2013 Walden University Research Symposium, Walden University

2010-2016 Archived Programs

Welcome to the 2013 Walden University Research Symposium. Again this year we are excited to be able to showcase research projects from our academic community, including work by our recent graduates, in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. The topics and approaches are diverse as usual, but this year we see …

Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay Jan 2013

Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

Cybersecurity threats to the nation are growing in intensity, frequency, and severity and are a very real threat to the security of the country. Academia has responded to a wide variety of homeland security (HS) threats to the nation by creating formal curricula in the field, although these programs almost exclusively focus on physical threats (e.g., terrorist attacks, and natural and man-made disasters), law and policy and transportation . Although cybersecurity programs are commonly available in U.S. colleges and universities, they are invariably offered as a technical course of study nested within engineering (or other STEM) programs. We observe that …

Part 4: Where Our City And County Governments Spend Their Money, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

City and county governments in our region focus their spending on education and public safety. However, the specific choices they make sometimes can be surprising. Governmental units now face politically difficult decisions, such as closing under-enrolled schools.

Part 7: Mental Health Care In Hampton Roads: "Streeting," Guns And Budgets, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Virginia no longer institutionalizes many mentally ill individuals, but mental health budgets are insufficient to meet demands. The Commonwealth’s rather lax gun laws limit our ability to keep guns out of the hands of dangerously mentally ill people.

All Punishment Is Local: The Effects Of Jurisdictional Context On Sentence Length, Elsa Y. Chen Jan 2013

All Punishment Is Local: The Effects Of Jurisdictional Context On Sentence Length, Elsa Y. Chen

Political Science

Objectives
This article investigates the extent to which contextual and individual factors influence the length of prison sentences in California.

Methods
The analysis applies a hierarchical linear model to individual and county-level data.

Results
Some characteristics of the racial, organizational, and public safety environments are found to influence the length of prison terms.

Conclusions
The findings support the organizational maintenance perspective and the idea of minority incarceration as a response to a perceived crime threat. Political environment is not found to have a significant effect on sentence lengths, and the findings do not support the racial threat hypothesis. The effects …

Shrinking Political Costs Of War Contemporary Security Policy And The Attenuation Of Democratic Control, Hannah Ackerman Jan 2013

Shrinking Political Costs Of War Contemporary Security Policy And The Attenuation Of Democratic Control, Hannah Ackerman

Theses & ETDs

As developments in contemporary warfare have led to new forms of military power, the historical connections between American society and its military have become attenuated. The possibility that small, limited conflicts can be fought by technical, professional military forces without requiring substantial demands of the public reassures political leaders that the costs of war will be small and dimly felt. As a result, few leaders go out of their way to communicate the merits of increasingly complex foreign policy. This study explores the political implications of recent changes in war-making, but also takes a much longer view by examining developments …

Proving Power: Men's Opinions On Gendered Public Harassment, Mia Newell Jan 2013

Proving Power: Men's Opinions On Gendered Public Harassment, Mia Newell

Theses & ETDs

The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between masculinity and public harassment. By examining men's understandings of harassment, and motivations for these types of interactions, a broader exploration of gender performativity and the role of masculinity in public spaces was made possible. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with men in public spaces. Participants' descriptions of harassment highlighted beliefs that harassment is about achieving, expressing, and maintaining power. These men identified proving masculinity as a motivation for harassing women in public. They also believed that harassment was related to a desire to feel powerful and express heterosexual desire. …

The Use Of Financial Statements To Predict The Stock Market Effects Of Systemic Crises, Mohammad Yahia Almakrami Jan 2013

The Use Of Financial Statements To Predict The Stock Market Effects Of Systemic Crises, Mohammad Yahia Almakrami

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The financial crisis of 2007-2009 had divesting effects around the globe. Many financial institutions and government officials failed to see the build up of problems predicting the crisis and hence failed to take actions to keep the crisis from breaking out. Thus, it is important to see if the emerging problems could have been identified in advance in order to develop types of analysis that could help us avoid future crises. A full investigation of such possibilities will require many different studies taking different approaches. This dissertation contributes to that collective effort by investigating the extent to which balance sheet …

The Convergence Of International Trade And Investment Arbitration, Roger P. Alford Jan 2013

The Convergence Of International Trade And Investment Arbitration, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

The World Trade Organization (“WTO”) and bilateral investment treaties (“BITs”) are among the most significant legal developments in the history of international economic law. Never before in the history of international relations has trade and investment been supported by such powerful legal guarantees and adjudicative processes. In less than two decades the WTO and BITs have permanently altered the legal landscape with reciprocal and mutually advantageous arrangements designed to reduce barriers to trade and investment and eliminate discriminatory treatment in international economic relations. In most respects the worlds of trade and investment are on parallel tracks headed in the same …
