Design Of A 2.4 Ghz Horizontally Polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna Using Rectangular And Circular Directors And Reflectors, Yosef Yilak Woldeamanuel Feb 2013

Design Of A 2.4 Ghz Horizontally Polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna Using Rectangular And Circular Directors And Reflectors, Yosef Yilak Woldeamanuel

Electrical Engineering Theses

In the urban or indoor wireless environment, after a complicated multiple reflection or scattering effect, the polarization of the propagating radio waves may change significantly. Although many current wireless systems are vertically polarized it has been predicted that using horizontally polarized antenna at both the transmitter and receiver has many advantages. In this thesis, new designs are proposed to develop a horizontally polarized microstrip patch antennas for 2.4 GHz applications using directors and reflectors to guide the radiated power. The radiation characteristics of these designs with respect to various geometrical parameters such as the dimensions of the reflector and directors, …

The Other Mother: A Narrative Analysis Of The Postpartum Experiences Of Nonbirth Lesbian Mothers, Michele M. Mckelvey Feb 2013

The Other Mother: A Narrative Analysis Of The Postpartum Experiences Of Nonbirth Lesbian Mothers, Michele M. Mckelvey

Doctoral Dissertations

The United States Census (2013) reported that 49 percent of lesbian couples are raising children. Homosexuality has become more accepted in mainstream society. Lesbians and gay men currently have more social and legal rights and protections than at any other time in history. These rights are largely dependent upon the geographical location in which one resides. Although the incidence of lesbian motherhood has increased, the partners of biological mothers are not automatically recognized as parents. Same-sex couples can jointly petition to adopt their partner’s biological children in only 16 American states (including the District of Columbia). Throughout most of the …

Immobile Myosin-Ii Plays A Scaffolding Role During Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, C. Wloka, Elizabeth Ann Vallen, Lydia Thé , '08, X. Fang, Y. Oh, E. Bi

Biology Faculty Works

Core components of cytokinesis are conserved from yeast to human, but how these components are assembled into a robust machine that drives cytokinesis remains poorly understood. In this paper, we show by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching analysis that Myo1, the sole myosin-II in budding yeast, was mobile at the division site before anaphase and became immobilized shortly before cytokinesis. This immobility was independent of actin filaments or the motor domain of Myo1 but required a small region in the Myo1 tail that is thought to be involved in higher-order assembly. As expected, proteins involved in actin ring assembly (tropomyosin and …

Standardized Treatment Planning Methodology For Passively Scattered Proton Craniospinal Irradiation, Annelise Giebeler, Wayne D. Newhauser, Richard A. Amos, Anita Mahajan, Kenneth Homann, Rebecca M. Howell Feb 2013

Standardized Treatment Planning Methodology For Passively Scattered Proton Craniospinal Irradiation, Annelise Giebeler, Wayne D. Newhauser, Richard A. Amos, Anita Mahajan, Kenneth Homann, Rebecca M. Howell

Faculty Publications

Background: As the number of proton therapy centers increases, so does the need for studies which compare proton treatments between institutions and with photon therapy. However, results of such studies are highly dependent on target volume definition and treatment planning techniques. Thus, standardized methods of treatment planning are needed, particularly for proton treatment planning, in which special consideration is paid to the depth and sharp distal fall-off of the proton distribution. This study presents and evaluates a standardized method of proton treatment planning for craniospinal irradiation (CSI).Methods: We applied our institution's planning methodology for proton CSI, at the time of …

International Law Of Outer Space And Its Effect On Commercial Space Activity, James J. Trimble Feb 2013

International Law Of Outer Space And Its Effect On Commercial Space Activity, James J. Trimble

Pepperdine Law Review

The United Nations, through a series of five treaties, has created a body of international space law which controls the activities in space of states, international organizations, and private interests. Corporations planning an investment in commercial space ventures must consider the restrictions and obligations which space law will impose on their activities. This article discusses the substantive principles of the law of outer space and focuses on those provisions which will affect commercial space activities.

A Computational Approach To Optimize Microring Resonators For Biosensing Applications, Justin C. Wirth, B. R. Wenner, M. S. Allen, J. W. Allen, M. Qi

Birck and NCN Publications

Microcavity structures have recently found utility in chemical/biological sensing applications. The appeal of these structures over other refractive index-based sensing schemes, such as those based on surface plasmon resonance, lies in their potential for producing a highly sensitive response to binding events. High-Q devices, characterized by sharp line widths, are extremely attractive for sensing applications because the bound analyte provides an increased optical pathlength, thus shifting the resonant frequency of the device. In this work, we design and simulate resonant microrings using full-wave finite element models. In addition to structure design, integration of the biological recognition element on the resonator …

Identifying Compounds To Help Control Bed Bugs, Mark Feldlaufer Feb 2013

Identifying Compounds To Help Control Bed Bugs, Mark Feldlaufer

Agricultural Research Magazine

When planning an attack on bothersome pests, it’s a good idea to know your enemies, especially if they happen to be bed bugs. These small, flat, blood-feeding insects—an uncommon problem since the 1950s—have once again become a menace in homes, apartments, hotels, shelters, and even places of work in the last 10 years.

