, Kurtulus Izzetoglu, Sehchang Hah, Hasan Ayaz
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
The performance of a Certified Professional Controller (CPC) can have a critical impact on safety. A specific concern is that a high cognitive load has been associated with performance decrement. Thus, it is important to continuously monitor and accurately assess CPC cognitive load. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Conflict Resolution Advisory (CRA), automation which provides CPCs with resolutions to avoid conflicts. In this study, we used functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to index cognitive workload of 12 CPCs from En Route centers. Results indicate that fNIRS measures were sensitive to air traffic level, but …

Ethanol Regulation Of Serum Glucocorticoid Kinase 1 Expression In Dba2/J Mouse Prefrontal Cortex, Blair N. Costin, Seth M. Dever, Michael F. Miles
Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications
Background
We previously identified a group of glucocorticoid-responsive genes, including Serum Glucocorticoid kinase 1 (Sgk1), regulated by acute ethanol in prefrontal cortex of DBA2/J mice. Acute ethanol activates the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) causing release of glucocorticoids. Chronic ethanol dysregulates the HPA response in both humans and rodents, possibly contributing to important interactions between stress and alcoholism. Because Sgk1regulates ion channels and learning and memory, we hypothesized that Sgk1 contributes to HPA-dependent acute and adaptive neuronal responses to ethanol. These studies characterized acute and chronic ethanol regulation of Sgk1 mRNA and protein and their relationship with ethanol actions …

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the joint is a prevalent disease accompanied by chronic, debilitating pain. Recent clinical evidence has demonstrated that central sensitization contributes to OA pain. An improved understanding of how OA joint pathology impacts upon the central processing of pain is crucial for the identification of novel analgesic targets/new therapeutic strategies.
Inhibitory cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptors attenuate peripheral immune cell function and modulate central neuro-immune responses in models of neurodegeneration. Systemic administration of the CB2 receptor agonist JWH133 attenuated OA-induced pain behaviour, and the changes in circulating pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines exhibited in this model. Electrophysiological studies revealed that …

Publications
We evaluated the potential utility of pectoral fin rays as non-lethal aging structures for smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu). We compared age estimates among three reading pairs and against sectioned sagittal otolith age estimates for precision. Reading pair bias was not detected, although the highest rates of age estimate agreement occurred between reading pairs with high and moderate aging experience. Precision of otolith and fin ray age estimates were equivalent based on between-structure comparisons of average percent error and coefficient of variation. However, fin rays underestimated fish age compared to otoliths for older fish, especially when aged by less-experienced …