Despite extensive efforts to determine whether bed bugs transmit disease-causing pathogens, no evidence indicates that they are a problem other than their biting, blood feeding, and dirty habits. However, some people have severe reactions to bed bug bites, and getting rid of the insects can be costly. …

Lifting All Boats With Organic And Conventional Research, Matt Smith Feb 2013

Lifting All Boats With Organic And Conventional Research, Matt Smith

Agricultural Research Magazine

At first glance, the divide between organic and conventional farming appears to be of Grand Canyon proportions. But when it comes to research, the distance between organic and conventional farming practices is not nearly so great.

The Agricultural Research Service has a national program that specifically carries out studies aimed at helping organic farmers to compete in the marketplace by finding ways to cost-effectively produce abundant amounts of high-quality, safe products to meet consumer demands.

Consumer demand for organically produced goods has shown double-digit growth for well over a decade, providing market incentives for U.S. farmers across a broad range …

Studying Manure In Cows, In Feedlots, And In Fields, Lisa M. Durso, John Gilley, Ann Perry Feb 2013

Studying Manure In Cows, In Feedlots, And In Fields, Lisa M. Durso, John Gilley, Ann Perry

Agricultural Research Magazine

Agricultural Research Service scientists at the Agroecosystems Management Research Unit in Lincoln, Nebraska, have been conducting some very thorough investigations on the microbes that dwell in cattle manure—what they are, where they thrive, where they struggle, and where they may end up. “When we look at potential pathogens that can cause foodborne illness, we need to look at the whole bacterial ecosystem,” says ARS microbiologist Lisa Durso. “For instance, some people used to think all cattle have the same bacteria in their gastrointestinal [GI] tracts. But we’ve found some big differences; so if we say, ‘Oh, it’s just manure,’ we …

Emerging Enemy Of Veggies Unmasked, Carolee T. Bull, Marcia Wood Feb 2013

Emerging Enemy Of Veggies Unmasked, Carolee T. Bull, Marcia Wood

Agricultural Research Magazine

Chic, trendy veggies like arugula and baby broccoli, and familiar stand-bys like Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, are vulnerable to attack by a once-puzzling pathogen. Agricultural Research Service plant pathologist Carolee T. Bull and colleagues have, in laboratory, greenhouse, and field research, detected, identified, renamed, and classified the plant-killing microbe that’s now officially known as Pseudomonas cannabina pv. alisalensis. “Pv.” stands for “pathovar” and indicates that the microbe is a specific pathogenic form, or strain, of a species.

Their work has sorted out some of the taxonomic confusion surrounding classification of the large, complex group of harmful bacteria in …

Release Of Avian Neurotensin In Response To Intraluminal Contents In The Duodenum Of Chickens, Teresa F. Degolier, Robert E. Carraway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Peripheral and hepatic-portal plasma levels of neurotensin (NT) in fed and fasted chickens were determined using RIA. Portal levels of NT1-13 (fed = 61.3 ± 3.9 fmol/mL; fasted = 44.5 ± 3.9 fmol/mL) were significantly higher than peripheral levels (fed = 8.2 ± 3.3 fmol/mL; fasted = 7.8 ± 3.0 fmol/mL) collected from the wing vein, indicating that some NT is metabolized in the liver. Portal plasma levels of NT collected from fed birds were also significantly higher than portal plasma levels of NT collected from fasted birds. Neurotensin, as identified by HPLC, exhibited a 2-fold increase in plasma extracts …

Visual Homing With A Pan-Tilt Based Stereo Camera, Paramesh Nirmal, Damian M. Lyons

Faculty Publications

Visual homing is a navigation method based on comparing a stored image of the goal location and the current image (current view) to determine how to navigate to the goal location. It is theorized that insects, such as ants and bees, employ visual homing methods to return to their nest [1]. Visual homing has been applied to autonomous robot platforms using two main approaches: holistic and feature-based. Both methods aim at determining distance and direction to the goal location. Navigational algorithms using Scale Invariant Feature Transforms (SIFT) have gained great popularity in the recent years due to the robustness of …
